Abstract:In this chapter of the e-book "Self-Organized Criticality Systems" we summarize some theoretical approaches to self-organized criticality (SOC) phenomena that involve percolation as an essential key ingredient. Scaling arguments, random walk models, linear-response theory, and fractional kinetic equations of the diffusion and relaxation type are presented on an equal footing with theoretical approaches of greater sophistication, such as the formalism of discrete Anderson nonlinear Schrödinger equation, Hamiltonian pseudochaos, conformal maps, and fractional derivative equations of the nonlinear Schrödinger and Ginzburg-Landau type. Several physical consequences are described which are relevant to transport processes in complex systems. It is shown that a state of self-organized criticality may be unstable against a bursting ("fishbone") mode when certain conditions are met. Finally we discuss SOC-associated phenomena, such as: self-organized turbulence in the Earth's magnetotail (in terms of the "Sakura" model), phase transitions in SOC systems, mixed SOC-coherent behavior, and periodic and auto-oscillatory patterns of behavior. Applications of the above pertain to phenomena of magnetospheric substorm, market crashes, and the global climate change and are also discussed in some detail. Finally we address the frontiers in the field in association with the emerging projects in fusion research and space exploration.

Social nucleation: Group formation as a phase transition

Abstract:The spontaneous formation and subsequent growth, dissolution, merger and competition of social groups bears similarities to physical phase transitions in metastable finite systems. We examine three different scenarios, percolation, spinodal decomposition and nucleation, to describe the formation of social groups of varying size and density. In our agent-based model, we use a feedback between the opinions of agents and their ability to establish links. Groups can restrict further link formation, but agents can also leave if costs exceed the group benefits. We identify the critical parameters for costs/benefits and social influence to obtain either one large group or the stable coexistence of several groups with different opinions. Analytic investigations allow to derive different critical densities that control the formation and coexistence of groups. Our novel approach sheds new light on the early stage of network growth and the emergence of large connected components.

Abstract: Percolation theory has been widely used to study phase transitions in complex networked systems. It has also successfully explained several macroscopic phenomena across different fields. Yet, the existent theoretical framework for percolation places the focus on the direct interactions among the system's components, while recent empirical observations have shown that indirect interactions are common in many systems like ecological and social networks, among others. Here, we propose a new percolation framework that accounts for indirect interactions, which allows to generalize the current theoretical body and understand the role of the underlying indirect influence of the components of a networked system on its macroscopic behavior. We report a rich phenomenology in which first-order, second-order or hybrid phase transitions are possible depending on whether the links of the substrate network are directed, undirected or a mix, respectively. We also present an analytical framework to characterize the proposed induced percolation, paving the way to further understand network dynamics with indirect interactions.

Abstract:Percolation is the simplest fundamental model in statistical mechanics that exhibits phase transitions signaled by the emergence of a giant connected component. Despite its very simple rules, percolation theory has successfully been applied to describe a large variety of natural, technological and social systems. Percolation models serve as important universality classes in critical phenomena characterized by a set of critical exponents which correspond to a rich fractal and scaling structure of their geometric features. In this review we will first outline the basic features of the ordinary model and take a glimpse at a number of selective variations and modifications of the original model. Directed percolation process will be also discussed as a prototype of systems displaying a nonequilibrium phase transition. After a short review on SLE, we will provide an overview on existence of the scaling limit and conformal invariance of the critical percolation. We will also establish a connection with the magnetic models. Recent applications of the percolation theory in natural and artificial landscapes are also reviewed.

Two transitions in spatial modular networks

Abstract:Understanding the resilience of infrastructures such as transportation network has significant importance for our daily life. Recently, a homogeneous spatial network model was developed for studying spatial embedded networks with characteristic link length such as power-grids and the brain. However, although many real-world networks are spatially embedded and their links have characteristics length such as pipelines, power lines or ground transportation lines they are not homogeneous but rather heterogeneous. For example, density of links within cities are significantly higher than between cities. Here we present and study numerically and analytically a similar realistic heterogeneous spatial modular model using percolation process to better understand the effect of heterogeneity on such networks. The model assumes that inside a city there are many lines connecting different locations, while long lines between the cities are sparse and usually directly connecting only a few nearest neighbours cities in a two dimensional plane. We find that this model experiences two distinct continues transitions, one when the cities disconnect from each other and the second when each city breaks apart. Although the critical threshold for site percolation in 2D grid remains an open question we analytically find the critical threshold for site percolation in this model. In addition, while the homogeneous model experience a single transition having a unique phenomenon called \textit{critical stretching} where a geometric crossover from random to spatial structure in different scales found to stretch non-linearly with the characteristic length at criticality. Here we show that the heterogeneous model does not experience such a phenomenon indicating that critical stretching strongly depends on the network structure.

Non-Normal Interactions Create Socio-Economic Bubbles

Abstract:In social networks, bursts of activity often result from the imitative behavior between interacting agents. The Ising model, along with its variants in the social sciences, serves as a foundational framework to explain these phenomena through its critical properties. We propose an alternative generic mechanism for the emergence of collective exuberance within a broad class of agent-based models. We show that our model does not require the fine-tuning to a critical point, as is commonly done to explain bursts of activity using the Ising model and its variants. Instead, our approach hinges on the intrinsic non-symmetric and hierarchical organization of socio-economic networks. These non-normal networks exhibit transient and unsustainable surges in herd behavior across a wide range of control parameters even in the subcritical regime, thereby eliminating the need for the - arguably artificial - fine-tuning proximity to a critical point. To empirically validate our framework, we examine the behavior of meme stocks and establish a direct linkage between the size of financial bubbles and the degree of non-normality in the network, as quantified by the Kreiss constant. Our proposed mechanism presents an alternative that is more general than prevailing conceptions of instabilities in diverse social systems.

Abstract:<p>In the last two decades, network science has blossomed and influenced various fields, such as statistical physics, computer science, biology and sociology, from the perspective of the heterogeneous interaction patterns of components composing the complex systems. As a paradigm for random and semi-random connectivity, percolation model plays a key role in the development of network science and its applications. On the one hand, the concepts and analytical methods, such as the emergence of the giant cluster, the finite-size scaling, and the mean-field method, which are intimately related to the percolation theory, are employed to quantify and solve some core problems of networks. On the other hand, the insights into the percolation theory also facilitate the understanding of networked systems, such as robustness, epidemic spreading, vital node identification, and community detection. Meanwhile, network science also brings some new issues to the percolation theory itself, such as percolation of strong heterogeneous systems, topological transition of networks beyond pairwise interactions, and emergence of a giant cluster with mutual connections. So far, the percolation theory has already percolated into the researches of structure analysis and dynamic modeling in network science. Understanding the percolation theory should help the study of many fields in network science, including the still opening questions in the frontiers of networks, such as networks beyond pairwise interactions, temporal networks, and network of networks. The intention of this paper is to offer an overview of these applications, as well as the basic theory of percolation transition on network systems.</p>
Percolation and conductivity in evolving disordered media

Abstract:Percolation theory and the associated conductance networks have provided deep insights into the flow and transport properties of a vast number of heterogeneous materials and media. In practically all cases, however, the conductance of the networks' bonds remains constant throughout the entire process. There are, however, many important problems in which the conductance of the bonds evolves over time and does not remain constant. Examples include clogging, dissolution and precipitation, catalytic processes in porous materials, as well as the deformation of a porous medium by applying an external pressure or stress to it that reduces the size of its pores. We introduce two percolation models to study the evolution of the conductivity of such networks. The two models are related to natural and industrial processes involving clogging, precipitation, and dissolution processes in porous media and materials. The effective conductivity of the models is shown to follow known power laws near the percolation threshold, despite radically different behavior both away from and even close to the percolation threshold. The behavior of the networks close to the percolation threshold is described by critical exponents, yielding bounds for traditional percolation exponents. We show that one of the two models belongs to the traditional universality class of percolation conductivity, while the second model yields non-universal scaling exponents.

Abstract:We introduce a simple model for addressing the controversy in the study of financial systems, sometimes taken as brownian-like processes and other as critical systems with fluctuations of arbitrary magnitude. The model considers a collection of economical agents which establish trade connections among them according to basic economical principles properly translated into physical properties and interaction. With our model we are able to reproduce the evolution of macroscopic quantities (indices) and to correctly retrieve the common exponent value characterizing several indices in financial markets, relating it to the underlying topology of connections.

Unstable Supercritical Discontinuous Percolation Transitions

Abstract:The location and nature of the percolation transition in random networks is a subject of intense interest. Recently, a series of graph evolution processes have been introduced that lead to discontinuous percolation transitions where the addition of a single edge causes the size of the largest component to exhibit a significant macroscopic jump in the thermodynamic limit. These processes can have additional exotic behaviors, such as displaying a "Devil's staircase" of discrete jumps in the supercritical regime. Here we investigate whether the location of the largest jump coincides with the percolation threshold for a range of processes, such as Erdos-Renyipercolation, percolation via edge competition and via growth by overtaking. We find that the largest jump asymptotically occurs at the percolation transition for Erdos-Renyiand other processes exhibiting global continuity, including models exhibiting an "explosive" transition. However, for percolation processes exhibiting genuine discontinuities, the behavior is substantially richer. In percolation models where the order parameter exhibits a staircase, the largest discontinuity generically does not coincide with the percolation transition. For the generalized Bohman-Frieze-Wormald model, it depends on the model parameter. Distinct parameter regimes well in the supercritical regime feature unstable discontinuous transitions-a novel and unexpected phenomenon in percolation. We thus demonstrate that seemingly and genuinely discontinuous percolation transitions can involve a rich behavior in supercriticality, a regime that has been largely ignored in percolation.
Thermodynamics of percolation in interacting systems

Abstract:Interacting systems can be studied as the networks where nodes are system units and edges denote correlated interactions. Although percolation on network is a unified way to model the emergence and propagation of correlated behaviours, it remains unknown how the dynamics characterized by percolation is related to the thermodynamics of phase transitions. It is non-trivial to formalize thermodynamics for most complex systems, not to mention calculating thermodynamic quantities and verifying scaling relations during percolation. In this work, we develop a formalism to quantify the thermodynamics of percolation in interacting systems, which is rooted in a discovery that percolation transition is a process for the system to lose the freedom degrees associated with ground state configurations. We derive asymptotic formulas to accurately calculate entropy and specific heat under our framework, which enables us to detect phase transitions and demonstrate the Rushbrooke equality (i.e., $\alpha+2\beta+\gamma=2$) in six representative complex systems (e.g., Bernoulli and bootstrap percolation, classical and quantum synchronization, non-linear oscillations with damping, and cellular morphogenesis). These results suggest the general applicability of our framework in analyzing diverse interacting systems and percolation processes.

Abstract:A new class of percolation model in complex networks, in which nodes are characterized by hidden variables reflecting the properties of nodes and the occupied probability of each link is determined by the hidden variables of the end nodes, is studied in this paper. By the mean field theory, the analytical expressions for the phase of percolation transition is deduced. It is determined by the distribution of the hidden variables for the nodes and the occupied probability between pairs of them. Moreover, the analytical expressions obtained are checked by means of numerical simulations on a particular model. Besides, the general model can be applied to describe and control practical diffusion models, such as disease diffusion model, scientists cooperation networks, and so on. Abstract:Motivated by empirical observations on the interplay of trends and reversion, a lattice gas model of financial markets is presented. The shares of an asset are modeled by gas molecules that are distributed across a hidden social network of investors. The model is equivalent to the Ising model on this network, whose magnetization represents the deviation of the asset price from its value. Moreover, the system should drive itself to its critical temperature in efficient markets. There, it is characterized by universal critical exponents, in analogy with the second-order phase transition between water and steam. These critical exponents imply predictions for the auto-correlations of financial market returns and for Hurst exponents. For a simple network topology, consistency with empirical observations implies a fractal network dimension near 3, and a correlation time at least as long as the economic cyle. To also explain the observed market auto-correlations at intermediate scales, the model should be extended beyond the critical domain, to other network topologies, and to other models of critical dynamics.

Crises and collective socio-economic phenomena: simple models and challenges

Abstract:Financial and economic history is strewn with bubbles and crashes, booms and busts, crises and upheavals of all sorts. Understanding the origin of these events is arguably one of the most important problems in economic theory. In this paper, we review recent efforts to include heterogeneities and interactions in models of decision. We argue that the Random Field Ising model (RFIM) indeed provides a unifying framework to account for many collective socio-economic phenomena that lead to sudden ruptures and crises. We discuss different models that can capture potentially destabilising self-referential feedback loops, induced either by herding, i.e. reference to peers, or trending, i.e. reference to the past, and account for some of the phenomenology missing in the standard models. We discuss some empirically testable predictions of these models, for example robust signatures of RFIM-like herding effects, or the logarithmic decay of spatial correlations of voting patterns. One of the most striking result, inspired by statistical physics methods, is that Adam Smith's invisible hand can badly fail at solving simple coordination problems. We also insist on the issue of time-scales, that can be extremely long in some cases, and prevent socially optimal equilibria to be reached. As a theoretical challenge, the study of so-called "detailed-balance" violating decision rules is needed to decide whether conclusions based on current models (that all assume detailed-balance) are indeed robust and generic.

Abstract:It is widely believed that information spread on social media is a percolation process, with parallels to phase transitions in theoretical physics. However, evidence for this hypothesis is limited, as phase transitions have not been directly observed in any social media. Here, through an analysis of 100 million Weibo and 40 million Twitter users, we identify percolation-like spread and find that it happens more readily than current theoretical models would predict. The lower percolation threshold can be explained by the existence of positive feedback in the coevolution between network structure and user activity level, such that more-active users gain more followers. Moreover, this coevolution induces an extreme imbalance in users' influence. Our findings indicate that the ability of information to spread across social networks is higher than expected, with implications for many information-spread problems.

Abstract:Explosive Percolation describes the abrupt onset of large-scale connectivity that results from a simple random process designed to delay the onset of the transition on an underlying random network or lattice. Explosive percolation transitions exhibit an array of novel universality classes and supercritical behaviors including a stochastic sequence of discontinuous transitions, multiple giant components, and lack of self-averaging. Many mechanisms that give rise to explosive percolation have been discovered, including overtaking, correlated percolation, and evolution on hierarchical lattices. Many connections to real-world systems, ranging from social networks to nanotubes, have been identified and explosive percolation is an emerging paradigm for modeling these systems as well as the consequences of small interventions intended to delay phase transitions. This review aims to synthesize existing results on explosive percolation and to identify fruitful directions for future research.

Abstract:During the past two decades, percolation has long served as a basic paradigm for network resilience, community formation and so on in complex systems. While the percolation transition is known as one of the most robust continuous transitions, the percolation transitions occurring in complex systems are often of different types such as discontinuous, hybrid, and infinite-order phase transitions. Thus, percolation has received considerable attention in network science community. Here we present a very brief review of percolation theory recently developed, which includes those types of phase transitions, critical phenomena, and finite-size scaling theory. Moreover, we discuss potential applications of theoretical results and several open questions including universal behaviors.

Indirect Influence in Social Networks As an Induced Percolation Phenomenon

Abstract:Percolation theory has been widely used to study phase transitions in network systems. It has also successfully explained various macroscopic spreading phenomena across different fields. Yet, the theoretical frameworks have been focusing on direct interactions among nodes, while recent empirical observations have shown that indirect interactions are common in many network systems like social and ecological networks, among others. By investigating the detailed mechanism of both direct and indirect influence on scientific collaboration networks, here we show that indirect influence can play the dominant role in behavioral influence. To address the lack of theoretical understanding of such indirect influence on the macroscopic behavior of the system, we propose a percolation mechanism of indirect interactions called induced percolation. Surprisingly, our model exhibits a unique anisotropy property. Specifically, directed networks show first-order abrupt transitions as opposed to the second-order continuous transition in the same network structure but with undirected links. A mix of directed and undirected links leads to rich hybrid phase transitions. Furthermore, a unique feature of the nonmonotonic pattern is observed in network connectivities near the critical point. We also present an analytical framework to characterize the proposed induced percolation, paving the way to further understanding network dynamics with indirect interactions.
