Abstract:In this short note, we give a refinement of our previous work (arXiv:1803.05553) stating that for a projective $3$-fold $X$ of general type with either $p_g(X)\leq 4$ or $p_g(X)\geq 11$, $$\text{vol}(X)\geq \frac{4}{3}p_g(X)-{\frac{10}{3}}.$$

Abstract:We establish the Noether inequality for projective 3-folds. More precisely, we prove that the inequality vol(X)≥43p_g(X)-103 holds for all projective 3-folds X of general type with either p_g(X)≤ 4 or p_g(X)≥ 21, where p_g(X) is the geometric genus and vol(X) is the canonical volume. This inequality is optimal due to known examples found by M. Kobayashi in 1992.

Abstract:If $X$ is a smooth complex projective 3-fold with ample canonical divisor $K$, then the inequality $K^3\ge {2/3}(2p_g-7)$ holds, where $p_g$ denotes the geometric genus. This inequality is nearly sharp. We also give similar, but more complicated, inequalities for general minimal 3-folds of general type. (A noether type of inequality lies, by all means, on the other side of the Miyaoka-Yau inequality from the geographical point of view.)

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth irregular $3$-fold of general type over $\mathbb{C}$. We prove that the optimal Noether inequality $$ \mathrm{vol}(X) \ge \frac{4}{3}p_g(X) $$ holds if $p_g(X) \ge 16$ or if $X$ has a Gorenstein minimal model. Moreover, when $X$ attains the equality and $p_g(X) \ge 16$, its canonical model can be explicitly described.

Abstract:1) We give a 3-dimensional analogue of M. Noether's inequality for canonically polarized threefolds: $K^3\ge 2(2p_g-5)/3$. This inequality is sharp by known examples of M. Kobayashi. 2) Given a minimal 3-fold $X$ of general type with canonical singularities, if $K^3< (3p_g-5)/2$, we show that $X$ must be birationally fibred by curves of genus 2.

Abstract:Nonsingular projective 3-folds $V$ of general type can be naturally classified into 18 families according to the pluricanonical section index${\it\delta}(V):=\text{min}\{m\mid P_{m}\geqslant 2\}$ since $1\leqslant {\it\delta}(V)\leqslant 18$ due to our previous series (I, II). Based on our further classification to 3-folds with ${\it\delta}(V)\geqslant 13$ and an intensive geometrical investigation to those with ${\it\delta}(V)\leqslant 12$, we prove that $\text{Vol}(V)\geqslant \frac{1}{1680}$ and that the pluricanonical map ${\rm\Phi}_{m}$ is birational for all $m\geqslant 61$, which greatly improves known results. An optimal birationality of ${\rm\Phi}_{m}$ for the case ${\it\delta}(V)=2$ is obtained. As an effective application, we study projective 4-folds of general type with $p_{g}\geqslant 2$ in the last section.

We give two applications of an inequality between chi(omega(X)) and p(g)(X):1) Assume that the canonical map Phi(\KX\) is of fiber type. Let F be a smooth model of a generic irreducible component in the general fiber of Phi(\KX\). Abstract:Let $V$ be a complex nonsingular projective 3-fold of general type. We prove $P_{12}(V)>0$ and $P_{24}(V)>1$ (which answers an open problem of J. Kollar and S. Mori). We also prove that the canonical volume has an universal lower bound $\text{Vol}(V) \geq 1/2660$ and that the pluri-canonical map $\Phi_m$ is birational onto its image for all $m\geq 77$. As an application of our method, we prove Fletcher's conjecture on weighted hyper-surface 3-folds with terminal quotient singularities. Another featured result is the optimal lower bound $\text{Vol}(V)\geq {1/420}$ among all those 3-folds $V$ with $\chi({\mathcal O}_V)\leq 1$.

Abstract:By a canonical (resp. terminal) weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold we mean a normal projective one with at worst canonical (resp. terminal) singularities on which the anti-canonical divisor is $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier, nef and big. For a canonical weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold $V$, we show that there exists a terminal weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold $X$, being birational to $V$, such that the $m$-th anti-canonical map defined by $|-mK_{X}|$ is birational for all $m\geq 52$. As an intermediate result, we show that for any $K$-Mori fiber space $Y$ of a canonical weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold, the $m$-th anti-canonical map defined by $|-mK_{Y}|$ is birational for all $m\geq 52$.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a complex nonsingular projective 3-fold of general type. We shall give a detailed classification up to baskets of singularities on a minimal model of $V$. We show that the $m$-canonical map of $V$ is birational for all $m\geq 73$ and that the canonical volume $\text{Vol}(V)\geq {1/2660}$. When $\chi(\mathcal{O}_V)\leq 1$, our result is $\text{Vol}(V)\geq {1/420}$, which is optimal. Other effective results are also included in the paper.

Abstract:This note aims to improve known numerical bounds proved earlier by Chen \cite{PAMS} and Chen-Hacon \cite{Chen-Hacon} and to present some new examples of smooth minimal 3-folds canonically fibred by surfaces (resp. curves) of geometric genus as large as 19 (resp. 13). As an interesting by-product, we present a new class of general type surfaces which are canonically fibred by curves of genus 13.

Abstract:In this paper, we completely classify the canonical threefolds on the Noether line with geometric genus $p_g \ge 11$ by studying their moduli spaces. For every such moduli space, we establish an explicit stratification, estimate the number of its irreducible components and prove the dimension formula. A new and unexpected phenomenon is that the number of irreducible components grows linearly with the geometric genus, while the moduli space of canonical surfaces on the Noether line with any prescribed geometric genus has at most two irreducible components. The key idea in the proof is to relate the canonical threefolds on the Noether line to the simple fibrations in $(1, 2)$-surfaces by proving a conjecture stated by two of the authors in [CP].
