Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are widely used in the field of analysis and detection due to their excellent optical properties. At present, many studies have focused on the preparation of multi-color fluorescent quantum dots by simple methods. Inspired by this, carbon quantum dots with green (G-CQDs) and yellow fluorescence (YN-CQDs) emission were prepared by hydrothermal method using PTCDA and urea as precursors. After characterizing their morphology, structure, and optical properties, fluorescent probes for different purposes were constructed according to their different fluorescence characteristics. Since green G-CQDs are sensitive to acidic environments, pH detection kits are developed. In addition, G-CQDs can also efficiently detect Asp. YN-CQDs are used to detect metal ions and can specifically detect Fe 3+ . Both of them were applied to the detection of actual samples, showing high efficiency and reliability. It provides a new idea for the multi-purpose detection of carbon quantum dot fluorescent probes.

Abstract:A new fluorescent sensor for the determination of lemon yellow was developed based on nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), which were prepared via a hydrothermal method with dried pomelo peel and L-tyrosine. The N-CQDs exhibited the blue fluorescence with a quantum yield of 28 %. The sensing principle of N-CQDs was quenched by lemon yellow via static quenching. The potential interfering substances showed no influence on the detection of lemon yellow. The limit of detection was 0.023 mg/L and lower than that of national standard. Furthermore, the synthesized N-CQDs have been successfully applied to the measurement of lemon yellow in real samples. Hence, the N-CQDs would be a promising sensor in food analysis.

Abstract:Highly blue fluorescence carbon dots were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal treatment of potatoes. The as-obtained C-dots have been applied to bioimaging of HeLa cells, which shows their excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. The results reveal that C-dots are promising for real cell imaging applications. In addition, the carbon dots can be utilized as a probe for sensing phosphate. Abstract:This study reports the successful preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with a quantum yield of 15 % utilizing the hydrothermal method. Citric acid was employed as the carbon source, while 1,3-Diamino-2-propanol was utilized as the dopant. It was discovered that the emission of synthesized N-CQDs was dependent on concentration and excitation. By altering the N-CQDs concentration, the fluorescence emission peak was shifted from 453 to 574 nm, causing the emission to transition from blue to orange. The presence of multiple fluorescence emission centers within N-CQDs was confirmed through two-dimensional fluorescence matrix scanning. As the concentration of N-CQDs increased, the distance between these centers decreased, ultimately leading to aggregation. The energy or electrons were transferred as a result of the surface functional groups' interaction, which ultimately causes the fluorescence emission peak to shift to the red. Furthermore, an increase in concentration results in the formation of larger aggregates and larger sp 2 carbon domains, ultimately resulting in longer wavelengths. Because of the convenience of use, high sensitivity, and rapid response of the fluorescent probe detection approach, multi-color N-CQDs with tunable concentration were used for the identification of Fe 3+ , with a 10–200 μM linear detection range and limits of detection (LOD) of 0.56 μM.

Abstract:Fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were synthesized by a one-step pyrolysis strategy using casein as carbon, nitrogen and sulfur sources, and characterized by UVevis spectrum, fluorescent spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FT-IR, etc. The synthesized NSCDs displayed a blue emission under ultraviolet illumination with a quantum yield of 31.8%, and a good aqueous solubility, photostability and biocompatibility. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of NSCDs could be selectively quenched by Hg2+, so NSCDs was used as an effective probe for the detection of Hg2+. The linear range and the limit of detection (LOD) of the fluorescent sensor based on NSCDs for the detection of Hg2+ were 0.01-0.25 mu M and 6.5 mu M, respectively. Spiked water samples were detected by the sensor with the recovery of 95.4-106.3% and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.6-8.6%. It was also observed that the quenched NSCDs-Hg2+ system could be restored by the addition of biothiols such as L-cysteine (Lcy), homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH), thus NSCDs-Hg2+ system was employed as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of biothiols. The linear range and LOD of the NSCDs-Hg2+ system were 1-10 mM and 23.6 nM for Lcy, 0.2-2.5 mM and 12.3 nM for Hcy, and 0.1-2.0 mM and 16.8 nM for GSH, respectively. The NSCDs-Hg2+ system was applied for the detection of biothiols in serum samples with satisfied results. In addition, the study in vitro imaging HeLa cells revealed that the synthesized NSCDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in cellular imaging without noticeable cytotoxicity. Abstract:Herein, N, S co-doped carbon quantum dots (N, S-CDs) with high absolute quantitative yield (Abs-QY) of 50.2% were produced by hydrothermal treatment of food residue crayfish shells. A new detection method of thiamphenicol (TAP) and its analogues was established by discovering the obvious fluorescence response between TAP and N, S-CDs, which achieved a wide linear range of 20–300 μg·L−1 with a detection limit (LOD) of 11.12 μg·L−1. This novel probe exhibited strong sensitivity and shows rapid response in complex food matrices (overall detection time is less than 45 min) mainly induced by static quenching. Spiked food sample recovery ranged from 97.3 to 99.34%. Further, the cell experiments of N, S-CDs were conducted, and the cell viability remained 91.76% under high concentration of N, S-CDs due to the environmentally friendly materials. The low cytotoxicity and good cytocompatibility make these N, S-CDs compatible for cell bioimaging and intracellular detection of TAP.

Abstract:In this work, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) were synthesized by an efficient one-step hydrothermal using hydrated citric acid and urea as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The fluorescent quantum yield of the N-GQDs was up to 88.20 %, and the fluorescence lifetime was 12.29 ns. Based on the excellent fluorescence property, water-soluble and low cytotoxicity of N-GQDs, a novel fluorescent probe was fabricated and used for simultaneous detection of l-glutamic acid (l-Glu) and l-aspartic acid (l-Asp). Herein, Al3+ was used as a chelant agent for l-Glu shielding. The sensitive response of the probe towards l-Glu and l-Asp presented a wide concentration range with a low detection limit (S/N = 3). The fluorescent probe showed good selectivity, high stability and acceptable reproducibility in the application of l-Glu/l-Asp simultaneous detection in chicken soup. Meanwhile, the detection results of the fluorescent probe were correlated well with those obtained by amino acid analyzer.

Abstract:Quinoline yellow (QY), as a food coloring agent, will consume a large number of detoxifying substances in the body after being ingested by the human body, interfering with the normal metabolic functions of the human body, and may cause allergies, diarrhea and other symptoms, as well as a certain degree of carcinogenicity, posing a great threat to human health. As a result, it is critical to develop a fast, sensitive, and effective approach to determining quinoline yellow in food. In this study, carbon dots (N-CQDs) with high fluorescence quantum yield were prepared and used to determine the QY content using the dual mode of internal filtering effect and fluorescence emission shift detection. Both methods showed good linearity in the range of QY concentration of 0.3-3.2 μM, and the detection limits were classified as 2.6 nM and 0.18 μM. In addition, in order to achieve visual detection of QY, fluorescent test strips were constructed using the carbon dots and non-fluorescent qualitative filter paper to make the detection of QY more convenient. This probe presents a novel way for detecting quinoline yellow in food analysis.

Abstract:Carbon dots have been popular luminescent materials because of their excellent fluorescence properties, but the low quantum yield limits their application. Heteroatom doping is a more convenient and popular approach to increase the quantum yield of carbon dots. Here, a novel N,S,P heteroatom co-doped carbon dots (N,S,P-CDs) was synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method using m-phenylenediamine, L-cysteine and phosphoric acid as raw materials. The as-prepared N,S,P-CDs showed excellent photoluminescence properties with fluorescence quantum yield up to 41%, which greatly encourages their application in fluorescence sensing. The N,S,P-CDs exhibited good fluorescence stability under salt solution, xenon lamp irradiation and ultraviolet lamp irradiation except for high sensitivity to extreme acidity. The fluorescence intensity of N,S,P-CDs can be decreased as high as 85% when pH of the solution changes from 2.50-4.75, that is, small fluctuation in pH can cause an intense response of the fluorescence of N,S,P-CDs. Therefore, an excellent fluorescence sensing platform for accurate monitoring pH of extreme acidity is constructed. In addition, the N,S,P-CDs can be applied for quantitative detection of folic acid based on the strong quenching effect of folic acid on the fluorescence of the N,S,P-CDs. A good linearity is obtained in the concentration range of 4.85-82.45 μM, with the detection limit of 0.148 μM. The constructed sensing platform was used for the determination of folic acid in the actual sample of range juice, oatmeal and tablets with satisfactory results.

Abstract:In this paper, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) are synthesized by the hydrothermal method. N-CQDs exhibit strong fluorescence, and N-CQDs are well dispersed in water as well as in various organic solvents. N-CQDs emit multi-color fluorescence from blue to red, with wavelengths in the range of 450-650 nm without the need for purification. Furthermore, the fluorescence emission of N-CQDs was selectively quenched after adding Fe3+ ions. N-CQDs were used as a nanoprobe for the detection of Fe3+ ions, showing a good linear correlation between the fluorescence emission and the concentration of Fe3+ in the Fe3+ concentration range from 0 to 100 μM. The limit of detection (LOD) was 55.7 μM for Fe3+ in water and 40.2 μM in fetal bovine serum (FBS) samples. The study shows that the synthesized N-CQDs have low cost and great potential for application in biological analysis.

Abstract:The Red-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) are synthesized using o-phenylenediamine by a one-step method, and can serve as a fluorescent probe for “turn off” detection of hematin in human red cells. The red-emitting N-CDs can be obtained only in acidic conditions and the emission of the red-emitting N-CDs is pH-dependent, indicating proton-controlled synthesis and emission. The red-emitting N-CDs are 2.7 nm in mean size and have a uniform dispersion and exhibit a high quantum yield (12.8%) and great optical properties. The developed sensing system for hematin displays a linear response from 0.4 to 32 μM with a detection limit of 0.18 μM. Importantly, this fluorescent probe demonstrates a good potential practicability for the quantitative detection of hematin in complex matrixes. Graphical abstract ᅟ

Abstract:The nitrogen-doped carbon dots ( N -CDs) with multicolor emission (green, yellow, and red) were fabricated with naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride as carbon precursor, and different alkylamines as passive agents. The structures of the as-prepared carbon dots were confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra , transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectra, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The characterized results and UV–vis absorption spectrum demonstrated that the luminescence variations of different CDs were probably attributed to the difference of N -related states, oxygen-containing groups, and oxidation degree in the CDs structure. Moreover, the green emitting CDs (G-CDs) could be utilized as fluorescent probe for ascorbic acid (AA) detection with detection limit (LOD) of 5 μM. The yellow emitting CDs (Y-CDs) could be used to detect glutathione (GSH) in the range of 1–70 μM with LOD of 0.07 μM. The red emitting CDs (R-CDs) could detect the water content in THF , DMF, acetone, and EtOH with LODs of 0.44%, 0.31%, 0.55% and 0.55%, respectively. Remarkably, G-CDs and Y-CDs can distinguish AA and GSH respectively with high selectivity and accuracy. Finally, the fluorescent probes based on G-CDs and Y-CDs were successfully applied for the AA and GSH determination in vitamin C tablet, grapefruit juice, and GSH whitening serum samples with high reliability and feasibility, which provided the guidance for the selection of AA and GSH supplements.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots surface doped with nitrogen (N-CQDs) were synthesized with quantum yield (24.9–66.4%) via an easy hydrothermal route while using citric acid as a precursor for carbon and varying concentrations of DL-Alaninol as the dopant. The as-prepared N-CQDs with adjustable fluorescence emission transformed from weak excitation-dependent to excitation-dependent and then to excitation-independent. After a detailed characterization and investigation, the N-CQDs were found to have a uniform particle size (1.76–3.07 nm) and good monodispersion. They were bearing similar functional groups on their surfaces but with different contents. The N/C ratio of N-CQDs increased gradually with the increasing contents of dopant, while the O/C ratio gradually decreased. The photoluminescence (PL) of (N-CQDs) has been explained by a proposed PL mechanism that involved quantum size effect and the energy levels by the surface state. When further investigated as a fluorescent probe for Fe3+ ion detection, the synthesized N-CQDs were found to be selectively and sensitively detecting Fe3+ ions. The N-CQD-based fluorescent probe was capable of detecting in a wider linear detection range and lower limits of detection (LODs).

Abstract:CD-based ratiometric fluorescence probes are of great significance for visual detection, but accomplishing this goal is still a particularly challenging task. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) with bright yellow fluorescence were easily manufactured via a one-pot hydrothermal method for visual detection of hypochlorite (ClO − ) and thiosulfate (S 2 O 3 2− ) under UV light irradiation. The as-prepared NCDs demonstrate favorable water solubility, excellent biocompatibility, superior optical properties and low cytotoxicity. Strikingly, the fluorescence of the NCDs could be quenched with ClO − . Based on these results, an original fluorescent nanoprobe was constructed for the highly discriminating recognition of ClO − by oxidation of the amino groups on their surface to nitro groups. The assay covered the ranges from 0.067 to 19.33 μM and 24 to 98 μM with a limit of detection (S/N = 3) of as low as 0.013 μM. Remarkably, a growing peak appears at 537 nm and the emission at 492 nm shrinks with the introduction of S 2 O 3 2− , which demonstrates ratiometric fluorescence emission characteristics ( F 537nm / F 492nm ) in the range of 6.6–100 μM with a limit of detection (S/N = 3) of as low as 0.78 μM. In addition, the fluorescence color of the NCDs also changes (yellow-green-blue) after adding various ClO − concentrations. The fluorescence color of the NCDs–ClO − also changes (blue-green-yellow) after adding various S 2 O 3 2− concentrations. This excellent ratiometric fluorescence probe was successfully further used for nuclear imaging. Accordingly, an easy-to-prepare paper-based sensor to identify ClO − and S 2 O 3 2− was fabricated, which demonstrated their adaptability for in situ on-site testing. This research further opens up new opportunities for the development of efficient yellow fluorescent probes based on NCDs nanomaterials for visual detection, biomarking, and biomedical optical imaging.

Fluorescent probes based on N-CQDs: For direct detection of food additives STPP and Al3

Abstract:Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), as one of the many food additives, can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and a variety of adverse reactions when ingested by the human body, which is a great potential threat to human health. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a fast, sensitive and simple method to detect STPP in food. In this study, we synthesized a kind of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and were surprised to find that the addition of STPP led to the gradual enhancement of the emission peaks of the N-CQDs, with a good linearity in the range of 0.067-1.96 μM and a low detection limit as low as 0.024 μM. Up to now, there is no report on the use of carbon quantum dots for the direct detection of STPP. Meanwhile, we found that the addition of Al3+ effectively bursts the fluorescence intensity of N-CQDs@STPP solution and has a good linear relationship in the range of 0.33-6.25 μM with a lower detection limit of 0.24 μM. To this end, we developed a fluorescent probe to detect STPP and Al3+. In addition, the probe was successfully applied to the detection of bread samples, which has great potential for practical application.

Abstract:As novel fluorescent nanomaterials, carbon dots have attracted increasing research attention because of their simple synthesis, robust fluorescence, low toxicity, and easy functionalisation. Previous research was focused on preparing carbon dots from biomass and chemical materials; however, most of these carbon dots exhibited blue fluorescence. Moreover, the fluorescence quantum yield was generally low, significantly limiting their application in biological imaging. To broaden the application scope of carbon dots, this study prepared long-wavelength emitting nano-carbon dots that exhibited increased quantum yield. Novel N-doped yellow fluorescent nano-carbon dots (Y-CDs) were synthesised via a hydrothermal method using L-tartaric acid and urea as the precursors. The Y-CDs had a high quantum yield (15.9%) and demonstrated photostability at various pHs, temperatures, and ionic strengths. The Y-CDs could detect cobalamin effectively and selectively, showing a linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and cobalamin concentration. The related coefficient was 0.997, and the detection limit was 2.101 μmol/L. In addition, the Y-CDs were successfully used as an imaging probe for MDA-MB-231 cells. Therefore, the Y-CDs developed in this study can be used for cobalamin detection and cell imaging.

Abstract:A new turn-on fluorescent probe for the selective detection of thiol over other amino acids was synthesized. Probe possesses the widely-used thiol-selective 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl (DNBS) group which can react with thiol and release the fluorescein which has strong fluorescence. Fluorescein, a well known xanthene fluorescent dye, has two states at different environment. Fluorescein is in the state of spirocyclization when connected with 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl (DNBS) group which has no fluorescence. However, it is in the state of open form when it reacts with thiol which has a strong fluorescence. The transition of the two states can be used to selectively detect thiol and the color can change from colorless to yellow which can be differentiated by naked eyes. Upon the titration of thiol, the absorption band at 454nm rises gradually and the fluorescence emerges at 521nm and the detection limit can be as low as 0.16μM. All of such good properties prove it to be a good sensor for the selective detection of thiol and it shows a potential use in bioimaging applications.
