Abstract:NGC 5128, as the nearest large elliptical (D similar to 3.5 Mpc), is an excellent galaxy for studies of extragalactic globular clusters (GCs). We present the spatial distribution and kinematics of 207 GCs in NGC 5128, making this one of the largest samples of spectroscopically confirmed GCs. We have also identified a young stellar tidal stream in the halo. This stream contains a 350 Myr old star cluster that may be a proto-GC.

Abstract:We have performed a spectroscopic study of globular clusters (GCs) in the nearest giant elliptical NGC 5128 using the 2dF facility at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We obtained integrated optical spectra for a total of 254 GCs, 79 of which are newly confirmed on the basis of their radial velocities and spectra. In addition, we obtained an integrated spectrum of the galaxy starlight along the southern major axis. We derive an empirical metallicity distribution function (MDF) for 207 GCs (∼14 per cent of the estimated total GC system) based upon Milky Way GCs. This MDF is multimodal at high statistical significance with peaks at [Z/H] ∼ - 1.3 and -0.5. A comparison between the GC MDF and that of the stellar halo at 20 kpc (∼4R e ) reveals close coincidence at the metal-rich ends of the distributions. However, an inner 8-kpc stellar MDF shows a clear excess of metal-rich stars when compared to the GCs. We compare a higher signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) subsample (147 GCs) with two stellar population models which include non-solar abundance ratio corrections. The vast majority of our sample (∼90 per cent) appears old, with ages similar to the Milky Way GC system. There is evidence for a population of intermediate-age (∼4-8 Gyr) GCs (≤15 per cent of the sample) which are on average more metal-rich than the old GCs. We also identify at least one younger cluster (∼ 1-2 Gyr) in the central regions of the galaxy. Our observations are consistent with a picture where NGC 5128 has undergone at least two mergers and/or interactions involving star formation and limited GC formation since z = 1, however the effect of non-canonical hot stellar populations on the integrated spectra of GCs remains an outstanding uncertainty in our GC age estimates.

Abstract:We present a study of the nearby postmerger giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), in which we use the properties of its globular cluster (GC) and planetary nebula (PN) systems to constrain its evolution. Using photometric and spectroscopic data for 215 GCs presented in Paper I, we study trends in age, metallicity, and kinematics for the GC system. We confirm that the GC metallicity distribution is bimodal and show that these two subpopulations have different properties. Using spectral line index measurements of the brightest clusters, we show that the metal-poor GCs have old ages like the Milky Way globular clusters while the metal-rich GCs have Hβ line strengths that could be interpreted as a mean age of ~5 Gyr. Both populations appear to have [Mg/Fe] ratios consistent with that of the Galactic GC system, although this quantity is not very well constrained. The kinematics of the metal-rich GCs are similar to those of the planetary nebulae, exhibiting significant rotation about a misaligned axis, while the metal-poor GCs have a higher velocity dispersion and show a weaker kinematic correlation with the field stars. The total gravitating mass of NGC 5128 derived from the GCs is in excellent agreement with the value derived from stellar (PN) kinematics. We suggest that these and other data support a picture in which the main body of NGC 5128 was formed 3-8 Gyr ago by the dissipational merger of two unequal-mass disk galaxies supplemented by the continual accretion of both gas-rich and gas-poor satellites.

Abstract:We present velocity dispersion measurements of 14 globular clusters in NGC 5128 (Centarus A) obtained with the MIKE echelle spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan Clay telescope. These clusters are among the most luminous globular clusters in NGC 5128 and have velocity dispersions comparable to the most massive clusters known in the Local Group, ranging from 10 to 30 km s-1. We describe in detail our cross-correlation measurements, as well as simulations to quantify the uncertainties. These 14 globular clusters are the brightest NGC 5128 globular clusters with surface photometry and structural parameters measured from the Hubble Space Telescope. We have used these measurements to derive masses and mass-to-light ratios for all of these clusters and establish that the fundamental plane relations for globular clusters extend to an order-of-magnitude higher mass than in the Local Group. The mean mass-to-light ratio for the NGC 5128 clusters is ~3 ± 1, higher than measurements for all but the most massive Local Group clusters. These massive clusters begin to bridge the mass gap between the most massive star clusters and the lowest mass galaxies. We find that the properties of NGC 5128 globular clusters overlap quite well with the central properties of nucleated dwarf galaxies and ultracompact dwarf galaxies. As six of these clusters also show evidence for extratidal light, we hypothesize that at least some of these massive clusters are the nuclei of tidally stripped dwarfs.

Abstract:As the nearest giant elliptical galaxy, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) is an excellent place to use globular clusters (GCs) and host galaxy field stars to study galaxy evolution. We have performed a detailed investigation of this galaxy, comparing field star kinematics with the metallicities, ages, and kinematics of GCs. We used our sample of 780 planetary nebulae (PNe) to trace the kinematics of the field star population. Our survey for GCs bring the total number of confirmed GCs to 215. Using spectra of the brightest GCs to determine ages, we find that the metal-rich GCs have a mean age of approximately 4-5 Gyr, and that their kinematics are similar to those of the PNe. The metal-poor GCs have old ages similar to the Galactic GCs, and show a weaker kinematic correlation with the field stars. It is possible that NGC 5128 was formed by the merger of two or more disk galaxies at the time that the metal-rich clusters were formed.

Abstract:We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to study the globular cluster system of the Virgo Cluster ultradiffuse galaxy (UDG) VCC 615. We select globular cluster candidates through a combination of size and color, while simultaneously rejecting contamination from background galaxies that would be unresolved in ground-based imaging. Our sample of globular cluster candidates is essentially complete down to a limiting magnitude of F814W=24.0, approximately 90% down the globular cluster luminosity function. We estimate a total globular cluster population for VCC 615 of $N_{\rm GC}=25.1^{+6.5}_{-5.4}$, resulting in a specific frequency of $S_N=55.5^{+14.5}_{-12.0}$, quite high compared to normal galaxies of similar luminosity, but consistent with the large specific frequencies found in some other UDGs. The abundant cluster population suggests the galaxy is enshrouded by a massive dark halo, consistent with previous dynamical mass estimates using globular cluster kinematics. While the peak of the globular cluster luminosity function appears slightly brighter than expected (by approximately 0.3-0.5 mag), this difference is comparable to the 0.3 mag uncertainty in the measurement, and we see no sign of an extremely luminous population of clusters similar to those detected in the UDGs NGC1054-DF2 and -DF4. However, we do find a relatively high fraction ($32^{+5}_{-4}$%) of large clusters with half-light radii greater than 9 pc. The galaxy's offset nucleus appears photometrically distinct from the globular clusters, and is more akin to ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) in Virgo. Over time, VCC 615's already diffuse stellar body may be further stripped by cluster tides, leaving the nucleus intact to form a new Virgo UCD.

Abstract:New, deep HST photometry allowed us to identify and study eight compact and bright ( M V ≤ −5.8) star clusters in the outskirts of the star-forming isolated dwarf galaxy NGC 5238 ( M * ≃ 10 8 M ⊙). Five of these clusters are new discoveries, and six appear projected onto and/or aligned with the tidal tails recently discovered around this galaxy. The clusters are partially resolved into stars, and their colour magnitude diagrams reveal a well-developed red giant branch, implying ages older than 1–2 Gyr. Their integrated luminosity and structural parameters are typical of classical globular clusters, and one of them, with M V = −10.56 ± 0.07, is as bright as ω Cen, the brightest globular cluster in the Milky Way. Since the properties of this cluster are in the range spanned by those of nuclear star clusters we suggest that it may be the nuclear remnant of the disrupted satellite of NGC 5238 that produced the observed tidal tails.

Abstract:We present the results of combined optical and near-infrared photometry for the globular cluster systems of the giant ellipticals IC 4051 and NGC 3311. We use the reduced age-metallicity degeneracy in (V-I) vs.(V-H) color-color diagrams to derive the cumulative age distribution within the red sub-population of globular clusters and to search for age sub-populations. The age distribution is then compared to the one determined for simulated globular cluster systems in order to set constraints on the relative age and size of these globular cluster sub-populations. In both galaxies we find a significant fraction of globular clusters with ages between 2- 5 Gyr. We also investigate the metallicity distribution in both systems. Small number statistics prevent us from making any definite statements concerning NGC 3311, but we find that the derived metallicity distribution of the IC 4051 clusters strongly depends on the assumed age distribution. Based on our most likely result that finds a large number of young/intermediate age clusters (~2 Gyr) within the selected globular cluster sample, we find metallicity peaks at $\sim$ -0.2 for the old clusters and +0.8 for the young clusters. Only few very metal poor clusters are found. However, the metallicity distribution within the young/intermediate globular cluster population is significantly affected by our choice of the applied Single Stellar Population model. The mean metallicity of the second generation of globular clusters changes from the above mentioned and extremely high +0.8 dex to +0.2 dex. Note that the model dependency becomes less severe with an increasing age of the cluster population.

Abstract:Abstract We report the discovery of 23 globular cluster (GC) candidates around the relatively isolated dwarf galaxy IC 2574 within the Messier 81 (M81) group, at a distance of 3.86 Mpc. We use observations from the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to analyse the imaging in the F814W and F555W broadband filters. Our GC candidates have luminosities ranging from −5.9 ≥ MV ≥ −10.4 and half-light radii of 1.4 ≤ rh ≤ 11.5 pc. We find the total number of GCs (NGC) = 27 ± 5 after applying completeness corrections, which implies a specific frequency of SN = 4.0 ± 0.8, consistent with expectations based on its luminosity. The GC system appears to have a bimodal colour distribution, with 30 per cent of the GC candidates having redder colours. We also find 5 objects with extremely blue colours that could be young star clusters linked to an intense star formation episode that occurred in IC 2574 ∼1 Gyr ago. We make an independent measurement of the halo mass of IC 2574 from its kinematic data, which is rare for low mass galaxies, and find log M200 = 10.93 ± 0.08. We place the galaxy on the well-known GC system mass-halo mass relation and find that it agrees well with the observed near-linear relation. IC 2574 has a rich GC population for a dwarf galaxy, which includes an unusually bright ω Cen-like GC, making it an exciting nearby laboratory for probing the peculiar efficiency of forming massive GCs in dwarf galaxies.

Abstract:We present the results of a photometric and spectroscopic survey of the globular cluster (GC) system of NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), a galaxy whose proximity makes it an important target for early-type galaxy studies. We imaged three fields in UBVRI that extend 50 and 30 kpc along the major and minor axes, respectively. We used both color and size information to develop efficient selection criteria for differentiating between star clusters and foreground stars. In total, we obtained new velocities for 138 globular clusters, nearly tripling the number of known clusters, and bringing the confirmed total in NGC 5128 to 215. We present a full catalog of all known GCs, with their positions, photometry, and velocities. In addition, we present catalogs of other objects observed, such as foreground stars, background galaxies, three Galactic white dwarfs, seven background QSOs, and 52 optical counterparts to known X-ray point sources.We also report an observation of the cluster G169, in which we confirm the existence of a bright emission line object. This object, however, is unlikely to be a planetary nebula, but may be a supernova remnant.
Globular Clusters around Galaxies in Groups

Abstract:We have obtained deep photometry of NGC 1199 (in the compact group HCG 22) and NGC 6868 (in the Telescopium loose group) with the Keck II and the ESO VLT-I telescopes. Each galaxy is the optically brightest galaxy of its group. NGC 1199 has two companion galaxies at a median projected distance of only 33 kpc and, based on its peculiar internal structure and large X-ray halo, NGC 6868 has been proposed to be a merger remnant. Our analysis of B and R images uncovered a population of globular clusters around both galaxies, with total (and local) specific frequency SN = 3.6 ± 1.8 (3.4 ± 1.5) for NGC 1199 and SN = 1.8 ± 1.1 (0.8 ± 0.4) for NGC 6868. The radial profile of the globular clusters of NGC 1199 follows the light distribution of the galaxy and can be fitted by a power law and a core model with a very steep slope (α = 2.5 ± 0.3). In the case of NGC 6868, the profile of the globular clusters is well fitted by a power law and a core model profile of slope 1.4 ± 0.3 and is shallower than the galaxy light distribution. Maximum likelihood fitting of two Gaussians to the globular cluster color distribution yields a high significance for multimodality, with peaks centered at (B-R)0 = 1.13 ± 0.04 and 1.42 ± 0.04 (NGC 1199) and (B-R)0 = 1.12 ± 0.07 and 1.42 ± 0.07 (NGC 6868). NGC 1199 and NGC 6868 are good examples of galaxies in which the group environment is likely to have affected their dynamical evolution. We find that for NGC 1199 the properties of the globular cluster system are similar to those for other systems around external elliptical galaxies located in less dense environments but with a very steep radial profile. In the case of NGC 6868, we find a regular radial profile and color distribution and a comparatively low specific frequency for the globular cluster system of the galaxy.

Abstract:We have conducted a wide-field optical survey of NGC 5128 (Cen A), the nearest large elliptical galaxy (3.5 Mpc). From UBVRI imaging and spectroscopic follow-up, we have identified and obtained kinematics for 125 new globular clusters out to a projected radius of 40 kpc. We also extend our survey of field star kinematics in NGC 5128, and now possess a total of 736 radial velocities for planetary nebulae out to a projected radius of 80 kpc.•The PNe sample along the photometric major axis shows significant rotational support out to 80 kpc.•The blue globular clusters seem to possess little or no angular momentum.•The kinematics of the red globular cluster sample show some evidence for rotation around an axis common to that of the field stars.
The Stellar and Dark Matter Halo of Ngc 5128

Abstract:Extragalactic planetary nebulae (PNe) and globular clusters (GCs) are complementary tools for obtaining kinematic information on stellar populations in the outer halos elliptical galaxies. NGC 5128, as the nearest large elliptical (D ~ 3.5 Mpc), is an excellent galaxy for halo studies. We have now identified a total of 1140 PNe, and possess radial velocities for 736 PNe at distances out to 80 and 50 kpc along the photometric axes. There is clear evidence for kinematic axis twisting (triaxiality) in the PNe velocity field. The mass of NGC 5128 continues to rise out to 80 kpc, where M(< 80 kpc) ~ 6.4 x 1011M⊙ with M80/LB ~ 20. We also conducted a new survey for GCs out to 50 and 30 kpc, and now have radial velocities for 188 GCs (125 new). Both the red and blue GC systems exhibit rotation. The red (metal-rich) GCs share a misaligned kinematic axis with the PNe. The success of this survey bodes well for future galaxy halo studies.
Dynamical Evidence For A Massive, Young Globular Cluster In Ngc 15691

Abstract:Recent high-resolution observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) reveal that star clusters of extraordinary luminosity and compactness are commonly found in a variety of starburst systems. There has been much speculation that these clusters represent present-day analogs of young globular clusters. Using the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck 10 m telescope, we obtained high-dispersion optical spectra of one of the ''super star clusters'' (cluster ''A'') in the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 1569. The size of the cluster is known from published HST images. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion (sigma* = 15.7 +/- 1.5 km s(-1)) has been measured from a cross-correlation analysis of its integrated spectrum at visual wavelengths. If the cluster is gravitationally bound and the velocities are isotropic, application of the virial theorem implies that the cluster has a total stellar mass of (3.3 +/- 0.5) x 10(5) M(.). This object's mass, mass density, and probable mass-to-light ratio after aging 10-15 Gyr are fully consistent with the typical values of Galactic globular clusters. Our result strongly suggests that at least some of the luminous, compact, young star clusters being discovered with HST will indeed evolve into normal globular clusters of the type seen in the Milky Way.

Abstract:Globular Clusters are remarkable witnesses of their host galaxy’s interaction and merger history. Our aim is to perform the photometric analysis of the Globular Cluster System of the giant elliptical NGC 4696, the brightest member of Centaurus, a rich and dynamically young galaxy cluster. We obtained deep Magellan $6.5$ m/MegaCam ($g'$, $r'$, $i'$) photometry, with which we identified a sample of $3818$ stellar clusters around NGC 4696 that are analyzed in the context of possible interactions and its assembly history. After carefully modeling and subtracting the galaxy light, we used selection criteria based on the shape, colors and magnitudes to identify globular cluster candidates. We find a number of features that indicate a disturbed Globular Cluster System that point towards a complex evolution with other neighbouring members of Centaurus. Formally, two subpopulations could be found at $(g'-i')_0 = 0.763 0.004$ and $(g'-i')_0=1.012 0.004$. Moreover, the color distribution does not show the presence of a significant blue-tilt, but it presents a trend with radius, where at small galactocentric distances a unimodal distribution is preferable to a bimodal one, suggesting the presence of an intermediate globular cluster population. Besides the color distribution, also the metallicity distribution shows a bimodal trend, with peaks at Fe/H 0.010$ and Fe/H 0.012$. The radial density profiles show different slopes for the blue and red populations and the azimuthal distributions are well fitted by an asymmetrical sinusoidal function, with peaks projecting towards two nearby galaxies, NGC 4696B and NGC 4709, indicating past interactions among these three galaxies. Finally, we derive a globular cluster specific frequency of $S_N=6.8 0.9$, in good agreement with the values obtained for other giant ellipticals and with previously estimated $S_N$ of NGC 4696. All these results point toward a complex globular cluster system, strongly influenced by the interaction history of NGC 4696 with the other galaxies of the Centaurus cluster. In a future work, the spectroscopic follow-up of the globular cluster candidates analyzed in this study and broadening the photometric baseline will allow us to highlight the formation and evolution of the entire Centaurus cluster.

Abstract:We present new radial velocity measurements from the Magellan and the Anglo-Australian Telescopes for 174 previously known and 122 newly confirmed globular clusters (GCs) around NGC 5128, the nearest accessible massive early-type galaxy at D=3.8 Mpc. Remarkably, 28 of these newly confirmed GCs are at projected radii >50' ($\gtrsim 54$ kpc), extending to $\sim 130$ kpc, in the outer halo where few GCs had been confirmed in previous work. We identify several subsets of GCs that spatially trace halo substructures that are visible in red giant branch star maps of the galaxy. In some cases, these subsets of GCs are kinematically cold, and may be directly associated with and originate from these specific stellar substructures. From a combined kinematic sample of 645 GCs, we see evidence for coherent rotation at all radii, with a higher rotation amplitude for the metal-rich GC subpopulation. Using the tracer mass estimator, we measure a total enclosed mass of $2.5\pm0.3 \times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$ within $\sim 120$ kpc, an estimate that will be sharpened with forthcoming dynamical modeling. The combined power of stellar mapping and GC kinematics makes NGC 5128 an ongoing keystone for understanding galaxy assembly at mass scales inaccessible in the Local Group.

Abstract:We present the results of a photometric study of the early-type galaxy NGC 6876 and the surrounding globular cluster system (GCS). The host galaxy is a massive elliptical, the brightest of this type in the Pavo Group. According to its intrinsic brightness (M_v~-22.7), it is expected to belong to a galaxy cluster instead of a poor group. Observational material consists of g', r', i' images obtained with the Gemini/GMOS camera. The selected globular cluster (GC) candidates present a clear bimodal colour distribution at different galactocentric radii, with mean colours and dispersions for the metal-poor ("blue") and metal-rich ("red") typical of old GCs. The red subpopulation dominates close to the galaxy centre, in addition to the radial projected distribution showing that they are more concentrated towards the galaxy centre. The azimuthal projected distribution shows an overdensity in the red subpopulation in the direction of a trail observed in X-ray that could be evidence of interactions with its spiral neighbour NGC 6872. The turn-over of the luminosity function gives an estimated distance modulus (m - M)~ 33.5 and the total population amounts to 9400 GCs, i.e. a quite populous system. The halo mass obtained using the number ratio (i.e. the number of GCs with respect to the baryonic and dark mass) gives a total of ~10^13, meaning it is a very massive galaxy, given the environment.
