Abstract:Improper Lorentz Transformations can be retained as exact symmetries of Nature if the particle content and gauge group of the Standard Model are doubled. The resulting ``Exact Parity Model (EPM)'' sees each ordinary particle paired with a mirror analogue. If neutrinos have mass and if they mix, then the EPM predicts that each ordinary neutrino will be maximally mixed with its mirror neutrino partner. This provides a very simple explanation for the very large mixing angle observed for atmospheric muon neutrinos by SuperKamiokande and other experiments. Maximal mixing for electron neutrinos is also well motivated by the solar neutrino problem. If small interfamily mixing is switched on, then the LSND anomaly can also be accomodated by the EPM. The EPM thus provides a unified, simple and to some extent predictive framework for explaining all of the anomalous neutrino data. This talk will briefly review the EPM or mirror neutrino scenario.

Revisiting primordial neutrino asymmetries, spectral distortions and cosmological constraints with full neutrino transport

Abstract:The primordial neutrino asymmetry leave profound imprints on the evolution history of the universe, which can be constrained by cosmological observations, including Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), and Large-Scale Structure (LSS). We present comprehensive analysis on implications and constraints of the primordial neutrino asymmetry $\xi_\nu$, based on a precise treatment of neutrino decoupling by solving the complete (anti)neutrino quantum kinetic equations in the Closed-Time-Path formalism. The effective number of neutrinos $ N_{\rm eff}$ and (anti)neutrino spectral distortions are calculated, and we find that the non-instantaneous decoupling correction is given by $\delta N_{\rm eff} = 0.0440 + 0.0102 \, \xi_\nu^2$. Then we perform the state-of-the-art calculation for the abundance of light elements including (anti)neutrino spectral distortions, which indicate a positive asymmetry $0.032 \leq \xi_\nu \leq 0.052$ from EMPRESS data. The implications of the neutrino asymmetry for the CMB and LSS are studied in detail, and we find that the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are also significantly affected by $\xi_\nu$ in addition to the sum of neutrino masses. A combined analysis with EMPRESS BBN, Planck CMB and BOSS BAO data yields a tighter constraint $\xi_\nu = 0.024 \pm 0.012$, which provides constraints on UV models capable of producing large asymmetries.

Neutron oscillations for solving neutron lifetime and dark matter puzzles

Abstract:A model of $n-n'$ (neutron-mirror neutron) oscillations is proposed under the framework of the mirror matter theory with slightly broken mirror symmetry. It resolves the neutron lifetime discrepancy, i.e., the 1% difference in neutron lifetime between measurements from "beam" and "bottle" experiments. In consideration of the early universe evolution, the $n-n'$ mass difference is determined to be about $2\times 10^{-6}$ eV/c$^2$ with the $n-n'$ mixing strength of about $2\times 10^{-5}$. The picture of how the mirror-to-ordinary matter density ratio is evolved in the early universe into the observed dark-to-baryon matter density ratio of about 5.4 is presented. Reanalysis of previous data and new experiments that can be carried out under current technology are discussed and recommended to test this proposed model. Other consequences of the model on astrophysics and possible oscillations of other neutral particles are discussed as well.

Abstract:By numerically solving the quantum kinetic equations we compute the range of parameters where the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_s$ oscillation solution to the atmospheric neutrino anomaly is consistent with a stringent big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) bound of $N_{eff}^{BBN} \stackrel{<}{\sim} 3.6$. We show that this requires tau neutrino masses in the range $m_{\nu_\tau} \stackrel {>}{\sim} 4 eV$ (for $|\delta m^2_{atm}| = 10^{-2.5} eV^2$). We discuss the implications of this scenario for hot+cold dark matter, BBN, and the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background.

Abstract:We perform a study of the flavour evolution in the early universe of a multi-flavour active-sterile neutrino system with parameters inspired by the short-baseline neutrino anomalies. In a neutrino-symmetric bath a "thermal" population of the sterile state would quickly grow, but in the presence of primordial neutrino asymmetries a self-suppression as well as a resonant sterile neutrino production can take place, depending on temperature and chosen parameters. In order to characterize these effects, we go beyond the usual average momentum and single mixing approximations and consider a multi-momentum and multi-flavour treatment of the kinetic equations. We find that the enhancement obtained in this case with respect to the average momentum approximation is significant, up to \sim 20 % of a degree of freedom. Such detailed and computationally demanding treatment further raises the asymmetry values required to significantly suppress the sterile neutrino production, up to large and preferentially net asymmetries |L_{\nu}| > O(10^{-2}). For such asymmetries, however, the active-sterile flavour conversions happen so late that significant distortions are produced in the electron (anti)neutrino spectra. The larger |L_{\nu}|, the more the impact of these distortions takes over as dominant cosmological effect, notably increasing the 4 He abundance in primordial nucleosynthesis (BBN). The standard expression of the primordial yields in terms of the effective number of neutrinos and asymmetries is also greatly altered. We numerically estimate the magnitude of such effects for a few representative cases and comment on possible implications for forthcoming cosmological measurements.

Abstract:Using a new sample of extremely metal poor systems, the EMPRESS survey has recently reported a primordial helium abundance that is 3σ smaller than the prediction from the standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) scenario. This measurement could be interpreted as a hint for a primordial lepton asymmetry in the electron neutrino flavor. Motivated by the EMPRESS results, we present a comprehensive analysis of the lepton asymmetry using measurements of the abundances of primordial elements, along with cosmic microwave background (CMB) data from Planck. Assuming that there is no dark radiation in our Universe, we find an electron neutrino chemical potential ξνe=0.043±0.015 , which deviates from zero by 2.9σ . If no assumption is made on the abundance of dark radiation in the Universe, the chemical potential is ξνe=0.046±0.021 , which deviates from zero by 2.2σ . We also find that this result is rather insensitive to the choice of nuclear reaction rates. If the true helium abundance corresponds to the EMPRESS central value, future CMB observations from the Simons Observatory and CMB-S4 will increase the significance for a nonzero lepton asymmetry to 4σ and 5σ respectively, assuming no dark radiation, or to 3σ when no assumption is made on the abundance of dark radiation. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.107.035024 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Dark Matter in A Mirror Solution to the Strong CP Problem

Abstract:We study thermal production of dark matter (DM) in a realization of the minimal models of Ref.~\cite{Bonnefoy:2023afx}, where parity is used to solve the strong CP problem by transforming the entire Standard Model (SM) into a mirror copy. Although the mirror electron $e^{\prime}$ is a good DM candidate, its viability is mired by the presence of the mirror up-quark $u^{\prime}$, whose abundance is intimately related to the $e^{\prime}$ abundance and must be suppressed. This can be achieved through a sequential freeze-in mechanism, where mirror photons are first produced from SM gluons, and then the mirror photons produce $e'$. After computing the details of this double freeze-in, we discuss the allowed parameter space of the model, which lies at the threshold of experimental observations. We find that this origin of $e'$ DM requires a low reheating temperature after inflation and is consistent with the baryon asymmetry arising from leptogenesis, providing mirror neutrinos have a significant degeneracy. Finally, we show that this $e'$ DM is not compatible with Higgs Parity, the simplest scheme with exact parity, unless SM parameters deviate significantly from their central values or the minimal model is extended.

Abstract:Energy-dependent solar neutrino flux reduction caused by the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) effect is applied to the Exact Parity Model. Several scenarios are possible, depending on the region of parameter space chosen. The interplay between intergenerational MSW transitions and vacuum ``intragenerational'' ordinary-mirror neutrino oscillations is discussed. Expectations for the ratio of charged to neutral current event rates at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) are estimated. The implications of the various scenarios for the Boron neutrino energy spectrum and BOREXINO are briefly discussed. The consequences of MSW-induced solar neutrino depletion within the Exact Parity Model differ in interesting ways from the standard $\nu_e - \nu_{\mu, \tau}$ and $\nu_e - \nu_s$ cases. The physical causes of these differences are determined.

Implications of neutrino species number and summed mass measurements in cosmological observations

Abstract:We confront measurable neutrino degrees of freedom $N_{\rm eff}$ and summed neutrino mass in the early universe to particle physics at the energy scale beyond the standard model (BSM), in particular including the issue of neutrino mass type distinction. The Majorana-type of massive neutrino is perfectly acceptable by Planck observations, while the Dirac-type neutrino may survive in a restricted class of models that suppresses extra right-handed contribution to $\Delta N_{\rm eff} = N_{\rm eff} - 3$ at a nearly indistinguishable level from the Majorana case. There is a chance that supersymmetry energy scale may be identified in supersymmetric extension of left-right symmetric model if improved $N_{\rm eff}$ measurements discover a finite value. Combined analysis of this quantity with the summed neutrino mass helps to determine the neutrino mass ordering pattern, if measurement accuracy of order, $60 \sim 80\,$meV, is achieved, as in CMB-S4.

Signatures of a Parity-Violating Universe

Abstract:What would a parity-violating universe look like? We present a numerical and theoretical study of mirror asymmetries in the late universe, using a new suite of $N$-body simulations: QUIJOTE-Odd. These feature parity-violating initial conditions, injected via a simple ansatz for the imaginary primordial trispectrum and evolved into the non-linear regime. We find that the realization-averaged power spectrum, bispectrum, halo mass function, and matter PDF are not affected by our modifications to the initial conditions, deep into the non-linear regime, which we argue arises from rotational and translational invariance. In contrast, the parity-odd trispectrum of matter (measured using a new estimator), shows distinct signatures proportional to the parity-violating parameter, $p_{\rm NL}$, which sets the amplitude of the primordial trispectrum. We additionally find intriguing signatures in the angular momentum of halos, with the primordial trispectrum inducing a non-zero correlation between angular momentum and smoothed velocity field, proportional to $p_{\rm NL}$. Our simulation suite has been made public to facilitate future analyses.

Constraints on primordial lepton asymmetries with full neutrino transport

Abstract:Primordial neutrino-antineutrino asymmetries can be constrained through big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) relic abundances and cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, both observables being sensitive to neutrino properties. The latter constraint, which is due to gravitational effects from all neutrino flavors, is very minute since it is at least quadratic in the asymmetries. On the contrary, the constraints from primordial abundances presently dominate, although these abundances are almost only sensitive to the electron flavor asymmetry. It is generally assumed that neutrino asymmetries are sufficiently averaged by flavor oscillations prior to BBN, which allows to constrain a common primordial neutrino asymmetry at the epoch of BBN. This simplified approach suffers two caveats that we deal with in this article, combining a neutrino evolution code and BBN calculation throughout the MeV era. First, flavor "equilibration" is not true in general, therefore an accurate dynamical evolution of asymmetries is needed to connect experimental observables to the primordial asymmetries. Second, the approximate averaging of asymmetries through flavor oscillations is associated to a reheating of the primordial plasma. It is therefore crucial to correctly describe the interplay between flavor equilibration and neutrino decoupling, as an energy redistribution prior to decoupling does not significantly alter the final effective number of neutrino species' value. Overall, we find that the space of allowed initial asymmetries is generically unbound when using currently available primordial abundances and CMB measurements. We forecast constraints using future CMB experiment capabilities, which should reverse this experimental misfortune.

Cosmic Neutrino Decoupling and its Observable Imprints: Insights from Entropic-Dual Transport

Abstract:Very different processes characterize the decoupling of neutrinos to form the cosmic neutrino background (C$\nu$B) and the much later decoupling of photons from thermal equilibrium to form the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The C$\nu$B emerges from the fuzzy, energy-dependent neutrinosphere and encodes the physics operating in the early universe in the temperature range $T\sim 10\,{\rm MeV}$ to $T\sim10\,{\rm keV}$. This is the epoch where beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics may be influential in setting the light element abundances and the necessarily distorted fossil neutrino energy spectra. Here we use techniques honed in extensive CMB studies to analyze the C$\nu$B as calculated in detailed neutrino energy transport and nuclear reaction simulations. Our moment method, relative entropy, and differential visibility approach can leverage future high precision CMB and primordial abundance measurements to provide new insights into the C$\nu$B and any BSM physics it encodes. We demonstrate that the evolution of the energy spectrum of the C$\nu$B throughout the weak decoupling epoch is accurately captured in the Standard Model by only three parameters per species, a non-trivial conclusion given the deviation from thermal equilibrium. Furthermore, we can interpret each of the three parameters as physical characteristics of a non-equilibrium system. The success of our compact description within the Standard Model motivates its use also in BSM scenarios. We demonstrate how observations of primordial light element abundances can be used to place constraints on the C$\nu$B energy spectrum, deriving response functions that can be applied for general C$\nu$B spectral distortions. Combined with the description of those deviations that we develop here, our methods provide a convenient and powerful framework to constrain the impact of BSM physics on the C$\nu$B.

A Naturally Light Sterile neutrino in an Asymmetric Dark Matter Model

Abstract:A recently proposed asymmetric mirror dark matter model where the mirror sector is connected with the visible one by a right handed neutrino portal, is shown to lead naturally to a 3+1 active-sterile neutrino spectrum, if the portal consists only of two right handed neutrinos. At the tree level the model has four massless neutrino states, three active and one sterile. The active neutrinos pick up tiny masses via the minimal radiative inverse seesaw mechanism at the one loop level. The loop effects also generate the large solar and atmospheric mixings, as well as the observed reactor mixing for certain range of parameters of the model. The dominant contribution to the sterile neutrino mass ($\sim$ eV) arises from the gravitationally induced dimension-5 operators. Generating active-sterile mixing requires a two Higgs doublet extension of SM and a small mixing between the ordinary and mirror Higgs fields, which occurs naturally in mirror models.

Neutrino-Dark Sector Equilibration and Primordial Element Abundances

Abstract:After neutrinos decouple from the photon bath, they can populate a thermal dark sector. If this occurs at a temperature above ~100 keV, this can have measurable impacts on light element abundances. We calculate light element abundances in this scenario, studying the impact from rapid cooling of the Standard Model neutrinos, and from an increase in the number of relativistic degrees of freedom $N_{\rm{eff}}$, which can occur in the presence of a mass threshold. We incorporate these changes in the publicly available BBN code PRIMAT, using the reaction networks from PRIMAT and from the BBN code PArthENoPE, to calculate Y$_{\rm{P}}$ and D/H. We provide limits from the two different reaction networks as well as with expanded errors to include both results. If electron neutrinos significantly participate in the cooling, we find limits down to temperatures as low as 100 keV. If electron neutrinos are weakly participating (for instance if only the mass eigenstate $\nu_3$ equilibrates), cooling places no limits. However, if the dark sector undergoes a "step" in $N_{\rm{eff}}$, there can be additional, $\omega_b$-dependent constraints. These limits can vary from strong (for low values of $\omega_b$) to a mild preference for new physics (for high values of $\omega_b$). Future analyses including upcoming CMB data should improve these limits.

Indications for a Nonzero Lepton Asymmetry from Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies

Abstract:The recent measurement of helium-4 from the near-infrared spectroscopy of extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) by the Subaru Survey may point to a new puzzle in the Early Universe. We exploit this new helium measurement together with the percent-level determination of primordial deuterium, to assess indications for a non-vanishing lepton asymmetry during the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) era, paying particular attention to the role of uncertainties in the nuclear reaction network. A cutting-edge Bayesian analysis focused on the role of the newly measured EMPGs, jointly with information from the Cosmic Microwave Background, suggests the existence of a nonzero lepton asymmetry at around the $2 \sigma$ level, providing a hint for cosmology beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We discuss conditions for a large total lepton asymmetry to be consistently realized in the Early Universe.
