Abstract:Cut-elimination is the bedrock of proof theory. It is the algorithm that eliminates cuts from a sequent calculus proof that leads to cut-free calculi and applications. Cut-elimination applies to many logics irrespective of their semantics. Such is its influence that whenever cut-elimination is not provable in a sequent calculus the invariable response has been a move to a richer proof system to regain it. In this paper we investigate a radically different approach to the latter: adapting age-old cut-elimination to restrict the shape of the cut-formulas when elimination is not possible. We tackle the "first level" above cut-free: analytic cuts. Our methodology is applied to the sequent calculi for bi-intuitionistic logic and S5 where analytic cuts are already known to be required. This marks the first steps in a theory of cut-restriction.

Abstract:Cut-elimination is the bedrock of proof theory with a multitude of applications from computational interpretations to proof analysis. It is also the starting point for important meta-theoretical investigations including decidability, complexity, disjunction property, and interpolation. Unfortunately cut-elimination does not hold for the sequent calculi of most non-classical logics. It is well-known that the key to applications is the subformula property (a typical consequence of cut-elimination) rather than cut-elimination itself. With this in mind we introduce cut-restriction, a procedure to restrict arbitrary cuts to analytic cuts (when elimination is not possible). The algorithm applies to all sequent calculi satisfying language-independent and simple-to-check conditions, and it is obtained by adapting age-old cut-elimination. Our work encompasses existing results in a uniform way, and establishes novel analytic subformula properties.

Abstract:Proof search has been used to specify a wide range of computation systems. In order to build a framework for reasoning about such specifications, we make use of a sequent calculus involving induction and co-induction. These proof principles are based on a proof-theoretic (rather than set-theoretic) notion of definition (Hallnäs, 1991 [18], Eriksson, 1991 [11], Schroeder-Heister, 1993 [38], McDowell and Miller, 2000 [22]). Definitions are akin to logic programs, where the left and right rules for defined atoms allow one to view theories as “closed” or defining fixed points. The use of definitions and free equality makes it possible to reason intensionally about syntax. We add in a consistent way rules for pre- and post-fixed points, thus allowing the user to reason inductively and co-inductively about properties of computational system making full use of higher-order abstract syntax. Consistency is guaranteed via cut-elimination, where we give a direct cut-elimination procedure in the presence of general inductive and co-inductive definitions via the parametric reducibility technique.

Abstract:We consider modal logic extended with the well-known temporal operator `eventually' and provide a cut-elimination procedure for a cyclic sequent calculus that captures this fragment. The work showcases an adaptation of the reductive cut-elimination method to cyclic calculi. Notably, the proposed algorithm applies to a cyclic proof and directly outputs a cyclic cut-free proof without appealing to intermediate machinery for regularising the end proof.

Abstract:In sequent calculi, cut elimination is a property that guarantees that any provable formula can be proven analytically. For example, Gentzen's classical and intuitionistic calculi LK and LJ enjoy cut elimination. The property is less studied in coinductive extensions of sequent calculi. In this paper, we use coinductive Horn clause theories to show that cut is not eliminable in a coinductive extension of LJ, a system we call CLJ. We derive two further practical results from this study. We show that CoLP by Gupta et al. gives rise to cut-free proofs in CLJ with fixpoint terms, and we formulate and implement a novel method of coinductive theory exploration that provides several heuristics for discovery of cut formulae in CLJ.

Infinitary cut-elimination via finite approximations (extended version)

Abstract:We investigate non-wellfounded proof systems based on parsimonious logic, a weaker variant of linear logic where the exponential modality ! is interpreted as a constructor for streams over finite data. Logical consistency is maintained at a global level by adapting a standard progressing criterion. We present an infinitary version of cut-elimination based on finite approximations, and we prove that, in presence of the progressing criterion, it returns well-defined non-wellfounded proofs at its limit. Furthermore, we show that cut-elimination preserves the progressive criterion and various regularity conditions internalizing degrees of proof-theoretical uniformity. Finally, we provide a denotational semantics for our systems based on the relational model.

Abstract:Cut-elimination theorems constitute one of the most important classes of theorems of proof theory. Since Gentzen's proof of the cut-elimination theorem for the system $\mathbf{LK}$, several other proofs have been proposed. Even though the techniques of these proofs can be modified to sequent systems other than $\mathbf{LK}$, they are essentially of a very particular nature; each of them describes an algorithm to transform a given proof to a cut-free proof. However, due to its reliance on heavy syntactic arguments and case distinctions, such an algorithm makes the fundamental structure of the argument rather opaque. We, therefore, consider rules abstractly, within the framework of logical structures familiar from universal logic à la Jean-Yves Béziau, and aim to clarify the essence of the so-called ``elimination theorems''. To do this, we first give a non-algorithmic proof of the cut-elimination theorem for the propositional fragment of $\mathbf{LK}$. From this proof, we abstract the essential features of the argument and define something called ``normal sequent structures'' relative to a particular rule. We then prove two rule-elimination theorems for these and show that one of these has a converse. Abstracting even more, we define ``abstract sequent structures'' and show that for these structures, the corresponding version of the ``rule''-elimination theorem has a converse as well.

Abstract:<p>We investigate cut-elimination and cut-simulation in impredicative(higher-order) logics. We illustrate that adding simple axioms such as Leibnizequations to a calculus for an impredicative logic -- in our case a sequentcalculus for classical type theory -- is like adding cut. The phenomenonequally applies to prominent axioms like Boolean- and functionalextensionality, induction, choice, and description. This calls for thedevelopment of calculi where these principles are built-in instead of beingtreated axiomatically.</p>

A Simple Proof That Super-Consistency Implies Cut Elimination

Abstract:We give a simple and direct proof that super-consistency implies the cut elimination property in deduction modulo. This proof can be seen as a simplification of the proof that super-consistency implies proof normalization. It also takes ideas from the semantic proofs of cut elimination that proceed by proving the completeness of the cut-free calculus. As an application, we compare our work with the cut elimination theorems in higher-order logic that involve V-complexes.

Our aim is to provide (i) a constructive cut-elimination procedure and (ii) alternative modular formulations for these systems. We present our methodology to achieve these two goals on a subclass of path axioms, namely quasi-transitivity axioms.

Nested Sequents for First-Order Modal Logics via Reachability Rules

Abstract:We introduce the first cut-free nested sequent systems for first-order modal logics that admit increasing, decreasing, constant, and empty domains along with so-called general path conditions and seriality. We obtain such systems by means of two devices: 'reachability rules' and 'structural refinement'. Regarding the former device, we introduce reachability rules as special logical rules parameterized with formal grammars (viz. types of semi-Thue systems) that operate by propagating formulae and/or checking if data exists along certain paths within a nested sequent, where paths are encoded as strings generated by a parameterizing grammar. Regarding the latter device, structural refinement is a relatively new methodology used to extract nested sequent systems from labeled systems (which are ultimately obtained from a semantics) by means of eliminating structural/relational rules, introducing reachability rules, and then carrying out a notational translation. We therefore demonstrate how this method can be extended to the setting of first-order modal logics, and expose how reachability rules naturally arise from applying this method.

Abstract:The quasi-normal modal logic GLS is a provability logic formalizing the arithmetical truth. Kushida (2020) gave a sequent calculus for GLS and proved the cut-elimination theorem. This paper introduces semantical characterizations of GLS and gives a semantical proof of the cut-elimination theorem. These characterizations can be generalized to other quasi-normal modal logics.

Abstract:We show how to express intuitionistic Zermelo set theory in deduction modulo (i.e. by replacing its axioms by rewrite rules) in such a way that the corresponding notion of proof enjoys the normalization property. To do so, we first rephrase set theory as a theory of pointed graphs (following a paradigm due to P. Aczel) by interpreting set-theoretic equality as bisimilarity, and show that in this setting, Zermelo's axioms can be decomposed into graph-theoretic primitives that can be turned into rewrite rules. We then show that the theory we obtain in deduction modulo is a conservative extension of (a minor extension of) Zermelo set theory. Finally, we prove the normalization of the intuitionistic fragment of the theory.

Normalisation for Negative Free Logics without and with Definite Descriptions

Abstract:This paper proves normalisation theorems for intuitionist and classical negative free logic, without and with the $\invertediota$ operator for definite descriptions. Rules specific to free logic give rise to new kinds of maximal formulas additional to those familiar from standard intuitionist and classical logic. When $\invertediota$ is added it must be ensured that reduction procedures involving replacements of parameters by terms do not introduce new maximal formulas of higher degree than the ones removed. The problem is solved by a rule that permits restricting these terms in the rules for $\forall$, $\exists$ and $\invertediota$ to parameters or constants. A restricted subformula property for deductions in systems without $\invertediota$ is considered. It is improved upon by an alternative formalisation of free logic building on an idea of Jaśkowski's. In the classical system the rules for $\invertediota$ require treatment known from normalisation for classical logic with $\lor$ or $\exists$. The philosophical significance of the results is also indicated.

Graphical Proof Theory I: Sequent Systems on Undirected Graphs

Abstract:In this paper we explore the design of sequent calculi operating on graphs. For this purpose, we introduce a set of logical connectives allowing us to extend the correspondence between cographs and classical propositional formulas to any graph. We then provide sequent calculi operating on these formulas, we prove cut-elimination and that formula encoding the same graph are logically equivalent. We show that these systems provide conservative extensions of multiplicative linear logic (with and without mix) and classical propositional logic. We conclude by showing that one of these systems is equivalent to the graphical logic GS defined via a system of context-free graph rewiring rules, therefore providing an alternative proof of analyticity for this logic over graphs.

Abstract:Let $R$ be an o-minimal expansion of a group in a language in which $\textrm{Th}(R)$ eliminates quantifiers, and let $C$ be a predicate for a valuational cut in $R$. We identify a condition that implies quantifier elimination for $\textrm{Th}(R,C)$ in the language of $R$ expanded by $C$ and a small number of constants, and which, in turn, is implied by $\textrm{Th}(R,C)$ having quantifier elimination and being universally axiomatizable. The condition applies for example in the case when $C$ is a convex subring of an o-minimal field $R$ and its residue field is o-minimal.

Cut elimination for propositional cyclic proof systems with fixed-point operators

Abstract:Infinitary and cyclic proof systems are proof systems for logical formulas with fixed-point operators or inductive definitions. A cyclic proof system is a restriction of the corresponding infinitary proof system. Hence, these proof systems are generally not the same, as in the cyclic system may be weaker than the infinitary system. For several logics, the infinitary proof systems are shown to be cut-free complete. However, cyclic proof systems are characterized with many unknown problems on the (cut-free) completeness or the cut-elimination property. In this study, we show that the provability of infinitary and cyclic proof systems are the same for some propositional logics with fixed-point operators or inductive definitions and that the cyclic proof systems are cut-free complete.

Abstract:A unified and modular falsification-aware single-succedent Gentzen-style framework is introduced for classical, paradefinite, paraconsistent, and paracomplete logics. This framework is composed of two special inference rules, referred to as the rules of explosion and excluded middle, which correspond to the principle of explosion and the law of excluded middle, respectively. Similar to the cut rule in Gentzen's LK for classical logic, these rules are admissible in cut-free LK. A falsification-aware single-succedent Gentzen-style sequent calculus fsCL for classical logic is formalized based on the proposed framework. The calculus fsCL is obtained from the existing falsification-aware single-succedent Gentzen-style sequent calculus GN4 for Nelson's paradefinite (or paraconsistent) four-valued logic N4 by adding the rules of explosion and excluded middle. A falsification-aware single-succedent Gentzen-style sequent calculus GN3 for Nelson's paracomplete three-valued logic N3 is also obtained from GN4 by adding the rule of explosion. The cut-elimination theorems for fsCL, GN3, and some of their neighbors as well as the Glivenko theorem for fsCL are proved.

Abstract:We say that a Kripke model is a GL-model if the accessibility relation $\prec$ is transitive and converse well-founded. We say that a Kripke model is a D-model if it is obtained by attaching infinitely many worlds $t_1, t_2, \ldots$, and $t_\omega$ to a world $t_0$ of a GL-model so that $t_0 \succ t_1 \succ t_2 \succ \cdots \succ t_\omega$. A non-normal modal logic D, which was studied by Beklemishev (1999), is characterized as follows. A formula $\varphi$ is a theorem of D if and only if $\varphi$ is true at $t_\omega$ in any D-model. D is an intermediate logic between the provability logics GL and S. A Hilbert-style proof system for D is known, but there has been no sequent calculus. In this paper, we establish two sequent calculi for D, and show the cut-elimination theorem. We also introduce new Hilbert-style systems for D by interpreting the sequent calculi. Moreover, we show that D-models can be defined using an arbitrary limit ordinal as well as $\omega$. Finally, we show a general result as follows. Let $X$ and $X^+$ be arbitrary modal logics. If the relationship between semantics of $X$ and semantics of $X^+$ is equal to that of GL and D, then $X^+$ can be axiomatized based on $X$ in the same way as the new axiomatization of D based on GL.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate proof-theoretic aspects of the logics of evidence and truth LETJ and LETF. These logics extend, respectively, Nelson's logic N and the logic of first-degree entailment FDE, also known as Belnap-Dunn four-valued logic, with a classicality operator that recovers classical logic for formulas in its scope. We will present natural deduction and sequent systems for LETJ and LETF, together with proofs of normalization and cut-elimination theorems, respectively. As a corollary, we obtain decidability for both logics.
