Abstract:In this paper we consider two-machine flow shop scheduling with two agents. Two models are investigated. One is the weighted-sum optimization model and the other is the constrained optimization model. For the former, we show that it is weakly NP-hard and propose a fully polynomial time approximation scheme. For the latter, we also show the problem is weakly NP-hard. With violating the constraint a factor of ε a fully polynomial time approximation scheme is provided.

Abstract:Abstract Integration of production and distribution operations at the scheduling level is one of the most important issues concerned in recent years in supply chain management. We investigate the scheduling problem with job delivery coordination. Concretely, we are given a set of jobs with non-identical processing times and non-identical sizes to be first processed by two parallel-identical machines and then delivered to a common customer by a single vehicle, which has a limited capacity that can carry up to a fixed total size of jobs in one batch. The objective is to minimize the makespan, ie, the time when all the jobs have reached the customer and the delivery vehicle has returned to the machine. The problem does not admit a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio smaller than unless P = NP. By introducing some novel ideas and new methods, including algorithms solving multiple knapsack problem as subprocedures and the rediscovery of the profound nature of the bin-packing algorithm, we propose a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio arbitrary close to . The algorithm, acquired after long-term research containing many earlier related works, is the first algorithm for this kind of problems and its theoretical performance is nearly best.

Abstract:Scheduling is one of the most fundamental combinatorial optimization problems. Online scheduling problems have received considerable research interest in the last three decades.In this paper, we summarize new results on online over list scheduling problems on parallel machines, including problems with an objective to minimize the makespan and the $L^p$ norm of machine loads, semi-online scheduling problems on identical, uniform and hierarchial machines, scheduling with rejection and scheduling with machine costs. We also introduce several new directions of online scheduling.

Abstract:This work is aimed at investigating the online scheduling problem on two parallel and identical machines with a new feature that service requests from various customers are entitled to many different grade of service (GoS) levels, so each job and machine are labelled with the GoS levels, and each job can be processed by a particular machine only when its GoS level is no less than that of the machine. The goal is to minimize the makespan. For non-preemptive version, we propose an optimal online algorithm with competitive ratio 5/3. For preemptive version, we propose an optimal online algorithm with competitive ratio 3/2.

Abstract:We investigate a generalization of classical shop scheduling where n jobs are located at the vertices of a general undirected graph and m machines must travel between the vertices to process the jobs. The aim is to minimize the makespan. For the open shop problem, we develop an O(logmloglogm)-approximation algorithm that significantly improves upon the best known $O(\sqrt{m})$-approximation algorithm. For the flow shop problem, we present an O(m2/3)-approximation algorithm that improves upon the best known $\max\{\frac{m+1}{2},\rho\}$-approximation algorithm, where ρ is the approximation factor for metric TSP.

Abstract:We consider the classical scheduling problem on parallel identical machines to minimize the makespan. There is a long history of study on this problem, focusing on exact and approximation algorithms. It is thus natural to consider whether these algorithms can be further improved in terms of running times. We provide strong lower bounds on the running times of exact and approximation schemes for the classical scheduling problem based on Exponential Time Hypothesis, showing that the best known approximation and exact algorithms are almost the best possible in terms of the running time.

Abstract:We study the problem of on-line scheduling of parallel jobs on two machines. The jobs are parallel in the sense that each of them specifies the number of processors, in this case 1 or 2, required for simultaneous processing. The jobs are presented one by one. Upon receiving a job, we must assign the job to a time slot in the schedule before the next job is presented. No re-assignment is allowed. The goal is to minimize the makespan of the final schedule. There is a straightforward algorithm which achieves a competitive ratio of 2. In this paper we show that no on-line algorithm can have a competitive ratio less than 1+2/3 (≈1.816). We also study two special cases of the problem: (i) Jobs arrive in a non-decreasing order of processing times where we give an optimal algorithm with competitive ratio 3/2; (ii) Jobs arrive in a non-increasing order of processing times where we show that no on-line algorithm has a competitive ratio less than 9/7 and give a greedy algorithm with a competitive ratio 4/3.

Abstract:We address a variant of scheduling problem on two identical machines, where we are given an additional speed-up resource. If a job uses the resource, its processing time may decrease. However, at any time the resource can only be used by at most one job. The objective is to minimize the makespan. For the offline version, we present an FPTAS. For the online version where jobs arrive over list, we propose an online algorithm with competitive ratio of 1.781, and show a lower bound of 1.686 for any online algorithm.

Abstract:We consider bicriteria flowshop scheduling problems with two machines to simultaneously minimize the makespan and the total completion time without any prioritization between the two objectives. An approximation relative to the optimal value of the problem with regard to each objective is adopted, even though a schedule with both objectives reaching their minimum at the same time may not exist. We consider several problems with ordered aspects on processing times such as job ordered and machine ordered. For each problem, we propose a fast -approximation algorithm, where and indicate the approximation ratios with regard to the makespan and the total completion time, respectively, and we explore the problem's inapproximability region that cannot be reached by any algorithm.

Abstract:We study a scheduling environment that finds many real-world manufacturing applications, in which there is a close connection between a hybrid multiprocessor open shop and multiple parallel identical flow shops. In this environment, there is an extended two-stage open shop, where in one stage we have a set of parallel identical machines, while in the other we have a two-machine flow shop. Our objective is to minimize the makespan, that is, the latest completion time of all jobs. We pursue approximation algorithms with provable performance, and we achieve a 2-approximation when the number of parallel identical machines is constant or is part of the input; we also design a 5/3-approximation for the special case where there is only one machine in the multiprocessor stage, which remains weakly NP-hard. Our empirical experiments show that both approximation algorithms perform much better in simulated instances; their average ratios over the proposed lower bound are around 1.5 and 1.2, respectively.

Abstract:We consider the problem of scheduling with renewable speed-up resources. Given m identical machines, n jobs and c different discrete resources, the task is to schedule each job non-preemptively onto one of the machines so as to minimize the makespan. In our problem, a job has its original processing time, which could be reduced by utilizing one of the resources. As resources are different, the amount of the time reduced for each job is different depending on the resource it uses. Once a resource is being used by one job, it can not be used simultaneously by any other job until this job is finished, hence the scheduler should take into account the job-to-machine assignment together with the resource-to-job assignment. We observe that, the classical unrelated machine scheduling problem is actually a special case of our problem when m=c, i.e., the number of resources equals the number of machines. Extending the techniques for the unrelated machine scheduling, we give a 2-approximation algorithm when both m and c are part of the input. We then consider two special cases for the problem, with m or c being a constant, and derive PTASes (Polynomial Time Approximation Schemes) respectively. We also establish the relationship between the two parameters m and c, through which we are able to transform the PTAS for the case when m is constant to the case when c is a constant. The relationship between the two parameters reveals the structure within the problem, and may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We consider the problem of unrelated parallel machine scheduling when the DVS (dynamic voltage scaling) method is used to conserve energy consumption. Given an energy budget, we present (2+epsilon)-approximation algorithms for the makespan minimization problem under two different settings, the continuous model in which speeds are allowed to be any real number in [s(min), s(max)] and the discrete model in which only d distinct speeds are available. We also show how to derive a 2-approximation algorithm if the energy budget is allowed to be slightly exceeded.

Abstract:We introduce a two-machine flow shop scheduling problem under linear constraints (2-FLC problem in short), in which the processing times of two stages of jobs are also decision variables and satisfy a system of linear constraints. The goal is to determine the processing times of each job, and to schedule the jobs to the two-machine flow shop such that the makespan, i.e., the completion time of all the jobs is minimized. This problem can find applications in various areas, such as industrial production and advertising planning. We study the computational complexity and algorithms for the 2-FLC problem. Particularly, we show that although the two-machine flow shop scheduling problem can be solved in polynomial time, the 2-FLC problem is generally NP-hard in the strong sense. Then we consider the design and analysis of algorithms on various settings of the 2-FLC problem. In particular, we propose a polynomial time algorithm for the 2-FLC problem when there is a fixed number of constraints. For the general case, we first propose a simple 2-approximation algorithm, and then design a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a variant two-machine flowshop scheduling problem with the second stage processing times linearly depending on their waiting times. It is a general or a no-wait flowshop problem if the linearly depending factor is zero or infinite respectively, which are both solvable in polynomial time. But this variant problem is strongly NP-hard. We first prove that the optimal value of the variant problem is between the optimal values of the general and no-wait flowshop problems. Then a new heuristic algorithm is proposed based on the optimal no-wait flowshop algorithm. Moreover, some computationally experiments are presented and the results show that the heuristic algorithm performs excellently.

Abstract:This paper considers a two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem, where there are a single machine at the first stage and <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">m</em> parallel machines at the second stage. Each task can be processed by multiple parallel machines at the second stage. The objective is to minimize the makespan. Under some special conditions there is a 3-approximation algorithm for this problem. We propose a new (<span class="InlineEquation">$2+\epsilon $</span>)-approximation algorithm without any condition. For the case where all parallel machines assigned to a task at the second stage must have contiguous addresses, we propose two polynomial time approximation algorithms with approximate ratio less than or equal to 3 by using the existing parallel machine scheduling and strip packing results. Meanwhile two special cases are discussed when the machines number of the second stage is 2 and 3 respectively. Two approximation algorithms with approximation ratios of 2.5 and 2.67 under linear time complexity are proposed. Finally a new lower bound of the model is provided according to the classical Johnson algorithm which improves the previous result.

Abstract:The two-stage flow shop scheduling problem with a batch processing machine and limited waiting time was studied in the paper entitled “Two new approaches for a two-stage hybrid flowshop problem with a single batch processing machine under waiting time constraint” [Chung, T.-P., Sun, H., Liao, C.-J., 2016, Computers & Industrial Engineering, 10.1016/j.cie.2016.11.031]. In the original paper, this problem was formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming model. However, this model is not correct and the blocking time is confusing. In this note, a correct mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed and the confusing blocking time is discussed. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the necessity of correction.

Abstract:We study several two-machine shop scheduling problems, namely flow shop, job shop and open shop scheduling problems under linear constraints. In these problems, the processing times of two stages of jobs are also decision variables and satisfy a system of linear constraints. Abstract:This paper investigates the scheduling problem in a two-stage flexible flow shop, which consists of m stage-1 parallel dedicated machines and a stage-2 bottleneck machine, subject to the condition that nl jobs per type l∈{1, …, m} are processed in a fixed sequence. Four regular performance metrics, including the total completion time, the maximum lateness, the total tardiness, and the number of tardy jobs, are considered. For each considered objective function, we aim to determine an optimal interleaving processing sequence of all jobs coupled with their starting times on the stage-2 bottleneck machine. The problem under study is proved to be strongly NP-hard. An O(m2Πl=1mnl2) dynamic programming algorithm coupled with numerical experiments is presented.
