Abstract:Here we address two nonequilibrium Green's-function approaches for a resonant tunneling structure under a sudden switch of a bias. Our aim is to stress that the time-dependent Keldysh formulation of Jauho, Wingreen, and Meir and the partition-free scheme of Stefanucci and Almbladh are formally equivalent in the ubiquitous case of wide-band limit and noninteracting electrons, if leads and dot are in equilibrium before the time-dependent perturbation. We develop explicit closed formulas of the lesser Green's function and time-dependent current, reminding that the different integration limits preclude a face-to-face comparison of two approaches. This study sheds light on both practices, which are of great interest to the mesoscopic transport community.

Abstract:We present a time-linear scaling method to simulate open and correlated quantum systems out of equilibrium. The method inherits from many-body perturbation theory the possibility to choose selectively the most relevant scattering processes in the dynamics, thereby paving the way to the real-time characterization of correlated ultrafast phenomena in quantum transport. The open system dynamics is described in terms of an embedding correlator from which the time-dependent current can be calculated using the Meir-Wingreen formula. We show how to efficiently implement our approach through a simple grafting into recently proposed time-linear Green's function methods for closed systems. Electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions can be treated on equal footing while preserving all fundametal conservation laws.

Transport in nanostructures: A comparison between nonequilibrium Green functions and density matrices

Abstract:Stationary electric transport in semiconductor nanostructures is studied by the method of nonequilibrium Green functions. In the case of sequential tunneling the results are compared with density matrix theory, providing almost identical results. Nevertheless, the method of Green functions is easier to handle due to the availability of an absolute energy scale. It is demonstrated, that the transport in complicated structures, like quantum cascade lasers, can be described in reasonable agreement with experiment.

Abstract:We present a numerical method in this paper to calculate time-dependent transport properties in mesoscopic systems. This method recursively computes the non-equilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) in the time domain. In the simulations, we utilize a dynamically allocated data structure to compute current densities in response to input signals of any time duration and arbitrary shape. To demonstrate the performance, we apply the proposed method to solve NEGF for time-dependent transport in resonant-tunneling devices (RTD) with a single resonant level. We also investigate how the electrodes’ energy band structure affects the transport properties.

Abstract:A nonequilibrium Green's-function formalism is employed to study the time-dependent transport through resonant-tunneling structures. With this formalism, we derive a time-dependent Landauer-Buttiker formula that guarantees current conservation and gauge invariance. Furthermore, we apply the formula to calculate the response behaviors of the resonant-tunneling structures in the presence of rectangular-pulse and harmonic-modulation fields. The results show that the displacement current plays the role of retarding the tunneling current.

Abstract:We present a perspective of simple models of nonequilibrium directed transport described in terms of a Langevin equation formalism. We consider a Brownian particle under various circumstances and driven by thermal (equilibrium) and non-thermal (active) fluctuations. Three examples of startling behavior are unveiled: giant transport, multiple current reversal and negative mobility.

Abstract:Non-equilibrium transport properties of quantum systems have recently become experimentally accessible in a number of platforms in so-called full-counting experiments that measure transient and steady state non-equilibrium transport dynamics. We show that the effect of the measurement back-action can be exploited to gain access to relevant transport coefficients. This relationship is general, but becomes most conspicuous in the transient dynamics of open quantum systems understrong coupling to non-Markovian environments. In order to explore this regime, a new simulation method for the generation of full counting statistics of non-Markovian, strong-coupling transport settings has been developed that is expressed in terms of a hierarchy of equations of motion. With this tool we gain access to the relevant regime and instantiate our proposal with the study of energetic conductance between two baths connected via a few level system.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum transport of the heat and the charge through a quantum dot coupled to fermionic contacts under the influence of time modulation of temperatures. We derive, within the nonequilibrium Keldysh Green’s function formalism, generic formulas for the charge and heat currents by extending the concept of gravitational field introduced by Luttinger to the dynamically driven system and by identifying the correct form of dynamical contact energy. In linear response regime our formalism is validated from satisfying the Onsager reciprocity relations and demonstrates its utility to reveal nontrivial dynamical effects of the Coulomb interaction on charge and energy relaxations.

Abstract:The rigorous relations between the propagators of transient Schrödinger equations and stationary Green functions are established.Based on the generalized Fourier transform,non-singular transparent boundary condition for transient prob-lem is proposed in a representation of Green functions.The unified framework of Green function method is presented for converting an open boundary problem into a bounded boundary problem.Numerical scheme for time-dependent Schrödinger equation with non-singular transparent boundary condition is designed to simulate the propagations of a free Gaussian wave packet and the resonant tunnelling through double barriers.Numerical results validate the effectiveness of non-singular trans-parent boundary condition.

Abstract:We develop a theory for the nonequilibrium coherent transport through a mesoscopic region, based on the nonequilibrium Green function technique. The theory requires the weak coupling between the central mesoscopic region and the multiple electrodes, but allows arbitrary hopping and interaction in the central region. An equation determining the nonequilibrium distribution in the central interacting region is derived and plays an important role in the theory. The theory is applied to two special cases for demonstrations, revealing the novel effects associated with the combination of phase coherence, Coulomb interaction, and nonequilibrium distribution.

Abstract:Theories describing electrical transport in semiconductor superlattices can essentially be divided in three disjoint categories: i) transport in a miniband; ii) hopping between Wannier-Stark ladders; and iii) sequential tunneling. We present a quantum transport model, based on nonequilibrium Green functions, which, in the appropriate limits, reproduces the three conventional theories, and describes the transport in the previously unaccessible region of the parameter space.

Abstract:Time-dependent quantum transport parameters for graphene nanoribbons (GNR) are calculated by the hierarchical equation of motion (HEOM) method based on the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) theory [Xie et al., J. Chem. Phys. 137, 044113 (2012)]. In this paper, a new initial-state calculation technique is introduced and accelerated by the contour integration for large systems. Some Lorentzian fitting schemes for the self-energy matrices are developed to effectively reduce the number of Lorentzians and maintain good fitting results. With these two developments in HEOM, we have calculated the transient quantum transport parameters in GNR. We find a new type of surface state with delta-function-like density of states in many semi-infinite armchair-type GNR. For zigzag-type GNR, a large overshooting current and slowly decaying transient charge are observed, which is due to the sharp lead spectra and the even-odd effect.

Abstract:Electrons in the active region of a nanostructure constitute an open many-body quantum system, interacting with contacts, phonons, and photons. We review the basic premises of the open system theory, focusing on the common approximations that lead to Markovian and non-Markovian master equations for the reduced statistical operator. We highlight recent progress on the use of master equations in quantum transport, and discuss the limitations and potential new directions of this approach.

Abstract:To explore whether the density-functional theory non-equilibrium Green's function formalism (DFT-NEGF) provides a rigorous framework for quantum transport, we carried out time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of the transient current through two realistic molecular devices, a carbon chain and a benzenediol molecule inbetween two aluminum electrodes. The TDDFT simulations for the steady state current exactly reproduce the results of fully self-consistent DFT-NEGF calculations even beyond linear response. In contrast, sizable differences are found with respect to an equilibrium, non-self-consistent treatment which are related here to differences in the Kohn-Sham and fully interacting susceptibility of the device region. Moreover, earlier analytical conjectures on the equivalence of static and time-dependent approaches in the low bias regime are confirmed with high numerical precision.
Numerical Green's Function Modeling of One-Dimensional Quantum Transport

Abstract:Since the initial development of one-dimensional electron gases (1DEG) two decades ago, there has been intense interest in both the fundamental physics and the potential applications, including quantum computation, of these quantum transport systems. While experimental measurements of 1DEGs reveal the conductance through a system, they do not probe critical other aspects of the underlying physics, including energy eigenstate distribution, magnetic field effects, and band structure. These are better accessed by theoretical modeling, especially modeling of the energy and wavefunction distribution across a system: the local density of states (DOS). In this thesis, a numerical Greens function model of the local DOS in a 1DEG has been developed and implemented. The model uses an iterative method in a discrete lattice to calculate Greens functions by vertical slice across a 1DEG. The numerical model is adaptable to arbitrary surface gate geometry and arbitrary finite magnetic field conditions. When compared with exact analytical results for the local DOS, waveband structure, and real band structure, the model returned very accurate results. A second numerical model was also developed that measured the transmission and reflection coefficients through the quantum system based on the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. The combination of the local DOS model with the transmission coefficients model was applied to two current research topics: antidot behavior and zero-dimensional to one-dimensional tunneling. These models can be further applied to investigate a wide range of quantum transport phenomena.

Abstract:In this review, we detail the commonality of mathematical intuitions that underlie three numerical methods used for the quantitative description of electron swarms propagating in a gas under the effect of externally applied electric and/or magnetic fields. These methods can be linked to the integral transport equation, following a common thread much better known in the theory of neutron transport than in the theory of electron transport. First, we discuss the exact solution of the electron transport problem using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. In reality we will progress much further, showing the interpretative role that the diagrams used in quantum theory and quantum field theory can play in the development of MC. Then, we present two methods, the Monte Carlo Flux and the Propagator method, which have been developed at this moment. The first one is based on a modified MC method, while the second shows the advantage of explicitly applying the mathematical idea of propagator to the transport problem.

Abstract:We formulate a quantum theory of electron waiting time distributions for charge transport in nanostructures described by non-Markovian generalized master equations. We illustrate our method by calculating the waiting time distribution of electron transport through a dissipative double quantum dot, where memory effects are present due to a strongly coupled heat bath. We consider the influence of non-Markovian dephasing on the distribution of electron waiting times and discuss how spectral properties of the heat bath may be detected through measurements of the electron waiting time.
