Abstract:The data of direct single-photon measurements of the WA98 collaboration in the reaction Pb(158 AGeV) + Pb are analyzed within a thermal model with a minimum number of parameters adjusted to the dilepton data obtained by the CERES and NA50 collaborations in the reactions Pb(158 AGeV) + Au, Pb. The agreement of our model with the WA98 data points to a unique large thermal source emitting electromagnetic radiation observable in both the real and virtual photon channels.

Dilepton production in p+p, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at 200 AGeV

Abstract:We study dilepton production in proton-proton, Cu+Cu as well as in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy 200 GeV per participating nucleon pair within an extended statistical hadronization model. In extension to earlier studies we incorporate transport calculations for an estimate of uncorrelated e+e- -pairs from semileptonic D meson decays. While the invariant mass spectrum of dielectrons is well understood in the p+p collisions, severe discrepancies among different model scenarios based on hadronic degrees of freedom and recent data from the PHENIX Collaboration are found in heavy-ion collisions in the low mass region from 0.15 to 0.6 GeV as well as in the intermediate mass regime from 1.1 to 3 GeV when employing the standard dilepton sources. We investigate, furthermore, the background from correlated dileptons that are not emitted as a pair from a parent hadron but emerge from semileptonic decays of two correlated daughter hadrons. Our calculations suggest a sizeable contribution of such sources in central heavy-ion collisions in the low mass region. However, even the upper limits of our calculations are found to be far below the dilepton mass spectra of the PHENIX Collaboration.

Recent Results on Searches for Pentaquark States from STAR at RHIC

Abstract:We present results on pentaquark searches from nuclear collisions at RHIC with the STAR detector system. An intriguing peak has been observed in the invariant mass distribution of [Formula: see text] from 18.6 Million d + Au collision events at [Formula: see text]. The peak centers at a mass 1528 ± 2 ± 5 MeV/c 2 and the FWHM ~15 MeV/c2 limited by detector responses. The statistical significance of the peak is 4.2σ. Such a state if confirmed is manifestly exotic and implies a family of isospin one states. A weak signal of less statistical significance (~3σ) has been observed in 5.6M Au + Au collision events at 62.4 GeV. Searches in 10.7M Au + Au collision events at 200 GeV yield no significant signal. The Au + Au results neither confirm nor rule out the d + Au observation as a possible state.

Abstract:The coincidence measurements between residues and light particles have been carried out for the reactions 30MeV/u40Ar + 112,124 Sn. The times of flight of the residues are measured by PPACs installed concentrically around the beam at forward angle. The spectra of 3He,α and 6He detected at backward angle in coincidence with residues having different average velocities are analyzed with moving source fit. The average excitation energy of hot nuclei is obtained in the incomplete fusion frame. It is shown that the slope temperature extracted from 3He(6He) spectra is higher (lower) in the neutron-rich system 40Ar + 124Sn than that in the neutron-deficient system 40Ar + 112Sn. For α particle, there is almost no difference between the two reaction systems. The possible causality of these systematic behaviors is discussed from the selectivity of the emitting particles along the decay chain of hot nuclei. The calculation of GEMINI can not repsoduce the experimental observations.

Abstract:We discuss the emission of high momentum lepton pairs (p_T>4 GeV) with low invariant masses (M << p_T) in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC (\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV). The spectra of dileptons produced through interactions of quark and antiquark jets with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) have been calculated. Annihilation and Compton scattering processes, as well as processes benefitting from collinear enhancement, including Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effects, are calculated and convolved with a one dimensional hydrodynamic expansion. The jet-induced contributions are compared to thermal dilepton emission and Drell-Yan processes, and are found to dominate around p_T=4 GeV.

The LCPs were measured by 11 semi-conduct telescopes from very forward angle to backward angle. The times of flight of the residues were measured by PPACs installed concentrically around the beam at forward angle. The excitation energy of the primary hot nuclei was obtained from the velocity of residues in the frame of incomplete fusion model. The single isotope ratios, as function of observing angle and excitation energy have been studied. The ratio of 3He/4He and 6Li/7Li increases with angle while that of 6He/4He and 8Li/7Li decreases. The calculation of statistical theory can not reproduce the curve quantitatively, implying the existence of dynamic effect. Isospin effect of the primary hot nuclei on the single isotopic ratios is demonstrated. However, the temperature extracted from double isotope ratios is target independent.

Abstract:The structure of the pseudorapidity spectra of charged relativistic particles with beta > 0.7 measured in Au+Em and Pb+Em collisions at AGS and SPS energies are analyzed using Fourier transformation method and maximum entropy one. The dependences of these spectra on the number of fast target protons (g-particles) are studied. They show visually some plateau and "shoulder" which are at least three selected points on the distributions. The plateau seems wider in Pb+Em reactions. The existing of plateau is expected for the parton models. The maximum entropy method confirms the existence of the plateau and the shoulder of the distributions.

Abstract:In this contribution we report $e^{+}e^{-}$ spectra with various invariant mass and p$_{T}$ differentials in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV and U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=193 GeV. The structure of the t ($t\approx p^2_{\mathrm{T}}$) distributions of these mass regions will be shown and compared with the same distributions in ultra-peripheral collisions. Additionally, this contribution discusses first measurements of $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ invariant mass spectra from STAR's recently installed Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) in p$+$p and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV.

Abstract:A systematic study of intermediate invariant mass dilepton production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV is performed, using next-to-leading-order (NLO) thermal QCD dilepton emission rates with a multistage dynamical approach which includes event-by-event IP-Glasma initial conditions, relativistic viscous fluid dynamics, and a hadronic afterburner. Considering dilepton yield and anisotropic flow, special attention is paid to the out-of-equilibrium aspects, both thermal and chemical, and to the contribution of the Drell-Yan process. The relative contribution of each of those different channels to dilepton observables is calculated and discussed.

Abstract:The lepton pair production rate at finite temperature and at next-to-leading-order (NLO) is calculated for quark-gluon plasma at non-zero baryon density. Yields are obtained using a (3+1)D multicomponent simulation capable of reproducing hadronic observables measured in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan. Spectra of intermediate invariant mass dileptons are compared with measurements from the STAR collaboration. The result of a study where the temperature information obtained from the dilepton spectrum from heavy-ion collisions performed at different energies and centralities is presented.

Abstract:Measurements of femtoscopic correlations in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are used to unravel the space–time structure of the particle-emitting source (the quark–gluon plasma). Recent results indicate that the pion pair source exhibits a power law behavior and can be described well by a Lévy distribution. In this study, Lévy fits were applied to the measured one-dimensional two-pion correlation functions in Au + Au collisions at sNN = 200 GeV. The three extracted source parameters are the Lévy scale parameter, R, which relates to the size of the source; the correlation strength parameter, λ; and the Lévy exponent, α, which characterizes the power law tail of the source. In this paper, we report the current status of the analysis of the extracted Lévy source parameters and present their dependence on average transverse mass, mT, and on centrality.

Analysis of particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions within a two-source statistical model

Abstract:The experimental data on hadron yields and ratios in central lead-lead and gold-gold collisions at 158 AGeV/$c$ (SPS) and $\sqrt{s} = 130$ AGeV (RHIC), respectively, are analysed within a two-source statistical model of an ideal hadron gas. A comparison with the standard thermal model is given. The two sources, which can reach the chemical and thermal equilibrium separately and may have different temperatures, particle and strangeness densities, and other thermodynamic characteristics, represent the expanding system of colliding heavy ions, where the hot central fireball is embedded in a larger but cooler fireball. The volume of the central source increases with rising bombarding energy. Results of the two-source model fit to RHIC experimental data at midrapidity coincide with the results of the one-source thermal model fit, indicating the formation of an extended fireball, which is three times larger than the corresponding core at SPS.

Abstract:The Fourier harmonics, and of negative pions are measured at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of = 17.3 GeV around midrapidity by the CERES/NA45 experiment at the CERN SPS in 0–30% central PbAu collisions with a mean centrality of 5.5%. The analysis is performed in two centrality bins as a function of the transverse momentum from 0.05 GeV/ c to more than 2 GeV/ c . This is the first measurement of the ratio as a function of transverse momentum at SPS energies, that reveals, independently of the hydrodynamic models, hydrodynamic behavior of the formed system. For above 0.5 GeV/ c , the ratio is nearly flat in accordance with the hydrodynamic prediction and as previously observed by the ATLAS and ALICE experiments at the much higher LHC energies. The results are also compared with the SMASH-vHLLE hybrid model predictions, as well as with the SMASH model applied alone.

Systematics of Identified Particle Production in pp, dAu and Au-Au Collisions at RHIC Energies

Abstract:(Abstract is abridged for arXiv.) Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra and freeze-out properties are presented for 200 GeV pp, 200 GeV dAu and 62.4 GeV Au-Au collisions, measured in the STAR-TPC. Evolution of the identified particle spectra ($\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, p and $\overline{p}$) with charged particle multiplicity and event centrality is investigated in detail. Thermal model fits to the measured particle ratios yield a chemical freeze-out temperature $\sim$ 155 MeV in 200 GeV pp, 200 GeV dAu and 62.4 GeV Au-Au collisions. The extracted chemical freeze-out temperature is close to the critical phase transition temperature predicted by lattice QCD calculations. The kinetic freeze-out temperature extracted from hydrodynamically motivated blast-wave models shows a continuous drop from pp, dAu and peripheral to central Au-Au collisions, while the transverse flow velocity increases from $\sim$ 0.2 in pp to $\sim$ 0.6 in central 200 GeV Au-Au collisions. The kinetic freeze-out parameters in 62.4 GeV and 200 GeV Au-Au collisions seem to be governed only by event multiplicity/centrality. In order to study the effect of resonance decays on the kinetic freeze-out parameters, the data are fitted with the blast-wave model including resonances. It is found that the thus extracted parameters are consistent with those obtained without including resonances, the resonance decays do not modify the spectral shapes significantly in the measured $p_{T}$ region in STAR.

Abstract:The transverse momentum distributions of hadrons in 200GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC are calculated using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code SPheRIO. They are compared with data from STAR and PHOBOS Collaborations. By employing an equation of state which explicitly incorporates the strangeness conservation and introducing strangeness chemical potential into the code, the transverse spectra give a reasonable description of experimental data, except the multiplicities of hyperons.

Abstract:Energy-sum and angular correlation spectra of $e^+e^-$ pairs produced in the $^{3}$H(p,$\gamma$)$^{4}$He nuclear reaction have been studied at $E_p$=510, 610 and 900 keV proton energies. The main features of the spectra can be understood by taking into account the internal and external pair creations following the direct proton radiative capture by $^{3}$H. However, these processes cannot account for the observed peak around 115$^\circ$ in the angular correlation spectra. This anomalous excess of $e^+e^-$ pairs can be described by the creation and subsequent decay of a light particle during the direct capture process. The derived mass of the particle is $m_\mathrm{X}c^2$=16.94$\pm0.12 (stat) \pm 0.21 (syst)$~MeV. According to the mass and branching ratio ($B_x=5.1(13)\times10^{-6}$), this is likely the same X17 particle, which we recently suggested [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 052501 (2016)] for describing the anomaly observed in the decay of $^8$Be.

Progress of Theoretical Physics Supplement

Abstract:First measurements of single particle spectra of pi(+/-), K+ and p in Au-197 + Au collisions at E-kine = 4 GeV per nucleon are presented. Utilizing the 4 A GeV data set from the Forward Spectrometer at the AGS-E866 experiment, transverse mass distributions and rapidity density distributions of pi(+/-), K+ and p near the mid-rapidity region are extracted. Preliminary results are compared with those of the microscopic cascade model calculation, RQMD.
