Abstract:A positive relationship between running economy and maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) has been postulated in trained athletes, but previous evidence is equivocal and could have been confounded by statistical artefacts. Whether this relationship is preserved in response to running training (changes in running economy and V̇O2max) has yet to be explored. This study examined the relationships of (i) running economy and V̇O2max between runners, and (ii) the changes in running economy and V̇O2max that occur within runners in response to habitual training. 168 trained distance runners (males, n = 98, V̇O2max 73.0 ± 6.3 mL∙kg-1∙min-1; females, n = 70, V̇O2max 65.2 ± 5.9 mL kg-1∙min-1) performed a discontinuous submaximal running test to determine running economy (kcal∙km-1). A continuous incremental treadmill running test to volitional exhaustion was used to determine V̇O2max 54 participants (males, n = 27; females, n = 27) also completed at least one follow up assessment. Partial correlation analysis revealed small positive relationships between running economy and V̇O2max (males r = 0.26, females r = 0.25; P<0.006), in addition to moderate positive relationships between the changes in running economy and V̇O2max in response to habitual training (r = 0.35; P<0.001). In conclusion, the current investigation demonstrates that only a small to moderate relationship exists between running economy and V̇O2max in highly trained distance runners. With >85% of the variance in these parameters unexplained by this relationship, these findings reaffirm that running economy and V̇O2max are primarily determined independently.

Body-mass-modified running economy and step length in elite male middle- and long-distance runners

Abstract:To minimize the influence of body mass on oxygen uptake (VO2) during running, submaximal and maximal VO2 should preferentially be expressed as ml.kg-0.75.min-1. In this study, the levels of such body-mass-modified running economy were investigated at different velocities in elite runners and related to step lengths and anthropometric measures. Twenty-six Swedish National Team middle- and long-distance runners performed submaximal (4 velocities) and maximal treadmill tests. In 17 runners repeated (2-4) tests were performed within 6 months. The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max; 214 vs 202 ml.kg-0.75.min-1) and running velocity at 4 mmol.l-1 blood lactate were higher in the long- (n = 12) than in the middle-distance group (n = 14). The oxygen uptake at 15 km.h-1 (VO2 15) was lower (129 vs 138 ml.kg-0.75.min-1, p < 0.01) and the VO2/velocity slope higher in the long-distance runners, with similar VO2 18 in the two groups. Step lengths at 18 (168 vs 173 cm) and 15 km.h-1 did not differ significantly between the groups, but the increase in step length per km.h-1 velocity raise was greater in the middle-distance runners. Step lengths at these velocities were positively related to body mass and stature, negatively to relative leg length. Stature and leg length were greater in runners displaying low VO2 15, whereas no corresponding difference was seen for VO2 18. The figures for running economy at 15 and 18 km.h-1 were poorly related to the concomitantly determined step lengths at the respective velocities.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Gait-cycle characteristics and running economy in elite Eritrean and European runners

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether biomechanical characteristics such as ground-contact time, swing time, and stride length and frequency contribute to the exceptional running economy of East African runners. Methods: Seventeen elite long-distance runners (9 Eritrean, 8 European) performed an incremental maximal running test and 3 submaximal running bouts at 17, 19, and 21 km/h. During the tests, gas-exchange parameters were measured to determine maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and running economy (RE). In addition, ground-contact time, swing time, stride length, and stride frequency were measured. Results: The European runners had higher VO2max values than the Eritrean runners (77.2 ± 5.2 vs 73.5 ± 6.0 mL · kg-1 · min-1, P = .011, effect sizes [ES] = 0.65), although Eritrean runners were more economical at 19 km/h (191.4 ± 10.4 vs 205.9 ± 13.3 mL · kg-1 · min-1, P = .026, ES = 1.21). There were no differences between groups for ground-contact time, swing time, stride length, or stride frequency at any speed. Swing time was associated with running economy at 21 km/h in the Eritrean runners (r = .71, P = .033), but no other significant association was found between RE and biomechanical variables. Finally, best 10-km performance was significantly correlated with RE (r = -.57; P = .013). Conclusions: Eritrean runners have superior RE compared with elite European runners. This appears to offset their inferior VO2max. However, the current data suggest that their better RE does not have a biomechanical basis. Other factors, not measured in the current study, may contribute to this RE advantage.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction Running economy (RE) deteriorates during prolonged running, although the effect of measuring energy cost (EC) or oxygen cost (OC) on the magnitude of these changes has not been investigated. Similarly, it is unknown if runners’ performance level may influence the deterioration of RE during prolonged running. The aims of this study were to compare changes in EC and OC measurements of RE during a prolonged run in a large cohort of well-trained male runners, and to compare changes between runners of high and low performance standard. Methods Forty-four male runners (maximal oxygen uptake ( V̇ O 2 max) 62.4 ml·kg -1 ·min -1 ; 10 km time 35:50 ± 4:40 mm:ss) completed an incremental test determining lactate threshold 1 (LT1) and V̇ O 2 max, and on a separate occasion, a 90 min run at LT1. Respiratory gases were collected at 15 min intervals. Subsequently, sub-groups of high- (HP, 10 km 31:20 ± 01:00 mm:ss) and low-performing (LP, 10 km 41:50 ± 01:20 mm:ss) runners were compared. Results RE deterioration was only fractionally larger when expressed as OC than EC (0.1% greater from 30-90 min; p < 0.001), perhaps due to the small change in RER (-0.01) in this study. For the HP group increases were lower than LP after 90 min in both EC (+2.3 vs +4.3%; p < 0.01) and OC (+2.4 vs +4.5%; p < 0.01). Similarly, at standardized distances, changes were lower for HP vs LP e.g. at 16.7 km +1.0 vs +3.2% for EC (p < 0.01), and + 1.2 vs +3.4% for OC (p < 0.001). Conclusions The deterioration of RE was dependent on athlete’s performance level, with HP runners displaying superior RE durability. The use of EC or OC had only a fractional influence on RE durability, although this may gain importance with larger shifts in substrate metabolism.

Adaptive Human Behavior and Physiology

Abstract:Abstract Objective A suite of adaptations facilitating endurance running (ER) evolved within the hominin lineage. This may have improved our ability to reach scavenging sites before competitors, or to hunt prey over long distances. Running economy (RE) is a key determinant of endurance running performance, and depends largely on the magnitude of force required to support body mass. However, numerous environmental factors influence body mass, thereby significantly affecting RE. This study tested the hypothesis that alternative metabolic strategies may have emerged to enable ER in individuals with larger body mass and poor RE. Methods A cohort of male (n = 25) and female (n = 19) ultra-endurance runners completed submaximal and exhaustive treadmill protocols to determine RE, and V̇O 2Max . Results Body mass was positively associated with sub-maximal oxygen consumption at both LT1 (male r =0.66, p <0.001; female LT1 r =0.23, p= 0.177) and LT2 (male r =0.59, p =0.001; female r =0.23, p =0.183) and also with V̇O 2Max (male r =0.60, p =0.001; female r =0.41, p =0.046). Additionally, sub-maximal oxygen consumption varied positively with V̇O 2Max in both male (LT1 r =0.54, p =0.003; LT2 r =0.77, p <0.001) and female athletes (LT1 r =0.88, p <0.001; LT2 r =0.92, p <0.001). Conclusions The results suggest that, while individuals with low mass and good RE can glide economically as they run, larger individuals can compensate for the negative effects their mass has on RE by increasing their capacity to consume oxygen. The elevated energy expenditure of this low-economy high-energy turnover approach to ER may bring costs associated with energy diversion away from other physiological processes, however.
Running Economy Changes Alter Predicted Running Speed and Performance in Collegiate Runners

Abstract:The goal of the study was to determine the effect of altering running strategy on predicted running performance in distance runners through application of a novel prediction model. Fifteen male (n = 10; Age: 22.2 ± 4.9 years; Height: 177.7 ± 7.4 cm; Mass: 68.6 ± 6.7 kg) and female (n = 5; Age: 21.8 ± 4.1 years; Height: 167.4 ± 7.8 cm; Mass: 59.3 ± 8.1 kg) long distance runners were recruited to participate in the study. Participants' oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide (VCO2) were measured by a metabolic cart using a face mask. After a brief warm-up, participants rested for the initial five minutes then ran at their preferred speed for five minutes. Participants rested for another five minutes while their oxygen consumption returned to baseline measurements and ran for five minutes while increasing step rate by 7.5%. There was no significant difference between conditions for VO2 measurements and energetic cost (p > 0.05). There was also no significant difference in the baseline, self-selected speed and predicted speed resulting from the increase in step rate (p > 0.05). Increasing stride rate 7.5% resulted in an average decrease in predicted running speed of 1%. While statistically insignificant, small decrements in running speed can accrue over time and negatively impact running performance.
Effects of a Concurrent Strength and Endurance Training on Running Performance and Running Economy in Recreational Marathon Runners

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a concurrent strength and endurance training program on running performance and running economy of middle-aged runners during their marathon preparation. Twenty-two (8 women and 14 men) recreational runners (mean ± SD: age 40.0 ± 11.7 years; body mass index 22.6 ± 2.1 kg·m⁻²) were separated into 2 groups (n = 11; combined endurance running and strength training program [ES]: 9 men, 2 women and endurance running [E]: 7 men, and 4 women). Both completed an 8-week intervention period that consisted of either endurance training (E: 276 ± 108 minute running per week) or a combined endurance and strength training program (ES: 240 ± 121-minute running plus 2 strength training sessions per week [120 minutes]). Strength training was focused on trunk (strength endurance program) and leg muscles (high-intensity program). Before and after the intervention, subjects completed an incremental treadmill run and maximal isometric strength tests. The initial values for VO2peak (ES: 52.0 ± 6.1 vs. E: 51.1 ± 7.5 ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) and anaerobic threshold (ES: 3.5 ± 0.4 vs. E: 3.4 ± 0.5 m·s⁻¹) were identical in both groups. A significant time × intervention effect was found for maximal isometric force of knee extension (ES: from 4.6 ± 1.4 to 6.2 ± 1.0 N·kg⁻¹, p < 0.01), whereas no changes in body mass occurred. No significant differences between the groups and no significant interaction (time × intervention) were found for VO2 (absolute and relative to VO2peak) at defined marathon running velocities (2.4 and 2.8 m·s⁻¹) and submaximal blood lactate thresholds (2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 mmol·L⁻¹). Stride length and stride frequency also remained unchanged. The results suggest no benefits of an 8-week concurrent strength training for running economy and coordination of recreational marathon runners despite a clear improvement in leg strength, maybe because of an insufficient sample size or a short intervention period.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to compare running economy across habituated and nonhabituated advanced footwear technology (AFT) in trained long-distance runners. Methods: A total of 16 participants completed up to six 5-minute trials in 1 to 3 pairs of their own habituated shoes and 3 different and standardized AFTs at individual marathon pace. We measured oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production and expressed running economy as oxygen uptake (in milliliters oxygen per kilogram per minute), oxygen cost of transport (oxygen per kilogram per minute), energetic cost (in watts per kilogram), and energetic cost of transport (in joules per kilogram per kilometer). We used linear mixed-effect models to evaluate differences. Relative shoe weight and shoe mileage (distance worn during running) were covariates. Results: Forty-eight standardized and 29 individual AFT conditions were measured (mileage 117.0 [128.8] km, range 0–522 km; 25 habituated 135.7 [129.2] km, range 20–522 km; 4 nonhabituated 0 [0] km, range 0–0 km). Rating of perceived exertion, blood [La], and respiratory exchange ratio ranged from 9 to 15, 1.11 to 4.54 mmol/L, and 0.76 to 1.01. There was no effect for habituation on energetic cost of transport (thabituation = −.232, P = .409, b = −0.006; 95% CI, −0.058 to 0.046) or other running economy metrics. Neither shoe weight nor shoe mileage had an effect. Conclusions: Our results suggest that habituation to AFTs does not result in greater benefits in the use of AFTs. This means that implementation in training may not be needed, even if we cannot rule out any other possible benefits of habituation at this stage, such as adaptation of the musculoskeletal system.

Abstract:There is conflicting evidence whether hypoxia improves running economy (RE), maximal O(2) uptake (V(O)(2max)), haemoglobin mass (Hb(mass)) and performance, and what total accumulated dose is necessary for effective adaptation. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an extended hypoxic exposure on these physiological and performance measures. Nine elite middle distance runners were randomly assigned to a live high-train low simulated altitude group (ALT) and spent 46+/-8 nights (mean+/-S.D.) at 2860+/-41m. A matched control group (CON, n=9) lived and trained near sea level ( approximately 600m). ALT decreased submaximal V(O)(2) (Lmin(-1)) (-3.2%, 90% confidence intervals, -1.0% to -5.2%, p=0.02), increased Hb(mass) (4.9%, 2.3-7.6%, p=0.01), decreased submaximal heart rate (-3.1%, -1.8% to -4.4%, p=0.00) and had a trivial increase in V(O)(2max) (1.5%, -1.6 to 4.8; p=0.41) compared with CON. There was a trivial correlation between change in Hb(mass) and change in V(O)(2max) (r=0.04, p=0.93). Hypoxic exposure of approximately 400h was sufficient to improve Hb(mass), a response not observed with shorter exposures. Although total O(2) carrying capacity was improved, the mechanism(s) to explain the lack of proportionate increase in V(O)(2max) were not identified.

Maximal Oxygen Uptake Adjusted for Skeletal Muscle Mass in Competitive Speed-Power and Endurance Male Athletes: Changes in a One-Year Training Cycle

Abstract:We compared the changes in maximum oxygen uptake (V·O2max) calculated per skeletal muscle mass (SMM) with conventional V·O2max measures in a 1-year training cycle. We hypothesized that the pattern of changes would differ between SMM-adjusted and absolute or weight-adjusted values, and the differences between groups of distinct training specialization and status will depend on the measure used. Twelve sprinters (24.7 ± 3.3 years), 10 endurance runners (25.3 ± 5.3 years), and 10 recreationally trained controls (29 ± 4.5 years) performed a treadmill test until exhaustion to determine V·O2max. Their SMM was estimated based on the dual X-ray absorptiometry method and a regression equation. The significance of differences was assessed using analysis of variance (p ≤ 0.05). The pattern of the longitudinal change was not different between V·O2max/SMM and standard measures. Also, the significance of differences between sprinters and endurance athletes remained similar regardless of the V·O2max measure. Sprinters and controls had similar absolute (~4.3 L·min−1) and total weight-adjusted (~52 vs. ~56 mL·min−1·kg) V·O2max, but they significantly differed in SMM-adjusted V·O2max (~110 vs. ~130 mL·min−1·kg SMM−1). In summary, SMM-adjusted V·O2max is not more useful than standard measures to track longitudinal changes in competitive athletes. However, it allows to better distinguish between groups or individuals differing in training status. The results of our study are limited to male athletes.

The Effect of Strength Training on Performance Indicators in Distance Runners

In addition to cardiovascular function, RE and VV[Combining Dot Above]O2max are partly dictated by neuromuscular factors. One technique to improve neuromuscular function in athletes is through strength training. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a 40-week strength training intervention on strength (maximal and reactive strength), VV[Combining Dot Above]O2max, economy, and body composition (body mass, fat, and lean mass) in competitive distance runners. Twenty competitive distance runners were divided into an intervention group (n = 11; 29.5 ± 10.0 years; 72.8 ± 6.6 kg; 1.83 ± 0.08 m) and a control group (n = 9; 27.4 ± 7.2 years; 70.2 ± 6.4 kg; 1.77 ± 0.04 m). During week 0, 20, and 40, each subject completed 3 assessments: physiology (V2 mmol·L BLa, V2 mmol·L BLa [blood lactate], V4 mmol·L BLa, RE, VV[Combining Dot Above]O2max, V[Combining Dot Above]O2max), strength (1 repetition maximum back squat; countermovement jump and 0.3 m drop jump), and body composition (body mass, fat mass, overall lean, and leg lean). The intervention group showed significant improvements in maximal and reactive strength qualities, RE, and VV[Combining Dot Above]O2max, at weeks 20 (p ≤ 0.05) and 40 (p ≤ 0.05). The control group showed no significant changes at either time point. There were no significant changes in body composition variables between or within groups. This study demonstrates that 40 weeks of strength training can significantly improve maximal and reactive strength qualities, RE, and VV[Combining Dot Above]O2max, without concomitant hypertrophy, in competitive distance runners.
Improved running economy in elite runners after 20 days of simulated moderate-altitude exposure

Abstract:To investigate the effect of altitude exposure on running economy (RE), 22 elite distance runners [maximal O 2 consumption (V̇o 2 ) 72.8 ± 4.4 ml·kg -1 ·min -1 ; training volume 128 ± 27 km/wk], who were homogenous for maximal V̇o 2 and training, were assigned to one of three groups: live high (simulated altitude of 2,000–3,100 m)-train low (LHTL; natural altitude of 600 m), live moderate-train moderate (LMTM; natural altitude of 1,500–2,000 m), or live low-train low (LLTL; natural altitude of 600 m) for a period of 20 days. RE was assessed during three submaximal treadmill runs at 14, 16, and 18 km/h before and at the completion of each intervention. V̇o 2 , minute ventilation (V̇e), respiratory exchange ratio, heart rate, and blood lactate concentration were determined during the final 60 s of each run, whereas hemoglobin mass (Hb mass ) was measured on a separate occasion. All testing was performed under normoxic conditions at ∼600 m. V̇o 2 (l/min) averaged across the three submaximal running speeds was 3.3% lower ( P = 0.005) after LHTL compared with either LMTM or LLTL. V̇e, respiratory exchange ratio, heart rate, and Hb mass were not significantly different after the three interventions. There was no evidence of an increase in lactate concentration after the LHTL intervention, suggesting that the lower aerobic cost of running was not attributable to an increased anaerobic energy contribution. Furthermore, the improved RE could not be explained by a decrease in V̇e or by preferential use of carbohydrate as a metabolic substrate, nor was it related to any change in Hb mass . We conclude that 20 days of LHTL at simulated altitude improved the RE of elite distance runners.

Factors correlated with running economy among elite middle- and long-distance runners

Abstract:Running economy (RE) at a given submaximal running velocity is defined as oxygen consumption per minute per kg body mass. We investigated RE in a group of 12 male elite runners of national class. In addition to RE at 14 and 18 km h-1 we measured the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max ) and anthropometric measures including the moment arm of the Achilles tendon (LAch ), shank and foot volumes, and muscular fascicle lengths. A 3-D biomechanical movement analysis of treadmill running was also conducted. RE was on average 47.8 and 62.3 ml O2 min-1 kg-1 at 14 and 18 km h-1 . Maximal difference between the individual athletes was 21% at 18 km h-1 . Mechanical work rate was significantly correlated with VO2 measured in L min-1 at both running velocities. However, RE and relative work rate were not significantly correlated. LAch was significantly correlated with RE at 18 km h-1 implying that a short moment arm is advantageous regarding RE. Neither foot volume nor shank volume were significantly correlated to RE. Relative muscle fascicle length of m. soleus was significantly correlated with RE at 18 km h-1 . Whole body stiffness and leg stiffness were significantly correlated with LAch indicating that a short moment arm coincided with high stiffness. It is concluded that a short LAch is correlated with RE. Probably, a short LAch allows for storage of a larger amount of elastic energy in the tendon and influences the force-velocity relation toward a lower contraction velocity.

Abstract:Recent studies have suggested that the capability to resist deterioration of physiological characteristics could be an independent factor contributing to endurance performance. Acute changes in muscle activation and leg extension performance after different running exercises in elite long distance runners

Abstract:This study investigated acute changes in muscle activation and muscular power performance after three different running exercises in elite long-distance runners. Twenty-two nationally and internationally ranked long-distance runners performed first an incremental treadmill running test until exhaustion (MR) and then 40 min continuous (TR) and intermittent (2 min run/2 min rest) (IR) running exercises at an intensity of 80 and 100% of the velocity associated with VO(2max), respectively. Muscle activation and muscular power performance tests (counter-movement jumps, CMJ, and a set of ten maximal half squats from the static starting position with an extra load of 35% of the subjects, one repetition maximum) were performed before and immediately after the runs. The average mechanical power (P) of the half squats was calculated and the root mean square electromyogram (EMGrms) from the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, gastrocnemius and biceps femoris muscles was recorded simultaneously during the half squat performances. The results showed an acute exercise-induced increase in P (ANOVA time effect, P = 0.000) together with a reduction in EMGrms of the knee extensor muscles (ANOVA time effect, P = 0.000). However, mechanical P expressed as a relative change within the set decreased after MR. In TR the improvement in P correlated positively with the maximal running performance of the runners (P < 0.05), while in IR it correlated negatively (P < 0.05). Jumping performance was significantly enhanced after each run (P < 0.001, for all) and the improvement correlated negatively with the maximal sprinting speed and maximal jumping height of the runners (P < 0.01, for all). It is concluded that in elite long distance runners an intensive prolonged running exercise reduces the surface EMG of the knee extensor muscles, and may lead to a different coordination strategy in leg extension exercises performed into the vertical direction. After continuous type of running the power improvement correlates positively with maximal endurance running capacity, whereas after intermittent type of running it correlates negatively.
RUNNING ECONOMY AT HABITUALLY FOREFOOT AND HABITUALLY REARFOOTRUNNERS

Abstract:The research focused on changes in running economy – minute oxygen uptake, heart rate. We have compared forefoot run and rearfoot run at habitually forefoot runners and habitually rearfoot runners. The research attended sixteen healthy, injury free, amateur distance runners, eight habitually forefoot runners and eight habitually rearfoot runners. The research conducted in laboratory condition on the treadmill. Testing speed was set at 12 kilometers per hour. Duration of the test was 2x12 minutes. Athletes ran one test with impact on the toe and one test with impact on the heel. Oxygen uptake: Median habitually FFS – test forefoot: 3.156 ± 0.38 ; test rearfoot: 3.017 ± 0.42 . Median habitually RFS – test forefoot: 3.323 ± 0.31 ; test rearfoot: 3.106 ± 0.35 . Heart rate: Median habitually FFS – test forefoot: 146.10 ± 8.88 bpm; test rearfoot: 144.75 ± 11.62 bpm. Median habitually RFS – test forefoot: 170.87 ± 17.28 bpm; test rearfoot: 167.99 ± 16.20 bpm. Habitually forefoot runners has higher oxygen uptake, when they run forefoot. Difference at habitually forefoot runners between rearfoot and forefoot is 0.139 . The proponents of rearfoot running advocate that human feet are born to run rear on the ground because our ancestors ran for thousands of years.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of running-induced acute fatigue on the homeostasis of the body is essential to mitigate the adverse effects and optimize positive adaptations to training. Fatigue is a multifactorial phenomenon, which influences biomechanical, physiological, and psychological facets. This work aimed to assess the evolution of these three facets with acute fatigue during a half-marathon. 13 recreational runners were equipped with one inertial measurement unit (IMU) on each foot, one combined global navigation satellite system-IMU-electrocardiogram sensor on the chest, and an Android smartphone equipped with an audio recording application. Spatio-temporal parameters for the running gait, along with the heart rate, its variability and complexity were computed using validated algorithms. Perceived fatigability was assessed using the rating-of-fatigue (ROF) scale at every 10 min of the race. The data was split into eight equal segments, corresponding to at least one ROF value per segment, and only level running parts were retained for analysis. During the race, contact time, duty factor, and trunk anteroposterior acceleration increased, and the foot strike angle and vertical stiffness decreased significantly. Heart rate showed a progressive increase, while the metrics for heart rate variability and complexity decreased during the race. The biomechanical parameters showed a significant alteration even with a small change in perceived fatigue, whereas the heart rate dynamics altered at higher changes. When divided into two groups, the slower runners presented a higher change in heart rate dynamics throughout the race than the faster runners; they both showed similar trends for the gait parameters. When tested for linear and non-linear correlations, heart rate had the highest association with biomechanical parameters, while the trunk anteroposterior acceleration had the lowest association with heart rate dynamics. These results indicate the ability of faster runners to better judge their physiological limits and hint toward a higher sensitivity of perceived fatigue to neuromuscular changes in the running gait. This study highlights measurable influences of acute fatigue, which can be studied only through concurrent measurement of biomechanical, physiological, and psychological facets of running in real-world conditions.
