Abstract:Based on a literature survey and a field trip with specimen examination, statistical analysis including principal components analysis (PCA) on morphological characters have been carried out on Rhododendron mariae and related taxa. Cluster analysis and PCA showed three independent groups, which corresponded to three species except R. loniceriflorum. As a consequence, nine taxa are reduced to synonyms of R. mariae, and two new combinations, viz R. mariae subsp. microphyton, and R. mariae subsp. flumineum are made. Rhododendron microphyton var. trichanthum is reduced to a synonym of R. mariae subsp. microphyton, and R. malipoense to a synonym of R. mariae subsp. flumineum. Three names are synonymized and a new combination, viz R. chryocalyx subsp. meridionale, is proposed within R. chryocalyx. The third entity, R. naamkwanense, has got two new synonyms. Rhododendron loniceriflorum, with whitish pubescence on the inner corolla surface, is recognized as the fourth distinct species. Each entity is illustrated with line drawings for identification.

Abstract:Rohdea wattii (C.B. Clarke) Yamashita & M.N. Tamura is a subtropical Asiatic species rediscovered after the type collection with a gap of 137 years from Manipur, India. Detailed taxonomic description, color plate, ecology, and nomenclature notes have been provided for this potential economically valuable wild ornamental species. Lectotype for the name R. wattii (≡Campylandra wattii C.B. Clarke) is designated here.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a revision of the Rhododenron taipaoense complex, including R. taipaoense and eight other named species, based on literature survey, field collections and observations, inspection of herbarium specimens, statistical analysis of morphological characters, and SEM observation of seed shape and testa. We evaluated all characters that have previously been used to diagnose these species: indumentum of young shoots and abaxial surfaces of leaves; filament dimensions; style base; leaf color, size, and apex shape; flower number per inflorescence; corolla length; and length of the stamen and pistil. Cluster analysis of 146 individuals showed that individuals from different populations are interdigitated, irrespective of traditional taxonomic limits. Analysis of morphological data using principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) likewise shows a continual gradation between populations, rather than disjunctures between named species. Consequently, only one species is recognized in the present paper, and R. apricum, R. falcinellum (R. apricum var. falcinellum), R. florulentum, R. hepticum, R. piceum, R. rufulum, R. spadiceum, and R. rufoindumentum (nom. nud.) are all reduced to synonyms of R. taipaoense.

Abstract:Taxonomic revision of Schizotechium (Caryophyllaceae) in Nepal was done based on the extensive study of herbarium specimens deposited in various herbaria as well as our own collections. According to this study, Nepal is home to four species of Schizotechium: S. delavayi, S. devendrae, S. monospermum and S. paniculatum. Schizotechium devendrae that was collected from several locations in Nepal is reported to be a new record for Nepal. Schizotechium delavayi and Stellaria monosperma f. scabrifolia have been found to be conspecific, but due to prior publication of S. delavayi, S. monosperma f. scabrifolia has been treated as a synonym of S. delavayi. Lectotypification has been done for Stellaria crispata, Stellaria glandulifera and Stellaria nyalamensis. Previous studies have ignored to mention a Schizotechium species as the type of the genus Schizotechium. Therefore, this study considered Schizotechium monospermum as the type species of the genus Schizotechium in order to validly publish the genus in compliance with the rules of ICN. Taxonomic treatment, habitat, distribution, photo plates, as well as keys to each species, have been provided.

Abstract:In this paper, Carex chungii and other five names at species rank, plus one variety and one form, all from of C. sect. Mitratae, were revised. They constitute a group of morphologically very similar taxa, difficult to tell apart. Our study was based on literature survey, fieldwork, herbarium specimens, statistical analysis of morphological characters and SEM observations of achenes and perigynia. Analysis of morphological data of 94 individuals from eleven populations using principal component analysis (PCA) revealed five clusters, which we consequently considered to correspond to five species. The achenes of Carex genkaiensis were strikingly different from all the other species regarding achene apex contracted into a 0.2-0.5 mm long neck-like appendage (vs. into a discoid-annulate style-base), as well as its perigynium indumentum (pubescent vs. sparsely pubescent). Carex anhuiensis, C. xuanchengensis and C. truncatirostris f. erostris are all synonymized to C. truncatirostris. The previously recognized Carex kamagariensis from Japan is synonymized to C. chungii. Carex chungii var. rigida is recognized as specific rank and the new name C. nanpingensis is proposed. Our study is the first effort to address the taxonomy of this complicate group as a whole in its entire range.

Abstract:Kaempferia subglobosa ( Zingiberaceae ) is described and illustrated as a new species of Kaempferia subg. Protanthium from Tak Province, northern Thailand. It can easily be distinguished from all other species of subg. Protanthium by having branched storage roots with numerous, tiny, lateral and terminal subglobose to ovoid tubers. The diagnostic characters of this taxon are discussed and compared with those of the morphologically most similar species K. rotunda . Detailed photographs of plants and dissected flowers, and information on phenology, distribution and ecology, are provided. Interestingly, a red dwarf honeybee, Apis florea , is likely a pollinator. The IUCN conservation status of Vulnerable is assigned for K. subglobosa . In addition, the names K. uttaraditensis and K. kamthornii are synonymized with K. albiflora and K. takensis , respectively. As a result of this taxonomic revision, the Flora of Thailand currently harbours 14 species of the subgenus of which 9 strictly endemic. Two alternative updated identification keys for Kaempferia subg. Protanthium are also presented.

Abstract:A systematic monograph is presented for Hydnora (Hydnoraceae), a poorly known genus of holoparasitic plants distributed across Africa, Madagascar and southern Arabia. Species of Hydnora are characterised by their underground habit, unusual fleshy flowers and complete absence of leaves or photosynthetic tissue. This is the first detailed monograph of the genus Hydnora since 1935 and is informed by a comprehensive survey of herbarium specimens and literature. Detailed descriptions, full synonymy, distribution maps and discussion concerning confusable taxa are provided for each species, along with notes on ethnobotany, ecology and conservation. We place particular emphasis on the taxonomic value of osmophore geometry and positioning in living and dried material, which are highly consistent within species. We also provide the first detailed assessment of host range across the genus. Hydnora hanningtonii Rendle and H. solmsiana Dinter are reinstated from synonymy, and H. bolinii S.Hatt is newly described here. The infrageneric classification is reviewed and a key is provided for both living and dried material. Species are accompanied by both illustrations and photographs of living and dried material where possible.

Abstract:A new species of the genus Ochradenus (Resedaceae), O. lakhpatensis, is described and illustrated. It is known from just five populations endemic to a relatively restricted area in Western India (Gujarat state), constituting the easternmost known records of the genus. It is morphologically similar to O. harsusiticus but differs in having pedicellate flowers and fruits, a higher number of stamens, wider fruit, and open fruit apex. A detailed description of the new species including colour photographs and an identification key to distinguish currently accepted Ochradenus species are provided. A preliminary conservation assessment of the species is also conducted under IUCN categories and criteria at the global level, resulting in the proposal of the Endangered category. In addition, we propose the exclusion of O. baccatus from the Indian flora, as it seems to be erroneous record.

Abstract:The number of species in Sordariomycetes has increased dramatically. However, some genera discovered earlier are poorly known, documented and thus need to be redescribed. This paper continues the work on 'Taxonomic studies of some often overlooked Diaporthomycetidae and Sordariomycetidae'. We provide descriptions, notes and figures or drawings for 71 over-looked genera belonging to Bertiaceae, Ceratostomataceae, Chaetosphaerellaceae, Coronophoraceae, Niessliaceae, Nitschkiaceae and Scortechiniaceae in Hypocreomycetidae based on observation of type materials, authentic specimens or studying the literature. The taxonomic placements of the genera are re-defined based on morphology and/or phylogenetic results. As a result, Gonatobotrys and Neotrotteria, which are often overlooked and have unstable taxonomic placements in previous studies, belong to Ceratostomataceae based on morphology and phylogeny. The lichenicolous genus, Nitschkiopsis, which lacks DNA sequence data, is placed in Niessliaceae based on its setose ascomata and hyaline ellipsoidal ascospores similar to Niesslia species. The type species of Cryptosphaerella lacks molecular data and is morphologically similar to Cryptosphaeria or Coronophora, both of which have ostiolate ascomata. Therefore, it is placed in Sordariomycetes, not in Scortechiniaceae, whose species are characterized by ascomata that lack ostioles. In addition, the taxonomy of species with ascomata lacking ostioles in Cryptosphaerella have been revised and introduced as two new genera; Neocryptosphaerella and Pseudocryptosphaerella based on the phylogenetic result. Seven new combinations proposed are Fracchiaea myricoides (= Coronophora myricoides), Neocryptosphaerella celata (= Cryptosphaerella celata), N. globosa (= Cry. globosa), Pseudocryptosphaerella costaricensis (= Cry. costaricensis), P. cylindriformis (= Cry. cylindriformis), P. elliptica (= Cry. elliptica) and P. malindensis (= Cry. malindensis).
