Abstract:We analyse five observations of the X-ray binary GX 339-4 by the soft gamma-ray OSSE detector on board CGRO simultaneous with either Ginga or RXTE observations. The source was bright during four of them, with the luminosity of L ~ 10^{37} erg/s and the spectrum typical for hard states of accreting black holes, and it was in an off state during the fifth one, with L ~ 10^{35} erg/s. Our broad-band spectral fits show the mean electron energy of electrons in the Comptonizing plasma decreasing with increasing luminosity within the hard (bright) state. For the observation with the best statistics at soft gamma-rays, approximately 1/4 of energy in the Comptonizing plasma is probably carried by non-thermal electrons. Then, considering the efficiency of Comptonized hybrid synchrotron emission allows us to obtain an upper limit on the strength of the magnetic field in the X-ray source. Furthermore, this synchrotron emission is capable of producing the optical spectrum observed in an optically-high state of GX 339-4. In the off state, the hard X-ray spectrum is consistent with being dominated by bremsstrahlung. The unusually strong Fe K alpha line observed by the PCA during that state is found not to be intrinsic to the source but to originate mostly in the Galactic diffuse emission.

Abstract:We present the results obtained from the spectral studies of black hole X-ray binary GX~339--4 using \astrosat~ observations during its 2021 outburst. \astrosat~ observed the source in the intermediate state for $\sim600$ ks. The combined spectra of SXT and LAXPC in the $0.7-25$ keV energy range are studied with phenomenological and physical models. The spectral study reveals a receding disc and a contracting corona during the observation period. The outflow rate is found to be increased though the accretion rates did not vary during the observation period. The X-ray flux decreases as the disc recedes and the spectrum becomes hard. At the same time, the Comptonized flux decreases with increasing fraction of thermal emission. This could be plausible that episodic jet ejection modified the corona and reduced Comptonized flux. An iron emission line at 6.4 keV is observed in the spectra of all the orbits of observation. We find that the equivalent width of the iron emission line correlates with the photon index, indicating a decrease in the reflection strength as the spectrum becomes hard. We observe that the disc flux does not follow $F_{\rm DBB}-T^{4}$ relation.

Abstract:XTE J1908+094 is an X-ray transient that went into outburst in February 2002. After two months it reached a 2-250 keV peak flux of 1 to 2 X 10-8 erg/s/cm2. Circumstantial evidence points to an accreting galactic black hole as the origin of the the X-radiation: pulsations nor thermonuclear flashes were detected that would identify a neutron star and the spectrum was unusually hard for a neutron star at the outburst onset. We report on BeppoSAX and RXTE All Sky Monitor observations of the broad-band spectrum of XTE J1908+094. The spectrum is consistent with a model consisting of a Comptonization component by a ~40 keV plasma (between 2 and 60 keV this component can be approximated by a power law with a photon index of 1.9 to 2.1), a multicolor accretion disk blackbody component with a temperature just below 1 keV and a broad emission line at about 6 keV. The spectrum is heavily absorbed by cold interstellar matter with an equivalent hydrogen column density of 2.5 X 10+22 cm-2, which makes it difficult to study the black body component in detail. The black body component exhibits strong evolution about 6 weeks into the outburst. Two weeks later this is followed by a swift decay of the power law component. The broadness of the 6 keV feature may be due to relativistic broadening or Compton scattering of a narrow Fe-K line.
3XMM J181923.7–170616: an X-Ray Binary with a 408 S Pulsar

Abstract:We carry out a dedicated study of 3XMM J181923.7-170616 with an approximate pulsation period of 400 s using the XMM-Newton and Swift observations spanning across nine years. We have refined the period of the source to 407.904(7) s (at epoch MJD 57142) and constrained the 1 sigma upper limit on the period derivative (P) over dot <= 1.1 x 10(-8)s s(-1). The source radiates hard, persistent X-ray emission during the observation epochs, which is best described by an absorbed power-law model (Gamma similar to 0.2-0.8) plus faint Fe lines at 6.4 and 6.7 keV. The X-ray flux revealed a variation within a factor of 2, along with a spectral hardening as the flux increased. The pulse shape is sinusoid-like and the spectral properties of different phases do not present significant variation. The absorption N-H (similar to 1.3 x 10(22) cm(-2)) is similar to the total Galactic hydrogen column density along the direction, indicating that it is a distant source. A search for the counterpart in optical and near-infrared surveys reveals a low-mass K-type giant, while the existence of a Galactic OB supergiant is excluded. A symbiotic X-ray binary (SyXB) is the favored nature of 3XMM. J181923.7-170616 and can essentially explain the low luminosity of 2.78 x 10(34)d(10)(2) erg s(-1), slow pulsation, hard X-ray spectrum, and possible K3 III companion. An alternative explanation of the source is a persistent Be X-ray binary (BeXB) with a companion star no earlier than B3-type.
Modelling the high mass accretion rate spectra of GX 339-4: Black hole spin from reflection?

Abstract:We extract all the XMM-Newton EPIC pn burst mode spectra of GX 339-4, together with simultaneous/contemporaneous RXTE data. These include three disc dominated and two soft intermediate spectra, and the combination of broad bandpass/moderate spectral resolution gives some of the best data on these bright soft states in black hole binaries. The disc dominated spectra span a factor three in luminosity, and all show that the disc emission is broader than the simplest multicolour disc model. This is consistent with the expected relativistic smearing and changing colour temperature correction produced by atomic features in the newest disc models. However, these models do not match the data at the 5 per cent level as the predicted atomic features are not present in the data, perhaps indicating that irradiation is important even when the high energy tail is weak. Whatever the reason, this means that the data have smaller errors than the best physical disc models, forcing use of more phenomenological models for the disc emission. We use these for the soft intermediate state data, where previous analysis using a simple disc continuum found an extremely broad residual, identified as the red wing of the iron line from reflection around a highly spinning black hole. However, the iron line energy is close to where the disc and tail have equal fluxes, so using a broader disc continuum changes the residual 'iron line' profile dramatically. With a broader disc continuum model, the inferred line is formed outside of 30 ${\rm{R_g}}$, so cannot constrain black hole spin. We caution that a robust determination of black hole spin from the iron line profile is very difficult where the disc makes a significant contribution at the iron line energy i.e. in most bright black hole states.

Abstract:Fast transitions between different types of power density spectra (PDS) happening over timescales of several tens of seconds are rare phenomena in black hole X-ray binaries. In this paper, we report a broadband spectral-timing analysis of the fast transitions observed in the 2021 outburst of GX 339-4 using NICER and HXMT observations. We observe transitions between band-limited noise-dominated PDS and type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), and their rapid appearance or disappearance. We also make a detailed comparison between the fast transitions in GX 339-4 with those seen in MAXI J1820+070 and MAXI J1348--630. By comparing the spectra of the periods with and without type-B QPOs, we find that the spectral ratios above 10 keV are nearly constant or slightly decreasing, and the values are different between sources. Below 10 keV, the flux change of the Comptonization component is inversely proportional to the flux change of the thermal component, suggesting that the appearance of type-B QPOs is associated with a redistribution of the accretion power between the disc and the Comptonizing emission region. The spectral ratios between the periods with type-B QPO and those with broadband noise are significantly different from that with type-B QPO and without type-B QPO, where the ratios (type-B QPO/broadband noise) show a maximum at around 4 keV and then decrease gradually towards high energies. Finally, we discuss the possible change of the geometry of the inner accretion flow and/or jet during the transitions.

The Evolution of GX 339-4 in the Low-Hard State As Seen by NuSTAR and Swift

Abstract:We analyze 11 Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array and Swift observations of the black hole X-ray binary GX. 339-4. in the hard state, 6 of which were taken during the end of the 2015 outburst and 5 during a failed outburst in 2013. These observations cover luminosities from 0.5% to 5% of the Eddington luminosity. Implementing the most recent version of the reflection model relxillCp, we perform simultaneous spectral fits on both data sets to track the evolution of the properties in the accretion disk, including the inner edge radius, the ionization, and the temperature of the thermal emission. We also constrain the photon index and electron temperature of the primary source (the "corona"). We observe a maximum truncation radius of 37 R-g in the preferred fit for the 2013 data set, and a marginal correlation between the level of truncation and luminosity. We also explore a self-consistent model under the framework of coronal Comptonization, and find consistent results regarding the disk truncation in the 2015 data, providing a more physical preferred fit for the 2013 observations.
Reinstating the M31 X-ray system RX J0042.3+4115 as a black hole X-ray binary, and compelling evidence for an extended corona

Abstract:The M31 X-ray source RX J0042.3+4115 was originally identified as a black hole binary because it displayed characteristic low state variability at conspicuously high luminosities; unfortunately, this variability was later found to be artificial. However, analysis of 84 Chandra ACIS observations, an HST ACS/WFC observation, and a 60 ks XMM-Newton observation has supplied new evidence that RX J0042.3+4115 is indeed a black hole binary. The brightest optical star within 3 sigma of the position of RX J0042.3+4115 had a F435W (~B) magnitude of 25.4+/-0.2; M_B > -0.4, hence we find a low mass donor likely. RX J0042.3+4115 was persistently bright over ~12 years. Spectral fits revealed characteristic black hole binary states: a low/hard state at 2.08+/-0.08 E+38 erg/s, and a steep power law state at 2.41+/-0.05 E+38 erg/s (0.3--10 keV). The high luminosity low state suggests a ~20 M_Sun primary; this is high, but within the range of known stellar black hole masses. The inner disk temperature during the steep power law state is 2.24$\pm$0.15 keV, high but strikingly similar to that of GRS 1915+105, the only known Galactic black hole binary with a low mass donor t o be persistently bright. Therefore RX J0042.3+4115 may be an analog for GRS 1915+105; however, other mechanisms may account for its behavior. We find compelling evidence for an extended corona during the steep power law state, because compact corona models where the seed photons for Comptonization are tied to the inner disc temperature are rejected.

Abstract:We perform broadband (0.7–100 keV) spectral analysis of five hard state observations of the low-mass black hole X-ray binary GX 339–4 taken by AstroSat during the rising phase of three outbursts from 2019 to 2022. We find that the outburst in 2021 was the only successful/full outburst, while the source was unable to make the transition to the soft state during the other two outbursts in 2019 and 2022. Our spectral analysis employs two different model combinations, requiring two separate Comptonizing regions and their associated reflection components and soft X-ray excess emission. The harder Comptonizing component dominates the overall bolometric luminosity, while the softer one remains relatively weak. Our spectral fits indicate that the disk evolves with the source luminosity, where the inner disk radius decreases with increasing luminosity. However, the disk remains substantially truncated throughout all the observations at the source luminosity of ∼2%–8%× of the Eddington luminosity. We note that our assumption of the soft X-ray excess emission as disk blackbody may not be realistic, and this kind of soft excess may arise due the nonhomogeneity in the disk/corona geometry. Our temporal analysis deriving the power density spectra suggests that the break frequency increases with the source luminosity. Furthermore, our analysis demonstrates a consistency between the inner disk radii estimated from the break frequency of the power density spectra and those obtained from the reflection modeling, supporting the truncated disk geometry in the hard state.

A high Eddington-ratio, true Seyfert 2 galaxy candidate: implications for broad-line-region models

Abstract:A bright, soft X-ray source was detected on 2010 July 14 during an XMM--Newton slew at a position consistent with the galaxy GSN 069 (z=0.018). Previous ROSAT observations failed to detect the source and imply that GSN 069 is now >240 times brighter than it was in 1994 in the soft X-ray band. We report here results from a ~1 yr monitoring with Swift and XMM-Newton, as well as from optical spectroscopy. GSN 069 is an unabsorbed, ultra-soft source in X-rays, with no flux detected above ~1 keV. The soft X-rays exhibit significant variability down to timescales of hundreds of seconds. The UV-to-X-ray spectrum of GSN 069 is consistent with a pure accretion disc model which implies an Eddington ratio of ~0.5 and a black hole mass of ~ 1.2 million solar masses. A new optical spectrum, obtained ~3.5 months after the XMM-Newton slew detection, is consistent with earlier spectra and lacks any broad line component, classifying the source as a Seyfert 2 galaxy. The lack of cold X-ray absorption and the short timescale variability in the soft X-rays rule out a standard Seyfert 2 interpretation of the X-ray data. We discuss our results within the framework of two possible scenarios for the broad-line-region (BLR) in AGN, namely the two-phase model (cold BLR clouds in pressure equilibrium with a hotter medium), and models in which the BLR is part of an outflow, or disc-wind. Finally, we point out that GSN 069 may be a member of a population of super-soft AGN whose SED is completely dominated by accretion disc emission, as it is the case in some black hole X-ray binary transients during their outburst evolution. The disc emission for a typical AGN with larger black hole mass than GSN 069 does not enters the soft X-ray band, so that GSN 069-like objects would likely be missed by current X-ray surveys, or mis-classified as Compton-thick candidates. Rapid optical and X-ray timing observations of GX 339-4: flux correlations at the onset of a low/hard state

Abstract:We present the discovery of optical/X-ray flux correlations on rapid timescales in the low/hard state of the Galactic black hole GX 339-4. The source had recently emerged from outburst and was associated with a relatively-faint counterpart with mag V~17. The optical (VLT/ULTRACAM) and X-ray (RXTE/PCA) data show a clear positive cross-correlation function (CCF) signal, with the optical peak lagging X-rays by ~ 150 ms, preceded by a shallow rise and followed by a steep decline along with broad anti-correlation dips. Examination of the light curves shows that the main CCF features are reproduced in superpositions of flares and dips. The CCF peak is narrow and the X-ray auto-correlation function (ACF) is broader than the optical ACF, arguing against reprocessing as the origin for the rapid optical emission. X-ray flaring is associated with spectral hardening, but no corresponding changes are detected around optical peaks and dips. The variability may be explained in the context of synchrotron emission with interaction between a jet and a corona. The complex CCF structure in GX 339-4 has similarities to that of another remarkable X-ray binary XTE J1118+480, in spite of showing a weaker maximum strength. Such simultaneous multi-wavelength, rapid timing studies provide key constraints for modeling the inner regions of accreting stellar sources.

Is the black hole in GX 339-4 really spinning rapidly?

Abstract:The wide-band Suzaku spectra of the black hole binary GX 339-4, acquired in 2007 February during the Very High state, were reanalyzed. Effects of event pileup (significant within ~ 3' of the image center) and telemetry saturation of the XIS data were carefully considered. The source was detected up to ~ 300$ keV, with an unabsorbed 0.5--200 keV luminosity of ~3.8 10^{38} erg/s at 8 kpc. The spectrum can be approximated by a power-law of photon index 2.7, with a mild soft excess and a hard X-ray hump. When using the XIS data outside 2' of the image center, the Fe-K line appeared extremely broad, suggesting a high black hole spin as already reported by Miller et al. (2008) based on the Suzaku data and other CCD data. When the XIS data accumulation is further limited to >3' to avoid event pileup, the Fe-K profile becomes narrower, and there appears a marginally better solution that suggests the inner disk radius to be 5-14 times the gravitational radius (1-sigma), though a maximally spinning black hole is still allowed by the data at the 90% confidence level. Consistently, the optically-thick accretion disk is inferred to be truncated at a radius 5-32 times the gravitational radius. Thus, the Suzaku data allow an alternative explanation without invoking a rapidly spinning black hole. This inference is further supported by the disk radius measured previously in the High/Soft state.

A ionized reflecting skin above the accretion disk of GX 349+2

Abstract:The broad emission features in the Fe-Kalpha region of X-ray binary spectra represent an invaluable probe to constrain the geometry and the physics of these systems. Several Low Mass X-ray binary systems (LMXBs) containing a neutron star (NS) show broad emission features between 6 and 7 keV and most of them are nowi nterpreted as reflection features from the inner part of an accretion disk in analogy to those observed in the spectra of X-ray binary systems containing a Black Hole candidate. The NS LMXB GX 349+2 was observed by the XMM-Newton satellite which allows, thanks to its high effective area and good spectral resolution between 6 and 7 keV, a detailed spectroscopic study of the Fe-Kalpha region. We study the XMM data in the 0.7-10 keV energy band. The continuum emission is modelled by a blackbody component plus a multicolored disk blackbody. A very intense emission line at 1 keV, three broad emission features at 2.63, 3.32, 3.9 keV and a broader emission feature in the Fe-Kalpha region are present in the residuals. The broad emission features above 2 keV can be equivalently well fitted with Gaussian profiles or relativistic smeared lines (diskline in XSPEC). The Fe-Kalpha feature is better fitted using a diskline component at 6.76 keV or two diskline components at 6.7 and 6.97 keV, respectively. The emission features are interpreted as resonant transitions of S xvi, Ar xviii, Ca xix, and highly ionized iron. Modelling the line profiles with relativistic smeared lines, we find that the reflecting plasma is located at less than 40 km from the NS, a value compatible with the inner radius of the accretion disk inferred from the multicolored disk blackbody component ($24 \pm 7$ km). The inclination angle of GX 349+2 is between 40 and 47 deg.

Heart Rate Variability: Measures and Models

Abstract:We focus on various measures of the fluctuations of the sequence of intervals between beats of the human heart, and how such fluctuations can be used to assess the presence or likelihood of cardiovascular disease. We examine sixteen such measures and their suitability for correctly classifying heartbeat records of various lengths as normal or revealing the presence of cardiac dysfunction, particularly congestive heart failure. Using receiver-operating-characteristic analysis we demonstrate that scale-dependent measures prove substantially superior to scale-independent ones. The wavelet-transform standard deviation at a scale near 32 heartbeat intervals, and its spectral counterpart near 1/32 cycles/interval, turn out to provide reliable results using heartbeat records just minutes long. We further establish for all subjects that the human heartbeat has an underlying stochastic origin rather than arising from a chaotic attractor. Finally, we develop a mathematical point process that emulates the human heartbeat time series for both normal subjects and heart-failure patients.

The spectral ratios between the periods with type-B QPO and those with broad-band noise are significantly different from that with type-B QPO and without type-B QPO, where the ratios (type-B QPO/broad-band noise) show a maximum at around 4 keV and then decrease gradually towards high energies. Finally, we discuss the possible change of the geometry of the inner accretion flow and/or jet during the transitions.

X-ray Spectral and Timing Properties of the Black Hole Binary XTE J1859+226 and their Relation to Jets

Abstract:We compiled the X-ray and soft gamma-ray observations of the Galactic black hole binary XTE J1859+226 in the 1999--2000 outburst from RXTE, ASCA, BeppoSAX and CGRO. Throughout systematic spectral analysis using a two-component model consisting of a multi-temperature accretion disk plus a fraction of its flux convolved with an empirical Comptonized powerlaw component, we found that the innermost radius ($r_{\rm in}$) and temperature (Tin) of the disk are very variable with time in the rising phase of soft X-ray flux where Type-A/B/C low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were found. After this phase, $r_{\rm in}$ remains constant at around 60 km assuming a distance of 8 kpc and an inclination angle of 67$^{\circ}$, and Tin smoothly decays with time. The constant $r_{\rm in}$ suggests a presence of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), with $r_{\rm in}$ repeatedly moving closer and farther away from the ISCO in the rising phase. Both disk parameters are remarkably correlated with independently analyzed timing properties such as QPO frequency and rms variability. Type-A/B QPOs are seen only when $r_{\rm in}$ is close to the ISCO, while Type-C are seen when $r_{\rm in}$ is truncated and the frequency changes with a relation of $r^{-1.0}_{\rm in}$, supporting that Type-C QPOs occur at the inner edge of the truncated disk. Accurate determinations of the frequency--$r_{\rm in}$ relation for various objects should be a powerful tool to discriminate plausible Type-C QPO models. Furthermore, we suggest that jet ejection events may occur when $r_{\rm in}$ rapidly approaches to the ISCO, along with rapid changes of the disk flux, the rms variability and the hardness ratio. A rapid shrinkage of $r_{\rm in}$ down to the ISCO can be a useful index as a precursor of radio flares for triggering Target-of-Opportunity observations and would provide constraints on jet launching mechanisms.

Abstract:Abstract We present a comprehensive spectro-temporal analyses of recurrent outbursting black hole sources GX 339−4 and H 1743−322 using available AstroSat and NuSTAR archival observations during 2016 − 2024. The nature of the outburst profiles of both sources are examined using long-term MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT lightcurves, and failed as well as successful outbursts are classified. Wide-band (0.5 − 60 keV) spectral modelling with disc (diskbb) and Comptonized (Nthcomp) components indicates that GX 339−4 transits from hard (kTbb = 0.12 − 0.77 keV, Γnth = 1.54 − 1.74 and Lbol = 0.91 − 11.56% LEdd) to soft state (kTin [ ≈ kTbb] = 0.82 − 0.88 keV, Γnth = 1.46 − 3.26, $L_{\rm {bol}}=19.59-30.06~{{\%}}L_{\rm Edd}$) via intermediate state (kTin [ ≈ kTbb] = 0.56 − 0.88 keV, Γnth = 1.76 − 2.66, $L_{\rm {bol}}=2.90-16.09~{{\%}}L_{\rm Edd}$), whereas H 1743−322 transits from quiescent to hard state (Γnth = 1.57 − 1.71, $L_{\rm {bol}}=2.08-3.48~{{\%}}L_{\rm Edd}$). We observe type-B and type-C Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in GX 339−4 with increasing frequencies (0.10 − 5.37 Hz) along with harmonics. For H 1743−322, prominent type-C QPOs are observed in frequency range 0.22 − 1.01 Hz along with distinct harmonics. Energy-dependent power spectral studies reveal that fundamental QPO and harmonics disappear beyond 20 keV in GX 339−4, whereas fundamental QPO in H 1743−322 persists up to 40 keV. We also observe that type-C ${\rm QPO}_{\rm rms}\%$ decreases with energy for both sources although such variations appear marginal for type-B QPOs. Additionally, we report non-monotonic behavior of photon index with plasma temperature and detection of annihilation line. Finally, we discuss the relevance of the observational findings in the context of accretion dynamics around black hole binaries.

Abstract:Understanding the dynamics behind black hole state transitions and the changes they reflect in outbursts has become long-standing problem. The X-ray reflection spectrum describes the interaction between the hard X-ray source (the power-law continuum) and the cool accretion disc it illuminates, and thus permits an indirect view of how the two evolve. We present a systematic analysis of the reflection spectrum throughout three outbursts (500+ observations) of the black hole binary GX 339-4, representing the largest study applying a self-consistent treatment of reflection to date. Particular attention is payed to the coincident evolution of the power-law and reflection, which can be used to determine the accretion geometry. The hard state is found to be distinctly reflection weak, however the ratio of reflection to power-law gradually increases as the source luminosity rises. In contrast the reflection is found dominate the power-law throughout most of the soft state, with increasing supremacy as the source decays. We discuss potential dynamics driving this, favouring inner disc truncation and decreasing coronal height for the hard and soft states respectively. Evolution of the ionisation parameter, power-law slope and high-energy cut-off also agree with this interpretation.

Accretion Geometry of GX 339-4 in the Hard State: AstroSat View

Abstract:We perform broadband ($0.7-100$ keV) spectral analysis of five hard state observations of the low-mass back hole X-ray binary GX~339--4 taken by AstroSat during the rising phase of three outbursts from $2019$ to $2022$. We find that the outburst in 2021 was the only successful/full outburst, while the source was unable to make transition to the soft state during the other two outbursts in 2019 and 2022. Our spectral analysis employs two different model combinations, requiring two separate Comptonizing regions and their associated reflection components, and soft X-ray excess emission. The harder Comptonizing component dominates the overall bolometric luminosity, while the softer one remains relatively weak. Our spectral fits indicate that the disk evolves with the source luminosity, where the inner disk radius decreases with increasing luminosity. However, the disk remains substantially truncated throughout all the observations at the source luminosity of $\sim2-8\%\times$ of the Eddington luminosity. We note that our assumption of the soft X-ray excess emission as disk blackbody may not be realistic, and this kind of soft excess may arise due the non-homogeneity in the disk/corona geometry. Our temporal analysis deriving the power density spectra suggests that the break frequency increases with the source luminosity. Furthermore, our analysis demonstrates a consistency between the inner disk radii estimated from break frequency of the power density spectra and those obtained from the reflection modelling, supporting the truncated disk geometry in the hard state.
