Abstract:With a sad feeling we had to learn that Prof. Bernard Witholt is not with us anymore. He passed away on Febru ary 28th in his 75th year after a short ill ness. Bernard grew up in Brasil as one of six children of Dutch parents. In 1959 they moved on to U.S.A., where he graduated at Amherst College and accomplished his doctoral thesis at Johns Hopkins University in Balti more, followed up by a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Cali fornia, San Diego. In 1972 he became Professor in Biochemistry at the Uni versity of Groningen, the Netherlands, where he developed novel bioreactors that were typically suitable for two phase fermentations with organic substrates having low water solubility. In Groningen, he became one of the driving forces of the Groningen Biotechnology Centre as well as the Science Park Groningen. One of the buildings on this park would later be named after him. He was rewarded with a substantial prize of the local newspaper, half of it to be spent on his research, and half of it for a goal of his own choice. Typical for Bernard Witholt, he chose to throw a great party for family and friends, enabling family members to fly in from the States and celebrate together. In 2007, a year after his retirement at the ETH, he was rewarded by Queen Beatrix with the title of Knight in the Order of the Netherlands’ Lion for his achievements in the field of biotechnology in Groningen and the Netherlands. It was also in Groningen where he described for the first time a hitherto unknown large class of carbon storage biopolyesters in bacteria, the medi umchainlength polyhydroxyalkano ates (mclPHAs). When the strain Pseudomonas oleovorans was grown on noctane as a second liquid phase under nitrogen limitation, it accumu lated inclusion bodies similar to the ones previously found by other groups. Amazingly, the identification of mclPHA was triggered by observa tions of freezefractured P. oleovorans using scanning electron micrographs (Fig. 1) [1]. Fractured inclusion bodies con sisting of mclPHA resulted in 3D structures like mushrooms and thus clearly differed from the needle type structure that was typical for short chainlength PHAs such as poly(3hy droxybutyrate) (PHB). Systematic analysis revealed that the new poly mer consisted to a large part of 3hy droxyoctanoates. Many PhD students in Groningen spent their days and nights with cultivating P. oleovorans, studying its growth performance in function of nutrient limitations but also identified and characterized the active enzymes for biosynthesis of mclPHA. In 1992, Bernard moved with his wife Renske Heddema and a large group of Dutch PhD students (Marcel Wubbolts, Jan van Beilen, Feike van der Leij, Wil Hazenberg, Marian Kraak, Maarten Nieboer, Qi Qu, Ivo Staijen) to Zurich, where he, together with Prof. Jay Bailey, suc ceeded Prof. Armin Fiechter in lead ing the Institute of Biotechnology at Bernard Witholt

Abstract:Editorial Super-resolution microscopy illuminated the hazy molecular world like a beacon, bringing significant changes to the fields of biology, optics and chemistry. Eric Betzig, who shared the 2014 Nobel Prize of Chemistry with Stefan Hell and William Moerner, is one of the inventors of this fantastic scientific tool. Working originally on near field optics, Dr. Betzig made a series of stunning achievements at Bell Labs before turning 35. Yet he quit, seemingly at the top of his game, to become a hands-on dad and joined the machinery business. Eventually, he missed science so much that he made a comeback and wowed everyone instantly with his work. He defies the conventional definition of “persistence” by demonstrating an alternative route to success. Plain-speaking and earnest, Dr. Betzig is sometimes honest to almost a fault, and always believes in doing practical things. He puts his heart and soul into everything he does, because he says he wants to truly live rather than simply pass through life. In science work, he is meticulous, yet he embraces risks and believes they can bring the best out of oneself. In life, he is a loving father who is always ready to take time from his busy research work to take his children to school or tennis lessons, and a caring teacher who never forgets to command the hard work of his postdocs. Abstract:ABSTRACT A memorial tribute detailing the life and scientific accomplishments of Frank A. L. Anet, a pioneer of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy who discovered bedrock principles in organic chemistry and magnetic resonance. He was the first to show that nuclear Overhauser effects could provide structural information, significantly impacting future NMR applications. In the 1960s and 1970s, he built entire multinuclear NMR spectrometers operating as high as 396 MHz for protons, detecting nuclei inaccessible to commercial instruments, and operating at very low temperatures for studying molecular structure and dynamics. A titan of physical organic chemistry, Frank made important contributions in the areas of conformational analysis, stereochemistry, isotope effects, NMR relaxation theory, and chemical origins of life.

Abstract:In early 1978, the American Museum of Natural History appointed Dr. John Van Couvering as Editor-in-Chief of Micropaleontology Press, a program that began as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in 1935 and had been housed at the Museum since 1942. For John, this was the beginning of a 38 year-commitment to the dissemination of knowledge on the microscopic shells of protists, through cataloguing and editing scientific journals. While John officially retired in 2016, he continued to volunteer his time and expertise until shortly before his passing on May 22, 2023.

Abstract:Electrochemistry intersected nanoscience 25 years ago when it became possible to control the flow of electrons through single molecules and nanostructures. Many surprises and a wealth of understanding were generated by these experiments. Professor Nongjian Tao was among the pioneering scientists who created the methods and technologies for advancing this new frontier. Achieving a deeper understanding of charge transport in molecules and low-dimensional materials was the first priority of his experiments, but he also succeeded in discovering applications in chemical sensing and biosensing for these novel nanoscopic systems. In parallel with this work, the investigation of a range of phenomena using novel optical microscopic methods was a passion of his and his students. This article is a review and an appreciation of some of his many contributions with a view to the future.

Abstract:This paper, on the occasion of the centennial of the award of the Nobel Prize to Rutherford, focuses on the simultaneous, but very different, achievements of Rutherford and Dutch physicist Kamerlingh-Onnes using atomic and bulk helium. One established the field of nuclear physics while the other the field of low-temperature physics and the discovery of superconductivity. The two are now inseparable in modern nuclear physics.
