Abstract:Boric acid, as an important boron compound, has been widely used in industrial production and cutting-edge technology. Massive wastewater containing boron were discharged during the industrial process. Adsorption technique is an efficient method for removal or recovery of boron from aqueous solutions as it has advantages of high boron recovery, renewable adsorbents and easy operation. The key to the adsorption process is the the selection of adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, acceptable mechanical strength and regeneration capability. In this review, we mainly review different kinds of boron-selective adsorbents reported in recent years and their adsorption performances. Boron adsorbents are catalogued by their functional groups. Among the reported adsorbents, the most widely used N-methyl-D-glucamine (NMDG) functionalized adsorbents are extensively demonstrated, and the adsorbents with structure of diols binding phenolic moiety are discussed. Moreover, other organic-inorganic hybrid adsorbents are introduced. This review may be helpful to the design of novel high-performance adsorbents for boron recovery or removal from aqueous solutions such as from salt lake brine and desalinize seawater.
A novel graphene oxide-microalgae hybrid material for the removal of pentavalent arsenic from natural water and industrial wastewater

Abstract:In this study, a hybrid bionanomaterial (GO@Di) composed of Dictyosphaerium sp. microalgae and graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized for the first time to be used as adsorbent for the removal of pentavalent arsenic (As(V)) from aqueous solutions. GO@Di was characterized by analytical techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), pH at point of zero charge (pHPCZ), and BET surface analysis. Solution pH, adsorbent mass, initial concentration of pollutant, and ionic strength were evaluated and optimized to identify the best conditions for As(V) removal using GO@Di. A removal efficiency of 69% and an adsorption capacity of 885 mg g-1 were obtained at the optimal conditions of pH 3, 1 mg of GO@Di and initial As(V) concentration of 50 mg L-1. The adsorption kinetics were also analyzed, reaching the equilibrium time at 120 min. The experimental kinetic results were correlated with the pseudo-second order model. Equilibrium data were fitted with the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) isotherm model. Regeneration studies indicated that GO@Di could be re-used efficiently up to 4 adsorption/desorption cycles. Finally, GO@Di was applied to real samples of natural waters and industrial effluents, obtaining removal percentages between 52 and 95%, which demonstrated the promising potential of GO@Di to depollute complex aqueous matrices containing As(V). Future studies will focus on the removal of other arsenical species using GO@Di and its implementaiton in dynamic adsorption systems.

Abstract:Porous graphene oxide (P-GO) was successfully synthesized by using a simple glucose mediated hydrothermal method form prepared graphene oxide (GO). Then the P-GO was characterized by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared (FITR), Raman, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis to determine the crystallinity, surface functionality, surface defect, surface area and porous nature of the material. For the comparative properties studies with P-GO, the synthesised GO was also characterised using the aforementioned analytical techniques. The formation of macroporous 2D sheet-like structure of P-GO with pore size diameters of 0.2–0.5 µm was confirmed by FESEM and TEM images. The surface area of P-GO was found to be 1272 m2/g which is much higher compare to GO (i.e., 172 m2/g) because of porous structure. P-GO was used for the adsorptive removal of F− ions from water using batch adsorption method. The highest adsorption occurs in the pH range of 5–7 with maximum adsorption capacity of 1272 mg/g. The experimental data revealed that the adsorption process obeys Langmuir monolayer isotherm model. The kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption procedure is extremely rapid and mainly fit to the Pseudo-second-order (PSO) model. The effect of co-existing ions on fluoride adsorption capacity by P-GO decreases in the following order: PO43− > CO32− > SO42− > HCO3− > NO3− > Cl−. The mechanism of adsorption of fluoride onto the P-GO surface includes electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:Preparation of a novel hybrid boron-selective adsorbent with N-methyl-D-glucamine functional groups was reported. The adsorbent was synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization method based on chemistry of sol-gel reaction. The structure and morphology of the hybrid adsorbent were characterized by MS, FTIR, XPS, BET analysis and PXRD, etc. The perfectly spherical hybrid adsorbent exhibits exceptionally efficient adsorption of boric acid from the aqueous solution. The boron adsorption behavior on the adsorbent was investigated by varying the dosages of the adsorbent, pH, and competitive ions. The adsorption isotherm was in better accordance with the Langmuir model, exhibiting a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 2.02 mmol/g. The adsorption capacity peaks at pH similar to 9 due to the vast formation of stable tetrahedral structure between dominant B(OH)(4)(-) and the adsorbent. The presence of Na+ ions has slight effect on boron adsorption while Mg2+ cations significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity because of the simultaneous adsorption attributed by Mg(OH)(2). Abstract:Abstract Graphene oxide (GO) is an attractive material for water treatment, although its high surface energy restricts its practical application. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a well-dispersed and interconnected, functionalized biopolymeric GO with magnetic activity, namely, cl–CS–p(MA)/Fe 3 O 4 NPs. This three-dimensional, sponge-like nanostructured material is composed of graphene oxide nanosheets dispersed in functionalized chitosan/poly(methacrylic acid) and is cross-linked with in situ-developed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Methacrylic acid (MA)-functionalized chitosan (CS) cross-linked with N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBA), designated as cl–CS–p(MA), facilitates the stable dispersion of GO nanosheets, providing a proper solid matrix for the generation of well-dispersed in situ Fe 3 O 4 NPs. The methodology allows for the generation of numerous binding sites with an interconnected morphology, facilitating the rapid uptake of a cationic dye in significant quantity, e.g., methylene blue (MB), which is used as a model water pollutant. In this work, the structural architecture of cl–CS–p(MA)/Fe 3 O 4 NPs was characterized with multiple approaches, and the adsorption mechanism was revealed to be an electrostatic interaction. The synthesized nanocomposite showed significant recyclability and structural stability. Adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 20 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 2478 mg/g for MB, surpassing the values reported for any other adsorbents to date.

Boron removal by a composite sorbent: Polyethylenimine/tannic acid derivative immobilized in alginate hydrogel beads

Abstract:A novel composite material was prepared by the grafting of tannic acid on polyethylenimine (PEI), which allows an efficient sorption of boron (sorption capacity close to 0.89 mmol B g-1). The encapsulation of this chelating sorbent (finely crushed) facilitates its use (readily solid/liquid separation, use in fixed-bed columns) at the expense of a loss in sorption capacity (proportionally decreased by the introduction of alginate having poor efficiency for boron uptake). Sorption isotherms are modeled using the Langmuir equation, while the kinetic profiles are presented a good fit by pseudo-second order rate equation. In addition, the encapsulating matrix introduces supplementary resistance to intraparticle diffusion, especially when the resin is dried without control: freeze-drying partially limits this effect. The stability (at long-term storage) of the sorbent is improved when the sorbent is stored under nitrogen atmosphere. The presence of an excess of NaCl was investigated. The degradation of the hydrogel (by ion-exchange of Ca(II) with Na(I)) leads to a decrease in the sorption performance of composite material but the action of Ca(II) ions in the solutions re-stabilizes the hydrogel.
Efficient Removal of Boron Acid by N-methyl-d-glucamine Functionalized Silica–polyallylamine Composites and Its Adsorption Mechanism

Abstract:A novel boron adsorbent was fabricated by grafting a boric acid chelating group, i.e., N-methyl-d-glucamine, onto the hydrophilic silica–polyallylamine composites (SPC). The boron adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and TGA method. The adsorption experiment indicated a maximum boron load capacity of ca. 1.55mmolg−1. The high load capacity was attributed to specific chemical affinity and physical adsorption. Highly effective removal of boric acid from aqueous solution was observed for the adsorbent even in the synthetic seawater containing high concentration of foreign ions. Analysis of adsorption thermodynamic and kinetics revealed a spontaneous sorption process that is driven by enthalpy change and limited by chemical reaction. The exhausted adsorbent was regenerated for repeated use by treating with 3% HCl solution, followed by neutralizing with 3% NH3·H2O at ambient temperature. Only 7% capacity loss was observed after five continuous adsorption–regeneration cycles.
Fabrication of 1-octane sulphonic acid modified nanoporous graphene with tuned hydrophilicity for decontamination of industrial wastewater from organic and inorganic contaminants

Abstract:This research work is based on the fabrication of a graphene oxide-based composite (GOBC) to remove the maximum number of contaminants from different industrial effluents. The GO was first intercalated with 1-octanesulphonic acid sodium salt and subjected to microwave irradiation to produce GOBC. Fixed-bed column tests and Jar-tests were performed for removal of the most harmful endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) such as bisphenol A, bisphenol S, endosulphan, beta-estradiol, dyes (methylene blue and violate) and toxic metal ions such as Pb2+, Li+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cr6+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu2+, and As5+via adsorption. The prepared material was thoroughly characterized for its unique functional and structural properties. The results obtained from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, water contact angle and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the successful preparation of GOBC using the proposed intercalation/microwave method. The water contact angle results showed decreased hydrophilicity of GOBC as compared to GO as the contact angle of GOBC (77.75°) was higher than that of GO (53.98°). The effects of main column parameters such as bed height, initial analyte concentration and solution flow rate were investigated. The results revealed that shorter breakthrough time, and high adsorption capacity were obtained at high flow rates of 1 mL min-1, while longer breakthrough time and lower adsorption capacity were obtained at lower flow rates of 0.5 mL min-1. The effect of bed depth on the breakthrough curve of analyte adsorption was a steep breakthrough curve; or a shorter breakthrough time occurring at lower bed height. The adsorption data obeyed the Yoon-Nelson and Thomas models very well. The adsorption capacity for BPA, BPS, endosulphan, beta-estradiol, methylene blue and violate was found to be 307, 305, 260, 290, 230 and 195 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption capacity of GOBC for toxic metal ions such as Pb2+, Li+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cr6+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu2+, and As5+ was found to be 156, 136, 126, 124, 118, 114, 82, 82, 72 and 72 mg g-1, respectively with excellent kinetics. The adsorption data obtained using Jar-tests revealed that GOBC obeys a Langmuir isotherm and a pseudo second order kinetics model. The analysis of industrial wastewater samples showed good removal efficiency of GOBC.

Abstract:Bio hybrid material supported multifunctional (hydroxyproline with enriched glycoprotein) has been shown to be efficient in chelation with boron and can be used for removal of boron at ppm levels. Gum arabic (GUM) is biodegradable and nontoxic biopolymer. GUM includes GA-GP-GA-glycoprotein and polysaccharides. Hollow silica spheres (HSS) gain increasing attention, thanks to low density, high speciﬁc surface and good adsorption performance. In this study, sol-gel process was used for the preparation of HSS and was modified with epoxy group. The resulted epoxidized HSS (HSEPC) was reacted with GUM to obtain a poly saccharide derivative functional hollow silica sphere (HSGUM) for removal of boron. Characterizations of HSGUM were performed by FT-IR and SEM techniques. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic models were also applied to adsorption of boron onto HSGUM. The resulting sorbent HSGUM has been demonstrated efficient and the maximum boron sorption capacity at monolayer coverage (qmax) was found as average 4.10 mmol g-1.

Abstract:Graphene oxide obtained from biomass possesses a rich variety of properties and applications. Sargassum, a macroalgae abundant in the Caribbean Sea, has been proposed as a viable and cost-effective biomass. Graphene oxide derived from Sargassum has an unprecedented selectivity for the Pb capture in the hydrocerussite phase. This study presents exhaustive theoretical and experimental efforts to understand the interaction between Pb-based molecules (Pb, Pb(CO3)3, and Pb(OH)2) with representative models of the functional groups present in graphene oxide (COOH, OOH, OH, and O). Our results demonstrate that CO3 enhances the Pb adsorption on the graphene oxide surface. Hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions between the CO3 of the Pb(CO3)3 with the GOs surface are the driving forces to improve the Pb capturing process and further hydrocerussite formation on GOs. Although Pb and Pb(OH)2 can also be trapped by graphene oxide, it is less probable from an energetic point of view. Here, we demonstrate that low-cost graphene oxide obtained from Sargassum can be key in environmental remediation.

Abstract:The present study was aimed at synthesis of polymeric hydrogels for controlled boron (B) release, as B deficiency is a major factor that decreases crops yield. Thus, graphene oxide incorporated guar gum and poly (ethylene glycol) hydrogels were prepared using the Solution Casting method for boron release. 3-Glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GLYMOL) was used as a cross-linker. Characterizations of hydrogels were carried out by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis and Scanning Electron scope. The FTIR outcomes confirmed the existence of functional groups, bindings and development of hydrogel frameworks from incorporated components. The quantity of GLYMOL directly increased the thermal stability and water retention but decreased the swelling %. The maximum swelling for the hydrogel formulations was observed at pH 7. The addition of GLYMOL changed the diffusion from quasi-Fickcian to non-Fickcian diffusion. The maximum swelling quantities of 3822% and 3342% were exhibited by GPP (control) and GPP-8 in distilled water, respectively. Boron release was determined in distilled water and sandy soil by azomethine-H test using UV-Visible spectrophotometer while 85.11% and 73.65% boron was released from BGPP-16, respectively. In short, water retentive, water holding capacities, swelling performances, biodegradability and swelling/deswelling features would offer an ideal platform for boron release in sustained agricultural applications.

Abstract:Polymeric resins are practically important adsorbents in a wide variety of applications, but they generally suffer from low surface areas and limited functionalized adsorption sites owing to their closely compacted and tangled polymeric chains. A metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite with enhanced adsorption capacity against the compacted polymeric resins was reported. The strategy to incorporate functionalized oligomer within the cavities of the MOF was demonstrated by the preparation of MIL-101(Cr) incorporated with N-methyl-d-glucamine-based organosiloxane polymer. The resulting MOF composite shows high efficiency for the removal of boric acid from water because of exceptionally high loading of functional groups responsible for the boron adsorption. This material offers promising perspectives for boron removal applications in seawater desalination.
Understanding the boron rejection of cation intercalated multilayered graphene oxide (GO) membrane in reverse osmosis (RO) process: A molecular dynamics study

Abstract:Cation-intercalated graphene oxide (GO) membrane has emerged as a promising candidate for desalination applications as reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. This study constructs GO membranes with different cations (K + or Mg 2+ ) and investigates the potential of these membranes in boron removal via nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations . In the aquatic environment, boron can exist in the form of boric acid or borate ion, depending on the pH of the solution. As a result, this study considers two forms of boron. This study reveals that the GO membranes effectively reject negatively charged borate ions due to their bigger hydration shell and stronger electrostatic repulsion with the membrane than neutral boric acid molecules. Moreover, K + ion intercalated GO membranes showed higher boron rejection than Mg 2+ ion intercalated GO membranes owing to weaker electrostatic attraction of K + ions with the boric acid (or borate ions). Additionally, a summary of the effects of oxygen-containing functional groups of the GO membrane on boron rejection is provided. Since the hydroxyl and epoxy functional groups interact with boric acid molecules more strongly, these molecules are prevented from permeating through the membrane. On the other hand, the permeation rate of borate ions declines because of their stronger interactions with the carboxyl functional groups. Furthermore, Mg 2+ ion intercalated GO membranes exhibited higher water permeance, excellent Na + rejection, and poor Cl − rejection compared to K + ion intercalated GO membranes.

Abstract:The widespread excess level of fluoride in water causes a possible risk to human health. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) and iron-type metal–organic frameworks namely iron-benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (Fe-BDC) supported material namely GO/Fe-BDC was employed to remove fluoride in water. Because of powder form, GO/Fe-BDC creates pressure drop during filtration. To overcome such troubles and improve fluoride adsorption capacity, GO/Fe-BDC integrated alginate (Alg) and chitosan (CS) biopolymer-based hybrid material namely GO/Fe-BDC/Alg-CS beads was developed for fluoride removal. Defluoridation properties of GO/Fe-BDC and GO/Fe-BDC/Alg-CS beads were evaluated under numerous influencing conditions namely pH, contact time, variable fluoride concentration, co-ions, dosage and temperature studies. The GO/Fe-BDC and GO/Fe-BDC/Alg-CS beads were revealed finer fluoride adsorption ability and also had high fluoride selectivity in complexed atmosphere with several co-ions. The element composition, crystalline nature and material morphology of GO/Fe-BDC and GO/Fe-BDC/Alg-CS beads were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR and EDAX analysis. The order and nature of defluoridation was examined with kinetics, thermodynamic and isotherm analysis. The highest r values and lowest sd values exhibit that Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order (PSO) models were consider as best fit models for fluoride adsorption process onto GO/Fe-BDC and GO/Fe-BDC/Alg-CS beads. The thermodynamic results illustrate that fluoride adsorption was spontaneous, chemical adsorption with endothermic nature . Electrostatic interaction and complexation were found as the primary defluoridation mechanism of GO/Fe-BDC and GO/Fe-BDC/Alg-CS beads. The renewal and field investigations of GO/Fe-BDC and GO/Fe-BDC/Alg-CS beads were explored to check their regeneration ability and field suitability nature.

Abstract:The development of high-performance adsorbents to address high concentrations of boron and thus acquirement of drinkable water from seawater is a huge challenge. Most of the boron removal adsorbents reported in the literature have complex and organic solvents involved in preparation processes, which makes industrial production difficult. Herein, the porous cross-linked polyglycidyl methacrylate (CLPGMA) with a rich pore structure is prepared in one step by water-in-oil high internal phase emulsification, and then functionalized using water as a solvent to dissolve glucosamine to obtain the boron removal adsorbent. The whole preparation process is facile and free-organic solvents, making it suitable for further industrial production. The adsorbent demonstrates excellent performance in batch adsorption. Especially, we propose to combine the adsorption with reverse osmosis technology, by which the drinkable desalinated seawater can be obtained. The column adsorption experiments show that the adsorbent can rapidly remove boron from desalinated seawater at high flow rates under dynamic conditions to meet drinking water standards. This research provides a new method for the green large-scale synthesis of high-performance boron adsorbent for seawater desalination.

Abstract:A novel cellulose-based microsphere containing glucamine groups, referred as CVN, was successfully synthesized by radiation-induced graft polymerization of 4-vinylbenzyl chloride onto cellulose microspheres and subsequent functionalization with N-methyl-d-glucamine. The adsorption by CVN for boron (III) from aqueous solutions was evaluated systematically by batch adsorption technique. Langmuir models could fit well with the adsorption behavior of CVN. The CVN adsorbents exhibited a high adsorption capacity up to 12.4mgg-1 towards boron (III) over the wide pH range of 5-8. After the addition of chloride salts, the boron uptake of CVN was enhanced that was attributed to the compensation of the surface charge generated by boron (III) adsorption leading to favor the adsorption. At high concentrations of salts, the ionic strength and different salts have no effect on the adsorption of boron(III). This work provides a new sustainable, cost effective material as a promising specific adsorbent for the removal of boron (III) from saline solutions.

Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures

Abstract:The present work is aimed at developing an effective graphene-based sorbent for liquid-phase sorption of organic pollutants from aquatic media. The material synthesized in accordance with the method proposed represents a nanostructured composite possessing the hydrogel properties: structured three-dimensional carbon framework surface-modified with iron nanoparticles ( i.e., graphene oxide (GO)/Fe-H 2 O). Moreover, the proportion of dry matter in the hydrogel was revealed by drying to a constant weight at a given temperature (110 °C), and the powdery form (GO/Fe-110) of the composite was obtained. Besides, the aerogel (GO/Fe-250) of the composite developed was formed, for which the hydrogel synthesized was subjected to hydrothermal drying in isopropanol for 6 h under supercritical conditions. The morphological, structural and porous characteristics of all these materials were determined. The sorption capacity of the nanocomposites was estimated for the removal (under dynamic conditions) of the synthetic organic dye, methylene blue, used as a target pollutant. The results of the studies showed that the maximum sorption capacity of the GO/Fe-H 2 O, GO/Fe-110 and GO/Fe-250 are ∼2500, ∼1500 and ∼2300 mg g −1 , respectively. Besides, the high rate of the target pollutant removal from the aquatic media is a distinctive feature of the composites developed herein.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have been extensively reported for nanofiltration in water system, but their applications in organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) are rarely studied. The instability of GO membranes in solvents seriously impedes their practical applications. Thus, it is highly desirable to fabricate GO membranes with excellent stabilities for OSN. Herein, we report GO membranes crosslinked with boronic acid polymer (BA) for this purpose. These membranes exhibited strong tolerance to various organic solvents, favorable stability and OSN performances. The rejection for acid fuchsin (AF) methanol solution of the GO membrane (mass loading = 44 mg m(-2)) was increased by 20.7% upon addition of 0.5 BA polymer molecules (weight ratio of BA to GO). The optimized membrane maintained high rejection (95.8%) for AF methanol solution with a slight compromise in methanol permeance even after being soaked in water for one month. Moreover, the composite membrane exhibited high rejections for both EB and AF in harsh DMF solvent. As a demonstration, it showed high rejection for vitamin B12 (VB12) of 99.0% with a methanol permeance of 3.94 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1).

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is a competitive candidate used for adsorption of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) from water. To overcome GO's spontaneous aggregation tendency in adsorption and to ease contaminant desorption from the adsorbent for adsorbent regeneration, a modified GO (P-GO), with temperature-switchable hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, obtained by grafting temperature-responsive poly( N- n-propylacrylamide) was proposed. Two model EOCs, norfloxacin (NOR) and bisphenol A (BPA), with distinct hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity were employed. P-GO showed significant temperature-responsive adsorption behaviors: P-GO was more hydrophilic at a lower temperature and was beneficial for the adsorption of hydrophilic NOR, whereas it turned more hydrophobic at a higher temperature and was preferred for the adsorption of hydrophobic BPA. Compared with GO, P-GO under corresponding optimal conditions had comparable large adsorption amounts for NOR because of an "adsorption site replacement" strategy and notably enhanced adsorption for BPA because of strengthened hydrophobic association. Main interfacial binding interactions were π-π electron donor-acceptor effect and H-bonding for NOR adsorption and hydrophobic association and H-bonding for BPA uptake. On the basis of the temperature-responsive adsorption behaviors and studied interfacial interactions, regeneration of the adsorbent at designed temperatures using water (without additional chemicals) as an eluent is realized. This achievement is important for reducing risks of secondary environmental pollution during regeneration and easing further recovery of organic contaminants if needed.

Abstract:This study aimed to utilize synthesized graphene oxide (GO) for adsorptive removal of cobalt ions and investigate the adsorption mechanism using advanced techniques such as X-ray absorption spectra (XAFS). The GO was synthesized via an improved Hummers method, resulting in high surface area (93.7 m2/g) and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Various characterizations, including SEM, TEM, Raman, FT-IR, TG, potentiometric titrations, and N2 sorption–desorption measurements, were employed to characterize the GO. The adsorption behavior of GO towards Co2+ was investigated, and the results showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model, with a maximum sorption capacity of 93.7 mg/g. The adsorption process was chemisorption and endothermic, with GO showing adsorption selectivity order of Co2+ > Sr2+ > Cs+. Based on various characterizations such as X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), FT-IR, and XPS, the sorption mechanism of Co2+ onto GO was discussed, with the results indicating that coordination and electrostatic interaction were the primary adsorption mechanisms, with oxygen-containing functional groups playing a vital role. The first coordinating atom for Co2+ was O, and the coordination environment was similar to that of cobalt acetate and CoO. Overall, this study provides comprehensive understanding of the adsorption behavior and mechanism of Co2+ onto GO, highlighting its potential as an effective adsorbent for removing nuclides from aqueous solution.
