Abstract:On the basis of analysis of kinetic and thermodynamic processes of extremely high power CW exciplex pumped alkali vapor laser (XPAL), we establish a physical model to calculate and analyze 2-D and 3-D distributions of temperature as well as the intensity of laser beam in cavity with a different flowing velocity in the cell. Comparison between the simulated results of temperature distribution and laser characters of single-end and double-end scheme is drawn, demonstrating the advantages of double-end flow scheme, which actually means more homogeneous distributions of temperature and alkali atoms resulting in higher optical-optical efficiency. Enhancing pressure of argon to similar to 10 atm, with optimized pumped intensity of 2.54 x 10(5) W/cm(2) and optimized cavity length of 80 cm, we obtain more detailed simulated results of broadband pumped XPAL with four or five-level system.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers (FELs) are fourth-generation light sources that deliver extremely high intensity, ultrashort light pulses over a broad wavelength range from far-infrared to hard x ray. FELs based on the self-amplified spontaneous emission principle have been successfully operated with ultrahigh brightness and a broad wavelengths tuning range with good transverse coherence but poor temporal coherence. In contrast, the laser-seeded FELs have provided full coherence but at selected central wavelengths, usually the harmonics of the laser seeds, with relatively narrower tuning range. We report the experimental demonstration of a high-gain harmonic-generation (HGHG) FEL that is continuously tunable over a wide range using the combination of optical parametrical amplification, variable-gap undulator, and harmonic selection, where the temporal coherence is preserved as confirmed with the Michelson interferometry. In order to achieve higher photon energies, the first try of cascaded HGHG with a fresh-bunch technique is also made at the Shanghai Deep Ultraviolet Free-electron Laser test facility.

Abstract:By means of combining the transverse differential equation of pump intensity and the longitudinal differential equation of laser power, an optical model for transversely pumped diode-pumped alkali vapor lasers (DPALs) is established. The spatial distributions of both radius and intensities are considered in the model for pump and laser beams. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experiment ones as compared to the reported pulsed transversely pumped Cs DPALs. Influences of pump power, temperature, cell length, and beam waist on output performance are investigated, which suggests a set of parameters for efficient DPAL operation. In particular, the optimal ratio of the beam waist between the laser and pump beam is demonstrated to be 0.81, which can increase the laser power by 85% larger than the current experimental result.

Abstract:A hundred picosecond ultraviolet (UV) laser is demonstrated with a pulse duration of less than 200 ps and peak power of 0.6 GW. With a hundred picosecond stimulated Brillouin scattering compressed pulse as the fundamental light, the UV output at 355 nm is obtained by extra-cavity sum-frequency-mixing in two LiB3O5 crystals. Maximum UV energy was 100 mJ when the incident energy was 280 mJ, yielding an optical-to-optical efficiency of 35.7%. This result is of interest for the generation of high energy sub-nanosecond UV lasers which finds applications in shock ignition and industrial processing.

Abstract:The Exciplex Pumped Alkali Laser (XPAL) system, which is similar to DPAL (Diode Pumped Alkali vapor Laser), has been demonstrated in mixtures of Cs vapor, Ar, with and without ethane. Unlike DPAL, it uses the broadband absorption blue satellite of the alkali D-2 line, created by naturally occuring collision pairs. For example, Cs-Ar collision pairs have an absorption width which is as wide as the one of commercial semiconductor diode lasers. A continuous wave XPAL four-level theoretical model is presented in this paper. More factors are considered, such as the spectral dependence of pumped laser absorption for broadband pumping and the longitudinal population variation. Some intra-cavity details, such as longitudinal distributions of pumped laser and alkali laser, can also be solved well. The predictions of optical-to-optical efficiency as a function of temperature and pumped laser intensity are presented. The model predicts that there is an optimum value of temperature or pumped laser intensity. The analysis of the influence of cell length on optical-to-optical efficiency shows that a better performance can be achieved when using longer cell. The prediction of influence of Ar concentration and reflectivity of output coupler shows that higher optical-to-optical efficiency could be achieved if lower reflectivity of output coupler and higher Ar concentration are used. The optical-to-optical efficiency as high as 84% achieved by optimizing configuration with the pumped intensity of 5 x 10(7) W/cm(2) presented shows that broadband pumped four-level XPAL system has a potential of high optical-to-optical efficiency. Abstract:High-power, single-frequency lasers are important in the applications of coherent optical communication, Doppler wind lidar, and remote sensing. Here, a 10-kHz, 353-μJ, single-frequency, 574-ns, 1548-nm fiber laser system was demonstrated based on the optical pulse modulation. The 1548-nm, single-frequency seed laser with the linewidth of 1.25 kHz was modulated by two acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) into a 10-kHz pulsed laser. Two cascaded fiber amplifiers were spliced after the AOMs to scale up the pulse energy. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was inhibited by the multistage amplification construction and the optical bandpass filters. A customized pulse profile was proposed to pre-compensate the temporal modulation and inhibit the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect. The pulse duration of the amplified single-frequency pulse was 574 ns, with the peak power of 753 W. A numerical model was also built for investigating the dynamic of the interaction process inside the power amplifier. The simulated results indicate the maximum output power of the 10-kHz, customized single-frequency laser can be 3.984 W with a pulse duration of 381 ns.

Abstract:Passive ultrafast photoelectric devices based on the self-focusing effect have been deeply studied in ultrashort pulse formation, and great progress has been made in solid-state oscillators known as Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM). The intensity-dependent change of refractive index and the 1-2 fs electronic response time of materials are the basics of KLM. Recently, the advantages of fiber lasers such as compact structure, outstanding environmental stability, excellent heat dissipation potential, and low cost have stimulated great interest among researchers to explore stable and reliable fiber lasers. Based on the feasibility of KML in fiber lasers that have been reported, we demonstrate a high-stable self-mode-locking Er-doped fiber laser in this work. Diverse stable self-mode-locking pulses phenomena can be obtained through adjusting the polarization state of the cavity, including the output pulses with a fundamental frequency of 3.93 MHz, dark-bright soliton pulses, the 3rd harmonic operation, the 81st harmonic operation with the repetition rate of 318.4 MHz and the signal-to-noise ratio of 80 dB, and dual-wavelength output.

Abstract:We have demonstrated an intense plasma-based THz source using ~5 TW femtosecond laser pulses to irradiate solid targets. The energy of a single THz pulse emitted in the laser specular direction increases with the laser energy. The maximum THz energy can be as high as tens μJ/sr. The polarization of the THz pulse is measured to be linear.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-energy and high-power pulse laser on a xenon lamp-pumped Er:YAP crystal. The laser performance and thermal focal lengths under different working frequencies are discussed. The results show that the thermal lens effect is gradually aggravated with the increase of working frequencies, and even working at 100 Hz, a single pulse energy of 234 mJ can be achieved. A maximum average power of 41.5 W is achieved with a working frequency of 20 Hz and slope efficiency of 2.82%. This output power is much higher than other xenon lamp-pumped erbium laser devices. A Q-switched laser is demonstrated by using the TeO2 crystal, the maximum output energies of 11.5 mJ and 3.5 mJ are obtained at 50 and 100 Hz, the corresponding peak powers are 93.4 kW and 17.2 kW, respectively. The laser wavelengths and beam quality factors are also characterized in the free-running and Q-switched modes. A higher pulse energy and peak power laser could be achieved further by improving the damage threshold of TeO2 acousto-optical Q-switching. All the experimental results illustrate that the xenon lamp-pumped Er:YAP laser is a promising candidate for high-power and high-frequency mid-infrared laser devices.

Abstract:The demonstration of a 69.8 nm laser on 3p 3P2 - 3s 1P1 (J=2-1) transition of Ne-like Ar pumped by capillary discharge is reported in this Letter. A main current of 12 kA with rise time of 43 ns was chosen to generate the plasma in a 35 cm long capillary filling with pressure of Ar as low as 11 Pa, resulting in a gain coefficient of 0.34 cm(-1) and gain-length product of 11 at 69.8 nm. Also observed is a weak laser on 3p 3D2 - 3s 3P1 (J=2-1) transition of Ne-like Ar at 72.6 nm in the same condition. In addition, multiwavelength lasing at 46.9, 69.8, and 72.6 nm was simultaneously realized in a capillary discharge plasma column, conditioning the pressure of Ar to 13 Pa.

Abstract:A high pulse energy laser diode-pumped Nd:YAG master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser is demonstrated. The maximum energy of 68 mJ, 9.6 ns, 1064 nm laser at a pulse repetition frequency of 500 Hz is achieved by utilizing the amplifier composed of three LD side-pumped Nd:YAG modules. Moreover, the maximum laser energy of 35.6 mJ is obtained at 532 nm by employing a KTP crystal as a frequency doubler. When ambient temperature ranges from 5 C to 45 C, the master oscillator has a pulse energy jitter of < 5%. During the shake-environment test, the maximum-pulse-energy jitter of the MOPA laser is less than 2%. The developed MOPA laser has been used in a laser-induced fluorescence system and the variation of the flow field is obtained at a repetition rate of 500 Hz.

Abstract:We demonstrate the laser-driven post-acceleration experiment, utilizing a miniature slow-wave structure. Experiments on a terawatt laser system showed a significant increase in proton cutoff energy, highlighting the technique's potential, especially for high-power laser systems. The slow-wave structure consists of a helix and a shielded metallic shell covered on the outside. The transmission properties of electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) generated by laser–foil interactions along the structure are studied. Through an electromagnetic field perspective, we derived dispersion relations for helices with and without metallic shield. Our findings, supported by theory, simulations, and experiments, demonstrate the structure's ability to transmit high-frequency EMPs with limited dispersion.

Abstract:An exceptionally high gain coefficient has been obtained at 18.2 nm in a C VI recombination laser driven by a 2 ps, 20 J, Nd-glass laser operating by chirped pulse amplification. Carbon fiber targets of 7 \ensuremath{\mu}m diameter and up to 5 mm length were irradiated at $6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{15}\mathrm{W}\mathrm{}\mathrm{c}{m}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$. The time and space integrated gain coefficient on the 18.2 nm Balmer \ensuremath{\alpha} transition was measured to be $12.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Comparison with numerical modeling suggests that saturated laser action would be obtained with less than a factor of 2 increase in length.
