Abstract:<p>During the thermal treatment of municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) fly ashes (FA), the fusion characteristics, kinetics, and phase transition are the theoretical basis on heavy metals solidification improvement and energy consumption reduction. In this study, the thermal behavior of MSWI FA from two typical furnaces in China, i.e., grate furnaces (GF) and circulating fluidized bed (CFB), are systematically investigated. The results show that FA melting can be divided into five stages but with different positions and areas of weightlessness peaks between two types of FA. We identify four kinetic models from which to obtain the apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factor during the melting transition. The apparent activation energy of GF FA ranges from 466 to 1016.2 kJ/mol, which is generally higher than that of CFB FA (380.1–636.6 kJ/mol). The weightlessness rate of GF FA is approximately three times that of CFB FA because of its high chloride load. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) in FA is prone to react with other compounds to form low-melting-temperature minerals at 1100 °C, such as Ca2MgSi2O7. Therefore, the fusion temperatures of CFB FA with a higher content of SiO2 are about 150 °C lower than that of GF FA, which is consistent with the theory that the fusion temperature of FA is at its lowest when the ratio of basic to acid oxides approaches 1. Finally, SiO2–CaO–Al2O3 ternary phase diagrams, ash fusion temperatures, and several fouling and slagging indices are verified to predict the ash fusion characteristics of MSWI FA.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to explore and analyze the melting characteristics, kinetic behavior and phase transformation of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) during the heat - treatment process. Specifically, the research mainly focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Melting characteristics**: - Research on the differences in melting characteristics of fly ash generated from different types of incinerators (such as the grate furnace (GF) and the circulating fluidized bed (CFB)) during the heat - treatment process. - Analyze the melting temperature of fly ash and its influencing factors, including chemical composition and mineral composition. 2. **Kinetic behavior**: - Determine the kinetic parameters of fly ash during the melting process, such as the apparent activation energy (\(E_a\)) and the pre - exponential factor (\(A\)), through experimental means such as thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). - Explore the reaction mechanisms of different types of fly ash during the melting process and establish corresponding kinetic models. 3. **Phase transformation process**: - Research the phase transformation behavior of fly ash under different temperature and atmosphere conditions, especially the formation and transformation of silicates and other minerals at high temperatures. - Analyze the complex mineral phases formed during the phase transformation of different types of fly ash, such as the generation of low - melting - point minerals. 4. **Environment and resource utilization**: - Provide a theoretical basis for heavy metal solidification, dioxin decomposition and the production of environmental protection materials through the study of the melting characteristics, kinetics and phase transformation of fly ash, thereby reducing energy consumption and improving the safety and stability of fly ash. - Explore more effective fly ash treatment methods to reduce its negative impact on the environment and realize the efficient utilization of resources. ### Main research objects - **Grate Furnace (GF) fly ash**: Four samples (FA1, FA2, FA3, FA4) from Zhejiang. - **Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) fly ash**: Four samples (FA5, FA6, FA7, FA8) from Shandong and Henan. ### Key findings - **Melting stage**: The melting process of fly ash can be divided into five stages, but the positions and areas of the weight - loss peaks of different types of fly ash are different. - **Kinetic parameters**: The apparent activation energy of GF fly ash is between 466 and 1016.2 kJ/mol, which is higher than that of CFB fly ash (380.1 - 636.6 kJ/mol). The weight - loss rate of GF fly ash is about three times that of CFB fly ash, mainly due to its higher chlorine content. - **Phase - transformation behavior**: SiO₂ in fly ash is easy to react with other compounds to form low - melting - point minerals, such as Ca₂MgSi₂O₇. Due to the higher content of SiO₂, the melting temperature of CFB fly ash is about 150°C lower than that of GF fly ash. - **Melting temperature prediction**: The prediction method of fly ash melting characteristics was verified through the SiO₂ - CaO - Al₂O₃ ternary phase diagram, melting temperature and some slagging indices. ### Conclusion Through the systematic study of the melting characteristics, kinetics and phase transformation of MSWI fly ash, a theoretical basis for the development of efficient fly ash treatment technologies is provided, which is helpful for reducing energy consumption and realizing the resource utilization of fly ash.
