Abstract:Anthropogenic global change has been dramatically influenced terrestrial ecosystem locally and globally during the last century, which become a severe challenge for our natural resource security and socio-economic sustainability. In this chapter, we review the state- of- art understanding on the research filed of Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems. Significant progresses have been achieved in such aspects as model simulations of vegetation dynamics, the macro-scale mechanism underlying biodiversity maintenance, and carbon cycling over the last 15 years. The future research requires better understanding on complex mechanisms of ecosystem dynamics, in order to project their future evolution, which is essential to design the adaptation strategies.

Abstract:Global soil resources under stress The future of humanity is intertwined with the future of Earth's soil resources. Soil provides for agriculture, improves water quality, and buffers greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Yet human activities, including agricultural soil erosion, are rapidly degrading soil faster than it is naturally replenished. At this rate, human security over the next century will be severely threatened by unsustainable soil management practices. Amundson et al. review recent advances in understanding global soil resources, including how carbon stored in soil responds to anthropogenic warming. Abstract:Food security has emerged as one of the most pressing socio-economic and health issues of our time. While the formal processes of international and national governance are short-changing the need for action, an increasing number of professional science-based organisations are rallying to reduce the presence and risks of food insecurity. Examples are the Food in Health Security Network (FIHS) for the Asia Pacific region and the 'Healthy Agriculture, Healthy Nutrition, Healthy People’ initiative of the World Council on Genetics, Nutrition and Fitness for Health. The common denominator is the threat to ecosytems which are intrinsic to food and health systems. To increase their prospects for sustainability and health promotion, coordinated partnerships between agriculture and health as well as other sectors are imperative.

Abstract:Land degradation and pollution caused by population pressure and economic development pose a threat to the sustainability of the Earth’s surface, especially in tropical regions where a long history of chemical weathering has made the surface environment particularly fragile. Systematic baseline geochemical data provide a means of monitoring the state of the environment and identifying problem areas. Regional surveys have already been carried out in some countries, and with increased national and international funding they can be extended to cover the rest of the land surface of the globe. Preparations have been made, under the auspices of the IUGS, for the establishment of just such an integrated global database.

Annual Review of Environment and Resources

Abstract:This review surveys recent evidence on environmental security, bringing diverse approaches to the subject and evidence relating to different environmental issues into conversation with one another. We focus on the five environmental issues most commonly viewed as having conflict or security effects: climate change, water, forests and deforestation, biodiversity and conservation, and mining and industrial pollution. For each issue, we consider evidence along three dimensions: the impacts of environmental variables on violent conflict, the conflict impacts of policy and development interventions vis-à-vis these environmental issues, and their global policy framing and institutionalization. Through this, we draw particular attention to the poverty and/or inconsistency of the evidence relating to environmental variations, which stands in stark contrast to the extensive evidence on policy and development interventions; noting that policymakers have been much more concerned with the former theme than the latter, we call for this imbalance to be addressed.

Global Environmental Change

Abstract:We argue that globalization is a central feature of coupled human–environment systems or, as we call them, socio-ecological systems (SESs). In this article, we focus on the effects of globalization on the resilience, vulnerability, and adaptability of these systems. We begin with a brief discussion of key terms, arguing that socio-economic resilience regularly substitutes for biophysical resilience in SESs with consequences that are often unforeseen. A discussion of several mega-trends (e.g. the rise of mega-cities, the demand for hydrocarbons, the revolution in information technologies) underpins our argument. We then proceed to identify key analytical dimensions of globalization, including rising connectedness, increased speed, spatial stretching, and declining diversity. We show how each of these phenomena can cut both ways in terms of impacts on the resilience and vulnerability of SESs. A particularly important insight flowing from this analysis centers on the reversal of the usual conditions in which large-scale things are slow and durable while small-scale things are fast and ephemeral. The fact that SESs are reflexive can lead either to initiatives aimed at avoiding or mitigating the dangers of globalization or to positive feedback processes that intensify the impacts of globalization. In the concluding section, we argue for sustained empirical research regarding these concerns and make suggestions about ways to enhance the incentives for individual researchers to work on these matters.

Abstract:The recent years saw rapid progress in the research of the impact of climate change on national security in the United States.The article aims to provide a general assessment of the current status and the major characteristics of U.S.research of the impact of climate change on national security and to analyze what experience we can learn from the United States.The author argues that so far in what ways and to what extent climate change would influence U.S.national security has been fully discussed in the United States;and there have also been rich studies of the countermeasures against the threat of climate change to U.S.national security.The major features of current U.S.research are:first,there are some innovations in terms of theories and research methods.Second,the research boasts global vision and strong relevance to U.S.national security.Third,the academic level is improved steadily.Forth,the network of government,academia and think tanks has taken shape in U.S.current research.Currently,the similar research in China is still in its infancy.To promote China's research of the impact of climate change on national security,we should draw some useful experience from the U.S.practices.

Abstract:Global climate change is now one of the biggest challenges facing humankind in the twenty-first century. It is occurring at a time when China's economic rise is leading to substantial environmental problems combined with escalating demands on global resources. Many commentators have warned of impending economic collapse, rising social conflicts, and large-scale public health disasters. 1 It is not only China's modernisation drive that is at stake. The spill-over effects across borders also present security concerns at the regional and global levels. From a global security perspective, the emerging environmental crisis is generally cast in highly negative terms. Limited attention has been given to the question of whether China can adapt. In the case of climate change this is now an urgent task. On the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau climate impacts pose significant security risks for China and the Asia region. The ability to adapt is of critical importance to the future sustainability of these ecosystems as well as the millions of people they serve.

Abstract:Global climate change is often thought of as a steady and approximately predictable physical response to increasing forcings, which then requires commensurate adaptation. But adaptation has practical, cultural and biological limits, and climate change may pose unanticipated global hazards, sudden changes or other surprises–as may societal adaptation and mitigation responses. These poorly known factors could substantially affect the urgency of mitigation as well as adaptation decisions. We outline a strategy for better accommodating these challenges by making climate science more integrative, in order to identify and quantify known and novel physical risks including those arising from interactions with ecosystems and society. We need to do this even–or especially–when they are highly uncertain, and to explore risks and opportunities associated with mitigation and adaptation responses by engaging across disciplines. We argue that upcoming climate assessments need to be more risk‐aware, and suggest ways of achieving this. These strategies improve the chances of anticipating potential surprises and identifying and communicating "safe landing" pathways that meet UN Sustainable Development Goals and guide humanity toward a better future.

Abstract:This study investigates the intersection of urban security and climate resilience, emphasizing the urgent need to prioritize climate adaptation and mitigation in urban planning. Through a comprehensive global survey of 256 experts across various fields, we uncover a consensus on climate change as a major threat to urban areas, affecting water, ecosystem, health, economic, and food security. Despite this recognition, our findings reveal a significant lack of preparedness and confidence in governmental responses. We highlight the interconnectedness of climate and economic factors, underscoring the challenges in decoupling economic growth from fossil fuel dependency. Furthermore, we explore the potential of smart technologies, such as early warning systems, data analytics, and green infrastructure, to enhance urban resilience. Our study advocates for a proactive and comprehensive approach to climate resilience, emphasizing the need for urban planners to incorporate innovative technological solutions that address both climate adaptation and mitigation. By focusing on these distinct yet interconnected strategies, we aim to foster secure, sustainable, and livable urban environments that effectively respond to current and future climate challenges.
