Abstract:We consider the production of strange particles in Pb-Pb and p-A collisions at the SPS energy reported by the WA97 experiment. We show that the observed enhancement of strange baryon and antibaryon yields in Pb-Pb collisions relative to p-Be and p-Pb can be explained in terms of the statistical model formulated in canonical ensemble with respect to strangeness conservation. The importance and the role of strangeness under saturation is also discussed.

Features of strangeness production in pp and heavy ion collisions

Abstract:Based on the existing experimental data for A-A collisions starting from the AGS energies up to the LHC ones, various systematics related to strange hadrons and anti-hadrons are presented. The ratio between the average transverse momentum and the square root of the total particle multiplicity per unit rapidity and unit transverse overlap area decreases with collision energy for a given centrality or with centrality for a given collision energy, thus supporting the predictions of CGC and percolation based approaches. The dependence on the square root of the total multiplicity per unit rapidity and unit transverse overlap area of the slope and offset extracted from the $\langle p_T\rangle$-particle mass correlation and of the average transverse expansion velocity and kinetic freeze-out temperature parameters obtained from BGBW fits of the pT spectra for strange hadrons is compared to that for pions, kaons and protons. The detailed study of the entropy density dependence of the ratio of strange hadron yields per unit rapidity to the total particle multiplicity per unit rapidity, at different collision energies and centralities, reveals the necessity to study separately strange hadrons and anti-hadrons. The correlation between the ratio of the single- and multi- strange anti-hadron yield per unit rapidity to the total particle multiplicity per unit rapidity and the entropy density is presented as a function of the fireball size. A maximum is evidenced in the similar correlation established for combined and separate species of strange hadrons, at different centralities, in the region where a transition from the baryon-dominated matter to the meson-dominated one takes place. The position of this maximum does not depend on the mass of the corresponding strange hadron. Comparison with pp experimental data reveals another similarity between pp and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC energies.

Abstract:We study as function of energy strangeness created in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We consider statistical hadronization with chemical freeze-out in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium. We obtain strangeness per baryon and per entropy in the energy range $8.75\lessim\sqrt{s_{NN}}\lessim 200 A$ GeV. A baryon density independent evaluation of the kaon to pion ratio is presented.

Abstract:We give an overview of the phenomenology of strangeness enhancement in heavy ion collisions, within the paradigm of the statistical model of particle production. We argue that, while strangeness enhancement data is suggestive of a phase transition, the mechanism triggering enhancement is still elusive. We study the feasibility to constrain this mechanism by determining the scaling variable of strangeness enhancement. We further argue that to test the applicability of the statistical model generally, and to confirm our interpretation of the statistical physics responsible for strangeness enhancement, the scaling of strange particle fluctuations ($K/\pi$ and other particles) w.r.t. yields has to be explored.

Measuring system-size and event-topology dependence of (multi-)strangeness production

Abstract:Measurements of light-flavour particle production in small collision systems at the LHC energies have shown the onset of features that resemble what is typically observed in nucleus-nucleus collisions. New results on the (multi-)strange hadron production in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$=5.02 and 5.36 TeV will be presented. These results are discussed in the context of recent measurements of light-flavour hadron production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 and 13.6 TeV collected by the ALICE experiment in Run 3 of the LHC. In order to understand the strangeness production mechanism, angular correlation between multi-strange and associated identified hadrons are measured and compared with predictions from the string-breaking model PYTHIA8, the cluster hadronisation model HERWIG7, and the core-corona model EPOS-LHC. In addition, the connection of strange hadron production to hard scattering processes and to the underlying event is studied, using di-hadron correlations triggered with the highest-$p_{\mathrm{T}}$ hadron in the event.

Abstract:We propose a model with heterogeneous interacting traders which can explain some of the stylized facts of stock market returns. In the model synchronization effects, which generate large fluctuations in returns, can arise either from an aggregate exogenous shock or, even in its absence, purely from communication and imitation among traders. A trade friction is introduced which, by responding to price movements, creates a feedback mechanism on future trading and generates volatility clustering.

Abstract:New results from NA49 on the production of strangeness in elementary and nuclear reactions are presented. New measurements of charged kaon and pion production have been obtained from 40 AGeV Pb+Pb collisions. The evolution of strange meson yields in nucleus-nucleus interactions is studied as a function of collision energy and system size. Cascade baryon yields are presented for a wide range of hadronic interactions including first measurements in p+p and centrality controlled p+Pb collisions.

Abstract:The RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) program was proposed to study the QCD phase transition. As a sensitive probe to the transition from the hadron gas to the Quark-Gluon Plasma, the particle ratios of strange hadrons are measured to study the properties of nuclear matter. Recently, the production of strange hadrons (KS0, Λ, Ξ, Ω, and ϕ) at mid-rapidity (|y|<0.5) in Au+Au collisions at √SNN = 54.4 GeV were measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. In this paper nuclear modification factor, baryon-to-meson ratio, as well as the overall integrated yields of these strange hadrons at √SNN = 54.4 GeV are presented. In particular, the multi-strange baryon-to-meson ratio N(Ω− + Ω¯+)/[2N(ϕ)] is studied and compared to previous measurements from other BES energies. The strange-hadron-to-pion ratios versus charged hadron multiplicity are also studied and compared to the measurements in heavy-ion collisions at higher energies.
Enhanced strange baryon production in Au+Au collisions compared to p+p at sqrts = 200 GeV

Abstract:We report on the observed differences in production rates of strange and multi-strange baryons in Au+Au collisions at sqrts = 200 GeV compared to pp interactions at the same energy. The strange baryon yields in Au+Au collisions, then scaled down by the number of participating nucleons, are enhanced relative to those measured in pp reactions. The enhancement observed increases with the strangeness content of the baryon, and increases for all strange baryons with collision centrality. The enhancement is qualitatively similar to that observed at lower collision energy sqrts =17.3 GeV. The previous observations are for the bulk production, while at intermediate pT, 1 < pT< 4 GeV/c, the strange baryons even exceed binary scaling from pp yields.

Abstract:The study delves into the production of (multi-)strange hadrons in proton-proton collisions at LHC. Novel observables are proposed to distinguish between EPOS4, based on core-corona separation between a thermalised QGP phase and a vacuum phase with global strangeness conservation, and PYTHIA8.3, based on microscopic interactions between Lund strings that conserve strangeness locally. Correlations between a $\phi$ meson and (multi-)strange hadrons are shown to be an excellent discriminator between the two types of models.

Strangeness Production in $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=3$ GeV Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

Abstract:We report multi-differential measurements of strange hadron production ranging from mid- to target-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at a center-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=3$ GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC. $K^0_S$ meson and $\Lambda$ hyperon yields are measured via their weak decay channels. Collision centrality and rapidity dependences of the transverse momentum spectra and particle ratios are presented. Particle mass and centrality dependence of the average transverse momenta of $\Lambda$ and $K^0_S$ are compared with other strange particles, providing evidence of the development of hadronic rescattering in such collisions. The 4$\pi$ yields of each of these strange hadrons show a consistent centrality dependence. Discussions on radial flow, the strange hadron production mechanism, and properties of the medium created in such collisions are presented together with results from hadronic transport and thermal model calculations.

Abstract:We report on the measurements of strange hadrons (K-+/-, K-S(0), Lambda, Xi, Omega and phi) production at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 7.7 39 GeV from the STAR beam energy scan (BES) program. The collision energy dependence of strange hadron yields are presented. The strange hadron related particle ratios are compared with calculations from statistical and hadronic cascade models. The nuclear modification factors and baryon to meson ratios ((Lambda) over bar /K-S(0) and Omega/phi) are presented. The physics implications for collision dynamics are discussed.

Abstract:We will present a review of selected results on strange baryon production from nucleus-nucleus collisions at the AGS, SPS and RHIC. From the AGS and SPS heavy ion physics program several intriguing aspects: centrality dependence of strangeness production, anti-hyperon yield, hyperon production enhancement and baryon number transport will be highlighted. Our discussion on RHIC results will focus on experimental probes of partonic degree of freedom. Measurements of the elliptic flow v2 and the nuclear modification factor and their distinctive particle dependence are presented as a function of transverse momentum.

Abstract:The E895 experiment at the AGS measured strange particle production and collective behavior in An + Au collisions between 2-8 AGeV. The production of A Baryons: and K-0 Mesons as a function of energy rises smoothly and exhibits a nonlinear impact: parameter dependence. Neutral and positively charged Kaons exhibit a strong anti-flow behavior. A Baryons show a smaller flow signal than protons.The production of strange particles in relativistic heavy, ion collisions is an important probe for high density nuclear matter. Of particular interest are suggestions that strange particle yields can be used to investigate the nuclear equation of state [1] or possible signatures of a change of the in-medium mass [2]. The flow effects of strange particles offer a good probe for their in-medium potentials [3,4].Motivated by these suggestions the E895 collaboration has performed an extensive set of measurements at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. These measurements were performed for Au+Au collisions in a beam energy range of 2-8 AGeV. Charged reaction products were detected in the EOS Time Projection Chamber (TPC) [5] situated in a uniform magnetic field. The TPC provides continuous 3D tracking and particle identification for charged: particles (-1 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 6) with full azimuthal coverage. The method of identification via the rigidity of the track and the energy loss in the TPC gas leads to ambiguities for certain rigidities, thus restricting the identification of charged kaons to low transverse momenta at backward rapidities. This restriction does not affect our neutral strange particles measurements (A Baryons and K-s(0) Mesons) which were reconstructed from their charged decay products by means of a neural network [6-8].
Double Strangeness Ξ− Production As a Probe of Nuclear Equation of State at High Densities

Abstract:Double strangeness Ξ− production in Au+Au collisions at 2, 4, and 6 GeV/nucleon incident beam energies is studied with the pure hadron cascade version of a multi-phase transport model. It is found that due to larger nuclear compression, the model with the soft equation of state (EoS) gives larger yields of both single strangeness (K+ and Λ+Σ0) and double strangeness Ξ−. The sensitivity of the double strangeness Ξ− to the EoS is evidently larger than that of K+ or Λ+Σ0 since the phase-space distribution of produced Ξ− is more compact compared to those of the single strangeness. The larger sensitivity of the yields ratio of Ξ− to the EoS from heavy and light systems is kept compared to that of the single strangeness. The study of Ξ− production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions provides an alternative for the ongoing heavy-ion collision program at facilities worldwide for identifying the EoS at high densities, which is relevant to the investigation of the phase boundary and onset of deconfinement of dense nuclear matter.

Abstract:We discuss medium effects on light cluster production in the QCD phase diagram within a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck (GBU) approach by relating Mott transition lines to those for chemical freeze-out. We find that in heavy-ion collisions at highest energies provided by the LHC light cluster abundances should follow the statistical model because of low baryon densities. At low energies in the nuclear fragmentation region, where the freeze-out interferes with the liquid-gas phase transition, selfenergy and Pauli blocking effects are important. At intermediate energies the HADES, FAIR and NICA experiments can give new information. The GBU approach provides new insights to strange hadron production in this energy domain for explaining the "horn" effects.

Abstract:We present preliminary STAR results on measurements of multi-strange particles $\Xi$, $\Omega$ and their anti-particles from Au+Au and Cu+Cu at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=62.4$ GeV collisions. In order to better understand the role of strangeness enhancement in nucleus-nucleus collisions and its scaling properties with system size, we compare the results from Au+Au and Cu+Cu reactions for different event centrality classes. Strangeness enhancement is discussed in the context of multi-strange to pion ratios. Finally, $\Omega/\phi$ ratio is shown for different systems and energies for a systematic study.

Studying the mechanisms for strange particle production with ALICE at LHC

Abstract:The main goal of the ALICE experiment is to study the physics of strongly interacting matter, focusing on the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The relative production of strange hadrons with respect to non-strange hadrons in heavy-ion collisions was historically considered as one of the signatures of QGP formation. However, the latest results in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions have revealed an increasing trend in the yield ratio of strange hadrons to pions with the charged-particle multiplicity in the event, showing a smooth evolution across different collision systems and energies. We present the new studies which are performed with the aim of better understanding the production mechanisms for strange particles and hence the strangeness enhancement phenomenon in small collision systems. In one of the recent studies, the very forward energy transported by beam remnants (spectators) and detected by the Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC) is used to classify events. The contribution of the effective energy and the particle multiplicity on strangeness production is studied using a multi-differential approach in order to disentangle initial and final state effects. In the second study, the origin of strangeness enhancement with multiplicity in pp has been further investigated by separating the contribution of soft and hard processes, such as jets, to strange hadron production. Techniques involving full jet reconstruction or two-particle correlations have been exploited. The results indicate that the increased relative strangeness production emerges from the growth of the underlying event, being disconnected from initial state properties, and suggest that soft (out-of-jets) processes are the dominant contribution to strange hadron production.
