Abstract:With the rapid development of the lithium ion battery industry, emerging lithium (Li) enrichment in nature has attracted ever-growing attention due to the biotoxicity of high Li levels. To date, fast lithium ion (Li+) detection remains urgent but is limited by the selectivity, sensitivity, and stability of conventional technologies based on passive response processes. In nature, archaeal plasma membrane ion exchangers (NCLX_Mj) exhibit Li+-gated multi/monovalent ion transport behavior, activated by different stimuli. Inspired by NCLX_Mj, we design a pH-controlled biomimetic Li+-responsive solid-state nanochannel system for on-demand Li+ detection using 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HPBO) units as Li+ recognition groups. Pristine HPBO is not reactive to Li+, whereas negatively charged HPBO enables specific Li+ coordination under alkaline conditions to decrease the ion exchange capacity of nanochannels. On-demand Li+ detection is achieved by monitoring the decline in currents, thereby ensuring precise and stable Li+ recognition (>0.1 mM) in the toxic range of Li+ concentration (>1.5 mM) for human beings. This work provides a new approach to constructing Li+ detection nanodevices and has potential for applications of Li-related industries and medical services.
Highly Selective Lithium Transport through Crown Ether Pillared Angstrom Channels

Abstract:Biological ion channels use the synergistic effects of various strategies to realize highly selective ion sieving. For example, potassium channels use functional groups and angstrom-sized pores to discriminate rival ions and enrich target ions. Inspired by this, we constructed a layered crystal pillared by crown ether that incorporate these strategies to realize high Li+ selectivity. The pillared channels and crown ether have an angstrom-scale size. The crown ether specifically allows the low-barrier transport of Li+. The channels attract and enrich Li+ ions by up to orders of magnitude. As a result, our material sieve Li+ out of various common ions such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Al3+. Moreover, by spontaneously enriching Li+ ions, it realizes an effective Li+/Na+ selectivity of 1422 in artificial seawater where the Li+ concentration is merely 25 μM. We expect this work to spark technologies for the extraction of lithium and other dilute metal ions.

Selective Ion Channel Adsorbents Facilitate Efficient and Low Environmental Impact Extraction of Liquid Lithium Resources

Abstract:As lithium is the cornerstone of green energy development, it is crucial to realize a low environmental impact and efficient lithium extraction process. Ion-sieve adsorption is the most widely used method to extract liquid lithium resources, but this method is only efficient under alkaline conditions for H+ and Mg2+ competing adsorption. Conventional methods are often accompanied by the consumption of quantities of alkali, the generation of solid waste, and the acidification of liquid lithium resources. To address these issues, a selective ion-channel adsorbent was constructed. The composition comprises an ion sieve adsorbent and an organic carrier with a zwitterionic quaternary ammonium base group. This group storages OH- in situ, hinders H+ diffusion, slows down Mg2+ diffusion, and accelerates Li+ diffusion by relying on the difference in binding energies, which reduces the competing adsorption and avoids acidification and solid waste generation. The saturated adsorption capacity (21.38 mg/g) and selectivity of the adsorbent are 4.7 and 24 times higher than that of conventional ion-sieve adsorbent under neutral conditions respectively. The dosage of alkali is 1/256 of the traditional method, the effluent remains neutral and no solid waste is generated. This study presents an environmental and effective adsorbent for lithium extraction.
Artificial Lithium Channels Built from Polymers with Intrinsic Microporosity

Abstract:In sharp contrast to numerous artificial potassium channels developed over the past decade, the study of artificial lithium-transporting channels has remained limited. We demonstrate here the use of an interesting class of polymers with intrinsic microporosity (PIM) for constructing artificial lithium channels. These PIM-derived lithium channels show exceptionally efficient (γLi+ > 40 pS) and highly selective transport of Li+ ions, with selectivity factors of > 10 against both Na+ and K+. By simply adjusting the initial reaction temperature, we can tune the transport property in a way that PIMs synthesized at initial reaction temperatures of 60 °C and 80°C exhibit improved transport efficiency and selectivity, respectively, in the dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine membrane.

Fine-Tuning 2D Heterogeneous Channels for Charge-Lock Enhanced Lithium Separation from Brine

Abstract:The extraction of lithium (Li) from complex brines presents significant challenges due to the interference of competing ions, particularly magnesium (Mg2⁺), which complicates the selective separation process. Herein, a strategy is introduced employing charge-lock enhanced 2D heterogeneous channels for the rapid and selective uptake of Li⁺. This approach integrates porous ZnFe2O4/ZnO nanosheets into Ag+-modulated sub-nanometer interlayer channels, forming channels optimized for Li⁺ extraction. The novelty lies in the charge-lock mechanism, which selectively captures Mg2⁺ ions, thereby facilitating the effective separation of Li from Mg. This mechanism is driven by a charge transfer during the formation of ZnFe2O4/ZnO, rendering O atoms in Fe-O bonds more negatively charged. These negative charges strongly interact with the high charge density of Mg2⁺ ions, enabling the charge-locking mechanism and the targeted capture of Mg2⁺. Optimization with Ag⁺ further improves interlayer spacing, increasing ion transport rates and addressing the swelling issue typical of 2D membranes. The resultant membrane showcases high water flux (44.37 L m⁻2 h⁻¹ bar⁻¹) and an impressive 99.8% rejection of Mg2⁺ in real brine conditions, achieving a Li⁺/Mg2⁺ selectivity of 59.3, surpassing existing brine separation membranes. Additionally, this membrane demonstrates superior cyclic stability, highlighting its high potential for industrial applications.

Abstract:Unlike many other biologically relevant ions (Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Cl − , etc) and protons, whose cellular concentrations are closely regulated by highly selective channel proteins, Li + ion is unusual in that its concentration is well tolerated over many orders of magnitude and that no lithium‐specific channel proteins have so far been identified. While one naturally evolved primary pathway for Li + ions to traverse across the cell membrane is through sodium channels by competing with Na + ions, highly sought‐after artificial lithium‐transporting channels remain a major challenge to develop. Here we show that sulfur‐containing organic nanotubes derived from intramolecularly H‐bonded helically folded aromatic foldamers of 3.6 Å in hollow cavity diameter could facilitate highly selective and efficient transmembrane transport of Li + ions, with high transport selectivity factors of 15.3 and 19.9 over Na + and K + ions, respectively.

Abstract:Inspired by ion pair cotransport channels in biological systems, a bionic nanochannel modified with lithium ion pair receptors is constructed for selective transport and enrichment of lithium ions (Li+). NH2-pillar[5]arene (NP5) is chosen as ion pair receptors, and the theoretical simulation and NMR titration experiments illustrate that NP5 has good affinity for the ion pair of LiCl through a strong host-guest interaction at the molecular level. Due to the confinement effect and ion pair cooperation recognition, an NP5-based receptor was introduced into an artificial PET nanochannel. An I-V test indicated that the NP5 channel realized the highly selective recognition for Li+. Meanwhile, transmembrane transport and COMSOL simulation experiments proved that the NP5 channel achieved the transport and enrichment of Li+ through the cooperative interaction between NP5 and LiCl. Moreover, the receptor solution of transmembrane transport LiCl in the NP5 channel was used to cultivate wheat seedlings, which obviously promoted their growth. This nanochannel based on the ion pair recognition will be much useful for practical applications like metal ion extraction, enrichment, and recycle.

Abstract:The recycling and reuse of lithium resources from spent lithium-ion batteries has become a major research area to address the contradiction between limited resources and increasing market demand. Membrane separation, as a highly efficent and easy-to-operate process, has attracted more attention among various lithium recycling technologies. However, the complicated ion migration process results in an insufficient understanding on the lithium ion diffusion mechanism in membrane separation. In this Review, the recent research efforts on membrane separation technology for lithium recovery were summariezed with the mechanism of ion selectivity through membranes being emphasized. To illustrate the ion diffusion mechanism, the ion transportation process though membrane was divided into 3 sequential stages: the entering of ions into the channel openings of the membrane, the diffusion of ions within the channels, and the ions return to the solution on the other side of membrane. In each stage, the main factors that affect lithium ion selectivity through membranes were discussed, including the ion charge, hydration energy, channel size and functional groups. It was found that the selectivity of the membrane separation process is highly correlated to the ion hydration energy and the interaction between ion and functional groups. In particular, the ion hydration energy is the key factor affecting the entry stage, while the anchoring strength between the ion and the functional groups of the channel wall dominates the diffusion stage within the channel. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges and future development trends of membrane separation technology for lithium recovery.

Abstract:Inspired by the biological ion channel, a nonporous crystalline material‐based membrane with a rigidity‐confined ion channel is fabricated. It empowers excellent Li+/Na+, Li+/K+, Li+/Mg2+, and Li+/Ca2+ separations and enables a one‐step lithium extraction strategy from natural brines rich in Na+, K+, and Mg2+ without utilizing chemicals or creating solid waste. Membranes with precise Li+/Na+ and Li+/K+ separations are imperative for lithium extraction from brine to address the lithium supply shortage. However, achieving this goal remains a daunting challenge due to the similar valence, chemical properties, and subtle atomic‐scale distinctions among these monovalent cations. Herein, inspired by the strict size‐sieving effect of biological ion channels, a membrane is presented based on nonporous crystalline materials featuring structurally rigid, dimensionally confined, and long‐range ordered ion channels that exclusively permeate naked Li+ but block Na+ and K+. This naked‐Li+‐sieving behavior not only enables unprecedented Li+/Na+ and Li+/K+ selectivities up to 2707.4 and 5109.8, respectively, even surpassing the state‐of‐the‐art membranes by at least two orders of magnitude, but also demonstrates impressive Li+/Mg2+ and Li+/Ca2+ separation capabilities. Moreover, this bioinspired membrane has to be utilized for creating a one‐step lithium extraction strategy from natural brines rich in Na+, K+, and Mg2+ without utilizing chemicals or creating solid waste, and it simultaneously produces hydrogen. This research has proposed a new type of ion‐sieving membrane and also provides an envisioning of the design paradigm and development of advanced membranes, ion separation, and lithium extraction.

Ultrahigh Lithium Selective Transport in Two-Dimensional Confined Ice.

Abstract:Inspired by selective ion transport in biological membrane proteins, researchers developed artificial ion channels that sieve monovalent cations, catering to the increasing lithium demand. In this work, we engineered an ion transport channel based on the confined ice within two-dimensional (2D) capillaries and found that the permselectivity of monovalent cations depends on the anisotropy of the confined ice. Particularly, the 2D confined ice showed an anomalous lithium selective transport along the (002) direction in the vermiculite capillary, with the Li+/Na+ and Li+/K+ permselectivity reaching up to 556 ± 86 and 901 ± 172, respectively, superior to most ion-selective channels. However, the 2D confined ice along the (100) direction showed less Li+ permselectivity. Additionally, the anisotropy of 2D confined ice can be tuned by adjusting the interlayer spacing. By providing insights into the ion transport in the 2D confined ice, our work may inspire more design of monovalent ion-selective channels for efficient lithium separation.

Abstract:The development of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly lithium extraction techniques is essential to meet the growing global demand for lithium-ion batteries. In this work, a dual-channel ion conductor membrane was designed for a concentration-driven lithium-selective ion diffusion process. The membrane was based on a porous lithium-ion conductor, and its pores were modified with an anion-exchange polymer. Thus, the sintered lithium-ion conductors provided highly selective cation transport channels, and the functionalized nanopores with positive charges enabled the complementary permeation of anions to balance the transmembrane charges. As a result, the dual-channel membrane realized an ultrahigh Li+/Na+ selectivity of similar to 1389 with a competitive Li+ flux of 21.6 mmol center dot m(-2)center dot h(-1) in a diffusion process of the LiCl/NaCl binary solution, which was capable of further maintaining the high selectivity over 7 days of testing. Therefore, this work demonstrates the great potential of the dual-channel membrane design for high-performing lithium extraction from aqueous resources with low energy consumption and minimal environmental impact.

Abstract:In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the separation mechanism of Na+/Li+ by graphene nanopores under different electric fields and concentrations. The results showed that the Li+ selectivity of nanopores can mainly be attributed to the association-dissociation mechanism near nanopores and not the dehydration of Na+/Li+. Ions will pass through three typical regions near nanopores: the low ion association region, high ion association region, and high water density region. Abnormal enhancement of ion association occurs on cation side near nanopores, which can be attributed to the difference of ion transports under confinement. The association-dissociation dynamics of Na+/Li+ and Cl− near nanopores can be significantly affected by adjusting the electric field intensity and pore size. In contrast, the effect of ion concentration on ion selectivity is less obvious, except for a very high concentration. Due to the confinement of nanopores, the association of cations and anions near nanopores will be enhanced. Meanwhile, ions need to dissociate from ion-associated species before being transported through nanopores. Thus, ion permeation will be affected by the ion association degree as well as the stability of ion-associated species.
Ion-selective Supramolecular Membrane with Ph-Regulated Smart Nanochannels for Lithium Extraction

Abstract:Tunable gating ion-conducting membranes with high water permeability and precise ion selectivity remain urgently demanded in smart nanofiltration for efficient lithium extraction. Herein, inspired by the filtration function of protein channels, we report a smart and high-performance supramolecular membrane constructed via coordination between quaternary ammonium ligands (m-phenylenediamine/polyethyleneimine) and metal ion center (Cu2+). The pore architecture of the supramolecular membrane is dynamic and can be switched by applying pH stimulus, where coordinated interchain expands when exposed to acidic operating conditions and induces concomitantly reinforced electrostatic exclusion due to enhanced local charge density. The tunable gating regularity enables operando modulation of precise ionic separation in situ. The resulting membrane exhibits significantly enhanced water permeance (19.8 L m(-2) h(-1)center dot bar(-1)) and simultaneously promoted Li+/Mg2+ selectivity (RMg2+ = 96.4 %), surpassing typical trade-off between permeability and selectivity at pH 3 condition. This study demonstrates the amazing capability of environmental-responsive regulation of membrane pore-channel structure, and provides inspiration for engineering advanced supramolecular membranes for lithium extraction and beyond.
Selective Solid–Liquid Extraction of Lithium Cation Using Tripodal Sulfate-Binding Receptors Driven by Electrostatic Interactions

Abstract:Owing to the important role of and increasing demand for lithium resources, lithium extraction is crucial. The use of molecular extractants is a promising strategy for selective lithium recovery, in which the interaction between lithium and the designed extractant can be manipulated at the molecular level. Herein, we demonstrate that anion receptors of tripodal hexaureas can selectively extract Li2SO4 solids into water containing DMSO (0.8% water) compared to other alkali metal sulfates. The hexaurea receptor with terminal hexyl chains displays the best Li+ extraction selectivity at 2-fold over Na+ and 12.5-fold over K+. The driving force underpinning selective lithium extraction is due to the combined interactions of Li+-SO42− electrostatics and the ion–dipole interaction of the lithium–receptor (carbonyl groups and N atoms); the latter was found to be cation size dependent, as supported by computational calculations. This work indicates that anion binding receptors could drive selective cation extraction, thus providing new insights into the design of receptors for ion recognition and separation.

Ion-"distillation" for isolating lithium from lake brine

Abstract:Lithium demands increase dramatically and make it highly attractive to develop advanced ion separation technology/material. However, high Mg2+/Li+ ratio impedes the extraction due to the difficulties in separation of the two ions. Here, we propose an ion-"distillation" technology based on electro-membrane stacking for the extraction of Li+ from lake brine (Mg2+/Li+ ratio: 31.58). This technology employs commercially available monovalent ion-selective membranes, and ions are driven by electric. Using the four-stage ion-"distillation" technology, selectivity values of 26,177 and 27,000 are achieved between Li+ and Mg2+ and between Cl- and SO42-, respectively. The electro-stripping mechanism when monovalent ion migrating across the membranes probably magnitude the Li+ selectivity, which is higher than the other reported values in the literature for membrane processes, and the purity of the final LiCl product is greater than battery grade (99.95%). The proposed process can potentially be applied in efficient ion fractionation and special separations.

Abstract:Li+ encounters a substantial concentration disadvantage in brines, and the co‐intercalation of Na+ diminishes Li+ selectivity. To address this issue, this work enhances the energy barrier for Na+ insertion through prelithiation strategies applied to the 1D channels of FePO4 crystal, thereby improving Li+ selectivity, and further investigating the prelithiation effect with particle size and morphology control. Extracting lithium resources from seawater and brine can promote the development of the new energy materials industry. The electrochemical method is green and efficient. Iron phosphate (FePO4) crystal, with its 1D ion channel, holds significant potential as a primary lithium extraction electrode material. Li+ encounters a substantial concentration disadvantage in brines, and the co‐intercalation of Na+ diminishes Li+ selectivity. To address this issue, this work enhances the energy barrier for Na+ insertion through prelithiation strategies applied to the 1D channels of FePO4 crystal, thereby improving Li+ selectivity, and further investigating the prelithiation effect with particle size and morphology control. The results indicate that the Li(4C‐40%)FePO4// Activated carbon(AC) system enhances selectivity of lithium. The Li(4C‐40%)FePO4 with size diameter of 2500 nm demonstrates an energy consumption of 0.79 Wh mol−1 and a purity of 97.94% for lithium extraction at a unit lithium extraction of 5.93 mmol g−1 in simulated brine. Li(4C‐40%)FePO4‐nanoplates demonstrate the most optimal lithium extraction performance among the three morphologies due to their lamellar structure's short ion diffusion path in the [010] channel, favoring Li+ diffusion. The diffusion energy barriers of Li+ and Na+ are calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) before and after prelithiation, showing good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) is an important energy metal in the 21st century. However, the selective recovery of Li is still a big challenge, especially from acidic solutions with multiple metal ions existence. Herein we report a new ion pair induced mechanism for selectively extracting Li+ from acidic chloride solutions by tributyl phosphate (TBP). It is shown that the acidity and the chloride ions in the aqueous phase have great effects on the extraction of Li+. The FT-IR, UV-Vis and ESI-MS experiments provide solid evidence for the formation of ion-pair complex [Li(TBP)(n)(H2O)(m)](+)[FeCl4](-) (n = 1, 2, 3; m = 0, 1) in the organic phase, which brings about the effective and efficient extraction of Li+. This mechanism can overcome the Hofmeister bias and allow for the selective extraction of Li+ from the extremely hydrophilic chlorides. It has also been proved that the loaded Li in TBP can be effectively stripped by concentrated HCl solution with a Li/Fe separation factor > 500. The understanding of the ion-pair transport mechanism is helpful for optimizing the recovery process or further advancing more efficient recovery techniques for Li from acidic liquor. Lithium Isotope Electromigration Separation in an Ionic Liquid–Crown Ether System: Understanding the Role of Driving Forces

Abstract:Lithium isotopes (Li-6 and Li-7) play an important role in the nuclear industry. The development of green and efficient separation methods is a top priority for the lithium isotope industry. In this work, an "aqueous solutionlionic liquid-crown ether organic solutionlaqueous solution" system was constructed and used for lithium isotope electromigration separation. The influence and synergy of Li+ diffusion, electromigration, and chelation of crown ether on Li+ migration and isotope separation were investigated, discussed, and verified carefully. The separating laws were summarized. The process and mechanisms of lithium isotope separation were explored preliminarily. The presence of crown ether in organic solution and the introduction of electric field can change the migration ratio and lithium isotope enrichment effect of different parts in the system. The synergy of Li+ diffusion, electromigration, and chelation of crown ether can change the behaviors of Li+ migration and isotope separation significantly. What's more important, the driving forces are not constant but dynamic. The diffusion increased with the increasing concentration gradient among different parts. The chelation decreased with the increasing Li+ concentration in organic solution. The electromigration also changed with the varied chemical speciation of Li+. The results helped in understanding the roles of driving forces more clearly and provided a foundation for developing green and efficient methods for lithium isotope separation.
Engineering Highly Efficient Li+ Responsive Nanochannels Via Host-Guest Interaction and Photochemistry Regulation.

Abstract:Artificial nanochannels have seen great progress in energy storage, molecular filters, nanofluidic diodes, and biosensors. Precisely recognizing and transporting molecules or ions underpin the basis of artificial nanochannels. Here, we report highly efficient Li+ responsive nanochannels by design of functionalized porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. The 12-crown-4 unit was tethered to the synthesized spiropyran molecule, creating a smart Li+ responsive element, photochromic crowned spiropyran (CE-SP). The crown unit can specifically bind with Li+ while exempting the harassment of other metallic cations; and importantly, the spiropyran moiety possesses reversible photochemistry response, adding the flexibility to regulate ion transport behaviors. Upon the ultraviolet light stimulus, hydrophobic CE-SP molecules transform to positively charged crowned merocyanine (CE-MC), which can further convert to oxygen-negative ions in weak alkaline environment, thereby forming O--Li+ interaction. Such structural evolutions enable to deftly tune the surface charge and wettability of the nanochannels, and thus ingeniously manipulate Li+ recognition profiled by ionic current signal. Moreover, electrically-driven release of the captured Li+ can be realized in an amiable condition, showing controllable capture-to-release ability. Finite element simulation unveils the fundamental mechanisms of ion transport pertaining to Li+ recognition events in the nanoconfinement. This work thus paves a way to construct high-performance Li+-selective nanodevice, and holds promise for Li+-related electrochemistry energy research.
