Abstract:Considering an initial set of jobs locked by previous scheduling in a hybrid flow shop environment, as production progresses, another set of jobs that dynamically arrive since then has to be arranged and released for production. In this paper, a rescheduling model is proposed to investigate the problem of hybrid flow shop scheduling with the new arrival jobs. The optimization objective aims to minimize the maximum completion time of the rescheduling. An adaptive genetic algorithm is designed to solve the model. Simulation experimental results testify that the designed model and algorithm are effective and efficient.

Abstract:The past few years have witnessed a resurgence of interest in assembly flow shop scheduling as evidenced by increasing number of published articles in this field. A basic assembly flow shop consists of two types of stages: fabrication or machining stage and assembly stage. Machining and assembly stages are composed of either one or a set of machines that are working in parallel. Final products have hierarchical assembly structure with several components and assembly operation(s). The components need to be processed in the machining stage(s) and then assembled based on hierarchical assembly structure. The goal is to find the sequence of jobs that optimises certain objectives. Assembly flow shop scheduling problem has several interesting derivatives and applications in various manufacturing and service industries. This paper provides a consolidated survey of assembly flow shop models with their solution methodology. Finally, the paper concludes by presenting some problems receiving less attention and proposes several salient research opportunities.

Abstract:This paper studies the scheduling problem of hybrid flow shop under the objective of minimizing makespan. The design of scheduling simulation system is given in the paper. The system consists of three modules: database, algorithm and control center; in the algorithm module, numerous heuristic algorithms extended from flow shop are used to sort jobs, and then First Available Machine rule is applied to allocate parallel machines. In addition, the paper proposes a heuristic algorithm which is based on virtual machine and the slope index of Palmer to sequence jobs. Extensive experimentation with different problem sizes is conducted through the scheduling simulation system. The advantage of the algorithm proposed in this paper is demonstrated by both simulation results.

Abstract:This study aims to address a variant of the hybrid flow shop problem by simultaneously integrating lag times, unloading times, and transportation times, with the goal of minimizing the maximum completion time, or makespan. With applications in image processing, manufacturing, and industrial environments, this problem presents significant theoretical challenges, being classified as NP-hard. Notably, the problem demonstrates a notable symmetry property, resulting in a symmetric problem formulation where both the scheduling problem and its symmetric counterpart share the same optimal solution. To improve solution quality, all proposed procedures are extended to the symmetric problem. This research pioneers the consideration of the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with simultaneous attention to lag, unloading, and transportation times, building upon a comprehensive review of existing literature. A two-phase heuristic is introduced as a solution to this complex problem, involving iterative solving of parallel machine scheduling problems. This approach decomposes the problem into manageable sub-problems, facilitating focused and efficient resolution. The efficient solving of sub-problems using the developed heuristic yields satisfactory near-optimal solutions. Additionally, two new lower bounds are proposed, derived from estimating minimum idle time within each stage via solving a polynomial parallel machine problem aimed at minimizing total flow time. These lower bounds serve to evaluate the performance of the developed two-phase heuristic, over measuring the relative gap. Extensive experimental studies on benchmark test problems of varying sizes demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. All test problems are efficiently solved within reasonable timeframes, indicating practicality and efficiency. The proposed methods exhibit an average computational time of 8.93 seconds and an average gap of 2.75%. These computational results underscore the efficacy and potential applicability of the proposed approaches in real-world scenarios, providing valuable insights and paving the way for further research and practical implementations in hybrid flow shop scheduling.

Abstract:In the actual manufacturing process of seamless steel tubes, the scheduling of ordinary production workshops and cold drawing workshops is a problem with NP-hard characteristics. Aiming at ordinary production workshops and cold drawing workshops, distributed flow shop scheduling models and reentrant scheduling models are established. The two are heterogeneously distributed in space and have a sequential relationship in time. For the distributed flow shop scheduling, the fruit fly optimization method is used to solve the problem, and the NEH (Nawaz, Enscore,&Ham) heuristic is used to improve the quality of the initial solution in the initialization phase, and the load distribution in the factory is considered. Simulated annealing algorithm is used to optimize reentrant scheduling, which is of great significance to the actual production of seamless steel tubes.

Abstract:This study contributes to the hybrid flow shop due to a lack of consideration of characteristics existing in real-world problems. Prior studies are neglecting identical machines, explicit and sequence-dependent setup times, and machine blocking. We propose a hybrid genetic algorithm to solve the problem. Furthermore, we also propose a mixed-integer linear programming formulation. We note a predominance of the mathematical model for small instances, with five jobs and three machines because of how fast there is convergence. The objective function adopted is to minimize the makespan, and relative deviation is used as a performance criterion. Our proposal incorporates two metaheuristics in this process: a genetic algorithm to generate sequences (the flow shop subproblem) and a GRASP to allocate the jobs in the machines (the parallel machines subproblem). The extensive computational experience carried out shows that the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm is a promising procedure to solve large-sized instances.

Abstract:In industry, production is often organized in the form of a hybrid flow shop, and there is great interest in methods and algorithms for optimizing such production processes. While, thus far, methods have focused mostly on optimizing a single selected objective, it is increasingly important to address several objectives simultaneously in order to move from extreme to balanced solutions that consider diverse operational requirements. Following this, we classify and characterize the literature dealing with multi-objective hybrid flow shop scheduling problems (HFSP). We identify those features in metaheuristics that require particular attention during the process of finding Pareto solutions for HFSP (especially coding and decoding schemes, Pareto archives, and Pareto dominance concepts). To promote the evaluation of the suitability of algorithms for solving multi-criteria HFSP, we provide an overview of the test instances used in the literature and propose a systematization of performance criteria for the evaluation of Pareto fronts in order to create clear and consistent conceptual and semantic understanding. Based on this, recommendations are derived that can also be helpful for various multi-objective optimization problems and other application contexts for assessing solution quality as accurately and comparably as possible. Finally, current challenges and possible future research directions are highlighted.

Abstract:In the realm of hybrid flow shop environments, existing literature predominantly overlooks a practical scenario that jobs with different constraints often need to be simultaneously processed. This article addresses a constrained hybrid flow shop scheduling problem (CHFSP) in which certain jobs are bound by a common deadline while other jobs are not. We first propose constructive heuristics to generate initial solutions, completely based on the characteristics of the problem. Additionally, we present a variable-representation discrete artificial bee colony algorithm (VRDABC). The algorithm introduces a novel variable solution representation along with a tailored decoding method, allowing an extensive exploration of the solution space while maintaining a remarkable search speed. By leveraging the distinctive solution representation, we design an insertion operation, a multi-phase evolutionary process, and an efficient phase-transition mechanism, thereby enabling the VRDABC to successfully address this problem. Experimental validations, including algorithmic components analysis and algorithmic comparison, confirm the effectiveness and potential of our approach in producing high-quality solutions. Through the theoretical explanation and experimental analysis, the VRDABC presents an influential contribution to the constrained hybrid flow shop scheduling problem.

Abstract:The hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machine is a typical NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem, and it exists widely in chemical, manufacturing and pharmaceutical industry. In this work, a novel mathematic model for the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machine (HFSPUPM) was proposed. Additionally, an effective hybrid estimation of distribution algorithm was proposed to solve the HFSPUPM, taking advantage of the features in the mathematic model. In the optimization algorithm, a new individual representation method was adopted. The (EDA) structure was used for global search while the teaching learning based optimization (TLBO) strategy was used for local search. Based on the structure of the HFSPUPM, this work presents a series of discrete operations. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid algorithm compared with other algorithms.

Abstract:This paper studies a hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with reentrant jobs from a copper strip cold rolling process in copper plants. The objective is to find a near-optimal job sequences to minimize makespan. A mixed integer program is created to describe this problem. An iterated greedy heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. Practical instances are collected from a Chinese copper plant to test the performance of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can effectively solve the large-scale instances.

Abstract:This paper studies a solar cell industry scheduling problem, which is similar to traditional hybrid flowshop scheduling (HFS). In a typical HFS problem, the allocation of machine resources for each order should be scheduled in advance. However, the challenge in solar cell manufacturing is the number of machines that can be adjusted dynamically to complete the job. An optimal production scheduling model is developed to explore these issues, considering the practical characteristics, such as hybrid flowshop, parallel machine system, dedicated machines, sequence independent job setup times and sequence dependent job setup times. The objective of this model is to minimise the makespan and to decide the processing sequence of the orders/lots in each stage, lot-splitting decisions for the orders and the number of machines used to satisfy the demands in each stage. From the experimental results, lot-splitting has significant effect on shortening the makespan, and the improvement effect is influenced by the processing time and the setup time of orders. Therefore, the threshold point to improve the makespan can be identified. In addition, the model also indicates that more lot-splitting approaches, that is, the flexibility of allocating orders/lots to machines is larger, will result in a better scheduling performance.

Abstract:In the intelligent manufacturing environment, modern industry is developing at a faster pace, and there is an urgent need for reasonable production scheduling to ensure an organized production order and a dependable production guarantee for enterprises. Additionally, production cooperation between enterprises and different branches of enterprises is increasingly common, and distributed manufacturing has become a prevalent production model. In light of these developments, this paper presents the research background and current state of distributed shop scheduling. It summarizes relevant research on issues that align with the new manufacturing model, explores hot topics and concerns and focuses on the classification of distributed parallel machine scheduling, distributed flow shop scheduling, distributed job shop scheduling and distributed assembly shop scheduling. The paper investigates these scheduling problems in terms of single-objective and multi-objective optimization, as well as processing constraints. It also summarizes the relevant optimization algorithms and their limitations. It also provides an overview of research methods and objects, highlighting the development of solution methods and research trends for new problems. Finally, the paper analyzes future research directions in this field.

Abstract:Scheduling is a very complex but important problem. Based on the mathematical model of the scheduling problem, a hybrid algorithm combined the Genetic Algorithm with the Branch and Bound method is proposed to solve the flow shop scheduling problems. As for the randomicity and uncertainty of the GA, the feasible space may be broad and the efficiency is very low. Then, the Branch and Bound method has been applied to find the best lower bound of the possible job sequence. The proposed approach has been prototyped and implemented on different model sizes. Simulation results have shown not only the effectiveness of the algorithm, but also the high searching efficiency.

Abstract:This paper presents a new multi-swarm co-evolutionary algorithm named parallel particle swam optimization (PPSO) on the basis of standard PSO algorithm. Simulated annealing (SA) algorithm was introduced to increase escaping probability from local optima. By reasonably combining the PPSO with SA, we develop a general, fast and easily implemented hybrid optimization algorithm, and apply it to solve flow shop scheduling problem. Comparing results indicate that the new hybrid method is an effective and competitive approach for the flow shop scheduling problem.

Abstract:As an extension of a flow shop scheduling problem, hybrid flow shop scheduling problems (HFSP) have been widely concerned. Their characteristics are that every stage has parallel machines, and every job has more complicated production routes than a classical flow shop problem. Currently, most research about HFSP is based on meta-heuristic algorithms, especially evolutionary algorithms. In this article, we provide new models and solution methods based on constraint programming (CP). According to our experiments conducted on benchmark datasets, CP shows great performance in comparison with other competitive solution methods. It renews the best-found solutions of some benchmark instances. For the instances that cannot be solved exactly, it can provide a high-accuracy feasible solution as an upper bound and a relaxed infeasible solution as a lower bound.

Abstract:This paper addresses the two-stage hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with a batch processor in the first stage and a discrete processor in the second stage. Incompatible job families and limited buffer size are considered. This hybrid flow shop configuration commonly appears in manufacturing operations and the batch processor is always the bottleneck which breaks the symmetry of processing time. Since making a real-time high-quality schedule is challenging, we focus on the automatic design of efficient heuristics for this two-stage problem based on the genetic programming method. We develop a hyper-heuristic approach to automate the tedious trial-and-error design process of heuristics. The goal is to generate efficient dispatching rules for identifying complete schedules to minimize the total completion time. A genetic programming with cooperative co-evolution approach is proposed to evolve the schedule policy automatically. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms both the constructive heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms, and is capable of producing high-quality schedules within seconds.

Abstract:Flexible job shop scheduling problem is a NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem, which has significant applications in the field of workshop scheduling and intelligent manufacturing. Due to its complexity and significance, lots of attention have been paid to tackle this problem. This paper reviews some of the researches on this problem, by presenting and classifying the different criteria, constraints, and solution approaches. The existing solution methods for the flexible job shop scheduling problem in this literature are classified into exact algorithms, heuristics, and meta-heuristics, which are thoroughly reviewed. Particularly, the paper highlights the flexible job shop scheduling problem in the context of dynamic events and preventive maintenance. These dynamic events, such as machine breakdowns and unexpected changes in job requirements, present additional challenges to the scheduling problem. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the development trends in the manufacturing industry and summarizes detailed future research opportunities for the flexible job shop scheduling problem.
