Abstract:The phase diagram of a stack of tensionless membranes with nonlinear curvature energy and vertical harmonic interaction is calculated exactly in a large number of dimensions of configuration space. At low temperatures, the system forms a lamellar phase with spontaneously broken translational symmetry in the vertical direction. At a critical temperature, the stack disorders vertically in a melting-like transition. The critical temperature is determined as a function of the interlayer separation l.

Abstract:Smectic-C elastomers can be prepared by crosslinking, e.g., liquid crystal polymers, in the smectic-A phase followed by a cooling through the smectic-A to smectic-C phase transition. This transition from $D_{\infty h}$ to $C_{2h}$ symmetry spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry in the smectic plane as does the transition from a smectic-A to a biaxial smectic phase with $D_{2h}$ symmetry. We study these transitions and the emergent elasticity of the smectic-C and biaxial phases in three related models and show that these phases exhibit soft elasticity analogous to that of nematic elastomers.

Abstract:Abstract: We point out a possible mechanism by which smooth surfaces can become spiky as the constant of curvature stiffness falls below a certain critical value. This happens either in a single first-order transition, or in a sequence of two Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transitions. There may also be additional phases in which the spikes form a hexagonal solid-like array or a disordered liquid-like structure. Our discussion suggests that there exist smooth strings between quarks.

Abstract:A coupled phase-field and hydrodynamic model is introduced to describe a two-phase, weakly compressible smectic (layered phase) in contact with an isotropic fluid of different density. A non-conserved smectic order parameter is coupled to a conserved mass density in order to accommodate non-solenoidal flows near the smectic-isotropic boundary arising from density contrast between the two phases. The model aims to describe morphological transitions in smectic thin films under heat treatment, in which arrays of focal conic defects evolve into conical pyramids and concentric rings through curvature dependent evaporation of smectic layers. The model leads to an extended thermodynamic relation at a curved surface that includes its Gaussian curvature, non-classical stresses at the boundary and flows arising from density gradients. The temporal evolution given by the model conserves the overall mass of the liquid crystal while still allowing for the modulated smectic structure to grow or shrink. A numerical solution of the governing equations reveals that pyramidal domains are sculpted at the center of focal conics upon a temperature increase, which display tangential flows at their surface. Other cases investigated include the possible coalescence of two cylindrical stacks of smectic layers, formation of droplets, and the interactions between focal conic domains through flow.
Internal phase transition induced by external forces in Finsler geometric model for membranes

Abstract:We numerically study an anisotropic shape transformation of membranes under external forces for two-dimensional triangulated surfaces on the basis of Finsler geometry. The Finsler metric is defined by using a vector field, which is the tangential component of a three dimensional unit vector $\sigma$ corresponding to the tilt or some external macromolecules on the surface of disk topology. The sigma model Hamiltonian is assumed for the tangential component of $\sigma$ with the interaction coefficient $\lambda$. For large (small) $\lambda$, the surface becomes oblong (collapsed) at relatively small bending rigidity. For the intermediate $\lambda$, the surface becomes planar. Conversely, fixing the surface with the boundary of area $A$ or with the two point boundaries of distance $L$, we find that the variable $\sigma$ changes from random to aligned state with increasing of $A$ or $L$ for the intermediate region of $\lambda$. This implies that an internal phase transition for $\sigma$ is triggered not only by the thermal fluctuations but also by external mechanical forces. We also find that the frame (string) tension shows the expected scaling behavior with respect to $A/N$ ($L/N$) at the intermediate region of $A$ ($L$) where the $\sigma$ configuration changes between the disordered and ordered phases. Moreover, we find that the string tension $\gamma$ at sufficiently large $\lambda$ is considerably smaller than that at small $\lambda$. This phenomenon resembles the so-called soft-elasticity in the liquid crystal elastomer, which is deformed by small external tensile forces.

Abstract:A spontaneous buckling transition in thin layers of monodomain nematic liquid crystalline gel was observed by polarized light microscopy. The coupling between the orientational ordering of liquid crystalline solvent and the translational ordering of crosslinked polymer backbones inside the nematic gel contributes to such buckling transition. As the nematic mesogens become more ordered when the gel is cooled down from a higher gelation temperature, the polymeric backbones tend to elongate along the direction parallel to the nematic director, which is perpendicular to the rigid glass surfaces in the experimental setup. The shape change of such confined gel sample lead to the spontaneous buckling of polymeric network and the spatial modulation of nematic liquid crystalline director, which is observed as the stripe patterns. The instability analysis was used to explain such transitions, and the relationship between the critical field, stripe's wavelength and temperature can be explained qualitatively by the rubber elasticity theory for liquid crystalline gels.

A critical nematic phase with pseudogap-like behavior in twisted bilayers

Abstract:The crystallographic restriction theorem constrains two-dimensional nematicity to display either Ising ($Z_{2}$) or three-state-Potts ($Z_{3}$) critical behaviors, both of which are dominated by amplitude fluctuations. Here, we use group theory and microscopic modeling to show that this constraint is circumvented in a $30^{\circ}$-twisted hexagonal bilayer due to its emergent quasicrystalline symmetries. We find a critical phase dominated by phase fluctuations of a $Z_{6}$ nematic order parameter and bounded by two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions, which displays only quasi-long-range nematic order. The electronic spectrum in the critical phase displays a thermal pseudogap-like behavior, whose properties depend on the anomalous critical exponent. We also show that an out-of-plane magnetic field induces nematic phase fluctuations that suppress the two BKT transitions via a mechanism analogous to the Hall viscoelastic response of the lattice, giving rise to a putative nematic quantum critical point with emergent continuous symmetry. Finally, we demonstrate that even in the case of an untwisted bilayer, a critical phase emerges when the nematic order parameter changes sign between the two layers, establishing an odd-parity nematic state.

Crumpling of a stiff tethered membrane

Abstract:first-principles numerical simulation model for crumpling of a stiff tethered membrane is introduced. In our model membranes, wrinkles, ridge formation, ridge collapse, as well as the initiation of stiffness divergence, are observed. The ratio of the amplitude and wave length of the wrinkles, and the scaling exponent of the stiffness divergence, are consistent with both theory and experiment. We observe that close to the stiffness divergence there appears a crossover beyond which the elastic behavior of a tethered membrane becomes similar to that of dry granular media. This suggests that ridge formation in membranes and force-chain network formation in granular packings are different manifestations of a single phenomenon.

Surface Effects on Phases Transitions in Smectic Membranes

Abstract:In liquid crystal materials, frustration between competing interactions and thermal fluctuation results in the observation of many different phases (up to 5) in a relatively narrow temperature window (usually about 30K). Identifying the interactions as well as finding out the nature of those interactions that stabilize those phases is a very important and interesting question. In this thesis, we study the interlayer interactions in smectic liquid crystal materials through the study of surface effects on the phase transition in smectic liquid crystal films. Elevated surface interactions in liquid crystal materials result in surface transitions higher in temperature than the bulk transitions. In the free standing film geometry employed in our research, the nature of the surface order (surface transition temperature, number of surface layers, surface critical exponent, etc.) are intrinsic properties of the system. With the surfaces ordered before the rest of the sample, the interior transitions take place under the effective field created by the ordered surfaces. By studying the effects of this surface field on the interior transitions, as well as the interactions between surface layers and interior layers, and the interactions between the surface layers, we are able to obtain valuable information about the nature of the interlayer interactions in smectic liquid crystal materials. Our results also provide new insights into the nature of the surface transitions in the ordered surface region of the phase diagram.
Smectics $A$ and $C$, and the Transition between them, in Uniaxial Disordered Environments

Abstract:We present a theory of the elasticity and fluctuations of the Smectic A and C phases in uniaxial, anisotropic disordered environments, e.g., stretched aerogel. We find that, bizarrely, the low-temperature, lower-symmetry Smectic $C$ phase is less translationally ordered than the high-temperature, higher-symmetry Smectic $A$ phase, with short-ranged "$m=1$ Bragg glass" and algebraic "XY Bragg glass" order, respectively. The $AC$ phase transition belongs to a new universality class, whose fixed points and exponents we find in a $d=5-\epsilon$ expansion. We give very detailed predictions for the very rich light scattering behavior of both phases, and the critical point.

Abstract:Topological defects resulted from boundary constraints in confined liquid crystals have attracted extensive research interests. In this paper, we use numerical simulation to study the phase transition dynamics in the context of stochastic resonance in a bistable liquid crystal device containing defects. This device is made of nematic liquid crystals confined in a shallow square well, and is described by the planar Lebwohl-Lasher model. The stochastic phase transition processes of the system in the presence of a weak oscillating potential is simulated using an over-damped Langevin dynamics. Our simulation results reveal that, depending on system size, the phase transition may follow two distinct pathways: in small systems the pre-existing defect structures at the corners hold until the last stage and there is no newly formed defect point in the bulk during the phase transition, In large systems new defect points appear spontaneously in the bulk and eventually merge with the pre-existing defects at the corners. For both transition pathways stochastic resonance can be observed, but show dramatic difference in their responses to the boundary anchoring strength. In small systems we observe a "sticky-boundary" effect for a certain range of anchoring strength in which the phase transition gets stuck and stochastic resonance becomes de-activated. Our work demonstrates the dynamical interplay among defects, noises, and boundary conditions in confined liquid crystals.

Abstract:The bola-amphiphilic, T-shaped mesogen CT2 has an aromatic, biphenyl core terminated on both ends by hydrophilic groups and a semi-perfluorinated, aliphatic side chain. Upon cooling from the isotropic phase, the fluorinated tails and the polar, rod-like cores nanophase-segregate to form a fluid lamellar phase. At high temperatures, the biphenyl cores are orientationally disordered in two dimensions (2D) in the lamellar planes but on further cooling the cores order orientationally, giving a biaxial lamellar phase with 2D nematic in-plane ordering. At lower temperature, the aromatic and hydrophilic parts of the cores nanosegregate within the lamellae and 2D smectic correlations of the head groups develop. X-ray diffraction shows that this 2D smectic ordering is incompatible with the initial lamellar structure, with both structures becoming short-ranged, resulting in a 3D biaxial nematic phase with macroscopic orthorhombic symmetry featuring strong smectic correlations in two orthogonal spatial dimensions. Freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy enables direct visualization of the resulting short-ranged periodic structures.

Abstract:McMillan liquid crystal model sandwiched between strong homeotropic anchoring walls is studied. Phase transitions between isotropic, nematic, and smectic A phases are investigated for wide ranges of an interaction parameter and of the system thickness. It is confirmed that the anchoring walls induce an increase in transition temperatures, dissappearance of phase transitions, and an appearance of non-spontaneous nematic phase. The similarity between influence of anchoring walls and that of external fields is discussed.

A Modified Landau-de Gennes Theory for Smectic Liquid Crystals: Phase Transitions and Structural Transitions

Abstract:We mathematically model Smectic-A (SmA) phases with a modified Landau-de Gennes (mLdG) model. The orientational order of the SmA phase is described by a tensor-order parameter $\mathbf{Q}$, and the positional order is described by a real scalar $u$, which models the deviation from the average density of liquid crystal molecules. Firstly, we prove the existence and regularity of global minimisers of the mLdG free energy in three-dimensional settings. Then, we analytically prove that the mLdG model can capture the Isotropic-Nematic-Smectic phase transition as a function of temperature, under some assumptions. Further, we explore stable smectic phases on a square domain, with edge length $\lambda$, and tangent boundary conditions. We use heuristic arguments to show that defects repel smectic layers and strong nematic ordering promotes layer formation. We use asymptotic arguments in the $\lambda\to 0$ and $\lambda\to\infty$ limits which reveal the correlation between the number and thickness of smectic layers, the amplitude of density fluctuations with the phenomenological parameters in the mLdG energy. For finite values of $\lambda$, we numerically recover BD-like and D-like stable smectic states observed in experiments. We also study the frustrated mLdG energy landscape and give numerical examples of transition pathways between distinct mLdG energy minimisers.

Abstract:Many factors influence the shapes of living and manufactured membranes. In addition to boundary conditions, surface tension, and curvature, the ordering of particles embedded in or attached to a membrane can strongly influence its equilibrium shape. As a simple model of such ordering, we consider rodlike particles that align to form a so-called nematic phase in the plane of the membrane. We call any sheet with such embedded orientational order a nematic membrane. Nematic membranes can occur in biological cells, liquid crystal films, manufactured materials, and other soft matter systems. By formulating the free energy of nematic films using tensor contractions from differential geometry, we elucidate the elastic terms allowed by symmetry, and indicate differences from hexatic membranes. We find that topological defects in the orientation field can cause the membrane to buckle over a size set by the competition between surface tension and in-plane elasticity. In the absence of bending rigidity the resulting shape is universal, known as a parabolic pseudosphere or a revolved tractrix. This buckling is the two-dimensional analog of the bent cores of line defects that are frequently observed in bulk nematic liquid crystals. Bending costs oppose such buckling and modify the shape in a predictable manner. In particular, the anisotropic rigidities of nematic membranes lead to different shapes for aster and vortex defects, in principle enabling measurement of couplings specific to nematic membranes.

Abstract:Elastomers are artificial polymeric materials created for industrial and commercial applications. Depending on their purpose, they are performing in different species and structure modifications. Our studies focus on the systems of elastomers randomly standing-distributed in a smectic $A$ (Sm$A$) liquid crystal. Basing on the suggestion following from the experiment, that at a phase transition from Sm$A$ to nematic phase caused by an increase of a crosslink concentration, such a system survives a percolation transition at low crossilink concentrations, we propose a modeling explaining this phenomena. We approve the three-dimensional Villain spin glass model and apply lattice Monte Carlo (MC) techniques on differential forms on a dual lattice, that is an alternative of a replica trick, developed for nematic elastomers in the 3D XY universality. In the results of that we have confirmed a concentration phase transition of percolation nature at a small crosslink concentration ($\sim$ 10 weight %).

Abstract:Phase behaviours of liquid crystals under external fields, conjugate to the nematic order and smectic order, are studied within the framework of mean field approximation developed by McMillan. It is found that phase diagrams, of temperature vs interaction parameter of smectic A order, show several topologically different types caused by the external fields. The influences of the field conjugate to the smectic A phase, which is fictitious field, are precisely discussed.

Abstract:Different liquid crystalline phases with long-range orientational but not positional order, so-called nematic phases, are scarce. It rarely occurs that a new nematic phase is discovered and such event is inevitably accompanied by a great interest. Here, we describe a transition from uniaxial to novel nematic phase characterized by a periodic splay modulation of the director. In this new nematic phase, defect structures not present in the uniaxial nematic are observed, which indicates that the new phase has lower symmetry than the ordinary nematic phase. The phase transition is weakly first order with a significant pretransitional behavior, which manifests as strong splay fluctuations. When approaching the phase transition, the splay nematic constant is unusually low and goes towards zero. Analogously to the transition from the uniaxial nematic to the twist-bend nematic phase, this transition is driven by instability towards splay orientational deformation, resulting in a periodically splayed structure. And, similarly, a Landau-de Gennes type of phenomenological theory can be used to describe the phase transition. The modulated splay phase is biaxial and antiferroelectric.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the isotropic–nematic phase transition for the nematic liquid crystal based on the Landau–de Gennes $\mathbf {Q}$-tensor theory. We justify the limit from the Landau–de Gennes flow to a sharp interface model: in the isotropic region, $\mathbf {Q}\equiv 0$; in the nematic region, the $\mathbf {Q}$-tensor is constrained on the manifolds $\mathcal {N}=\{s_+(\mathbf {n}\otimes \mathbf {n}-\frac{1}{3}\mathbf {I}), \mathbf {n}\in {\mathbb {S}^2}\}$ with $s_+$ a positive constant, and the evolution of alignment vector field $\mathbf {n}$ obeys the harmonic map heat flow, while the interface separating the isotropic and nematic regions evolves by the mean curvature flow. This problem can be viewed as a concrete but representative case of the Rubinstein–Sternberg–Keller problem introduced in Rubinstein et al. (SIAM J. Appl. Math. 49:116–133, 1989; SIAM J. Appl. Math. 49:1722–1733, 1989).

Abstract:Ginzburg-Landau-de Gennes -type covariant theories are extensively used in connection with twist grain boundary (TGB) phases of chiral smectogens. We analyze the stability conditions for the linear, covariant elasticity theory of smectic-C liquid crystals in the context of achiral materials, and predict an equilibrium modulated structure with an oblique wavevector. We suggest that a previous experimental observation of stripes in smectic-C is consistent with the predicted structure.
