Abstract:Anthropogenic global change has been dramatically influenced terrestrial ecosystem locally and globally during the last century, which become a severe challenge for our natural resource security and socio-economic sustainability. In this chapter, we review the state- of- art understanding on the research filed of Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems. Significant progresses have been achieved in such aspects as model simulations of vegetation dynamics, the macro-scale mechanism underlying biodiversity maintenance, and carbon cycling over the last 15 years. The future research requires better understanding on complex mechanisms of ecosystem dynamics, in order to project their future evolution, which is essential to design the adaptation strategies.

Abstract:Our planet has been undergoing continuous warming since the industrial revolution (1850 CE), such that its mean temperature has risen ∼1°C, and continues to rise to the present day. This is mainly due to human activity, particularly CO2 emissions, resulting in far-reaching and mostly irreversible consequences to the Earth's systems. These include dominant negative changes in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere. Since human influence has now overwhelmingly exceeded natural forces on a globe scale, some Earth scientists have proposed a geological epoch called the “Anthropocene”: a new epoch in the history of our planet, named after the significant influences of humanity on the globe.

Abstract:Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed an interconnected and tightly coupled globalized world in rapid change. This article sets the scientific stage for understanding and responding to such change for global sustainability and resilient societies. We provide a systemic overview of the current situation where people and nature are dynamically intertwined and embedded in the biosphere, placing shocks and extreme events as part of this dynamic; humanity has become the major force in shaping the future of the Earth system as a whole; and the scale and pace of the human dimension have caused climate change, rapid loss of biodiversity, growing inequalities, and loss of resilience to deal with uncertainty and surprise. Taken together, human actions are challenging the biosphere foundation for a prosperous development of civilizations. The Anthropocene reality—of rising system-wide turbulence—calls for transformative change towards sustainable futures. Emerging technologies, social innovations, broader shifts in cultural repertoires, as well as a diverse portfolio of active stewardship of human actions in support of a resilient biosphere are highlighted as essential parts of such transformations.

Abstract:Rockstrom et al. (2009) proposed 'Planetary Boundaries' which is a concept involving Earth system processes that contain environmental boundaries. In the framework, nitrogen (N) cycle, rate of biodiversity loss and climate change have been transgressed by humanity already. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) established the global agenda for sustainable development until 2030 and defined it as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including 17 specified goals with 169 targets. Many goals were related to land use and management changes (LUMC) with carbon (C) and N dynamics among atmosphere-biosphere-pedosphere systems with agricultural activities, such as Zero Hunger (Goal 2), Climate Action (Goal 13), Life on Land (Goal 13) and so on (https://www.undp.org/sustainable-development-goals).

Abstract:Despite great progress in data sharing that has been made in China in recent decades, cultural, policy, and technological challenges have prevented Chinese researchers from maximizing the availability of their data to the global change science community. To achieve full and open exchange and sharing of scientific data, Chinese research funding agencies need to recognize that preservation of, and access to, digital data are central to their mission, and must support these tasks accordingly. The Chinese government also needs to develop better mechanisms, incentives, and rewards, while scientists need to change their behavior and culture to recognize the need to maximize the usefulness of their data to society as well as to other researchers. The Chinese research community and individual researchers should think globally and act personally to promote a paradigm of open, free, and timely data sharing, and to increase the effectiveness of knowledge development.

Abstract:In order to build a more comfortable and better life, humankind has and will continue to damage the environment to an almost irreversible state. Pollution, excessive resource consumption and deliberate environmental damage are just a few of the means by which the human race are upset-ting the environmental state and influencing the climate system. Earth is approaching the critical point, causing the global environment to reach a dangerous situation which we have never seen be-fore [1].The ecosystem is a basic fundamental for hu-man life and society sustainable development. Food, environment and human health is tightly connected as a micro- ecosystem, which are mu-tually dependent and influential, and can be vul-nerable, ineffective and degraded. The ecosystem should be automatically adapted and self- aligning if it was interfered with within the threshold val-ue. Unfortunately, anthropogenic interference to obtain what they need leads to a bad ecosys-tem state, which could be irreversible if trans-gressed, leading to a state less conducive to hu-man development.Industrialization, deforestation and excessive population have caused a big change in global climate. The three main hypotheses of climate change include global warming, global cooling and climatic periodicity. However, global warm-ing has been recognized as the climate change fac-tor most influenced by human activity.CO

Abstract:The world today confronts unprecedented needs for governance having profound implications for human well-being that are difficult - perhaps impossible - to address effectively within the prevailing global political order. This makes it pertinent to ask whether we must assume that the global order will continue during the foreseeable future to take the form of a state-based society as we think about options for addressing these challenges. Treating political orders as complex systems and drawing on our understanding of the dynamics of such systems, the author explores the prospects for a critical transition in the prevailing global political order. Individual sections analyze constitutive pressures, systemic forces, tipping elements, the effects of scale, the defining characteristics of potential successors to the current order, and pathways to a new order. In the process, seeking to make a more general contribution to our understanding of critical transitions in large political orders.

Abstract:Crossing the boundaries in global sustainability The planetary boundary (PB) concept, introduced in 2009, aimed to define the environmental limits within which humanity can safely operate. This approach has proved influential in global sustainability policy development. Steffen et al. provide an updated and extended analysis of the PB framework. Of the original nine proposed boundaries, they identify three (including climate change) that might push the Earth system into a new state if crossed and that also have a pervasive influence on the remaining boundaries.
