Abstract:We use a recent near-infrared imaging survey of samples of Seyfert and normal galaxies to study the role of bars in the fueling of nuclear activity. The active galaxy sample includes Seyfert galaxies in the Revised Shapely-Ames (RSA) and Sandage & Tammann's (1987) extension to this catalog. The normal galaxies were selected to match the Seyfert sample in Hubble type, redshift, inclination and blue luminosity. All the galaxies in both samples classified as barred in the RSA catalog are also barred in the near-infrared. In addition, ~55% of the galaxies classified as non-barred in the RSA show evidence for bars at 2.1 microns. Overall, ~70% of the galaxies observed show evidence for bar structures. The incidence of bars in the Seyfert and normal galaxies is similar, suggesting Seyfert nuclei do not occur preferentially in barred systems. Furthermore, a slightly higher percentage of normal galaxies have multiple-bar structures.

Nuclear Infrared Spectral Energy Distribution of Type II Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:We present near and mid--IR observations of a sample of Seyfert II galaxies drawn from the $12\mu$m Galaxy Sample. The sample was observed in the J, H, K, L, M and N bands. Galaxy Surface Brightness Profiles are modeled using nuclear, bulge, bar (when necessary) and disk components. To check the reliability of our findings the procedure was tested using {\em Spitzer\/} observations of M\,31. Nuclear Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) are determined for 34 objects, and optical spectra are presented for 38, including analysis of their stellar populations using the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code. Emission line diagnostic-diagrams are used to discriminate between genuine AGN and HII nuclei. Combining our observations with those found in the literature, we have a total of 40 SEDs. It is found that about 40\%\ of the SEDs are characterized by an upturn in the near-IR, which we have quantified as a NIR slope $\alpha < 1$ for an SED characterized as $\lambda f_{\lambda} \propto \lambda^{\alpha}$. Three objects with an HII nucleus and two Seyfert nuclei with strong contamination from a circumnuclear starburst, also show an upturn. For genuine AGN this component could be explained as emission from the accretion disk, a jet, or from a very hot dust component leaking from the central region through a clumpy obscuring structure. The presence of a very compact nuclear starburst as the origin for this NIR excess emission is not favored by our spectroscopic data for these objects.

Unveiling the nature of Seyfert nuclei with 1 - 100 micron spectral energy distributions

Abstract:The infrared is a key wavelength regime for probing the dusty, obscured nuclear regions of active galaxies. We present results from an infrared study of 87 nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes. Combining detailed modelling of the 3 - 100 micron spectral energy distributions with mid-IR spectral diagnostics and near-infrared observations, we find broad support for the unified model of AGNs. The IR emission of Seyfert 1s and 2s is consistent with their having the same type of central engine viewed at a different orientation. The nature of the putative torus is becoming clearer; in particular we present evidence that it is likely a clumpy medium. Mid-infrared correlations between tracers of star formation and AGN ionizing luminosity reveal the starburst-AGN connection implied by the black hole/bulge mass relation, however it is not yet clear if this is due to feedback.

A Spectroscopic Survey of Nearby Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:An optical spectroscopic survey of the nuclei of a magnitude-limited (BT 0 degrees) sample of nearby galaxies was completed to investigate a number of problems related to nuclear activity. Long-slit spectra of exceptionally high quality were obtained using the Hale 5 m telescope at Palomar Observatory for nearby 500 galaxies spanning all morphological types. The data have moderate resolution (2.5-4 A) and cover the wavelength regions 4230-5110 A and 6210-6860 A. After careful subtraction of the stellar light, emission lines with a wide range of intensities and excitation patterns were detected in ~85% of the nuclei. The relative intensity ratios of the emission lines in approximately half the cases (H II nuclei) can be explained by photoionization by young stars, while those in the other half (Seyfert nuclei and LINERs) require excitation by a source of more energetic photons, most likely originating from an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The most important results from the survey include the following. (1) LINERs are extremely common, being present in 1/3 of all galaxies, and they show a clear preference for galaxies of early Hubble types (E thorugh Sb). (2) If all LINERs are powered by nonstellar activity, then nearly half (46%) of all galaxies host active nuclei. (3) At least 10% of all nuclei were found to emit broad H-alpha emission qualitatively similar to the broad-line emission seen in classical Seyfert 1 nuclei and QSOs. This implies that the space density of AGNs in the current epoch is much larger than previously thought. (4) The presence of a bar has a negligible effect on the incidence and strength of nonstellar activity, but it appears to have a pronounced impact on nuclear star formation for some spiral galaxies. Among spirals of early Hubble types (S0-Sbc), bars enhance the probability of nuclear star formation as well as the ratio in which the massive stars form. (5) The spectroscopic properties of H II regions in the nuclear regions of galaxies change systematically with Hubble type. Nuclear H II regions also distinguish themselves from disk H II regions by emitting on average stronger low-ionization emission lines. This behavior can be understood most simply by the effects of higher dust content in galaxy nuclei. To aid in the interpretation of the data, a new set of photoionization models was calculated to predict the behavior of the optical and near-infrared emission-line spectrum under a variety of physical conditions appropriate for Seyfert nuclei and LINERs. Photoionization by a nonstellar ionizing continuum with a low ionization parameter can consistently explain the optical to near-infrared spectroscopic properties of most LINERs. Finally, a multiwavelength (radio to X-ray) analysis was performed on the LINER nucleus of M81. Spectra taken with the Hubble Space Telescope unambiguously detected a featureless, power-law, nonstellar continuum extending from optical to ultraviolet wavelengths. Numerous broad emission lines characteristic of Seyfert 1 nuclei were also found. It was possible to deduce for the first time a number of detailed properties concerning the central engine, the spectral energy distribution, and the regions emitting broad and narrow lines.

Abstract:It is shown that experimentally obtained isotherms of adsorption on solid substrates may be completely reconciled with Lifshitz theory when thermal fluctuations are taken into account. This is achieved within the framework of a solid-on-solid model which is solved numerically. Analysis of the fluctuation contributions observed for hydrogen adsorption onto gold substrates allows to determine the surface tension of the free hydrogen film as a function of film thickness. It is found to decrease sharply for film thicknesses below seven atomic layers.

Starbursts in Barred Spiral Galaxies. III. Definition of a homogeneous sample of Starburst Nucleus Galaxies

Abstract:This paper presents optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of 105 barred Markarian IRAS galaxies. These observations are used to determine the spectral type of emission-line regions in the nucleus and along the bar of the galaxies, in order to define a homogeneous sample of Starburst Nucleus Galaxies (SBNGs). Our selection criteria have been very efficient for selecting star-forming galaxies, since our sample of 221 emission-line regions includes 82% nuclear or extranuclear starbursts. The contamination by Seyferts is low (9%). The remaining galaxies (9%) are objects with ambiguous classification (HII or LINER). The dust content and Halpha luminosity increase towards the nuclei of the galaxies. No significant variation of the electron density is found between nuclear and bar HII regions. However, the mean Halpha luminosity and electron density in the bar are higher than in typical disk HII regions. We investigate different mechanisms for explaining the excess of nitrogen emission observed in our starburst nuclei. There is no evidence for the presence of a weak hidden active galactic nucleus in our starburst galaxies. The cause of this excess is probably a selective enrichment of nitrogen in the nuclei of the galaxies, following a succession of short and intense bursts of star formation. Our sample of SBNGs, located at a mean redshift of 0.015, has moderate Halpha (10^41 erg/s) and far infrared (10^10 Lsun) luminosities. The types are distributed equally among early- and late-type giant spirals with a slight preference for Sbc/Sc types because of their barred morphology. The majority (62%) of SBNGs are isolated with no sign of gravitational interaction. In terms of distance, luminosity and level of interaction, SBNGs are intermediate between HII galaxies and luminous infrared galaxies.

Seyfert galaxies: Nuclear Radio Structure and Unification

Abstract:A radio study of a carefully selected sample of 20 Seyfert galaxies that are matched in orientation-independent parameters, which are measures of intrinsic active galactic nuclei (AGN) power and host galaxy properties is presented to test the predictions of the unified scheme hypothesis. Our sample sources have core flux densities greater than 8 mJy at 5 GHz on arcsec-scales due to the feasibility requirements. These simultaneous pc-scale and kpc-scale radio observations reveal (i) that Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies have equal tendency to show compact radio structures on mas-scales, (ii) the distributions of pc-scale and kpc-scale radio luminosities are similar for both Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies, (iii) no evidence for relativistic beaming in Seyfert galaxies, (iv) similar distributions of source spectral indices in spite of the fact that Seyferts show nuclear radio flux density variations, and (v) the distributions of projected linear size for Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies are not significantly different as would be expected in the unified scheme. The latter could be mainly due to a relatively large spread in the intrinsic sizes. We also find that a starburst alone cannot power these radio sources. Finally, an analysis of the kpc-scale radio properties of the CfA Seyfert galaxy sample shows results consistent with the predictions of the unified scheme.

Abstract:We present an optical spectral atlas of the nuclear region (generally 2'' X 4'', or r less than or similar to 200 pc) of a magnitude-limited survey of 486 nearby galaxies having B-T less than or equal to 12.5 mag and delta > 0 degrees. The double spectrograph on the Hale 5 m telescope yielded simultaneous spectral coverage of similar to 4230-5110 Angstrom and similar to 6210-6860 Angstrom, with a spectral resolution of similar to 4 Angstrom in the blue half and similar to 2.5 Angstrom in the red half. This large, statistically significant survey contains uniformly observed and calibrated moderate-dispersion spectra of exceptionally high quality. The data presented in this paper will be used for various systematic studies of the physical properties of the nuclei of nearby galaxies, with special emphasis on searching for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, or ''dwarf'' Seyferts. Our survey led to the discovery of four relatively obvious but previously uncataloged Seyfert galaxies (NGC 3735, 4395, 4639, and 6951), and many more galactic nuclei showing subtle evidence for Seyfert activity. We have also identified numerous low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs), some of which may be powered by nonstellar processes. Of the many ''starburst'' nuclei in our sample, several exhibit the spectral features of Wolf-Rayet stars.
Hst Observations Of Ngc-4395, The Least Luminous Seyfert-1 Nucleus - Evidence Against The Starburst Hypothesis For Broad-Lined Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:We have used the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain ultraviolet spectra and optical images of the nucleus of NGC 4395, the least luminous and nearest known type 1 Seyfert. The spectrum closely resembles those of normal Seyfert nuclei; narrow emission lines span a wide range of ionization, and the permitted lines have broad wings. If parameterized by a power law (f(nu) is-proportional-to nu(alpha), the essentially featureless continuum has a wavelength-dependent spectral index of -1 to -2. The nucleus is spatially unresolved in the optical images obtained through broad-band filters; we set an upper limit of 0.05'' (approximately 0.7 pc) for the diameter of the continuum source. These data, together with optical and near-infrared spectra that reveal no stellar absorption lines whatsoever, constitute strong evidence against the starburst hypothesis for the origin of the activity. A cluster of stars having the requisite characteristics is highly unlikely, while a single or binary star would require unprecedented properties. The continuum cannot be dominated by a young supernova, given the object's exceedingly low luminosity and lack of optical variability. In addition, the broad components of the permitted emission lines are probably not produced by a supernova remnant embedded in a star cluster. Since the nucleus of NGC 4395 resembles those of other Seyfert 1 galaxies in most respects, we conclude that luminous type 1 Seyferts and QSOs are also powered by nonstellar phenomena, consistent with the standard black hole model.
The Seyfert-Starburst Connection in X-rays. II. Results and Implications

Abstract:We present the results of X-ray imaging and spectroscopic analysis of a sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies that contain starbursts, based on their optical and UV characteristics. These composite galaxies exhibit extended, soft, thermal X-ray emission, which we attribute to their starburst components. Comparing their X-ray and far-infrared properties with ordinary Seyfert and starburst galaxies, we identify the spectral characteristics of their various intrinsic emission sources. The observed far-infrared emission of the composite galaxies may be associated almost exclusively with star formation, rather than the active nucleus. The ratio of the hard X-ray luminosity to the far-infrared and [O III] 5007 luminosity distinguishes most of these composite galaxies from ``pure'' Seyfert 2 galaxies, while their total observed hard X-ray luminosity distinguishes them from ``pure'' starbursts. The hard nuclear X-ray source is generally heavily absorbed (N_H > 10^{23} cm^{-2}) in the composite galaxies. Based on these results, we suggest that the interstellar medium of the nuclear starburst is a significant source of absorption. The majority of the sample are located in groups or are interacting with other galaxies, which may trigger the starburst or allow rapid mass infall to the central black hole, or both. We conclude that starbursts are energetically important in a significant fraction of active galaxies, and starbursts and active galactic nuclei may be part of a common evolutionary sequence.

Abstract:We have completed an optical spectroscopic survey of the nuclear regions (r < 200 pc) of a large sample of nearby galaxies. Although the main objectives of the survey are to search for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei and to quantify their luminosity function, the database can be used for a variety of other purposes. This paper presents measurements of the spectroscopic parameters for the 418 emission-line nuclei, along with a compilation of the global properties of all 486 galaxies in the survey. Stellar absorption generally poses a serious obstacle to obtaining accurate measurement of emission lines in nearby galactic nuclei. We describe a procedure for removing the starlight from the observed spectra in an efficient and objective manner. The main parameters of the emission lines (intensity ratios, fluxes, profile widths, equivalent widths) are measured and tabulated, as are several stellar absorption-line and continuum indices useful for studying the stellar population. Using standard nebular diagnostics, we determine the probable ionization mechanisms of the emission-line objects. The resulting spectral classifications provide extensive information on the demographics of emission-line nuclei in the local universe. This new catalog contains over 200 objects showing spectroscopic evidence for recent star formation and an equally large number of active galactic nuclei, including 46 which show broad H-alpha emission. These samples will serve as the basis of future studies of nuclear activity in nearby galaxies.
A Search for "dwarf" Seyfert Nuclei. Vi. Properties of Emission-Line Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies

Abstract:We use the database from Paper III to quantify the global and nuclear properties of emission-line nuclei in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies. We show that the host galaxies of Seyferts, LINERs, and transition objects share remarkably similar large-scale properties and local environments. The distinguishing traits emerge on nuclear scales. Compared with LINERs, Seyfert nuclei are an order of magnitude more luminous and exhibit higher electron densities and internal extinction. We suggest that Seyfert galaxies possess characteristically more gas-rich circumnuclear regions and hence a more abundant fuel reservoir and plausibly higher accretion rates. The differences between the ionization states of the narrow emission-line regions of Seyferts and LINERs can be partly explained by the differences in their nebular properties. Transition-type objects are consistent with being composite (LINER/H II) systems. With very few exceptions, the stellar population within the central few hundred parsecs of the host galaxies is uniformly old, a finding that presents a serious challenge to starburst or post-starburst models for these objects. Seyferts and LINERs have virtually indistinguishable velocity fields as inferred from their line widths and line asymmetries. Transition nuclei tend to have narrower lines and more ambiguous evidence for line asymmetries. All three classes of objects obey a strong correlation between line width and line luminosity. We argue that the angular momentum content of circumnuclear gas may be an important factor in determining whether a nucleus becomes active. Finally, we discuss some possible complications for the unification model of Seyfert galaxies posed by our observations.
The Disks of Galaxies with Seyfert and Starburst Nuclei: II. Near-Infrared Structural Properties

Abstract:We have derived the near-infrared structural components of a sample of Seyfert and starburst (SBN) host galaxies by fitting the images of Hunt et al. (1997,ApJS,108,229) with a new two-dimensional decomposition algorithm. An analysis of the fitted parameters shows that Seyfert 1 and SBN bulges resemble normal early-type bulges in structure and color, with (J-K)^c_b about 0.1 mag redder than disk (J-K)^c_d. Seyfert 2 bulges, instead, are bluer than normal with (J-K)^c_b ~ (J-K)^c_d. Seyfert disks (especially Type 1), but not those of SBNs, are abnormally bright (in surface brightness), significantly more so than even the brightest normal disks. Seyfert disks are also compact, but similar to those in normal early-type spirals. For a given mass, Seyferts and especially SBNs are abnormally rich in neutral hydrogen, and there is strong, albeit indirect, evidence for lower mass-to-light (M/L) ratios in Seyfert and SBN disks, but for normal M/Ls in their bulges. In Seyferts and SBNs, HI mass fractions and M/L ratios are anticorrelated, and we attribute the high gas mass fractions and low M/Ls in SBNs and several Seyferts to ongoing star formation. Such abundant gas in Seyferts would be expected to inhibit bar formation, which may explain why active galaxies are not always barred.

Abstract:We present sensitive, high resolution observations of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the unusually gas-rich, oval distortion of the Seyfert galaxy NGC4151. The gas dynamics of the oval are found to be consistent with those of a kinematically weak bar, fully confirming previous suggestions for the presence of a fat bar, and, for the first time, individual gaseous features in the bar are spatially resolved. In particular, the two bright regions close to the leading edges of the bar in NGC4151 exhibit kinematics strikingly similar to the signature of bar shocks seen in gas-dynamical simulations, and demonstrate how strong the gaseous response may be even in such a weak bar potential. The residual velocity field, showing deviations from circular motion, is largely consistent with streaming in a bar potential, and, in addition, clearly shows that inflow is concentrated in narrow regions originating in the shocks. This inflow may represent an early stage in the fuelling process of the AGN. The presence and properties of the shocks in NGC4151 indicate that, in addition to the x_1 orbits, the family of x_2 orbits exist and are of significant extent in the bar of NGC4151, with gas streaming from the shocks making the transition between the two families. We therefore suggest that the circumnuclear ellipse, identified optically by previous authors and associated with gas flowing in x_2 orbits, has formed as a natural consequence of the gas flows in the bar without the requirement for a second, inner bar. Observations of HI were previously thought to be ill-suited to the study of bar shocks due to limitations in angular resolution and sensitivity. However, our observations show that, following recent instrumental enhancements, such measurements are now feasible, albeit at the limits of instrumental capability.

Abstract:We present ultraviolet spectra of the dwarf Seyfert 1 nucleus of NGC 4395, obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and the Hubble Space Telescope's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at velocity resolutions of 7 to 15 km s −1. We confirm our earlier claim of C IV absorption in low-resolution UV spectra and detect a number of other absorption lines with lower ionization potentials. In addition to the Galactic lines, we identify two kinematic components of absorption that are likely to be intrinsic to NGC 4395. We consider possible origins of the absorption, including the interstellar medium (ISM) of – 2 – NGC 4395, the narrow-line region (NLR), outflowing UV absorbers, and X-ray " warm absorbers. " Component 1, at a radial velocity of −770 km s −1 with respect to the nucleus, is only identified in the C IV λ1548.2 line. It most likely represents an outflowing UV absorber, similar to those seen in a majority of Seyfert 1 galaxies, although additional observations are needed to confirm the reality of this feature. Component 2, at −114 km s −1 , most likely arises in the ISM of NGC 4395; its ionic column densities cannot be matched by photoionization models with a power-law continuum. Our models of the highly ionized X-ray absorbers claimed for this active galactic nucleus indicate that they would have undetectable C IV absorption, but large O VI and H I columns should be present. We attribute our lack of detection of the O VI and Lyβ absorption from the X-ray absorbers to a combination of noise and dilution of the nuclear spectrum by hot stars in the large FUSE aperture.

Abstract:Stellar bars can lead to gas inflow toward the center of a galaxy and stimulate nuclear star formation. However, there is no compelling evidence on whether they also feed a central supermassive black hole: by measuring the fractions of barred active and inactive galaxies, previous studies have yielded conflicting results. In this paper, we aim to understand the lack of observational evidence for bar-driven active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity by studying a sample of 41 nearby (d < 35 Mpc) barred galaxies from the Spitzer Survey for Stellar Structure in Galaxies. We use Chandra observations to measure nuclear 2–10 keV X-ray luminosities and estimate Eddington ratios, together with Spitzer 3.6 μm imaging to quantify the strength of the stellar bar in two independent ways: (1) from its structure, as traced by its ellipticity and boxiness, and (2) from its gravitational torque Qb, taken as the maximum ratio of the tangential force to the mean background radial force. In this way, rather than discretizing the presence of both stellar bars and nuclear activity, we are able to account for the continuum of bar strengths and degrees of AGN activity. We find nuclear X-ray sources in 31 out of 41 galaxies with median X-ray luminosity and Eddington ratio of LX = 4.3 × 1038 erg s−1 and Lbol/LEdd = 6.9 × 10−6, respectively, consistent with low-luminosity AGN activity. Including upper limits for those galaxies without nuclear detections, we find no significant correlation between any of the bar strength indicators and the degree of nuclear activity, irrespective of galaxy luminosity, stellar mass, Hubble type, or bulge size. Strong bars do not favor brighter or more efficient nuclear activity, implying that at least for the low-luminosity regime, supermassive black hole fueling is not closely connected to large-scale features.

Abstract:Gravitational torques induced by a stellar bar on the interstellar medium of a disk galaxy instigate radial inflow of gas toward the central regions of the galaxy. Accordingly, the presence of a bar should reinforce nuclear star formation activity or the fueling of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We test this hypothesis by comparing the detection rate and intensity of nuclear H II regions and AGNs among barred and unbarred galaxies in a sample of over 300 spirals selected from our recent optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies. The AGN group includes Seyfert nuclei as well as low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs).Among late-type spirals (Sc-Sm), as opposed to early-type spirals (SO/a-Sbc), we observe in the barred group a very marginal increase in the detection rate of H II nuclei and a corresponding decrease in the incidence of AGNs. The minor differences in detection rates, however, are statistically insignificant, most likely stemming from selection effects and not from a genuine influence of the bar. The presence of a bar seems to have no noticeable impact on the likelihood of a galaxy for hosting either nuclear star formation or an AGN.The nuclei of early-type barred spirals (SO/a-Sbc) do exhibit measurably higher star formation rates than do their unbarred counterparts, as indicated by either the luminosity or the equivalent width of H alpha emission. By contrast, late-type spirals do not show such an effect. These results agree with previous studies and can be explained most easily in terms of structural differences between bars in early-type and late-type spirals. Nuclear H II regions spanning a wide range of intensities are found regardless of the presence of a bar, suggesting that a bar is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for star formation to occur in galactic nuclei. Other factors, such as the availablity of gas, must be equally important.Bars, on the other hand, have a negligible effect on the strength of the AGNs in our sample, regardless of the Hubble type of the host galaxy. This result confirms conclusions reached by other studies based on much smaller samples. Assuming that AGNs are fueled by gas from the interstellar medium of the host galaxy, some inferences concerning the fueling process can be made. We speculate that inner Lindblad resonances, particularly common in barred galaxies with large bulge-to-disk ratios, prevent gas which has been radially transported from large scales from reaching the nucleus. We discuss the feasibility of sustaining the power output of nearby AGNs with debris from tidal disruption of stars by a supermassive black hole as well as with mass loss from evolved stars. We conclude that such processes should be sufficient for fueling the low-luminosity nuclear sources found in many nearby galaxies.
The nuclear gas disk of NGC 1566 dissected by SINFONI and ALMA

Abstract:We present the results of near-infrared H- and K-band European Southern Observatory SINFONI integral field spectroscopy of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1566. We investigate the central kpc of this nearby galaxy, concentrating on excitation conditions, morphology, and stellar content. NGC 1566 was selected from our NUGA (-south) sample and is a ringed, spiral galaxy with a stellar bar. We present emission and absorption line measurements in the central kpc of NGC 1566. Broad and narrow Br{\gamma} lines were detected. The detection of a broad Br{\gamma} component is a clear sign of a super-massive black hole in the center. Blackbody emission temperatures of ~1000 K are indicative of a hot dust component, the torus, in the nuclear region. The molecular hydrogen lines, hydrogen recombination lines, and [FeII] indicate that the excitation at the center is coming from an AGN. The central region is predominantly inhabited by molecular gas, dust, and an old K-M type giant stellar population. The molecular gas and stellar velocity maps both show a rotation pattern. The molecular gas velocity field shows a perturbation toward the center that is typical for bars or spiral density waves. The molecular gas species of warm H_2(1-0)S(1) and cold ^{12}CO(3-2) gas trace a nuclear gas disk of about 3" in radius with a nuclear spiral reaching toward the nucleus. From the equivalent width of H_2(1-0)S(1) a molecular ring with r<~3" can be inferred. This spiral seems to be an instrument that allows gas to fall toward the nucleus down to <50 pc scales. The excitation of molecular hydrogen in the nuclear gas disk is not clear but diagnostic diagrams show a distinction between the nuclear region and a <9 Myr old star forming region at the southwestern spiral arm. Possibly shocked gas is detected ~2" from the center, which is visible in dispersion maps of H$_2$(1-0)S(1) and ^{12}CO(3-2) and in the 0.87 mm continuum.

The Fueling Diagram: Linking Galaxy Molecular-to-Atomic Gas Ratios to Interactions and Accretion

Abstract:To assess how external factors such as local interactions and fresh gas accretion influence the global ISM of galaxies, we analyze the relationship between recent enhancements of central star formation and total molecular-to-atomic (H2/HI) gas ratios, using a broad sample of field galaxies spanning early-to-late type morphologies, stellar masses of 10^(7.2-11.2) Msun, and diverse stages of evolution. We find that galaxies occupy several loci in a "fueling diagram" that plots H2/HI vs. mass-corrected blue-centeredness, a metric tracing the degree to which galaxies have bluer centers than the average galaxy at their stellar mass. Spiral galaxies show a positive correlation between H2/HI and mass-corrected blue-centeredness. When combined with previous results linking mass-corrected blue-centeredness to external perturbations, this correlation suggests a link between local galaxy interactions and molecular gas inflow/replenishment. Intriguingly, E/S0 galaxies show a more complex picture: some follow the same correlation, some are quenched, and a distinct population of blue-sequence E/S0 galaxies (with masses below key transitions in gas richness) defines a separate loop in the fueling diagram. This population appears to be composed of low-mass merger remnants currently in late- or post-starburst states, in which the burst first consumes the H2 while the galaxy center keeps getting bluer, then exhausts the H2, at which point the burst population reddens as it ages. Multiple lines of evidence suggest connected evolutionary sequences in the fueling diagram. In particular, tracking total gas-to-stellar mass ratios within the diagram provides evidence of fresh gas accretion onto low-mass E/S0s emerging from central starbursts. Drawing on a comprehensive literature search, we suggest that virtually all galaxies follow the same evolutionary patterns found in our broad sample.

Abstract:We use the sample of emission-line nuclei derived from a recently completed optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies to quantify the incidence of local (z approximate to 0) nuclear activity. Particular attention is paid to obtaining accurate measurements of the emission lines and reliable spectral classifications. The resulting database contains the largest collection of star-forming nuclei and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) currently known for nearby galaxies. It consists of 420 emission-line nuclei detected from a nearly complete, magnitude-limited sample of 486 galaxies with B-T less than or equal to 12.5 mag and declination greater than 0 degrees; the equivalent width detection limit of the brightest emission line, usually H alpha, is similar to 0.25 Angstrom.As is consistent with previous studies, we find detectable amounts of ionized gas in the central few hundred parsecs of most galaxies (86%); emission lines are present in essentially every spiral galaxy and in a large fraction of ellipticals and lenticulars. Based on their narrow-line spectra, half of the objects can be classified as H II or star-forming nuclei and the other half as some form of AGN, of which we distinguish three classes: Seyfert nuclei, low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs), and transition objects that we assume to be composite LINER/H II-nucleus systems. The population of AGNs is consequently very large; approximately 43% of the galaxies in our survey can be regarded as ''active,'' although, for a number of reasons, this fraction is still rather uncertain. Most of the objects have much lower luminosities than commonly studied AGNs; the median luminosity of the narrow H alpha line, after correcting for extinction, is only 2 x 10(39) ergs s(-1). Our sample therefore occupies the extreme faint end of the AGN luminosity function.We detect signatures of a broad-line region, as revealed by visible broad H alpha emission, in similar to 20% of the AGN sample. Seyfert nuclei, both type 1 and type 2, reside in similar to 10% of all galaxies. LINERs make up the bulk (1/2-3/4) of the AGN population and a significant fraction (1/5-1/3) of all galaxies. A nonnegligible subset of LINERs emit broad H alpha emission, furnishing direct evidence that a least some LINERs are indeed physically related to the AGN phenomenon.The dominant ionization mechanism of the nuclear emission depends strongly on the morphological type and luminosity of the host galaxy. AGNs are found predominantly in luminous, early-type (E-Sbc) galaxies, while H II nuclei prefer less luminous, late-type (Sbc and later) systems. The various AGN subclasses have broadly similar host galaxies.
