Abstract:PURPOSE To examine the ability of traditional Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and a light version of Healthcare FMEA (HFMEA), called Scenario analysis of FMEA (SAFER) by comparing their outputs in terms of the risks identified and their severity rankings. METHODS We applied two prospective methods of the quality management to surface image guided, linac-based radiosurgery (SIG-RS). For the traditional FMEA, decisions on how to improve an operation are based on risk priority number (RPN). RPN is a product of three indices: occurrence, severity and detectability. The SAFER approach; utilized two indices-frequency and severity-which were defined by a multidisciplinary team. A criticality matrix was divided into 4 categories; very low, low, high and very high. For high risk events, an additional evaluation was performed. Based upon the criticality of the process, it was decided if additional safety measures were needed and what they comprise. RESULTS Two methods were independently compared to determine if the results and rated risks were matching or not. Our results showed an agreement of 67% between FMEA and SAFER approaches for the 15 riskiest SIG-specific failure modes. The main differences between the two approaches were the distribution of the values and the failure modes (No.52, 54, 154) that have high SAFER scores do not necessarily have high FMEA RPN scores. In our results, there were additional risks identified by both methods with little correspondence. In the SAFER, when the risk score is determined, the basis of the established decision tree or the failure mode should be more investigated. CONCLUSION The FMEA method takes into account the probability that an error passes without being detected. SAFER is inductive because it requires the identification of the consequences from causes, and semi-quantitative since it allow the prioritization of risks and mitigation measures, and thus is perfectly applicable to clinical parts of radiotherapy.
Near-infrared morphologies of the host galaxies of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies

Abstract:We present $J$-band near-infrared (NIR) imaging of the host galaxies of nine narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1). Based on high-frequency radio observations at 37~GHz, seven of them could host powerful, most likely relativistic jets. Host galaxy morphology studies of NLS1 galaxies are scarce, but exceedingly important for understanding the seemingly heterogeneous nature of the NLS1 population as well as their evolution and place in the active galactic nuclei (AGN) scheme. Increasing the sample size is essential for achieving statistically significant results. We determine the morphological types of the host galaxies by performing photometric decomposition of NIR images using a 2D image decomposition algorithm GALFIT. We were able to sufficiently model five of the nine host galaxies. Based on the fitting parameters, mainly the Sérsic index, all of them are disk-like galaxies. Sources with clearly distinguishable bulge components all have pseudo-bulges, and four out of five sources show a component resembling a bar. A surprisingly large fraction, three out of five, show signs of interaction or disturbed morphology. Our results suggest that spiral galaxies with pseudo-bulges are able to launch and maintain powerful jets. They also imply that interaction - mainly minor mergers - may have a role in initially triggering higher levels of nuclear activity in NLS1 galaxies. Furthermore, our results support the heterogeneous nature of the NLS1 class and indicate that this diversity is caused by different evolutionary stages, possibly due to mergers.

The Bulgeless Seyfert/LINER Galaxy NGC 3367: Disk, Bar, Lopsidedness and Environment

Abstract:NGC3367 is a nearby isolated active galaxy that shows a radio jet, a strong bar and evidence of lopsidedness. We present a quantitative analysis of the stellar and gaseous structure of the galaxy disk and a search for evidence of recent interaction based on new UBVRI Halpha and JHK images and on archival Halpha Fabry-Perot and HI VLA data. From a coupled 1D/2D GALFIT bulge/bar/disk decomposition an (B/D ~ 0.07-0.1) exponential pseudobulge is inferred in all the observed bands. A NIR estimate of the bar strength <Q_T{max}(R)> = 0.44 places NGC 3367 bar among the strongest ones. The asymmetry properties were studied using (1) optical and NIR CAS indexes (2) the stellar (NIR) and gaseous (Halpha, HI) A_1 Fourier mode amplitudes and (3) the HI integrated profile and HI mean intensity distribution. While the average stellar component shows asymmetry values close to the average found in the Local Universe for isolated galaxies, the young stellar component and gas values are largely decoupled showing significantly larger A_1 mode amplitudes suggesting that the gas has been recently perturbed. Our search for (1) faint stellar structures in the outer regions (up to u_R ~ 26 mag arcsec^{-2}), (2) (Halpha) star-forming satellite galaxies and (3) regions with different colors (stellar populations) along the disk all failed. Such an absence is interpreted using recent numerical simulations to constrain a tidal event with an LMC like galaxy to some dynamical times in the past or to a current very low mass, gas rich accretion. We conclude that a cold accretion mode (gas and small/dark galaxies) may be responsible of the nuclear activity and peculiar (young stars and gas) morphology regardless of the highly isolated environment. Black hole growth in bulgeless galaxies may be triggered by cosmic smooth mass accretion.

Abstract:The Spitzer high resolution spectra of 72 Seyfert galaxies from the 12$\mu$m Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The presence of starburst components in these galaxies can be quantified by powerful mid-IR diagnostics tools (i.e. 11.25$\mu$m PAH feature equivalent width and the H$_2$ emission line intensity), as well as the AGN dominance can be measured by specific fine structure line ratios (e.g. [NeV]/[NeII], [NeV]/[SiII], etc.). The two types of Seyfert galaxies do not show any statistical difference in our diagnostic tools. However, the Seyfert 2's showing hidden Broad Line Regions in spectro-polarimetric observations have on average an higher AGN dominance, a weaker star formation component and a warmer [60 - 25] spectral index than those without broad emission lines.

Correlation of Structure and Stellar Properties of Galaxies in Stripe 82

Abstract:Establishing a correlation (or lack thereof) between the bimodal color distribution of galaxies and their structural parameters is crucial to understand the origin of bimodality. To achieve that, we have performed a 2D mass-based structural decomposition (bulge+disk) of all disk galaxies (total = 1263) in the Herschel imaging area of the Stripe 82 region using K-s-band images from the VICS82 survey. The scaling relations thus derived are found to reflect the internal kinematics and are employed in combination to select an indubitable set of classical- and pseudo-bulge-hosting disk galaxies. The rest of the galaxies (<20%) are marked as disks with "ambiguous" bulges. Pseudo- and classical bulge-disk galaxies exhibit clear bimodality in terms of all stellar parameters (M-*, specific star formation rate, r-K-s). All pseudo-bulge-disk galaxies are blue and star forming, and all classical bulge-disk galaxies are red and quiescent with less than 5% digressions. Ambiguous bulge-disk galaxies are intermediate to pseudo- and classical bulge-disk galaxies in the distribution of all structural and stellar parameters. Delta (eb)-based on the placement of bulges on the Kormendy relation-is found to be the most efficient single structural indicator of both bulge type and stellar activity. The placement of ambiguous bulge-disk galaxies on scaling relations and the fundamental plane, in addition to their peculiar stellar properties, suggests that they are dominantly part of the green valley.
Nuclear Infrared Spectral Energy Distribution of Type II Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:We present near and mid--IR observations of a sample of Seyfert II galaxies drawn from the $12\mu$m Galaxy Sample. The sample was observed in the J, H, K, L, M and N bands. Galaxy Surface Brightness Profiles are modeled using nuclear, bulge, bar (when necessary) and disk components. To check the reliability of our findings the procedure was tested using {\em Spitzer\/} observations of M\,31. Nuclear Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) are determined for 34 objects, and optical spectra are presented for 38, including analysis of their stellar populations using the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code. Emission line diagnostic-diagrams are used to discriminate between genuine AGN and HII nuclei. Combining our observations with those found in the literature, we have a total of 40 SEDs. It is found that about 40\%\ of the SEDs are characterized by an upturn in the near-IR, which we have quantified as a NIR slope $\alpha < 1$ for an SED characterized as $\lambda f_{\lambda} \propto \lambda^{\alpha}$. Three objects with an HII nucleus and two Seyfert nuclei with strong contamination from a circumnuclear starburst, also show an upturn. For genuine AGN this component could be explained as emission from the accretion disk, a jet, or from a very hot dust component leaking from the central region through a clumpy obscuring structure. The presence of a very compact nuclear starburst as the origin for this NIR excess emission is not favored by our spectroscopic data for these objects.

Abstract:We present multicomponent decomposition of high-quality R-band images of 320 disk galaxies from the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey. In addition to bulges and disks, we successfully model nuclei, bars, disk breaks, nuclear/inner lenses, and inner rings. Our modeling strategy treats nuclear rings and nuclear bars as part of the bulge component, while other features such as spiral arms, outer lenses, and outer rings are omitted from the fits because they are not crucial for accurate bulge measurements. The error budget of bulge parameters includes the uncertainties from sky-level measurements and model assumptions. Comparison with multicomponent decomposition from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies reveals broad agreement for the majority of the overlapping galaxies, but for a considerable fraction of galaxies there are significant differences in bulge parameters caused by different strategies in model construction. We confirm that on average bulge prominence decreases from early- to late-type disk galaxies, although the large scatter of bulge-to-total ratios in each morphological bin limits the application of Hubble type as an accurate predictor of bulge-to-total ratio. In contrast with previous studies claiming that barred galaxies host weaker bulges, we find that barred and unbarred spiral galaxies have similar bulge prominence.
A Spitzer Study of Pseudobulges in S0 Galaxies : Secular Evolution of Disks

Abstract:In this Letter, we present a systematic study of lenticular (S0) galaxies based on mid-infrared imaging data on 185 objects taken using the Spitzer Infra Red Array Camera. We identify the S0s hosting pseudobulges based on the position of the bulge on the Kormendy diagram and the Sérsic index of the bulge. We find that pseudobulges preferentially occur in the fainter luminosity class (defined as having total K-band absolute magnitude M_K fainter than -22.66 in the AB system). We present relations between bulge and disk parameters obtained as a function of the bulge type. The disks in the pseudobulge hosting galaxies are found to have distinct trends on the r_e-r_d and \mu_d (0) - r_d correlations compared to those in galaxies with classical bulges. We show that the disks of pseudobulge hosts possess on average a smaller scale length and have a fainter central surface brightness than their counterparts occurring in classical bulge hosting galaxies. The differences found for discs in pseudobulge and classical bulge hosting galaxies may be a consequence of the different processes creating the central mass concentrations.

Abstract:We have completed an optical spectroscopic survey of the nuclear regions (r < 200 pc) of a large sample of nearby galaxies. Although the main objectives of the survey are to search for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei and to quantify their luminosity function, the database can be used for a variety of other purposes. This paper presents measurements of the spectroscopic parameters for the 418 emission-line nuclei, along with a compilation of the global properties of all 486 galaxies in the survey. Stellar absorption generally poses a serious obstacle to obtaining accurate measurement of emission lines in nearby galactic nuclei. We describe a procedure for removing the starlight from the observed spectra in an efficient and objective manner. The main parameters of the emission lines (intensity ratios, fluxes, profile widths, equivalent widths) are measured and tabulated, as are several stellar absorption-line and continuum indices useful for studying the stellar population. Using standard nebular diagnostics, we determine the probable ionization mechanisms of the emission-line objects. The resulting spectral classifications provide extensive information on the demographics of emission-line nuclei in the local universe. This new catalog contains over 200 objects showing spectroscopic evidence for recent star formation and an equally large number of active galactic nuclei, including 46 which show broad H-alpha emission. These samples will serve as the basis of future studies of nuclear activity in nearby galaxies.
Circumnuclear regions in barred spiral galaxies II. Relations to host galaxies

Abstract:We present optical broad- and narrow-band imaging of a sample of a dozen barred galaxies. These images are analyzed in conjunction with our previously published near-infrared imaging of their central regions and with literature values for, e.g., bar strengths and the total star formation activity of the galaxies. We present B, I and H alpha images, and radial profiles derived from these, to infer geometric and dynamical parameters of the structural components of the galaxies, such as bar lengths, bar ellipticities, and location of star formation and dust. We find that the more centrally concentrated the H alpha emission in a galaxy is, i.e., the higher the fraction of star formation originating in the circumnuclear region, the higher the overall star formation rate, as measured from far-infrared flux ratios. Stronger bars host smaller nuclear rings, but the strength of the bar does not correlate with either the intrinsic ellipticity of the ring or the offset between the position angles of the bar and the ring. We interpret these results in comparison with modelling of gas inflow in the circumnuclear region, and show that they were theoretically expected. We confirm observationally, and for the first time, the anti-correlation predicted from theory and modelling between the degree of curvature of the bar dust lanes and the strength of the bar, where stronger bars have straighter dust lanes.

Double Bars, Inner Disks, and Nuclear Rings in Early-Type Disk Galaxies

Abstract:We present results from a survey of an unbiased sample of 38 early-type (S0–Sa), low-inclination, optically barred galaxies in the field, using images both from the ground and from space. Our goal was to find and characterize central stellar and gaseous structures: secondary bars, inner disks, and nuclear rings. We find that bars inside bars are surprisingly common: at least one-quarter of the sample galaxies (possibly as many as 40%) are double barred, with no preference for Hubble type or the strength of the primary bar. A typical secondary bar is ∼12% of the size of its primary bar and extends to 240–750 pc in radius. Secondary bars are not systematically either parallel or perpendicular to the primary; we see cases where they lead the primary bar in rotation and others where they trail, which supports the hypothesis that the two bars of a double-bar system rotate independently. We see no significant effect of secondary bars on nuclear activity: our double-barred galaxies are no more likely to harbor a Seyfert or LINER nucleus than our single-barred galaxies. We find kiloparsec-scale inner disks in at least 20% of our sample; they occur almost exclusively in S0 galaxies. These disks are on average 20% the size of their host bar and show a wider range of relative sizes than do secondary bars. Nuclear rings are present in about a third of our sample. Most of these rings are dusty, sites of current or recent star formation, or both; such rings are preferentially found in Sa galaxies. Three S0 galaxies (8% of the sample, but 15% of the S0's) appear to have purely stellar nuclear rings, with no evidence for dust or recent star formation. The fact that these central stellar structures are so common indicates that the inner regions of early-type barred galaxies typically contain dynamically cool and disklike structures. This is especially true for S0 galaxies, where secondary bars, inner disks, and/or stellar nuclear rings are present at least two-thirds of the time. If we interpret nuclear rings, secondary bars, and (possibly) inner disks and nuclear spirals as signs of inner Lindblad resonances (ILRs), then between one and two-thirds of barred S0–Sa galaxies show evidence for ILRs.
A Search for 'dwarf' Seyfert Nuclei. 2: an Optical Spectral Atlas of the Nuclei of Nearby Galaxies

Abstract:We present an optical spectral atlas of the nuclear region (generally 2'' X 4'', or r less than or similar to 200 pc) of a magnitude-limited survey of 486 nearby galaxies having B-T less than or equal to 12.5 mag and delta > 0 degrees. The double spectrograph on the Hale 5 m telescope yielded simultaneous spectral coverage of similar to 4230-5110 Angstrom and similar to 6210-6860 Angstrom, with a spectral resolution of similar to 4 Angstrom in the blue half and similar to 2.5 Angstrom in the red half. This large, statistically significant survey contains uniformly observed and calibrated moderate-dispersion spectra of exceptionally high quality. The data presented in this paper will be used for various systematic studies of the physical properties of the nuclei of nearby galaxies, with special emphasis on searching for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, or ''dwarf'' Seyferts. Our survey led to the discovery of four relatively obvious but previously uncataloged Seyfert galaxies (NGC 3735, 4395, 4639, and 6951), and many more galactic nuclei showing subtle evidence for Seyfert activity. We have also identified numerous low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs), some of which may be powered by nonstellar processes. Of the many ''starburst'' nuclei in our sample, several exhibit the spectral features of Wolf-Rayet stars.
A Search for "dwarf" Seyfert Nuclei. Vi. Properties of Emission-Line Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies

Abstract:We use the database from Paper III to quantify the global and nuclear properties of emission-line nuclei in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies. We show that the host galaxies of Seyferts, LINERs, and transition objects share remarkably similar large-scale properties and local environments. The distinguishing traits emerge on nuclear scales. Compared with LINERs, Seyfert nuclei are an order of magnitude more luminous and exhibit higher electron densities and internal extinction. We suggest that Seyfert galaxies possess characteristically more gas-rich circumnuclear regions and hence a more abundant fuel reservoir and plausibly higher accretion rates. The differences between the ionization states of the narrow emission-line regions of Seyferts and LINERs can be partly explained by the differences in their nebular properties. Transition-type objects are consistent with being composite (LINER/H II) systems. With very few exceptions, the stellar population within the central few hundred parsecs of the host galaxies is uniformly old, a finding that presents a serious challenge to starburst or post-starburst models for these objects. Seyferts and LINERs have virtually indistinguishable velocity fields as inferred from their line widths and line asymmetries. Transition nuclei tend to have narrower lines and more ambiguous evidence for line asymmetries. All three classes of objects obey a strong correlation between line width and line luminosity. We argue that the angular momentum content of circumnuclear gas may be an important factor in determining whether a nucleus becomes active. Finally, we discuss some possible complications for the unification model of Seyfert galaxies posed by our observations.
Near-Infrared Structure of Fast and Slow Rotating Disk Galaxies

Abstract:We investigate the stellar disk structure of six nearby edge-on spiral galaxies using high-resolution JHKs-band images and 3D radiative transfer models. To explore how mass and environment shape spiral disks, we selected galaxies with rotational velocities between 69 < Vrot < 245 km/sec, and two with unusual morphologies. We find a wide diversity of disk structure. Of the fast-rotating (Vrot > 150 km/sec) galaxies, only NGC 4013 has the super-thin+thin+thick nested disk structure seen in NGC 891 and the Milky Way, albeit with decreased oblateness, while NGC 1055, a disturbed massive spiral galaxy, contains disks with hz $\lesssim$ 200 pc. NGC 4565, another fast-rotator, contains a prominent ring at a radius ~5 kpc but no super-thin disk. Despite these differences, all fast-rotating galaxies in our sample have inner truncations in at least one of their disks. These truncations lead to Freeman Type II profiles when projected face-on. Slow-rotating galaxies are less complex, lacking inner disk truncations and requiring fewer disk components to reproduce their light distributions. Super-thin disk components in undisturbed disks contribute ~25% of the total Ks-band light, up to that of the thin-disk contribution. The presence of super-thin disks correlates with infrared flux ratios; galaxies with super-thin disks have f(Ks)/f(60 $\mu$m) $\leq$ 0.12 for integrated light, consistent with super-thin disks being regions of on-going star-formation. Attenuation-corrected vertical color gradients in (J-Ks) correlate with the observed disk structure and are consistent with population gradients with young-to-intermediate ages closer to the midplane, indicating that disk heating-or cooling-is a ubiquitous phenomenon.

Abstract:We study the statistical properties of 320 bulges of disk galaxies in the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey, using robust structural parameters of galaxies derived from image fitting. We apply the Kormendy relation to classify classical and pseudo bulges and characterize the bulge dichotomy with respect to the structural properties of the bulges and the physical properties of the host galaxies. We confirm previous findings that pseudo bulges on average have smaller Sérsic indices, lower bulge-to-total ratios, and fainter surface brightnesses than classical bulges. Our sizable sample statistically shows that pseudo bulges are more intrinsically flattened than classical bulges. Pseudo bulges are most frequent (incidence ≳80%) in late-type spirals (later than Sc). Our measurements support the picture in which pseudo bulges arose from star formation induced by inflowing gas, while classical bulges were born out of violent processes such as mergers and coalescence of clumps. We reveal differences with the literature that warrant attention: (1) the bimodal distribution of Sérsic indices presented by previous studies is not reproduced in our study; (2) classical and pseudo bulges have similar relative bulge sizes; and (3) the pseudo bulge fraction is considerably smaller in early-type disks than reported in previous studies based on one-dimensional surface brightness profile fitting. We attribute these differences to our improved image quality, more robust bulge-to-disk decomposition technique, and to the different classification criteria that we applied. Moreover, we find that barred galaxies do not host more pseudo bulges or more prominent pseudo bulges than unbarred galaxies. Various implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:We present Hubble Space Telescope blue spectra at intermediate spectral resolution for the nuclei of 23 nearby disk galaxies. These objects were selected to have nebular emission in their nuclei and span a range of emission-line classifications, as well as Hubble types. In this paper we focus on the stellar population as revealed by the continuum spectral energy distribution measured within the central 0 ''.13 (similar to 8 pc) of these galaxies. The data were modeled with linear combinations of single-age stellar population synthesis models. The large majority (similar to 80%) of the surveyed nuclei have spectra whose features are consistent with a predominantly old (greater than or similar to 5 x 10(9) yr) stellar population. Approximately 25% of these nuclei show evidence of a component with age younger than 1 Gyr, with the incidence of these stars related to the nebular classification. Successful model fits imply an average reddening corresponding to A(V) approximate to 0.4 mag and a stellar metallicity of 1-2.5 Z circle dot. We discuss the implications of these results for understanding the star formation history in the environment of quiescent and active supermassive black holes. Our findings reinforce the picture wherein Seyfert nuclei and the majority of low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions are predominantly accretion-powered and suggest that much of the central star formation in H II nuclei is actually circumnuclear.
Structural parameters of nearby emission-line galaxies

Abstract:We present the results of an investigation on the main structural properties derived from VRI and Halpha surface photometry of galaxies hosting nuclear emission-line regions (including Seyfert 1, Seyfert 2, LINER and starburst galaxies) as compared with normal galaxies. Our original sample comprises 22 active galaxies, 4 starbursts and 1 normal galaxy and has been extended with several samples obtained from the literature. Bulge and disc parameters, along with B/D relation, have been derived applying an iterative procedure. The resulting parameters have been combined with additional data in order to reach a statistically significant sample. We find some differences in the bulge distribution across the different nuclear types that could imply familes of bulges with different physical properties. Bulge and disc characteristic colours have been defined and derived for our sample and compared with a control sample of early type objects. The results suggest that bulge and disc stellar populations are comparable in normal and active galaxies.

Central Structural Parameters of Early-Type Galaxies as Viewed with HST/NICMOS

Abstract:We present surface photometry for the central regions of a sample of 33 early-type (E, S0, and S0/a) galaxies observed at 1.6 mum (H band) using the Hubble Space Telescope. Dust absorption has less of an impact on the galaxy morphologies in the near-infrared than found in previous work based on observations at optical wavelengths. When present, dust seems to be most commonly associated with optical line emission. We employ a new technique of two-dimensional fitting to extract quantitative parameters for the bulge light distribution and nuclear point sources, taking into consideration the effects of the point-spread function. By parameterizing the bulge profile with a Nuker law, we confirm that the central surface brightness distributions largely fall into two categories, each of which correlates with the global properties of the galaxies. "Core" galaxies tend to be luminous elliptical galaxies with boxy or pure elliptical isophotes, whereas "power-law" galaxies are preferentially lower luminosity systems with disky isophotes. The infrared surface brightness profiles are very similar to those in the optical, with notable exceptions being very dusty objects. Similar to the study of Faber et al., based on optical data, we find that galaxy cores obey a set of fundamental plane relations wherein more luminous galaxies with higher central stellar velocity dispersions generally possess larger cores with lower surface brightnesses. Unlike most previous studies, however, we do not find a clear gap in the distribution of inner cusp slopes; several objects have inner cusp slopes (0.3 <<gamma><0.5) that straddle the regimes conventionally defined for core and power-law galaxies. The nature of these intermediate objects is unclear. We draw attention to two objects in the sample that appear to be promising cases of galaxies with isothermal cores that are not the brightest members of a cluster. Unresolved nuclear point sources are found in <similar to>50% of the sample galaxies, roughly independent of profile type, with magnitudes in the range m(H)(nuc) = 12.8 to 17.4 mag, which corresponds to M-H(nuc) = -12.8 to -18.4 mag. Although the detection rate of compact nuclei seems favored toward galaxies spectroscopically classified as weak active galactic nuclei, we find no significant correlation between the near-infrared nuclear luminosities and either the optical emission-line luminosities or the inferred black hole masses.

Abstract:We have imaged a sample of 45 face-on spiral galaxies in the K-band, to determine the morphology of the old stellar population, which dominates the mass in the disk. The K-band images of the spiral galaxies have been used to calculate different characteristics of the underlying density perturbation such as arm strengths, profiles and cross-sections, and spiral pitch angles. Contrary to expectations, no correlation was found between arm pitch angle and Hubble type, and combined with previous results this leads us to conclude that the morphology of the old stellar population bears little resemblance to the optical morphology used to classify galaxies. The arm properties of our galaxies seem inconsistent with predictions from the simplest density wave theories, and some observations, such as variations in pitch angle within galaxies, seem hard to reconcile even with more complex modal theories. Bars have no detectable effect on arm strengths for the present sample. We have also obtained B-band images of three of the galaxies. For these galaxies we have measured arm cross-sections and strengths, to investigate the effects of disk density perturbations on star formation in spiral disks. We find that B-band arms lead K-band arms and are narrower than K-band arms, apparently supporting predictions made by the large scale shock scenario, although the effects of dust on B-band images may contribute towards these results.

Abstract:We use a sample built on the SDSS DR7 catalogue and the bulge-disc decomposition of Simard et al. (2011) to study how the bulge and disc components contribute to the parent galaxy's star formation activity, by determining its position in the star formation rate (SFR) - stellar mass (M$_{\star}$) plane at 0.02$<z<$0.1. We use the bulge and disc colours as proxy for their SFRs. We study the mean galaxy bulge-total mass ratio (B/T) as a function of the residual from the MS ($\Delta_{MS}$) and find that the B/T-$\Delta_{MS}$ relation exhibits a parabola-like shape with the peak of the MS corresponding to the lowest B/Ts at any stellar mass. The lower and upper envelop of the MS are populated by galaxies with similar B/T, velocity dispersion and concentration ($R_{90}/R_{50}$) values. Bulges above the MS are characterised by blue colours or, when red, by a high level of dust obscuration, thus indicating that in both cases they are actively star forming. When on the MS or below it, bulges are mostly red and dead. At stellar masses above $10^{10.5} $M$_{\odot}$, bulges on the MS or in the green valley tend to be significantly redder than their counterparts in the quiescence region, despite similar levels of dust obscuration. The disc color anti-correlates at any mass with the distance from the MS, getting redder when approaching the MS lower envelope and the quiescence region. We conclude that the position of a galaxy in the LogSFR-LogM$_{\star}$ plane depends on the star formation activity of its components: above the MS both bulge and disk are actively star forming. The nuclear activity is the first to be suppressed, moving the galaxies on the MS. Once the disk stops forming stars as well, the galaxy moves below the MS and eventually to the quiescence region. This is confirmed by a large fraction ($\sim45\%$) of passive galaxies with a secure two component morphology.
