Abstract:VERITAS is a state-of-the-art ground-based gamma-ray observatory that operates in the very high-energy (VHE) region of 100 GeV to 50 TeV. The observatory consists of an array of four 12m-diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes located in southern Arizona, USA. The four-telescope array has been fully operational since September 2007, and over the last two years, VERITAS has been operating with high efficiency and with excellent performance. This talk summarizes the recent results from VERITAS, including the discovery of eight new VHE gamma-ray sources.

Abstract:The discovery of ultra-high energy gamma-ray sources (detected at energies $\geq$ 100 TeV) thanks to highly sensitive observatories such as the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory, the Tibet AS-gamma Experiment, and the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), marked the beginning of the sub--PeV and PeV era in gamma-ray astrophysics (energies $\sim$ 0.1 to 100 PeV). This new astrophysics is closely related to the emerging topic of PeVatrons, in which HAWC has played a remarkable role and will continue to contribute discoveries and relevant studies thanks to the better data provided by the installed outriggers. In this paper, we present a brief overview of the PeVatrons and the HAWC observatory.

Abstract:The recent detection of 12 gamma-ray Galactic sources well above E > 100 TeV by the LHAASO observatory has been a breakthrough in the context of Cosmic Ray (CR) origin search. Although most of these sources are unidentified, they are often spatially correlated with leptonic accelerators, like pulsar and pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). This dramatically affects the paradigm for which a gamma-ray detection at E > 100 TeV implies the presence of a hadronic accelerator of PeV particles (PeVatron). Moreover, the LHAASO results support the idea that sources other than the standard candidates, Supernova Remnants, can accelerate Galactic CRs. In this context, the good angular resolution of future Cherenkov telescopes, such as the ASTRI Mini-Array and CTA, and the higher sensitivity of future neutrino detectors, such as KM3NeT and IceCube-Gen2, will be of crucial importance. In this brief review, we want to summarize the efforts done up to now, from both theoretical and experimental points of view, to fully understand the LHAASO results in the context of the CR acceleration issue.

Current status and operation of the H.E.S.S. array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes

Abstract:The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an array of five imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) to study gamma-ray emission from astrophysical objects in the Southern hemisphere. It is the only hybrid array of IACTs, composed of telescopes with different collection areas and footprints, individually optimised for a specific energy range. Collectively, the array is most sensitive to gamma rays in the range of 100 GeV to 100 TeV. The array has been in operation since 2002 and has been upgraded with new telescopes and cameras multiple times. Recent hardware upgrades and changes in the operational procedures increased the amount of observing time, which is of key importance for time-domain science. H.E.S.S. operations saw record data taking in 2020 and 2021 and we describe the current operations with specific emphasis on system performance, operational processes and workflows, quality control, and (near) real-time extraction of science results. In light of this, we will briefly discuss the early detection of gamma-ray emission from the recurrent nova RS Oph and alert distribution to the astrophysics community.

Abstract:Cosmic rays (CRs) are charged particles that arrive at Earth isotropically from all directions and interact with the atmosphere. The presence of a spectral knee feature seen in the CR spectrum at $\sim$3 PeV energies is an evidence that astrophysical objects within our Galaxy, which are known as 'Galactic PeVatrons', are capable of accelerating particles to PeV energies. Scientists have been trying to identify the origin of Galactic CRs and have been looking for signatures of Galactic PeVatrons through neutral messengers. Recent advancements in ground-based $\gamma$-ray astronomy have led to the discovery of 12 Galactic sources emitting above 100 TeV energies, and even the first time detection of PeV photons from the direction of the Crab Nebula and the Cygnus region. These groundbreaking discoveries have opened up the field of ultra-high energy (UHE, E$>$100 TeV) $\gamma$-ray astronomy, which can help us explore the high energy frontiers of our Galaxy, hunt for PeVatron sources, and shed light on the century-old problem of the origin of CRs. This review article provides an overview of the current state of the art and potential future directions for the search for Galactic PeVatrons using ground-based $\gamma$-ray observations.

Abstract:The development of the latest generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) over recent decades has led to the discovery of new extreme astrophysical phenomena in the very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray regime. Time-domain and multi-messenger astronomy are inevitably connected to the physics of transient VHE emitters, which show unexpected (and mostly unpredictable) flaring or exploding episodes at different timescales. These transients often share the physical processes responsible for the production of the gamma-ray emission, through cosmic-ray acceleration, magnetic reconnection, jet production and/or outflows, and shocks interactions. In this review, we present an up-to-date overview of the VHE transients field, spanning from novae to supernovae, neutrino counterparts or fast radio bursts, among others, and we outline the expectations for future facilities.

Abstract:Vela X is a region of extended radio emission in the western part of the Vela constellation: one of the nearest pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), and associated with the energetic Vela pulsar (PSR B0833-45). Extended very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray emission (HESS $\mathrm{J0835\mhyphen 455}$) was discovered using the H.E.S.S. experiment in 2004. The VHE $\gamma$-ray emission was found to be coincident with a region of X-ray emission discovered with ${\it ROSAT}$ above 1.5 keV (the so-called \textit{Vela X cocoon}): a filamentary structure extending southwest from the pulsar to the centre of Vela X. A deeper observation of the entire Vela X nebula region, also including larger offsets from the cocoon, has been performed with H.E.S.S. This re-observation was carried out in order to probe the extent of the non-thermal emission from the Vela X region at TeV energies and to investigate its spectral properties. In order to increase the sensitivity to the faint $\gamma$-ray emission from the very extended Vela X region, a multivariate analysis method combining three complementary reconstruction techniques of Cherenkov-shower images is applied for the selection of $\gamma$-ray events. The analysis is performed with the On/Off background method, which estimates the background from separate observations pointing away from Vela X; towards regions free of $\gamma$-ray sources but with comparable observation conditions. The $\gamma$-ray surface brightness over the large Vela X region reveals that the detection of non-thermal VHE $\gamma$-ray emission from the PWN HESS $\mathrm{J0835\mhyphen 455}$ is statistically significant over a region of radius 1.2$^{\circ}$ around the position $\alpha$ = 08$^{\mathrm{h}}$ 35$^{\mathrm{m}}$ 00$^{\mathrm{s}}$, $\delta$ = -45$^{\circ}$ 36$^{\mathrm{\prime}}$ 00$^{\mathrm{\prime}\mathrm{\prime}}$ (J2000).

Abstract:Ultrarelativistic particles called cosmic rays permeate the Milky Way, propagating through the turbulent Galactic magnetic fields. The mechanisms under which these particles increase their energy can be reasonably described by current theories of acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays. There are, however, still many open questions as to how to reach petaelectronvolt (PeV) energies, the maximum energy believed to be attained in our Galaxy, and in which astrophysical sources (dubbed PeVatrons) this ultrahigh-energy acceleration happens. In this Review, we describe the theoretical conditions for plasma acceleration to these energies and the Galactic sources in which these conditions are possible. These theoretical predictions are then compared to the latest experimental results, summarizing the state of the art of our current knowledge of PeVatrons. We finally describe the prospects to keep advancing the understanding of these elusive objects, still unidentified more than 100 years after the discovery of cosmic rays.

Abstract:A hotspot at a position compatible with the BL Lac object 1ES 2322-409 was serendipitously detected with H.E.S.S. during observations performed in 2004 and 2006 on the blazar PKS 2316-423. Additional data on 1ES 2322-409 were taken in 2011 and 2012, leading to a total live-time of 22.3h. Point-like very-high-energy (VHE; E>100GeV) $\gamma$-ray emission is detected from a source centred on the 1ES 2322-409 position, with an excess of 116.7 events at a significance of 6.0$\sigma$. The average VHE $\gamma$-ray spectrum is well described with a power law with a photon index $\Gamma=3.40\pm0.66_{\text{stat}}\pm0.20_{\text{sys}}$ and an integral flux $\Phi(E>200GeV) = (3.11\pm0.71_{\rm stat}\pm0.62_{\rm sys})\times10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}$, which corresponds to 1.1$\%$ of the Crab nebula flux above 200 GeV. Multi-wavelength data obtained with Fermi LAT, Swift XRT and UVOT, RXTE PCA, ATOM, and additional data from WISE, GROND and Catalina, are also used to characterise the broad-band non-thermal emission of 1ES 2322-409. The multi-wavelength behaviour indicates day-scale variability. Swift UVOT and XRT data show strong variability at longer scales. A spectral energy distribution (SED) is built from contemporaneous observations obtained around a high state identified in Swift data. A modelling of the SED is performed with a stationary homogeneous one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) leptonic model. The redshift of the source being unknown, two plausible values were tested for the modelling. A systematic scan of the model parameters space is performed, resulting in a well-constrained combination of values providing a good description of the broad-band behaviour of 1ES 2322-409.

Abstract:The technique of gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies (VHE: > 100 GeV) with ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes is described, the H.E.S.S. array in Namibia serving as example. Mainly a discussion of the physical principles of the atmospheric Cherenkov technique is given, emphasizing its rapid development during the last decade. The present status is illustrated by two examples: the spectral and morphological characterization in VHE gamma-rays of a shell-type supernova remnant together with its theoretical interpretation, and the results of a survey of the Galactic Plane that shows a large variety of non-thermal sources. The final part is devoted to an overview of the ongoing and future instrumental developments.

Abstract:Here we review some of the main issues related to multi-wavelength source identification and characterization, with particular emphasis on the field of X-ray surveys carried out over the last years. This complex and time-consuming process is going to represent one of the main difficulties over the coming years, when significantly larger surveys, both in area and depth, will be carried out with the new generations of space- and ground-based facilities like e.g. eROSITA, WISE, VISTA, Pan-STARRS, and LSST. The Virtual Observatory can offer a reliable way to approach to a new concept of data handling and multi-wavelength source characterization, provided that uniform and rigorous data analyses and extensive quality checks are performed.

Abstract:Very High Energy (VHE) gamma rays constitute one of the main pillars of high energy astrophysics. Gamma rays are produced under extreme relativistic conditions in the Universe. VHE gamma$ rays can be detected indirectly on the ground. Detection of these energetic photons poses several technological challenges. Firstly, even though gamma rays are highly penetrative, the Earth's atmosphere is opaque to them. Secondly, these gamma rays are to be detected against the overwhelming background of cosmic rays. When a VHE gamma ray arrives at the top of the atmosphere it produces charged secondaries. These charged particles produce Cherenkov flashes in the optical band. Even though the first attempts to detect these Cherenkov flashes were made almost 70 years ago, it took several decades of relentless efforts to streamline the technique. Ground-based VHE gamma-ray astronomy has now established itself as one of the crucial branches of conventional high energy astronomy to study the relativistic Universe. In this article we look back and present a historical perspective followed by a discussion on the current status and finally what lies ahead.

Abstract:Here we discuss the latest developments in the debate, where the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray particles come from. In this brief review, we emphasize the predictions that necessarily follow from the various concepts proposed. We discuss both sources and propagation, and spend some space on the by now most conservative model, giant radio galaxies and their hot spots and jets, because it allows more steps in the reasoning to be checked, and is more tightly constrained than any other model. It has survived about forty years of debate already. We summarize the task ahead of us at the end, including the development of new technologies to observe ultra high energy cosmic rays, e.g., with the radio emission of air showers, which may lead to an alternative to the fluorescence detectors with their small duty cycle. Due to HiRes, AUGER, and the plans for EUSO, the future is bright, and the ultra high energy cosmic ray particles may yet allow us to explore new physics.

Abstract:The VERITAS telescope array has been operating smoothly since 2007, and has detected gamma-ray emission above 100 GeV from 40 astrophysical sources. These include blazars, pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, gamma-ray binary systems, a starburst galaxy, a radio galaxy, the Crab pulsar, and gamma-ray sources whose origin remains unidentified. In 2009, the array was reconfigured, greatly improving the sensitivity. We summarize the current status of the observatory, describe some of the scientific highlights since 2009, and outline plans for the future.

Abstract:VERITAS is a ground-based gamma-ray observatory that uses the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique and operates in the very-high energy (VHE) region of the gamma-ray spectrum from 100 GeV to 50 TeV. The observatory consists of an array of four 12 m-diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes located in southern Arizona, USA. The four-telescope array has been fully operational since September 2007, and over the last two years, VERITAS has been operating with high reliability and sensitivity. It is currently one of the most sensitive VHE observatories. This paper summarizes the status of VERITAS as of October 2009, and describes the detection of several new VHE gamma-ray sources.
