Abstract:This issue of Medicinal Research Reviews is dedicated to Professor Li-He Zhang, Boya Chair Professor and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Peking University, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Professor Zhang obtained his bachelor degree in 1958 and his graduate diploma in 1967, both in medicinal chemistry, from the Department of Pharmacy, Beijing Medical College. As a graduate student, he worked on triazine chemistry and synthesis of sulfur substituted sugars under the guidance of Prof. Xu Wang. He worked in Dr. Sidney Hecht′s group as a research associate from 1981 to 1983 in the Department of Chemistry, University of Virginia (USA), where he focused on total synthesis of bleomycin A2 and its mechanism of action in DNA cleavage. He also worked on manual synthesis of oligonucleotides. Professor Zhang returned to China and became a professor of medicinal chemistry in 1985 in the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Beijing Medical University (now Peking University Health Science Center), a position that he has held until now. He also served as the dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1987–1999), and founded the State Key Laboratory of Natural and Biomimetic Drugs in 1985 and served as its director (1992–2005). His research interest has centered on studies of various chemical and biological issues of nucleic acids, and development of anticancer and antiviral drugs. Specifically, he has developed a series of methods and strategies for precise modifications of antisense oligonucleotides, siRNA, and aptamers, and made significant contributions to the field of ribozyme mechanism of action, artificial oligonucleotides, and nucleosides and nucleotides as anticancer and antiviral agents. He has also developed many analogs of intracellular messenger nucleotides (cADPR and cAMP), carried out systematic studies of their chemical and biological activities, and discovered a cADPR-binding protein related to calcium release activities in cells. Professor Zhang has published extensively in the field of nucleic acids and medicinal chemistry with more than 300 research articles/reviews and five books. Prof. Zhang was elected into the Chinese Academy of Science in 1995 and chaired the Chemistry Division of National Natural Science Foundation of China between 1999 and 2006. He has a long list of other honors and positions including serving as chairman of the Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Associations (1997–1999), vice Chairman of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association (1997–2007), a titular member of Division of Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) (2005–2006), and a fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) (since 2006). His research awards include Japan Otani Research Award, Wu-Yang award in medicine, Colorcon award (FIP), HeliangHeli award, Nagai-Hisamitsu award (FAPA), and a National Award in Natural Sciences among others. He was granted an honorary doctorate degree by Hoshi University, Japan, in 1991, and Edgar-Snow Professorship by Missouri University in Kansas City, USA, in 1992. He has been on the editorial advisory boards of many scientific journals including Medicinal Research Reviews, Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry, Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, and ChemMedChem, He is associate editor of European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, editor of Journal of Chinese Pharmaceutical Sciences, and associate editor of Journal of Chemistry of Chinese Universities. Prof. Zhang has been a thought leader in and a strong advocate for the field of medicinal chemistry and chemical biology in China. As a board member of the National Natural Science Foundation, he proposed and led two key research initiatives on chemical biology: regulation of signal pathways with small molecule probes (2008–2016) and dynamic modification and chemical intervention of biomacromolecules (2017–2025). To celebrate the 80th birthday of Professor Zhang, the International Symposium on Frontiers of Natural and Biomimetic Drugs was organized (October 2017) to honor his contributions in nucleic acid chemistry and medicinal chemistry. At the same time, we organized this special issue of Medicinal Research Reviews in his honor as a tribute to his many outstanding contributions in science, and to his devotion to mentoring many young scientists in the field of chemical biology and medicinal chemistry in China.

Abstract:Prof. Zhou Jun, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (1999), is a phytochemist and medicinal chemist of China. He is one of the pioneers of Kunming Institute of Botany, CAS and a major founder of the State Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and Plant Resources in West China. The chemical compositions of some TCM from genus of Dioscorea, Aconitum, Panax, Paris, Cynanchum, Gastrodia, Dendrobium etc. and family Asclepiadaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Hypoxidaceae etc. have been explored by Prof. Zhou's team as steroids, triterpenoids, alkaloids, cyclic peptides and phenols etc., which revealed the main active composition of those TCM such as Panax notoginseng, Paris yunnanensis and Gastrodia elata.

Abstract:The Editorial Board wishes to dedicate this issue of Current Nanoscience to the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, FRS, on his 70th birthday. The Editorial Board acknowledges the tremendous achievements of Prof. Rahman in the fields of Organic Chemistry in general and on bioactive natural products in particular. Prof. Rahman’s honors include: the first scientist from the Muslim world to have won the prestigious UNESCO Science Prize (1999) in the 35 year old history of the Prize; elected as Fellow of Royal Society (London) in July 2006; conferred honorary doctorate degrees from many prestigious universities, including the University of Cambridge. On a national level his services are acknowledged in the form of four prestigious civil awards, including these highest national awards: Nishan-e-Imtiaz (2002), Hilal-e-Imtiaz (1998), Sitara-e- Imtiaz (1991) and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (1983). At an academic level, Prof. Rahman has 856 publications in several fields of organic chemistry including 658 research publications, 21 patents, 113 books and 65 chapters in books published largely by major U.S. and European presses. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of 12 scientific journals in fields ranging from Medicinal Chemistry to Pharmaceutical Drug Design. Seventy six students have completed their Ph.D. degrees under his supervision. He chairs the Network of Academies of Sciences of Islamic Countries (NASIC) and is the Vice-President (Central & South Asia) of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) Council, and Foreign Fellow of Korean Academy of Sciences. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman was the President of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (2003-2006) and was again elected as the President of the Academy from 1stThe contributions of Prof. Rahman to the uplifting of science in Pakistan in his capacity as the Federal Minister for Science & Technology and later as Chairman Higher Education Commission were acknowledged by a high level Civil Award of the government of Austria and TWAS prize for institution building as well as by four editorials in Nature. Extracting value: mechanistic insights into the formation of natural product artifacts - case studies in marine natural products

Abstract:Covering: up to the end of 2018Natural selection relentlessly drives the evolution of natural products, favoring those that enhance the survival of species. During this evolutionary journey, some natural products acquire heightened chemical reactivity towards environmental stimuli, most likely benefiting host species through more agile ecological responses, leading to superior survival outcomes (i.e., more potent and faster acting toxins and chemical defences, infection control, and intra/inter species chemical communication). Although knowledge of natural products informs our understanding of the living world, inspiring new medicines, agrochemicals and scientific tools, the study of chemically reactive natural products can be particularly informative, albeit quite challenging. For example, such natural products are often prone to facile transformations during handling, yielding new "un-natural" products commonly referred to as artifacts. These transformations can be induced by many stimuli, including modest changes in pH or temperature, or exposure to light or air (i.e., oxygen), or even common organic solvents or chromatography media. Sadly, in the race to explore and report on new natural products, knowledge of the relationship between chemically reactive natural products and their artifacts is not always recognised, documented or valued. This review seeks to recalibrate and encourage a greater awareness of the relationship between natural products and artifacts, by examining case studies in the field of marine natural products chemistry (i.e., natural products and associated artifacts from marine invertebrates and algae, and marine-derived microbes). While every effort has been made to provide a comprehensive coverage up to early 2019, any omissions are inadvertent not deliberate. Structured around the types of chemical transformations that can deliver artifacts, and the functional groups involved, the review concludes with observations on how to regulate, detect, rationalise and even exploit artifacts, going forward.

Abstract:The marine environment contains a number of plants, animals and micro organisms, which, due to the unique adaptations to their habitat, elaborate a wide diversity of natural products with specific bioactivities. These products provide a rich source of chemical diversity that can be used to design and develop new potentially useful therapeutic agents. The huge variety of the structures present in marine organisms has been illustrated through the case study of the sponge Plakortis simplex, whose chemical analysis, started in our laboratories about ten years ago, revealed an incredible variety and abundance of secondary metabolites. The obtained results have been presented with the intention of drawing some conclusions of general relevance. Particularly, the problem of the limited availability of natural compounds for both structural and preliminary pharmacological studies has been discussed, this issue becoming a serious obstacle when the pharmacological research reaches a more advanced stage. Furthermore, the origin of the chemodiversity in Plakortis simplex and, in general, in marine invertebrates has been discussed; in this respect, the possible cooperative role of symbiotic micro-organisms in the biosynthesis of the varied metabolic content typical of these organisms has been considered.

Abstract:Professor Fosong Wang was born in Guangdong, China in 1933 and received his undergraduate education at Wuhan University between 1951 and 1955. Following graduation, he went to the Former Soviet Union to continue his graduate studies whereupon, in 1960, he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the Institute of High Molecular Compounds of the Soviet Union Academy of Science. After he returned to his motherland, Professor Wang joined the Chinese Academy of Sciences where he remains to this day. From 1985 to 1988, he served as Director of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, and from 1988 to 1994, Professor Wang served as Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Abstract:Bioorthogonal chemistry has enabled scientists to carry out controlled chemical processes in high yields in vivo while minimizing hazardous effects. Its extension to the field of polyoxometalates (POMs) could open up new possibilities and new applications in molecular electronics, sensing and catalysis, including inside living cells. However, this comes with many challenges that need to be addressed to effectively implement and exploit bioorthogonal reactions in the chemistry of POMs. In particular, how to protect POMs from the biological environment but make their reactivity selective towards specific bioorthogonal tags (and thereby reduce their toxicity), as well as which bioorthogonal chemistry protocols are suitable for POMs and how reactions can be carried out are questions that we are exploring herein. This perspective conceptualizes and discusses advances in the supramolecular chemistry of POMs, their click chemistry, and POM-based surface engineering to develop innovative bioorthogonal approaches tailored to POMs and to improve POM biological tolerance.
