Abstract:In this note, we address several issues, including some raised in recent works and commentary, related to bending measures and energies for plates and shells, and certain of their invariance properties. We discuss overlaps and distinctions in results arising from two different definitions of stretching, correct an error and citation oversights in our prior work, reiterate some of the early history of dilation-invariant bending measures, and provide additional brief observations regarding the relative size of energetic terms and the symmetrization of bending measures. A particular point of emphasis is the distinction between dilation-invariant measures and a recently introduced non-dilation-invariant measure for shells and curved rods. In the course of this discussion, we provide a simpler presentation of the elementary, but much neglected, fact that the through-thickness derivative of tangential stretch of material near the mid-surface of a thin body is the product of the mid-surface stretch and change in curvature.

A Simply Analytic Study of Buckled Thin Films on Compliant Substrates

Abstract:Buckling of stiff thin films on compliant substrates enables many new applications, such as stretchable electronics. Song et al. [2008, "Buckling of a Stiff Thin Film on a Compliant Substrate in Large Deformation," Int. J. Solids Struct., 45(10), pp. 3107-3121] developed a finite deformation theory to explain the buckled amplitude and wavelength very well. This theory not only accounts for finite geometry change, but also the finite strain and a nonlinear constitutive model for the substrate. To provide a better physical insight, this paper investigates those three effects, and shows that finite geometry change dominates in the finite deformation theory and the simplified analysis leads to results that agree well with experiments and the finite element method.
A new anisotropic bending model for nonlinear shells: Comparison with existing models and isogeometric finite element implementation

Abstract:A new nonlinear hyperelastic bending model for shells formulated directly in surface form is presented, and compared to four prominently used bending models. Through an essential set of elementary nonlinear bending test cases, the stresses and moments of each model are examined analytically. Only the proposed bending model passes all the test cases while the other bending models either fail or only pass the test cases for small deformations. The proposed new bending model can handle large deformations and initially curved surfaces. It is based on the principal curvatures and their directions in the initial configuration, and it thus can have different bending moduli along those directions. These characteristics make it flexible in modeling a given material, while it does not suffer from the pathologies of existing bending models. Further, the bending models are compared computationally through four classical benchmark examples and one contact example. As the underlying shell theory is based on Kirchhoff-Love kinematics, isogeometric NURBS shape functions are used to discretize the shell surface. The linearization and efficient finite element implementation of the proposed new model are also provided.

Abstract:Purpose Precise assessment of elastic stress is required in the field of fracture mechanics. While bending a straight pipe, the deformation of the circular cross section out of roundness called ovality and thinning are foreseeable. The ovality has a significant effect on the structural integrity of the pipe. The sole objective of this paper is to provide new analytical solutions to predict accurate elastic stress distribution at the median section of the U-bend, with deformities such as ovality and thinning when subjected to in-plane closing moment by using elastic finite element analysis. Design/methodology/approach The quarter model of the U bend has been analysed by using ABAQUS. The elastic stress components included in this analysis are longitudinal bending stress, longitudinal membrane stress, circumferential bending stress and circumferential membrane stress. Based on finite element results, analytical elastic stress solutions are also provided for both longitudinal and circumferential stresses by using these stress components. Findings As the ovality has a significant effect, it is further included in the analytical solution. The thinning is not included since it has very little effect. Analytical stress solutions are provided for a wide range of bend characteristics to include ovality, mean radius and thickness. Originality/value Significance of ovality and thinning on elastic stress of U-bend has not been reported in the existing literature.

Abstract:It has become commonplace for the stored energy function of any realistic shell model to align ``within first order" with the classical Koiter membrane-bending (flexural) shell model. In this paper, we assess whether certain extended Cosserat shell models are consistent with the classical linear Koiter model. In doing this, we observe that there are numerous reasons why a modified version of the classical Koiter model should be considered, a consensus reached not only by Koiter himself but also by Sanders and Budiansky, who independently developed the same theory during the same period. To provide a comprehensive overview of the strain measures employed in our Cosserat shell models, this paper presents them in a unified manner and compares them with the strain measures previously utilized in the literature. We show that all our new strain tensors either generalize (in the case of nonlinear constrained or unconstrained models) or coincide (in the case of the linear constrained model) with the strain tensors recognized as the ``best" or those possessing a well-defined geometric interpretation connected to bending or curvature.

Abstract:In Bonito (J. Comput. Phys. 448:110719, 2022), a local discontinous Galerkin method was proposed for approximating the large bending of prestrained plates, and in Bonito (IMA J. Numer. Anal. 43:627-662, 2023) the numerical properties of this method were explored. These works considered deformations driven predominantly by bending. Thus, a bending energy with a metric constraint was considered. We extend these results to the case of an energy with both a bending component and a nonconvex stretching component, and we also consider folding across a crease. The proposed discretization of this energy features a continuous finite element space, as well as the discrete Hessian used in Bonito (J. Comput. Phys. 448:110719, 2022; IMA J. Numer. Anal. 43:627-662, 2023). We establish the -convergence of the discrete to the continuous energy and also present an energy-decreasing gradient flow for finding critical points of the discrete energy. Finally, we provide numerical simulations illustrating the convergence of minimizers and the capabilities of the model.

Abstract:Bifurcation of an elastic structure crucially depends on the curvature of the constraints against which the ends of the structure are prescribed to move, an effect which deserves more attention than it has received so far. In fact, we show theoretically and we provide definitive experimental verification that an appropriate curvature of the constraint over which the end of a structure has to slide strongly affects buckling loads and can induce: (i.) tensile buckling; (ii.) decreasing- (softening), increasing- (hardening), or constant-load (null stiffness) postcritical behaviour; (iii.) multiple bifurcations, determining for instance two bifurcation loads (one tensile and one compressive) in a single-degree-of-freedom elastic system. We show how to design a constraint profile to obtain a desired postcritical behaviour and we provide the solution for the elastica constrained to slide along a circle on one end, representing the first example of an inflexional elastica developed from a buckling in tension. These results have important practical implications in the design of compliant mechanisms and may find applications in devices operating in quasi-static or dynamic conditions.

Abstract:It is well known that the linearized theory of elasticity admits the logically inconsistent solution of singular strains when applied to certain naive models of fracture while the theory is a first-order approximation to finite elasticity in the asymptotic limit of infinitesimal displacement gradient. Meanwhile, the strain-limiting models, a special subclass of nonlinear implicit constitutive relations, predict uniformly bounded strain in the whole material body including at the strain-concentrator such as a crack tip or reentrant corner. Such a nonlinear approximation cannot be possible within the standard linearization procedure of either Cauchy or Green elasticity. In this work, we examine a finite-element discretization for several boundary value problems to study the state of stress–strain in the solid body of which response is described by a nonlinear strain-limiting theory of elasticity. The problems of notches, oriented cracks, and an interface crack in anti-plane shear are analyzed. The numerical results indicate that the linearized strain remains below a value that can be fixed a priori, therefore, ensuring the validity of the nonlinear model. In addition, we find high stress values in the neighborhood of the crack tip in every example, thereby suggesting that the crack tip acts as a singular energy sink for a stationary crack. We also calculate the stress intensity factor (SIF) in this study. The computed value of SIF in the nonlinear strain-limiting model is corresponding to that of the classical linear model, and thereby providing a tenet for a possible local criterion for fracture. The framework of strain-limiting theories, within which the linearized strain bears a nonlinear relationship with the stress, can provide a rational basis for developing physically meaningful models to study a crack evolution in elastic solids.

Bending of Biomimetic Scale Covered Beams Under Discrete Non-periodic Engagement

Abstract:Covering elastic substrates with stiff biomimetic scales significantly alters the bending behavior via scales engagement. This engagement is the dominant source of nonlinearity in small deflection regime. As deformation proceeds, an initially linear bending response gives way to progressive stiffening and thereafter a geometrically dictated 'locked' configuration. However, investigation of this system has been carried out until date using assumption of periodic engagement even after scales contact. This is true only under the most ideal loading conditions or if the scales are extremely dense akin to a continuum assumption on the scales. However, this is not true for a practical system where scales are more discrete and where loading can alter periodicity of engagement. We address this nonlinear problem for the first time in small deflection and rotation regime. Our combined modeling and numerical analysis show that relaxing periodicity better represents the geometry of discrete scales engagement and mechanics of the beam under general loading conditions and allows us to revisit the nonlinear behavior. We report significant differences from predictions of periodic models in terms of predicting the behavior of scales after engagement. These include the difference in the angular displacement of scales, normal force magnitudes along the length, moment curvature relationship as well as a distinct nature of the locking behavior. Therefore, non-periodicity is an important yet unexplored feature of this problem, which leads to insights, absent in previous investigations. This opens way for developing the structure-property-architecture framework for design and optimization of these topologically leveraged solids.

Abstract:Modern analytical tools, from microfocus X-ray diffraction (XRD) to electron microscopy-based microtexture measurements, offer exciting possibilities of diffraction-based multiscale residual strain measurements. The different techniques differ in scale and resolution, but may also yield significantly different strain values. This study, for example, clearly established that high-resolution electron backscattered diffraction (HR-EBSD) and high-resolution transmission Kikuchi diffraction (HR-TKD) [sensitive to changes in interplanar angle (Δθθ)], provide quantitatively higher residual strains than micro-Laue XRD and transmission electron microscope (TEM) based precession electron diffraction (PED) [sensitive to changes in interplanar spacing (Δdd)]. Even after correcting key known factors affecting the accuracy of HR-EBSD strain measurements, a scaling factor of ∼1.57 (between HR-EBSD and micro-Laue) emerged. We have then conducted "virtual" experiments by systematically deforming an ideal lattice by either changing an interplanar angle (α) or a lattice parameter (a). The patterns were kinematically and dynamically simulated, and corresponding strains were measured by HR-EBSD. These strains showed consistently higher values for lattice(s) distorted by α, than those altered by a. The differences in strain measurements were further emphasized by mapping identical location with HR-TKD and TEM-PED. These measurements exhibited different spatial resolution, but when scaled (with ∼1.57) provided similar lattice distortions numerically.

Abstract:The problem of an anisotropic ellipsoidal inclusion which undergoes a stress-free transformation strain (in the sense of J.D. Eshelby) is considered, and the following theorem is proved: If an ellipsoidal region in an infinite anisotropic linear elastic medium undergoes, in the absence of its surroundings, a stress-free transformation strain which is a polynomial of degree M in the position coordinates xt, then the final stress and strain state in the transformed inclusion, when constrained by its surroundings, is also a polynomial of degree M in xt.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive study of the intrinsic strain response of 3D heterostructures arising from lattice mismatch. Combining materials with different lattice constants induces strain, leading to the bending of these heterostructures. We propose a model for nonlinear elastic heterostructures such as bimetallic beams or nanowires that takes into account local prestrain within each distinct material region. The resulting system of partial differential equations (PDEs) in Lagrangian coordinates incorporates a nonlinear strain and a linear stress‐strain relationship governed by Hooke's law. To validate our model, we apply it to bimetallic beams and hexagonal hetero‐nanowires and perform numerical simulations using finite element methods (FEM). Our simulations examine how these structures undergo bending under varying material compositions and cross‐sectional geometries. In order to assess the fidelity of the model and the accuracy of simulations, we compare the calculated curvature with analytically derived formulations. We derive these analytical expressions through an energy‐based approach as well as a kinetic framework, adeptly accounting for the lattice constant mismatch present at each compound material of the heterostructures. The outcomes of our study yield valuable insights into the behavior of strained bent heterostructures. This is particularly significant as the strain has the potential to influence the electronic band structure, piezoelectricity, and the dynamics of charge carriers.

Abstract:The non-linear flexural behaviour of a tape spring — whose cross section has a uniform curvature — is produced by the presence of an elastic instability. However, these are not the only structures that possess non-linear flexural behaviour. Panel-springs and bridged tape springs are examples of structures that can also produce this behaviour. Predicting the flexural behaviour of these structures is more challenging because their cross section is non-uniform. This work presents an analytical model that can predict the opposite-sense flexural behaviour of thin strips that have a non-uniform cross section. The novel attribute of this model is in the utilisation of a univariate polynomial series to describe the initial cross section of the strip. The model is applied to a range of bridged tape springs and panel-springs, with the results compared with solutions obtained from the Finite Element (FE) method. A consistent error of less than 5.5% is achieved between the analytical model and the FE model when the snap-through moment and propagation moment are compared. The analytical model is also compared with independent experimental data of the flexural behaviour of a traditional carpenter's tape measure. An error of less than 1% and 7% of the snap-through moment and propagation moment, respectively, is achieved.

Abstract:We discuss the response of thin cylindrical tubes to small indentations. The stretching-free embedding of these surfaces is completely determined by the embedding of one edge curve, thus reducing their bending response to an effectively one dimensional problem. We obtain that in general thin cylindrical tubes will bend non-uniformly in response to an indentation normal to their surface. As a consequence, their local bending stiffness, as measured by indenting at various locations along their axis, is predicted to peak at the center and decrease by a universal factor of 4 at either end of the tube. This characteristic spatial profile of the bending stiffness variation allows a direct determination of the bending modulus of very thin tubes that are shorter than their pinch persistence length, $l_{p}\propto R^{3/2}/t^{1/2}$, where $R$ is the tube diameter and $t$ its wall thickness. We compare our results with experiments performed on rolled-up stainless steel sheets.

Abstract:Motivated by experiments and formal asymptotic expansions in the physics literature, Maor and Shachar (J. Elasticity 134 (2019), 149-173) studied the behaviour of a model elastic energy of maps between manifolds with incompatible metrics. For thin objects they analysed the scaling of the minimal elastic energy as a function of the thickness. In particular they showed that for maps from a ball of radius h in an oriented Riemannian manifold to Euclidean space, the infimum of a model elastic energy per unit volume scales like the fourth power of h and after rescaling one gets convergence to a quadratic expression in the curvature tensor R(p), where p denotes the centre of the ball. In this paper we show the same result for general compact oriented Riemannian targets with R(p) replaced by a suitable difference of the curvature tensors in the target and the domain, thus answering Open Question 1 in the paper by Maor and Shachar. The result extends noncompact targets provided they satisfy a uniform regularity condition. A key idea in the proof is to use Lipschitz approximations to define a suitable notion of convergence.

Abstract:This paper is focused on the gross plastic deformation design check of the direct route in European standard EN 13445-3 and its applications. Six methods for the evaluation of the structural strain are introduced and compared. A generally applicable method for structural strain evaluation – the strain linearization method is presented. Refer to the maximum principle structural strain criterion used by the direct route in EN 13445-3, a maximum equivalent structural strain criterion is presented, and the criterion is more suitable for ductile materials widely used in the pressure vessels.
Scaling theory of critical strain-stiffening in disordered elastic networks

Abstract:Disordered elastic networks provide a framework for describing a wide variety of physical systems, ranging from amorphous solids, through polymeric fibrous materials to confluent cell tissues. In many cases, such networks feature two widely separated rigidity scales and are nearly floppy, yet they undergo a dramatic stiffening transition when driven to sufficiently large strains. We present a complete scaling theory of the critical strain-stiffened state in terms of the small ratio between the rigidity scales, which is conceptualized in the framework of a singular perturbation theory. The critical state features quartic anharmonicity, from which a set of nonlinear scaling relations is derived. Scaling predictions for the macroscopic elastic modulus beyond the critical state are derived as well, revealing a previously unidentified characteristic strain scale. The predictions are quantitatively compared to a broad range of available numerical data on biopolymer network models and future research questions are discussed.

Abstract:A new method for obtaining equivalent stress–strain curves of bilinear and Swift law material models from the numerical results of shear–compression test (SCT) is developed. This task is conducted on the basis of the approximate analytical relations for the compression and shear conditions at the gauge section and by the application of correction factors. Logarithmic correction models are developed and used to generalize the geometry of an optimum shear–compression specimen (SCS) that is calibrated by one-factor-at-time method for a reference material. Furthermore, a dataset created from 125 finite element simulations is analyzed by data analysis techniques, and a universal nonlinear strain hardening relationship is determined. This model is used to predict the stress–strain curves directly from the force–displacement curve of the SCS. The input and output stress–strain curves are in good agreement with an average error of approximately 3%. The numerical findings of this study provide a foundation to develop a general quantitative relationship to study the behavior of materials by SCT.
