Abstract:We carried out spectroscopic observations of the candidate black-hole binary GX339-4 during its low-hard and high-soft X-ray states, in 1997 and 1998 respectively. We have found that the spectrum is dominated by emission lines of neutral elements with asymmetric, round-topped profiles in the low-hard state (probably due to a dense matter outflow from an inflated outer disk). In the high-soft state, however, the emission lines from both neutral and ionized elements have unambiguously resolved double-peaked profiles; this indicates the presence of an irradiatively-heated thin accretion disk. Higher-ionization lines have larger peak-to-peak velocity separations. Our data do not show velocity modulations of the line centres due to the orbital motion of the compact object; there are no detectable lines from the companion star. These features are consistent with those of a system with a low-mass companion star and low orbital inclination. More results (from the 1999 low-hard state) coming soon in Paper II, stay tuned...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the optical spectral characteristics of the candidate black - hole binary system GX 339 - 4 in the high - soft state and low - hard state. Specifically, through spectral observations, the researchers attempt to reveal the spectral features in different X - ray states and the underlying physical mechanisms, especially how these features are related to the state changes of the accretion disk. ### The main problems the paper attempts to solve include: 1. **Changes in spectral features**: - In the low - hard state, the spectrum is mainly composed of emission lines of neutral elements, and these emission lines show an asymmetric, dome - like profile. - In the high - soft state, the emission lines of both neutral and ionized elements show a clear double - peak profile, and the peak separation of the highly ionized state lines is larger. 2. **The state of the accretion disk**: - The double - peak emission lines detected in the high - soft state indicate the existence of an irradiated and heated accretion disk. - The dome - like emission lines in the low - hard state may be caused by the dense matter flowing out from the expanded non - Keplerian accretion disk. 3. **The influence of orbital motion**: - The data do not show the line - center velocity modulation due to the orbital motion of the compact object, and the line - base width does not change significantly during each observation. - No obvious absorption lines from the companion star are detected, which is consistent with the system characteristics of a low - mass companion star and a low orbital inclination. 4. **Verification of system parameters**: - Through spectral and photometric observations, verify whether the system has an orbital period of 14.8 hours. - The research results support that GX 339 - 4 is a system with a low - mass companion star and a low orbital inclination. ### Summary Through detailed spectral observations, the paper reveals the spectral features of GX 339 - 4 in different X - ray states and explores the possible physical mechanisms behind these features. The research results not only enhance the understanding of the accretion process in black - hole binary systems but also provide important clues for further research on the physical properties of such systems.
