Abstract:We study the occurrence of a Bose-Einstein transition in a dilute gas with repulsive interactions, starting from temperatures above the transition temperature. The formalism, based on the use of Ursell operators, allows us to evaluate the one-particle density operator with more flexibility than in mean-field theories, since it does not necessarily coincide with that of an ideal gas with adjustable parameters (chemical potential, etc.). In a first step, a simple approximation is used (Ursell-Dyson approximation), which allow us to recover results which are similar to those of the usual mean-field theories. In a second step, a more precise treatment of the correlations and velocity dependence of the populations in the system is elaborated. This introduces new physical effects, such as a marked change of the velocity profile just above the transition: low velocities are more populated than in an ideal gas. A consequence of this distortion is an increase of the critical temperature (at constant density) of the Bose gas, in agreement with those of recent path integral Monte-Carlo calculations for hard spheres.

Abstract:We study the phase separation of a Bose-Einstein condensate system with the conversion of one-species bosonic atoms into molecules via Feshbach resonance. Adopting the Thomas-Fermi approximation, we plot the phase diagrams of the system in two different parameter spaces for different atom-molecule interactions. In the presence of an isotropic trap, the density profiles in spatial space with fixed total number of atoms are also plotted. The clear phase separation in spatial space enables one to determine the location of atoms in the trap, which may be used as a possible experimental probe method.

Abstract:Discovering novel emergent behavior in quantum many-body systems is a main objective of contemporary research. In this paper, we explore the effects on phases and phase transitions of the proximity to a Ruelle-Fisher instability, marking the transition to a collapsed state. To accomplish this, we study by quantum Monte Carlo simulations a two-dimensional system of soft-core bosons interacting through an isotropic finite-ranged attraction, with a parameter $\eta$ describing its strength. If $\eta$ exceeds a characteristic value $\eta_c$, the thermodynamic limit is lost, as the system becomes unstable against collapse. We investigate the phase diagram of the model for $\eta\lesssim\eta_c$, finding -- in addition to a liquid-vapor transition -- a first-order transition between two liquid phases. Upon cooling, the high-density liquid turns superfluid, possibly above the vapor-liquid-liquid triple temperature. As $\eta$ approaches $\eta_c$, the stability region of the high-density liquid is shifted to increasingly higher densities, a behavior at variance with distinguishable quantum or classical particles. Finally, for $\eta$ larger than $\eta_c$ our simulations yield evidence of collapse of the low-temperature fluid for any density; the collapsed system forms a circular cluster whose radius is insensitive to the number of particles.

Abstract:We study the recently introduced self-pinning transition [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 053401 (2022)] in a quasi-one-dimensional two-component quantum gas in the case where the component immersed into the Bose-Einstein condensate has a finite intraspecies interaction strength. As a result of the matter-wave backaction, the fermionization in the limit of infinite intraspecies repulsion occurs via a first-order phase transition to the self-pinned state, which is in contrast to the asymptotic behavior in static trapping potentials. The system also exhibits an additional superfluid state for the immersed component if the interspecies interaction is able to overcome the intraspecies repulsion. We approximate the superfluid state in an analytical model and derive an expression for the phase transition line that coincides with well-known phase separation criteria in binary Bose systems. The full phase diagram of the system is mapped out numerically for the case of two and three atoms in the immersed component.

Abstract:The zero-temperature system of two dilute overlapping Bose-Einstein condensates is unstable against long wavelength excitations if the interaction strength between the distinguishable bosons exceeds the geometric mean of the like-boson interaction strengths. If the condensates attract each other, the instability is similar to the instability of the negative scattering length condensates. If the condensates repel, they separate spatially into condensates of equal pressure. We estimate the boundary size, surface tension and energy of the phase separated condensate system and we discuss the implications for double condensates in atomic traps.

Abstract:For a system at a temperature of absolute zero, all thermal fluctuations are frozen out, while quantum fluctuations prevail. These microscopic quantum fluctuations can induce a macroscopic phase transition in the ground state of a many-body system when the relative strength of two competing energy terms is varied across a critical value. Here we observe such a quantum phase transition in a Bose–Einstein condensate with repulsive interactions, held in a three-dimensional optical lattice potential. As the potential depth of the lattice is increased, a transition is observed from a superfluid to a Mott insulator phase. In the superfluid phase, each atom is spread out over the entire lattice, with long-range phase coherence. But in the insulating phase, exact numbers of atoms are localized at individual lattice sites, with no phase coherence across the lattice; this phase is characterized by a gap in the excitation spectrum. We can induce reversible changes between the two ground states of the system.

Abstract:In a joint experimental and theoretical effort, we report on the formation of a macro-droplet state in an ultracold bosonic gas of erbium atoms with strong dipolar interactions. By precise tuning of the s-wave scattering length below the so-called dipolar length, we observe a smooth crossover of the ground state from a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a dense macro-droplet state of more than $10^4$ atoms. Based on the study of collective excitations and loss features, we quantitative prove that quantum fluctuations stabilize the ultracold gas far beyond the instability threshold imposed by mean-field interactions. Finally, we perform expansion measurements, showing the evolution of the normal BEC towards a three-dimensional self-bound state and show that the interplay between quantum stabilization and three-body losses gives rise to a minimal expansion velocity at a finite scattering length.

Abstract:We analyse the finite-temperature phase diagram of a dipolar Bose Einstein Condensate confined in a tubular geometry. The effect of thermal fluctuations is accounted for by means of Bogoliubov theory employing the local density approximation. In the considered geometry, the superfluid-supersolid phase transition can be of first- and second-order. We discuss how the corresponding transition point is affected by the finite temperature of the system.

Abstract:We investigate the formation of quantum droplets at finite temperature in attractive Bose mixtures subject to a strong transverse harmonic confinement. By means of exact path-integral Monte Carlo methods we determine the equilibrium density of the gas and the liquid as well as the pressure vs volume dependence along isothermal curves. Results for the equation of state and for the gas-liquid coexistence region in quasi-2D configurations are compared with calculations in strictly two dimensions, finding excellent agreement. Within the pure 2D model we explore the relevance of the quantum scale anomaly and we determine the critical interaction strength for the occurrence of the first-order gas to liquid transition. Attractive Solution of Binary Bose Mixtures: Liquid-Vapor Coexistence and Critical Point

Abstract:We study the thermodynamic behavior of attractive binary Bose mixtures using exact path-integral Monte-Carlo methods. Our focus is on the regime of interspecies interactions where the ground state is in a self-bound liquid phase, stabilized by beyond mean-field effects. We calculate the isothermal curves in the pressure vs density plane for different values of the attraction strength and establish the extent of the coexistence region between liquid and vapor using the Maxwell construction. Notably, within the coexistence region, Bose-Einstein condensation occurs in a discontinuous way as the density jumps from the normal gas to the superfluid liquid phase. Furthermore, we determine the critical point where the line of first-order transition ends and investigate the behavior of the density discontinuity in its vicinity. We also point out that the density discontinuity at the transition could be observed in experiments of mixtures in traps.

Abstract:Laser induced transitions between internal states of atoms have been playing a fundamental role to manipulate atomic clouds for many decades. In absence of interactions each atom behaves independently and their coherent quantum dynamics is described by the Rabi model. Since the experimental observation of Bose condensation in dilute gases, static and dynamical properties of multicomponent quantum gases have been extensively investigated. Moreover, at very low temperatures quantum fluctuations crucially affect the equation of state of many-body systems. Here we study the effects of quantum fluctuations on a Rabi-coupled two-component Bose gas of interacting alkali atoms. The divergent zero-point energy of gapless and gapped elementary excitations of the uniform system is properly regularized obtaining a meaningful analytical expression for the beyond-mean-field equation of state. In the case of attractive inter-particle interaction we show that the quantum pressure arising from Gaussian fluctuations can prevent the collapse of the mixture with the creation of a self-bound droplet. We characterize the droplet phase and discover an energetic instability above a critical Rabi frequency provoking the evaporation of the droplet. Finally, we suggest an experiment to observe such quantum droplets using Rabi-coupled internal states of $^{39}$K atoms.

Manifestation of superfluidity in atom-number-imbalanced two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract:Superfluid and dissipative regimes in the dynamics of a two-component quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with unequal atom numbers in the components have been explored. The system supports localized waves of the symbiotic type owing to the same-species repulsion and cross-species attraction. The minority BEC component moves through the majority component and creates excitations. To quantify the emerging excitations we introduce a time-dependent function called disturbance. Through numerical simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with periodic boundary conditions, we have revealed a critical velocity of the localized wave, above which a transition from superfluid to dissipative regime occurs, evidenced by a sharp increase in the disturbance function. The factors responsible for the discrepancy between the actual critical velocity and the speed of sound, expected from theoretical arguments, have been discussed.

Abstract:We consider a trapped Bose gas of $N$ identical bosons in two dimensional space with both an attractive, two-body, scaled interaction and a repulsive, three-body, scaled interaction respectively of the form $-aN^{2\alpha-1} U(N^\alpha \cdot)$ and $bN^{4\beta-2} W(N^\beta \cdot, N^\beta \cdot))$, where $a,b,\alpha,\beta>0$ and $\int_{\mathbb R^2}U(x) {\mathop{}\mathrm{d}} x = 1 = \iint_{\mathbb R^{4}} W(x,y) {\mathop{}\mathrm{d}} x {\mathop{}\mathrm{d}} y$. We derive rigorously the cubic--quintic nonlinear Schrödinger semiclassical theory as the mean-field limit of the model and we investigate the behavior of the system in the double-limit $a = a_N \to a_*$ and $b = b_N \searrow 0$. Moreover, we also consider the homogeneous problem where the trapping potential is removed.

Abstract:Abstract The interplay of quantum statistics and interactions in atomic Bose–Fermi mixtures leads to a phase diagram markedly different from pure fermionic or bosonic systems. However, investigating this phase diagram remains challenging when bosons condense due to the resulting fast interspecies loss. Here we report observations consistent with a phase transition from a polaronic to a molecular phase in a density-matched degenerate Bose–Fermi mixture. The condensate fraction, representing the order parameter of the transition, is depleted by interactions, and the build-up of strong correlations results in the emergence of a molecular Fermi gas. The features of the underlying quantum phase transition represent a new phenomenon complementary to the paradigmatic Bose–Einstein condensate/Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer crossover observed in Fermi systems. By driving the system through the transition, we produce a sample of sodium–potassium molecules exhibiting a large molecule-frame dipole moment in the quantum-degenerate regime.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To determine whether a laryngeal mask airway (LMA) provides a better airway than a facemask in spontaneously breathing anesthetized rabbits, and to test if it can be used for mechanically controlled ventilation. STUDY DESIGN Randomized prospective experimental trial. ANIMALS Sixteen young, healthy, specific pathogen-free Giant Flemish cross Chinchilla rabbits (10 females and 6 males) weighing 4.1 +/- 0.8 kg. METHODS Rabbits were assigned randomly to one of three treatment groups: facemask with spontaneous ventilation (FM-SV; n = 5), LMA with spontaneous ventilation (LMA-SV; n = 5), and LMA with controlled ventilation (LMA-CV; n = 6). In dorsal recumbency, and at 2.3% end-tidal isoflurane concentration, Fé isoflurane, Fi isoflurane, partial pressure of expired isoflurane (PECO(2)), partial pressure of inspired carbon dioxide (PiCO(2)), heart rate, respiratory rate, minute volume, arterial oxygen tensions (PaO(2)), arterial carbon dioxide tensions (PaCO(2)), arterial pH (pH(a)), arterial standard base excess (SBE(a)) values were measured for 120 minutes. Results Two individuals in the FM-SV group had PaCO(2) > 100 mm Hg. One rabbit in the FM-SV had PaO(2) < 80 mm Hg. All FM-SV rabbits showed signs of airway obstruction, and two were withdrawn from the study at 45 and 90 minutes, respectively, because cyanosis was observed. No signs of airway obstruction were observed in either LMA group. Four rabbits in the LMA-CV group developed gastric tympanism, one of which refluxed gastric contents after 110 minutes. There were no differences between FM-SV and LMA-SV in any variable tested. PaCO(2) and PECO(2) were decreased, while PaO(2) and minute volume were increased in the LMA-CV group compared to the LMA-SV group. CONCLUSIONS An LMA provided a better airway than a facemask during spontaneous breathing in rabbits, as the use of a facemask was associated with hypercapnia and low partial pressures of oxygen. Although an LMA can be used for intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV), gastric tympanism may develop, especially at a peak inspiratory pressure of 14 cm H(2)O. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The LMA can be used in rabbits but further work is needed before it is applied routinely.
Self-Consistent Stochastic Finite-Temperature Modelling: Ultracold Bose Gases with Local (s-wave) and Long-Range (Dipolar) Interactions

Abstract:We formulate a generalized self-consistent quantum kinetic theory including thermal fluctuations and stochastic contributions for modelling ultracold Bose gases interacting via a generic long-range interaction. Our generalised equations take the usual form of an effective field theory, separating coherent, low-lying, modes of the system from incoherent, higher-lying, thermal modes. The low-lying modes are described by a stochastic Langevin equation with two explicitly time-dependent collisional terms (corresponding to a dissipative and an energy-correcting contribution) and their corresponding additive and multiplicative stochastic noise terms. By coupling such an equation to an explicitly non-equilibrium gas of incoherent (thermal) particles described by a quantum Boltzmann equation, we thus extend beyond both earlier stochastic approaches (including the full SPGPE) and generalised kinetic models inspired by a two-gas picture (the so-called ZNG formalism) commonly used in the context of short-range interactions, such as those relevant in ultracold alkali atoms. Long-range interactions are further included into our model by the self-consistent addition of a Poisson-like equation for the long-range interaction potential. Our approach leads directly to a self-consistent model for finite-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation in a long-range interacting system within the regime where thermal fluctuations dominate over quantum fluctuations. While such an approach could be of general use for a variety of experimentally-accessible long-range interacting systems, we focus specifically here on the well-studied case of dipolar atomic condensates. In this particular context, we additionally supplement our Keldysh non-equilibrium analysis for fluctuations of the fast (incoherent) modes by a somewhat ad hoc extension of the slow (coherent) modes via the usual route of Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations.
