Abstract:A snapshot is presented of the present status of our knowledge of the TeV gamma-ray universe. Emphasis is put on observations made using the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique. The capabilities of the present generation of telescopes is listed. Progress has been dramatic and several features have been different from what was anticipated. The catalog of sources includes some 78 objects and these are tabulated as extragalactic sources (24), supernovae remnants (11), pulsar wind nebulae (10), binaries (4), miscellaneous (9), diffuse high energy sources (3) and unidentified sources (20). Some comments are made on the factors influencing the past and future development of the field.

The observatory consists of an array of four 12 m-diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes located in southern Arizona, USA. The four-telescope array has been fully operational since September 2007, and over the last two years, VERITAS has been operating with high reliability and sensitivity. It is currently one of the most sensitive VHE observatories. This paper summarizes the status of VERITAS as of October 2009, and describes the detection of several new VHE gamma-ray sources.

Abstract:VERITAS, an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) system for gammma ray astronomy in the GeV TeV range, has recently completed its first season of observations with a full array of four telescopes. A number of astrophysical gamma ray sources have been detected, both galactic and extragalactic, including sources previously unknown at TeV energies. We describe the status of the array and some highlight results, and assess the technical performance, sensitivity and shower reconstruction capabilities.

Abstract:The technique of gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies (VHE: > 100 GeV) with ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes is described, the H.E.S.S. array in Namibia serving as example. Mainly a discussion of the physical principles of the atmospheric Cherenkov technique is given, emphasizing its rapid development during the last decade. The present status is illustrated by two examples: the spectral and morphological characterization in VHE gamma-rays of a shell-type supernova remnant together with its theoretical interpretation, and the results of a survey of the Galactic Plane that shows a large variety of non-thermal sources. The final part is devoted to an overview of the ongoing and future instrumental developments.

Abstract:VERITAS is a state-of-the-art ground-based gamma-ray observatory that operates in the very high-energy (VHE) region of 100 GeV to 50 TeV. The observatory consists of an array of four 12m-diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes located in southern Arizona, USA. The four-telescope array has been fully operational since September 2007, and over the last two years, VERITAS has been operating with high efficiency and with excellent performance. This talk summarizes the recent results from VERITAS, including the discovery of eight new VHE gamma-ray sources.

Abstract:The VERITAS telescope array has been operating smoothly since 2007, and has detected gamma-ray emission above 100 GeV from 40 astrophysical sources. These include blazars, pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, gamma-ray binary systems, a starburst galaxy, a radio galaxy, the Crab pulsar, and gamma-ray sources whose origin remains unidentified. In 2009, the array was reconfigured, greatly improving the sensitivity. We summarize the current status of the observatory, describe some of the scientific highlights since 2009, and outline plans for the future.

Abstract:Gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations at very high energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) can impose tight constraints on some GRB emission models. Many GRB afterglow models predict a VHE component similar to that seen in blazars and plerions, in which the GRB spectral energy distribution has a double-peaked shape extending into the VHE regime. VHE emission coincident with delayed X-ray flare emission has also been predicted. GRB follow-up observations have had high priority in the observing program at the Whipple 10m Gamma-ray Telescope and GRBs will continue to be high priority targets as the next generation observatory, VERITAS, comes on-line. Upper limits on the VHE emission, at late times (> 4 hours), from seven GRBs observed with the Whipple Telescope are reported here.

Abstract:Recent X-ray observations have had a major impact on topics ranging from protostars to cosmology. They have also drawn attention to important and general physical processes that currently limit our understanding of thermal and nonthermal X-ray sources. These include unmeasured atomic astrophysics data (wavelengths, oscillator strengths etc.), basic hydromagnetic processes (e.g. shock structure, reconnection), plasma processes (such as electron-ion equipartition and heat conduction) and radiative transfer (in disks and accretion columns). Progress on these problems will probably come from integrative studies that draw upon observations, throughout the electromagnetic spectrum, of different classes of source. X-ray observations are also giving a new perspective on astronomical subjects, like the nature of galactic nuclei and the evolution of stellar populations. They are contributing to answering central cosmological questions including the measurement of the matter content of the universe, understanding its overall luminosity density, describing its chemical evolution and locating the first luminous objects. X-ray astronomy has a healthy future with several international space missions under construction and in development.

High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena

Abstract:This paper summarizes a presentation given on the occasion of the inauguration of the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-ray Observatory in Puebla, Mexico in March 2015. The inauguration of a new facility for the study of astrophysical gamma-rays provides an excellent opportunity to review the technical evolution and the scientific achievements of VERITAS (the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) since its own inauguration in 2007. HAWC and VERITAS are separated by only 14 degrees in longitude, and so can view much of the same sky at the same time. In combination with other ground-based facilities, and with the instruments onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, VERITAS and HAWC will give an unprecedented view of the gamma-ray sky. We provide an overview of VERITAS, and discuss the complementarity of the two observatories for future gamma-ray observations.

Abstract:The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an array of five imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) to study gamma-ray emission from astrophysical objects in the Southern hemisphere. It is the only hybrid array of IACTs, composed of telescopes with different collection areas and footprints, individually optimised for a specific energy range. Collectively, the array is most sensitive to gamma rays in the range of 100 GeV to 100 TeV. The array has been in operation since 2002 and has been upgraded with new telescopes and cameras multiple times. Recent hardware upgrades and changes in the operational procedures increased the amount of observing time, which is of key importance for time-domain science. H.E.S.S. operations saw record data taking in 2020 and 2021 and we describe the current operations with specific emphasis on system performance, operational processes and workflows, quality control, and (near) real-time extraction of science results. In light of this, we will briefly discuss the early detection of gamma-ray emission from the recurrent nova RS Oph and alert distribution to the astrophysics community.

Abstract:Active galactic nuclei are the dominant sources of gamma rays outside our galaxy and are also candidates for the source of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In addition to being emitters of broad-band non-thermal radiation throughout the electromagnetic spectrum, their emission is highly variable on timescales from years to minutes. Hence, high-cadence monitoring observations are needed to understand their emission mechanisms. The Africa Millimetre Telescope is planned to be the first mm-wave radio telescope on the African continent and one of few in the southern hemisphere. Further to contributing to the global mm-VLBI observations with the Event Horizon Telescope, substantial amounts of observation time will be available for monitoring observations of active galactic nuclei. Here we review the scientific scope of the Africa Millimetre Telescope for monitoring of active galactic nuclei at mm-wavelengths.

Abstract:Since the very beginning of astronomy the location of objects on the sky has been a fundamental observational quantity that has been taken for granted. While precise two dimensional positional information is easy to obtain for observations in the electromagnetic spectrum, the positional accuracy of current and near future gravitational wave detectors is limited to between tens and hundreds of square degrees, which makes it extremely challenging to identify the host galaxies of gravitational wave events or to detect any electromagnetic counterparts. Gravitational wave observations provide information on source properties that is complementary to the information in any associated electromagnetic emission. Observing systems with multiple messengers thus has scientific potential much greater than the sum of its parts. A gravitational wave detector with higher angular resolution would significantly increase the prospects for finding the hosts of gravitational wave sources and triggering a multi-messenger follow-up campaign. An observatory with arcminute precision or better could be realised within the Voyage 2050 programme by creating a large baseline interferometer array in space and would have transformative scientific potential. Precise positional information of standard sirens would enable precision measurements of cosmological parameters and offer new insights on structure formation; a high angular resolution gravitational wave observatory would allow the detection of a stochastic background and resolution of the anisotropies within it; it would also allow the study of accretion processes around black holes; and it would have tremendous potential for tests of modified gravity and the discovery of physics beyond the Standard Model.
TeV Gamma Ray Blazar Monitoring Campaign

Abstract:It is notoriously difficult to organize simultaneous observations from space and from the ground. This is particularly so at GeV-TeV energies where the space observations from all sky telescopes and the ground-based observations (mostly using the atmospheric Cherenkov technique). Because of observing constraints, the latter observations are limited to "snap-shots" of sources with short exposure times. For the past several years the observing program with the Whipple Observatory 10m Gamma-ray Telescope has been devoted to the observation of several bright TeV gamma-ray emitting AGN (including Markarian 421 and Markarian 501) to provide as continuous a record as possible for use in multiwavelength campaigns. The preliminary results of the nightly observations are posted each morning on the public VERITAS Webpage to facilitate comparison with observations at other wavelengths. The telescope is also used as a trigger for VERITAS and other VHE observatories where flaring activity is detected. This paper will present a status update of the current Blazar Monitoring campaign at the telescope and a summary of the most recent results obtained from November 2010 up to April 2011, which contribute to the 14-year data set representing continuous observation of Markarian 421.

Abstract:The Atmospheric Cherenkov Imaging Technique has opened up the gamma-ray spectrumfrom 100 GeV to 50 TeV to astrophysical exploration. The development of the technique is described as are the basic principles underlying its use. The current generation of arrays of telescopes is briefly described and the early results are summarized.
