Abstract:The realization of fermionic superfluidity in a dilute gas of atoms, analogous to superconductivity in metals, is a long-standing goal of ultracold gas research. Beyond being a new example of this fascinating quantum phenomenon, fermionic superfluidity in an atomic gas holds the promise of adjustable interactions and the ability to tune continuously from BCS-type superfluidity to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). This crossover between BCS superfluidity of correlated atom pairs in momentum space and BEC of local pairs has long been of theoretical interest, motivated in part by the discovery of high Tc superconductors. In atomic Fermi gas experiments superfluidity has not yet been demonstrated; however recent experiments have made remarkable progress toward this goal. Starting from an ultracold Fermi gas experimenters have used Feshbach resonances to reversibly create molecules, i.e. composite bosons consisting of local fermion pairs. Furthermore, the experiments have shown that the resulting diatomic molecules can have surprisingly long lifetimes. Here we report the conversion of a Fermi sea of atoms into a molecular BEC. In addition to being the first molecular condensate in thermal equilibrium, this BEC represents one extreme of the predicted BCS-BEC continuum.

Abstract:The internal Josephson oscillations between an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a molecular one are studied for atoms in a square optical lattice subjected to a staggered gauge field. The system is described by a Bose-Hubbard model with complex and anisotropic hopping parameters that are different for each species, i.e., atoms and molecules. When the flux per plaquette for each species is small, the system oscillates between two conventional zero-momentum condensates. However, there is a regime of parameters in which Josephson oscillations between a vortex-carrying atomic condensate (finite momentum BEC) and a conventional zero-momentum molecular condensate may be realized. The experimental observation of the oscillations between these qualitatively distinct BEC's is possible with state-of-the-art Ramsey interference techniques.

Abstract:In this chapter we review our experimental research on cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates, including the properties of the condensate in a tight confinement and across an optical dipole potential, the parametric excitation of cold atoms in a quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap, and the precise manipulation of atoms on a microchip. The behavior of BEC in a trap without free-falling is described in detail, and the sudden shrink of the long axis of the atomic cloud in a cigar-shape trap was observed directly when the condensation occurs. The experimental exploration supports the use of the reduction in the effective sample size as evidence for the onset of the condensate in the case that the trap cannot be switched off completely, just like permanent-magnet traps, or if the time-of-flight method is not convenient in a restricted geometry of the traps. The dynamical evolution of a cold atomic cloud and a condensate passing through a far red-detuned Gaussian beam is studied both numerically and experimentally. Several exotic phenomena, such as the focusing and advancement of atomic clouds, were exhibited. It shows that the BEC can be operated in a controllable manner, and it can be used to simulate a wide variety of quantum phenomena which benefit from the wave-like characteristic of the condensate and flexible manipulation of optical potentials. Furthermore, we discuss the parametric excitation of Rb-87 atoms in a quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap, and measure the dependence of the temperature and the number of the atomic cloud on modulation frequency of the parametric excitation field. It is found that the contribution of atomic collisions to the energy distributions results in a lower temperature of the atomic cloud than the theoretical prediction. Finally, we review our efforts in realizing the first BEC on an atom chip in China and report a systematic study on precisely controlling the behavior of cold atoms on chips, including magnetic trapping, adiabatically compressing, guiding, dynamically splitting and merging. Surface-induced evaporative cooling and parametric resonance induced by the modulation of the current in chip wires are also described.

Abstract:A new extended Dicke model, which includes atom-atom interactions and a driving classical laser field, is established for a Bose-Einstein condensate inside an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity. A feasible experimental setup with a strong atom-field coupling is proposed, where most parameters are easily controllable and thus the predicted second-order superradiant-normal phase transition may be detected by measuring the ground-state atomic population. More intriguingly, a novel second-order phase transition from the superradiant phase to the \textquotedblleft Mott" phase is also revealed. In addition, a rich and exotic phase diagram is presented.

Abstract:Ensembles of particles governed by quantum mechanical laws exhibit intriguing emergent behaviour. Atomic quantum gases 1,2 , liquid helium 3,4 and electrons in quantum materials 5,6,7 all exhibit distinct properties because of their composition and interactions. Quantum degenerate samples of ultracold dipolar molecules promise the realization of new phases of matter and new avenues for quantum simulation 8 and quantum computation 9 . However, rapid losses 10 , even when reduced through collisional shielding techniques 11,12,13 , have so far prevented evaporative cooling to a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC). Here we report on the realization of a BEC of dipolar molecules. By strongly suppressing two- and three-body losses via enhanced collisional shielding, we evaporatively cool sodium–caesium molecules to quantum degeneracy and cross the phase transition to a BEC. The BEC reveals itself by a bimodal distribution when the phase-space density exceeds 1. BECs with a condensate fraction of 60(10)% and a temperature of 6(2) nK are created and found to be stable with a lifetime close to 2 s. This work opens the door to the exploration of dipolar quantum matter in regimes that have been inaccessible so far, promising the creation of exotic dipolar droplets 14 , self-organized crystal phases 15 and dipolar spin liquids in optical lattices 16 .

Abstract:Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of Feshbach molecules in a homogeneous Bose gas is studied at finite temperatures in a single-channel mean-field approach where the Hartree-Fock energy and pairing gap are determined self-consistently. In the molecular-BEC state, the atomic excitation is gapped and the molecular excitation is gapless. The binding energy of Feshbach molecules is shifted from the vacuum value due to many-body effect. When the scattering length $a_s$ of atoms is negative, the system is subject to mechanical collapse due to negative compressibility. The system is stable in most regions with positive scattering lengths. However at low temperatures near the resonance, the molecular-BEC state vanishes, and the coherent mixture of atomic and molecular BEC is subject to mechanical collapse.

Abstract:In a joint experimental and theoretical effort, we report on the formation of a macro-droplet state in an ultracold bosonic gas of erbium atoms with strong dipolar interactions. By precise tuning of the s-wave scattering length below the so-called dipolar length, we observe a smooth crossover of the ground state from a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a dense macro-droplet state of more than $10^4$ atoms. Based on the study of collective excitations and loss features, we quantitative prove that quantum fluctuations stabilize the ultracold gas far beyond the instability threshold imposed by mean-field interactions. Finally, we perform expansion measurements, showing the evolution of the normal BEC towards a three-dimensional self-bound state and show that the interplay between quantum stabilization and three-body losses gives rise to a minimal expansion velocity at a finite scattering length.

Abstract:Bose-Einstein condensation, the macroscopic ground state accumulation of particles with integer spin (bosons) at low temperature and high density, has been observed in several physical systems, including cold atomic gases and solid state physics quasiparticles. However, the most omnipresent Bose gas, blackbody radiation (radiation in thermal equilibrium with the cavity walls) does not show this phase transition, because the chemical potential of photons vanishes and, when the temperature is reduced, photons disappear in the cavity walls. Theoretical works have considered photon number conserving thermalization processes, a prerequisite for Bose-Einstein condensation, using Compton scattering with a gas of thermal electrons, or using photon-photon scattering in a nonlinear resonator configuration. In a recent experiment, we have observed number conserving thermalization of a two-dimensional photon gas in a dye-filled optical microcavity, acting as a 'white-wall' box for photons. Here we report on the observation of a Bose-Einstein condensation of photons in a dye-filled optical microcavity. The cavity mirrors provide both a confining potential and a non-vanishing effective photon mass, making the system formally equivalent to a two-dimensional gas of trapped, massive bosons. By multiple scattering off the dye molecules, the photons thermalize to the temperature of the dye solution (room temperature). Upon increasing the photon density we observe the following signatures for a BEC of photons: Bose-Einstein distributed photon energies with a massively populated ground state mode on top of a broad thermal wing, the phase transition occurring both at the expected value and exhibiting the predicted cavity geometry dependence, and the ground state mode emerging even for a spatially displaced pump spot.

Abstract:Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atoms serve as low-entropy sources for a multitude of quantum-science applications, ranging from quantum simulation and quantum many-body physics to proof-of-principle experiments in quantum metrology and quantum computing. For stability reasons, in the majority of cases the energetically lowest-lying atomic spin state is used. Here we report the Bose-Einstein condensation of caesium atoms in the Zeeman-excited mf = 2 state, realizing a non-ground-state Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interactions and tunable loss. We identify two regions of magnetic field in which the two-body relaxation rate is low enough that condensation is possible. We characterize the phase transition and quantify the loss processes, finding unusually high three-body losses in one of the two regions. Our results open up new possibilities for the mixing of quantum-degenerate gases, for polaron and impurity physics, and in particular for the study of impurity transport in strongly correlated one-dimensional quantum wires.

Abstract:Liquid helium 4 had been the only bosonic superfluid available in experiments for a long time. This situation was changed in 1995, when a new superfluid was born with the realization of the Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold atomic gases. The liquid helium 4 is strongly interacting and has no spin; there is almost no way to change its parameters, such as interaction strength and density. The new superfluid, Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), offers various aspects of advantages over liquid helium. On the one hand, BEC is weakly interacting and has spin degrees of freedom. On the other hand, it is convenient to tune almost all the parameters of a BEC, for example, the kinetic energy by spin-orbit coupling, the density by the external potential, and the interaction by Feshbach resonance. Great efforts have been devoted to studying these new aspects of superfluidity, and the results have greatly enriched our understanding of superfluidity. Here we review these developments by focusing on the stability and critical velocity of various superfluids. The BEC systems considered include a uniform superfluid in free space, a superfluid with its density periodically modulated, a superfluid with artificially engineered spin-orbit coupling, and a superfluid of pure spin current. Due to the weak interaction, these BEC systems can be well described by the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii theory and their superfluidity, in particular critical velocities, can be examined with Landau's theory of superfluid. Experimental proposals to observe these new aspects of superfluidity are discussed.

Abstract:We study the phase separation of a Bose-Einstein condensate system with the conversion of one-species bosonic atoms into molecules via Feshbach resonance. Adopting the Thomas-Fermi approximation, we plot the phase diagrams of the system in two different parameter spaces for different atom-molecule interactions. In the presence of an isotropic trap, the density profiles in spatial space with fixed total number of atoms are also plotted. The clear phase separation in spatial space enables one to determine the location of atoms in the trap, which may be used as a possible experimental probe method.

Abstract:The recent observations of a stable molecular condensate emerging from a condensate of bosonic atoms and related "super-chemical" dynamics have raised an intriguing set of questions. Here we provide a microscopic understanding of this unexpected stability and dynamics in atom-molecule superfluids; we show one essential element behind these phenomena is an extremely narrow Feshbach resonance in $^{133}$Cs at 19.849G. Comparing theory and experiment we demonstrate how this narrow resonance enables the dynamical creation of a large closed-channel molecular fraction superfluid, appearing in the vicinity of unitarity. Theoretically the observed superchemistry (\textit{i.e.}, Bose enhanced reactions of atoms and molecules), is found to be assisted by the formation of Cooper-like pairs of bosonic atoms that have opposite momenta. Importantly, this narrow resonance opens the possibility to explore the quantum critical point of a molecular Bose superfluid and related phenomena which would not be possible near a more typically broad Feshbach resonance.

Abstract:In a trapped atomic Fermi gas, one can tune continuously via a Feshbach resonance the effective pairing interaction between fermionic atoms from very weak to very strong. As a consequence, the low temperature superfluidity evolves continuously from the BCS type in the weak interaction limit to that of Bose-Einstein condensation in the strong pairing limit, exhibiting a BCS-BEC crossover. In this paper, we review recent experimental progress in atomic Fermi gases which elucidates the nature of the superfluid phase as the interaction is continuously tuned. Of particular interest is the intermediate or crossover regime where the $s$-wave scattering length diverges. We will present an intuitive pairing fluctuation theory, and show that this theory is in quantitative agreement with existing experiments in cold atomic Fermi gases.

Abstract:We study the formation of quantum droplets in the mixture of a single-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), and a two-species Fermi superfluid across a wide Feshbach resonance. With repulsive boson-boson and attractive boson-fermion interactions, we show that quantum droplets can be stabilized by attractive fermion-fermion interactions in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schieffer (BCS) side of the resonance, and can also exist in deep BEC regime under weak boson-fermion interactions. We map out the phase diagram for stable droplets with respect to the boson-boson and boson-fermion interactions, and discuss the role of different types of quantum fluctuations in the relevant regions of the BCS-BEC crossover. Our work reveals the impact of fermion pairing on the formation of quantum droplets in Bose-Fermi mixtures, and provides a useful guide for future experiments.

Abstract:Optical control of atomic interactions in a quantum gas is a long-sought goal of cold atom research. Previous experiments have been hindered by short lifetimes and parasitic deformation of the trap potential. Here, we develop and implement a generic scheme for optical control of Feshbach resonance in quantum gases, which yields long condensate lifetimes sufficient to study equilibrium and non-equilibrium physics with negligible parasitic dipole force. We show that fast and local control of interactions leads to intriguing quantum dynamics in new regimes, highlighted by the formation of van der Waals molecules and partial collapse of a Bose condensate.

Abstract:Phase transitions to quantum condensed phases—such as Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC), superfluidity, and superconductivity—have long fascinated scientists, as they bring pure quantum effects to a macroscopic scale. BEC has, for example, famously been demonstrated in dilute atom gas of rubidium atoms at temperatures below 200 nanokelvin. Much effort has been devoted to finding a solid-state system in which BEC can take place. Promising candidate systems are semiconductor microcavities, in which photons are confined and strongly coupled to electronic excitations, leading to the creation of exciton polaritons. These bosonic quasi-particles are 109 times lighter than rubidium atoms, thus theoretically permitting BEC to occur at standard cryogenic temperatures. Here we detail a comprehensive set of experiments giving compelling evidence for BEC of polaritons. Above a critical density, we observe massive occupation of the ground state developing from a polariton gas at thermal equilibrium at 19 K, an increase of temporal coherence, and the build-up of long-range spatial coherence and linear polarization, all of which indicate the spontaneous onset of a macroscopic quantum phase.

Abstract:We systematically study the BCS-BEC crossover and the quantum phase transition in ultracold 6Li and 40K atoms across a wide Feshbach resonance. The background scattering lengths for 6Li and 40K have opposite signs, which lead to very different behaviors for these two types of atoms. For 40K, both the two-body and the many-body calculations show that the system always has two branches of solutions: one corresponds to a deeply bound molecule state; and the other, the one accessed by the current experiments, corresponds to a weakly bound state with population always dominantly in the open channel. For 6Li, there is only a unique solution with the standard crossover from the weakly bound Cooper pairs to the deeply bound molecules as one sweeps the magnetic field through the crossover region. Because of this difference, for the experimentally accessible state of 40K, there is a quantum phase transition at zero temperature from the superfluid to the normal fermi gas at the positive detuning of the magnetic field where the s-wave scattering length passes its zero point. For 6Li, however, the system changes continuously across the zero point of the scattering length. For both types of atoms, we also give detailed comparison between the results from the two-channel and the single-channel model over the whole region of the magnetic field detuning.
