Abstract:Determination of underconstrained systems using traditional theory may cause a nonconservative solution or even lead to error. The fundamentals of the concept and general formulations for kinematic path are derived such that they can be used for determination of both elastic deformation and change in geometry experienced in underconstrained systems. The condition of orthogonality is used such that the existence of such a space having the property of the general loads orthogonal to geometric displacement is thus proved. Numerical examples in the literature are used to verify the proposed methods. The efficacy of the proposed procedures implemented in engineering application is finally demonstrated under erection simulation.

Abstract:We discuss how a class of difficult kinematic problems can play an important role in an introductory course in stimulating students' reasoning on more complex physical situations. The problems presented here have an elementary analysis once certain symmetry features of the motion are revealed. We also explore some unexpected directions these problems lead us.

Abstract:The main theme of the article is the study of discrete systems of material points subjected to constraints not only of a geometric type (holonomic constraints) but also of a kinematical type (anolonomic constraints). The setting up of the equations of motion follows a simple principle which generalizes the holonomic case. Furthermore, attention is paid to the fact that the kinematical variables retain their velocity meaning, without resorting to the pseudo-velocity technique. Particular situations are examined in which the modeling of the constraints can be carried out in several ways to evaluate their effective equivalence. Numerous examples, many of which taken from the most recurring ones in the literature, are provided in order to illustrate the proposed theory.

Abstract:In a given geometry, the kinematics of a congruence of curves is described by a set of three quantities called expansion, rotation, and shear. The equations governing the evolution of these quantities are referred to as kinematic equations. In this paper, the kinematics of congruence of curves in a metric-affine geometry are analysed. Without assuming an underlying theory of gravity, we derive a generalised form of the evolution equations for expansion, namely, Raychaudhuri equation (timelike congruences) and Sachs optical equation (null congruences). The evolution equations for rotation and shear of both timelike and null congruences are also derived. Generalising the deviation equation, we find that torsion and non-metricity contribute to a relative acceleration between neighbouring curves. We briefly discuss the interpretation of the expansion scalars and derive an equation governing angular diameter distances. The effects of torsion and non-metricity on the distances are found to be dependent on which curves are chosen as photon trajectories. We also show that the rotation of a hypersurface orthogonal congruence (timelike or null) is a purely non-Riemannian feature.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the general problem of obstacle avoidance based on dynamical system. The modulation matrix is developed by introducing orthogonal coordinates, which makes the modulation matrix more reasonable. The new trajectory's direction can be represented by the linear combination of orthogonal coordinates. A orthogonal coordinates manipulating approach is proposed by introducing rotating matrix to solve the local minimal problem and provide more reasonable motions in 3-D or higher dimension space. The proposed method also provide a solution for patrolling around a convex shape. Experimental results on several designed dynamical systems demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this contribution, we present a novel approach for solving the obstacle problem for (linear) conservation laws. Usually, given a conservation law with an initial datum, the solution is uniquely determined. How to incorporate obstacles, i.e., inequality constraints on the solution so that the resulting solution is still "physically reasonable" and obeys the obstacle, is unclear. The proposed approach involves scaling down the velocity of the conservation law when the solution approaches the obstacle. We demonstrate that this leads to a reasonable solution and show that, when scaling down is performed in a discontinuous fashion, we still obtain a suitable velocity - and the solution satisfying a discontinuous conservation law. We illustrate the developed solution concept using numerical approximations.

Abstract:At first we study Galiullin's construction of Bertrand problem and compare it with Szebehely's method, latter is based on a first order partial differential equation for the unknown potential that produces a prescribed monoparametric family of planar trajectories. In the second part of the paper we study inverse problem of the trajectories such that the corresponding force is a nonconservative position dependent one, satisfying the non-vanishing curl condition and not the gradient of a potential function. Recently this force has been introduced and popularized by Berry and Shukla ( J. Phys. A 45 (2012) 305201). We connect the inverse problem dynamics of these curl force trajectories with the generalized potentials obtained by Sarlet-Mestdag-Prince (Rep. Math. Phys.72(2013) 65-84) from the inverse problem of φ(x, y) = xym for m ?= 0, m ?= 1. Finally we show that the analog of these curly trajectories in momentum space can be manifested as kinetic energies of the pair of Calogero-Leyvraz Hamiltonians (J. Nonlinear Math. Phys. 26 (2019) 147-154) describing the motion of a particle in a magnetic field with friction.

Equations of motion for general nonholonomic systems from the d'Alembert principle via an algebraic method

Abstract:The aim of this study is to present an alternative way to deduce the equations of motion of general (i.e., also nonlinear) nonholonomic constrained systems starting from the d'Alembert principle and proceeding by an algebraic procedure. The two classical approaches in nonholonomic mechanics -- Cetaev method and vakonomic method -- are treated on equal terms, avoiding integrations or other steps outside algebraic operations. In the second part of the work we compare our results with the standard forms of the equations of motion associated to the two method and we discuss the role of the transpositional relation and of the commutation rule within the question of equivalence and compatibility of the Cetaev and vakonomic methods for general nonholonomic systems.

Abstract:The classical nonholomic equations for a mechanical system subject to linear nonintegrable constraints are presented in Section 2. These are displayed in a geodesic form by the use of a suitable covariant derivative (due to Synge) in Section 3. We then express the Frobenius integrability of the constraint distribution by means of a zero torsion condition for the above Synge connection. Section 4 provides a self-contained derivation from a nonholonomic variational problem of the equations of motion for nonholonomic systems. These equations, which are nonequivalent to the previous ones, were first developed by Arnold and Kozlov and called vakonomic (vak) equations. Sections 5 and 6 are concerned with a geometrical interpretation of the terms occurring in the right-hand side of the vak equations. Under quite general assumptions, these latter can be described in terms of the curvature of an Ehresmann (local) connection whose horizontal subspace is precisely the constraint distribution. Furthermore, by introducing a suitable Lie group action on the configuration manifold, the local Ehresmann connection can be made into a global one which coincides with the mechanical connection of Smale-Marsden. Section 7 gives a motivation, in terms of Hopf-Rinow and Ambrose-Singer theorems, for the nonclassical requirement of the assignment of the reaction forces' values in the initial kinematical state in vakonomic mechanics. Section 8 develops a fundamental approach to the description of holonomic, i.e. geometrical constraints. We describe the reaction forces by using the Poincaré dual (a class of closed 1-forms) of the orientable constraint submanifold. As an instance of the construction developed in Sections 5 and 6, we consider in Section 9 the disk rolling without sliding on the plane.

Geometrically constrained particle dynamics revisited: Equation of motion in terms of the normal curvature of the constraint manifold

Abstract:We revisit the problem of the particle dynamics subject to a geometric holonomic constraint of codimension 1 in spatial dimensions d =2 and 3. In the absence of dissipation, we show that by solving the Lagrangian multiplier in a general fashion, the external potential independent part, the net normal force, of the equation of motion corresponds to precisely to the curvature of the trajectory on the constraint space multiplied by twice the kinetic energy. The tangent the trajectory is the instantaneous velocity. In d = 3, this term equals the second fundamental form II of the constraint surface evaluated on the unit tangent vector in the direction of velocity. Using these result we establish the relation between constrained particle dynamics with geodesic equations and derive intriguing kinematic implications using theorems from fundamental differential geometry.

Abstract:The classic brachistrochrone problem is standard material in intermediate mechanics. Many variations exist including some accessible to introductory students. While a quantitative solution isn’t feasible in introductory classes, qualitative discussions can be very beneficial since kinematics, Newton’s laws, energy conservation, and motion along curved trajectories all play a role. In this work, we describe an activity focusing on a qualitative understanding of the brachistochrone and examine the performance of freshmen, juniors, and graduate students. Abstract:The main topic of this work concerns the formulation of the equations of motion and the consequent energy balance that they imply for this type of systems, In particular, the analytical development that we will carry out on the equations of motion has as its objective the energy balance of the system. the delicate question of defining the displacements admitted by the system leads, as we shall see, to a non-univocal definition of the energy of the system, which finds coherence and unity for a particular class of nonholonomic constraints.

Abstract:The geometrical structure of constraints leads to the important conclusion that components of velocities and accelerations in the normal space of the constraint hypersurface are totally determined by the constraints. Orthogonal base vectors of the constraint's normal and tangent spaces can be obtained by the QR decomposition with column permutation. A numerical method of closed-loop multibody systems with singular configurations is presented, in which the traditional hypothesis on independence of constraints is abandoned. Instead of correcting constraint violations at the end of each integration step, positions and velocities are modified to satisfy their constraint equations before they are used to form equations of motion. Such an approach can collaborate with any standard ODE solver. In order to systematically generate constraint equations and obtain the corresponding joint's reaction forces, rotational and translational constraints of a closed-loop are standardized as part of six explicit equations, and a clear relationship between Lagrange multipliers and joint's reaction forces is derived based on the principle of virtual power equivalence. The proposed method can dynamically identify independent constraints and modify the equations of motion accordingly. The numerical examples validated its effectiveness.

Abstract:Direct collocation methods are powerful tools to solve trajectory optimization problems in robotics. While their resulting trajectories tend to be dynamically accurate, they may also present large kinematic errors in the case of constrained mechanical systems, i.e., those whose state coordinates are subject to holonomic or nonholonomic constraints, like loop-closure or rolling-contact constraints. These constraints confine the robot trajectories to an implicitly-defined manifold, which complicates the computation of accurate solutions. Discretization errors inherent to the transcription of the problem easily make the trajectories drift away from this manifold, which results in physically inconsistent motions that are difficult to track with a controller. This paper reviews existing methods to deal with this problem and proposes new ones to overcome their limitations. Current approaches either disregard the kinematic constraints (which leads to drift accumulation) or modify the system dynamics to keep the trajectory close to the manifold (which adds artificial forces or energy dissipation to the system). The methods we propose, in contrast, achieve full drift elimination on the discrete trajectory, or even along the continuous one, without artificial modifications of the system dynamics. We illustrate and compare the methods using various examples of different complexity.

Abstract:The motion of two interacting bodies along a straight line in a medium with quadratic resistance is considered. The force of interaction between the bodies is a control action, on which no restrictions are imposed. The problem of moving each of the bodies of the system over the given distance is solved, provided that the bodies are at rest at the beginning and at the end of the movement. In the constructed motion, moments of time at which the interaction force instantly changes the velocities of the bodies alternate with time intervals in which the interaction force is zero or provides the equality of the velocities of the bodies.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to analyze, by means of a kinematic approach, the problem of the impact between rigid bodies, when the surfaces involved in the impulsive phenomenon are of finite extent. The formulation here adopted permits to use the Gauss variational principle of “least compulsion” and to formulate the dynamic evolution of the system, after an impact, as a minimization problem. In this case, among all the possible subsequent motions, the real one is that which minimizes the kinetic energy connected to the sudden velocities variations. Interesting results are obtained in the case of the impact between a rigid column (either monolithic or made of several blocks) and a rigid ground. In particular, it can be shown that if the previous motion of a rigid block is a rotation around its base corner edge, the motion after the impact is either a rototranslation or merely a translation, depending on the dimensional ratio. In any case, the subsequent motion is characterized by a component of sliding, so that the impact plays the role of filter between the possible degrees of freedom of the system and, at the same time, determines a possible coupling between rotation and translation. This conclusion is a novelty with respect to the results obtained in other papers [4–6], where a classical approach for the impact has been adopted.

Abstract:The compressible Euler equations in R-N with Coriolis force is the fundamental mathematical model for the atmospheric dynamics. We use the vector and matrix technique to the N-dimensional Euler equations, to construct the following Cartesian vector form solutions u = b(t) + A(t)x. One advantage of this approach is that the Euler equations with Coriolis force can be solved both theoretically and algebraically, which can be accomplished by constructing appropriate matrices A(t), and vector b(t). We can obtain the new exact solutions using the required matrices A(t) and vector b(t). As exact solutions for the compressible Euler equations are rare, the new exact solutions are valuable for the verification of the corresponding computational methods.

Abstract:Presented is description of kinematics and dynamics of material points with internal degrees of freedom moving in a Riemannian manifold. The models of internal degrees of freedom we concentrate on are based on the orthogonal and affine groups. Roughly speaking, we consider infinitesimal gyroscopes and homogeneously deformable gyroscopes (affienly-rigid bodies) in curved manifolds. We follow our earlier models of extended rigid and affinely-rigid bodies moving in a flat space. It is well known that in curved spaces in general there is no well-defined concept of extended rigid or affinely-rigid body. Our infinitesimal models are mathematically well defined and physically they may be interpreted as an approximate description of "small" rigid and affinely-rigid bodies. We derive equations of motion and show how internal degrees of freedom interact with spatial geometry, first of all with the curvature but also with the torsion. Integrability and degeneracy problems are discussed.

Abstract:The Paden–kahan subproblem is a simple and flexible method to solve the closed-form inverse resolution but limited by the geometrical structure of robots, which is very difficult to be kept because of processing and installation. Therefore, a closed-form solution on arbitrary configurations is an important issue in the field of robotic inverse kinematics. A novel second subproblem is firstly proposed in this study based on the product-of-exponentials model adapting to the two arbitrary axes without geometric constraints (parallel, vertical, disjoint, and so on). Furthermore, the algebraic methods involving the basic properties of the screw theory and Rodrigues’ rotation formula are employed for the solution, which makes the constraint equations of the second subproblem solvable for arbitrary configurations. This methodology can be applied to the inverse solutions of 5-degree-of-freedom robots that satisfies the Pieper criterion and can express the inverse solutions via two common formulas. Finally, the simulation and the real-world experiment demonstrated the accuracy of the method and the validity, respectively.

Abstract:This paper proposes a methodology to calculate both the first and second derivatives of a vector function of one variable in a single computation step. The method is based on the nested application of the dual number approach for first order derivatives. It has been implemented in Fortran language, a module which contains the dual version of elementary functions as well as more complex functions, which are common in the field of rotational kinematics. Since we have three quantities of interest, namely the function itself and its first and second derivative, our basic numerical entity has three elements. Then, for a given vector function $f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}^m$, its dual version will have the form $\tilde{f}:\mathbb{R}^3\to \mathbb{R}^{3m}$. As a study case, the proposed methodology is used to calculate the velocity and acceleration of a point moving on the coupler-point curve generated by a spherical four-bar mechanism.
