Abstract:The aim of this paper is to construct new topological invariants of compact oriented 3-manifolds and of framed links in such manifolds. Our invariant of (a link in) a closed oriented 3-manifold is a sequence of complex numbers parametrized by complex roots of 1. For a framed link in S 3 the terms of the sequence are equale to the values of the (suitably parametrized) Jones polynomial of the link in the corresponding roots of 1. Thus, for links in S 3 our invariants are essentially equivalent to the Jones polynomial [Jo]. Note that in general we do not know if our invariant of (a framed link in) a closed oriented 3-manifold may be described as the sequence of values of a certain polynomial in the roots of unity. In the case of manifolds with boundary our invariant is a (sequence of) finite dimensional complex linear operators. This produces from each root of unity q a 3-dimensional topological quantum field theory (see [A1]). In particular, for each q we associate with every closed oriented surface a finite dimensional complex linear space. We construct a projective action of the modular group of the surface in this space. Our constructions have been partially inspired by the ideas of E. Witten [Wi] who considered quantum field theory defined by the nonabelian ChernSimons action and applied it to study the topology of 3-manifolds. Using this quantum field theory, Witten has defined (on the physical level of rigor) certain invariants of 3-manifolds and links in 3-manifolds. The constructions of Witten strongly suggested that there may exist a parallel mathematical theory. We believe that our invariants may be viewed as a mathematical realization of the Witten's program.
Obstruction theory for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index of $4$-manifolds

Abstract:We develop a complete obstruction theory for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index of a compact connected 4-dimensional manifold with free involution. This $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index, equal to the minimum integer $n$ for which there exists an equivariant map with target the $n$-sphere with antipodal involution, is computed in two steps using cohomology with twisted coefficients. The key ingredient is a spectral sequence computing twisted cohomology of the orbit space of a free involution on odd complex projective spaces. We illustrate the main results with various examples including computation of the secondary obstruction.

Abstract:To formulate the universal constraints of quantum statistics data of generic long-range entangled quantum systems, we introduce the geometric-topology surgery theory on spacetime manifolds where quantum systems reside, cutting and gluing the associated quantum amplitudes, specifically in 2+1 and 3+1 spacetime dimensions. First, we introduce the fusion data for worldline and worldsheet operators capable of creating anyonic excitations of particles and strings, well-defined in gapped states of matter with intrinsic topological orders. Second, we introduce the braiding statistics data of particles and strings, such as the geometric Berry matrices for particle-string Aharonov-Bohm, 3-string, 4-string, or multi-string adiabatic loop braiding process, encoded by submanifold linkings, in the closed spacetime 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds. Third, we derive new `quantum surgery' formulas and constraints, analogous to Verlinde formula associating fusion and braiding statistics data via spacetime surgery, essential for defining the theory of topological orders, 3d and 4d TQFTs and potentially correlated to bootstrap boundary physics such as gapless modes, extended defects, 2d and 3d conformal field theories or quantum anomalies. This article is meant to be an extended and further detailed elaboration of our previous work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05951" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05951">arXiv:1602.05951</a>] and Chapter 6 of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05569" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05569">arXiv:1602.05569</a>]. Our theory applies to general quantum theories and quantum mechanical systems, also applicable to, but not necessarily requiring the quantum field theory description.

Abstract:This is an invited contribution to the 2nd edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics. We give an overview of 3-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) and the corresponding quantum invariants of 3-manifolds. We recall the main algebraic concepts and constructions, such as modular and spherical fusion categories, the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev and Turaev-Viro theories, and the relation between these two TQFTs. We also briefly discuss generalizations of these constructions by providing a (non-exhaustive) review of some recent works on 3-dimensional extended TQFTs, defect TQFTs, homotopy QFTs, and non-semisimple TQFTs.

Abstract:This paper proves quantum modularity of both functions from $\mathbb{Q}$ and $q$-series associated to the closed manifold obtained by $-1/2$ surgery on the figure-eight knot, $4_1(-1,2)$. In a sense, this is a companion to work of Garoufalidis-Zagier where similar statements were studied in detail for some simple knots. It is shown that quantum modularity for closed manifolds provides a unification of Chen-Yang's volume conjecture with Witten's asymptotic expansion conjecture. Additionally we show that $4_1(-1,2)$ is a counter-example to previous conjectures relating the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant and the $\widehat{Z}(q)$ series. This could be reformulated in terms of a "strange identity", which gives a volume conjecture for the $\widehat{Z}$ invariant. Using factorisation of state integrals, we give conjectural but precise $q$-hypergeometric formulae for generating series of Stokes constants of this manifold. We find that the generating series of Stokes constants is related to the 3d index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov of $4_1(-1,2)$ proposed by Gang-Yonekura. This extends the equivalent conjecture of Garoufalidis-Gu-Mariño for knots to closed manifolds. This work appeared in a similar form in the author's thesis.

3-Alterfolds and Quantum Invariants

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the concept of 3-alterfolds with embedded separating surfaces. When the separating surface is decorated by a spherical fusion category, we obtain quantum invariants of 3-alterfold, which is consistent with many topological moves. These moves provide evaluation algorithms for various presentations of 3-alterfold, e.g. Heegaard splittings, triangulations, link surgeries. In particular, we obtain quantum invariants of 3-manifolds containing surfaces, generalizing those of 3-manifolds containing framed links. Moreover, in this framework, we topologize fundamental algebraic concepts. For instance, we implement the Drinfeld center by tube diagrams as a blow up of framed links. The topologized center leads to a quick proof of the equality between the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants and the Turaev-Viro invariants for spherical fusion categories. In addition, we topologize half-braiding, $S$-matrix and the generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators, etc. In particular, the latter leads to a quick topological proof of the equivariance of the generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators.

Non-semisimple topological field theory and $\widehat{Z}$-invariants from $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$

Abstract:We construct three dimensional non-semisimple topological field theories from the unrolled quantum group of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$. More precisely, the quantum group depends on a root of unity $q=e^{\frac{2 \pi \sqrt{-1}}{r}}$, where $r$ is a positive integer greater than $2$, and the construction applies when $r$ is not congruent to $4$ modulo $8$. The algebraic result which underlies the construction is the existence of a relative modular structure on the non-finite, non-semisimple category of weight modules for the quantum group. We prove a Verlinde formula which allows for the computation of dimensions and Euler characteristics of topological field theory state spaces of unmarked surfaces. When $r$ is congruent to $\pm 1$ or $\pm 2$ modulo $8$, we relate the resulting $3$-manifold invariants with physicists' $\widehat{Z}$-invariants associated to $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$. Finally, we establish a relation between $\widehat{Z}$-invariants associated to $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ and $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$ which was conjectured in the physics literature.

Abstract:In canonical quantum gravity, when space is a compact manifold with boundary there is a Hamiltonian given by an integral over the boundary. Here we compute the action of this `boundary Hamiltonian' on observables corresponding to open Wilson lines in the new variables formulation of quantum gravity. In cases where the boundary conditions fix the metric on the boundary (e.g., in the asymptotically Minkowskian case) one can obtain a finite result, given by a `shift operator' generating translations of the Wilson line in the direction of its tangent vector. A similar shift operator serves as the Hamiltonian constraint in Morales-Técotl and Rovelli's work on quantum gravity coupled to Weyl spinors. This suggests the appearance of an induced field theory of Weyl spinors on the boundary, analogous to that considered in Carlip's work on the statistical mechanics of the 2+1-dimensional black hole.

Abstract:In topology, a torus remains invariant under certain nontrivial transformations known as modular transformations. In the context of topologically ordered quantum states of matter supported on a torus geometry in real space, these transformations encode the braiding statistics and fusion rules of emergent anyonic excitations and thus serve as a diagnostic of topological order. Moreover, modular transformations of higher genus surfaces, e.g., a torus with multiple handles, can enhance the computational power of a topological state, in many cases providing a universal fault-tolerant set of gates for quantum computation. However, due to the intrusive nature of modular transformations, which abstractly involve global operations, physical implementations of them in local systems have remained elusive. Here, we show that by engineering an effectively folded manifold corresponding to a multilayer topological system, modular transformations can be applied in a single shot by independent local unitaries, providing a novel class of transversal logical gates for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Specifically, we demonstrate that multilayer topological states with appropriate boundary conditions and twist defects allow modular transformations to be effectively implemented by a finite sequence of local SWAP gates between the layers. We further provide methods to directly measure the modular matrices, and thus the fractional statistics of anyonic excitations, providing a novel way to directly measure topological order. A more general theory of transversal gates and the deep connection to anyon symmetry transformation and symmetry-enriched topological orders are also discussed.

Abstract:A quantum algorithm for approximating efficiently 3--manifold topological invariants in the framework of SU(2) Chern-Simons-Witten (CSW) topological quantum field theory at finite values of the coupling constant k is provided. The model of computation adopted is the q-deformed spin network model viewed as a quantum recognizer in the sense of Wiesner and Crutchfield, where each basic unitary transition function can be efficiently processed by a standard quantum circuit. This achievement is an extension of the algorithm for approximating polynomial invariants of colored oriented links found in Refs 2,3. Thus all the significant quantities - partition functions and observables - of quantum CSW theory can be processed efficiently on a quantum computer, reflecting the intrinsic, field-theoretic solvability of such theory at finite k. The paper is supplemented by a critical overview of the basic conceptual tools underlying the construction of quantum invariants of links and 3-manifolds and connections with algorithmic questions that arise in geometry and quantum gravity models are discussed.

Abstract:Yu and Rohan (1) are to be commended for their comprehensive literature review of the mitogenic and apoptotic actions of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and of the epidemiologic evidence incriminating elevated levels of circulating IGF with excess risks of breast, colorectal, prostate, and other cancers. This evidence is supported by the excess risks of breast and colon cancers in persons with acromegaly that are associated with increased IGF levels (2). In conclusion, Yu and Rohan (1) emphasized “the feasibility and validity of implementing dietary interventions to reduce IGF levels with the goal of preventing cancer.” However, Yu and Rohan appear to be unaware of the fact that, since 1984, most of the nation’s milk supply has been contaminated with excess IGF levels resulting from the injection of cows with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) to increase milk yields (3). Moreover, a substantial proportion of IGF in milk from rBGH-injected cows is in a more bioactive, unbound, protein-free form than is IGF in milk from untreated cows (4). In short-term oral administration experiments in rodents (5,6), IGF resists pasteurization and digestion, is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and has growth-promoting effects. Furthermore, converging lines of experimental and epidemiologic evidence (6) have incriminated excess IGF levels in rBGH milk as risk factors for breast and colon cancers. Confirmation of these concerns by an international expert committee prompted the January 2000 European ban on the marketing and sale of rBGH milk (7). Avoidance of rBGH dairy products in favor of natural products would thus appear to be the most practical and immediate “dietary intervention to . . . [achieve] the goal of preventing cancer” (1).

Abstract:We develop a general framework for quantum field theory on noncommutative spaces, i.e., spaces with quantum group symmetry. We use the path integral approach to obtain expressions for $n$-point functions. Perturbation theory leads us to generalised Feynman diagrams which are braided, i.e., they have non-trivial over- and under-crossings. We demonstrate the power of our approach by applying it to $\phi^4$-theory on the quantum 2-sphere. We find that the basic divergent diagram of the theory is regularised.

Quantum geometric bound and ideal condition for Euler band topology

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between quantum geometry and topological invariants is a central problem in the study of topological states. In this work, we establish the relationship between the quantum metric and the Euler curvature in two-dimensional systems with space-time inversion $I_{ST}$ symmetry satisfying $I^2_{ST}=+1$. As $I_{ST}$ symmetry imposes the reality of the wave function with vanishing Berry curvature, the well-known inequality between the quantum metric and the Berry curvature is not meaningful in this class of systems. We find that the non-abelian quantum geometric tensor of two real bands exhibits an intriguing inequality between the off-diagonal Berry curvature and the quantum metric, which in turn gives the inequality between the quantum volume and the Euler invariant. Moreover, we show that the saturation condition of the inequality is deeply related to the ideal condition for Euler bands, which provides a criterion for the stability of fractional topological phases in interacting Euler bands. Our findings demonstrate the potential of the quantum geometry as a powerful tool for characterizing symmetry-protected topological states and their interaction effect.

Abstract:The orbifold construction via topological defects in quantum field theory can either be understood as a state sum construction internal to a given ambient theory, or as the procedure of (identifying and) gauging ordinary and "non-invertible" symmetries. Here we explain how this is rigorously understood in the case of topological QFTs. We provide various examples and outline general features, also of relevance for full QFT.

Abstract:Two singularity theorems can be proven if one attempts to let a Lorentzian cobordism interpolate between two topologically distinct manifolds. On the other hand, Cartier and DeWitt-Morette have given a rigorous definition for quantum field theories (qfts) by means of path integrals. This article uses their results to study whether qfts can be made compatible with topology changes. We show that path integrals over metrics need a finite norm for the latter and for degenerate metrics, this problem can sometimes be resolved with tetrads. We prove that already in the neighborhood of some cuspidal singularities, difficulties can arise to define certain qfts. On the other hand, we show that simple qfts can be defined around conical singularities that result from a topology change in a simple setup. We argue that the ground state of many theories of quantum gravity will imply a small cosmological constant and, during the expansion of the universe, will cause frequent topology changes. Unfortunately, it is difficult to describe the transition amplitudes consistently due to the aforementioned problems. We argue that one needs to describe qfts by stochastic differential equations, and in the case of gravity, by Regge calculus in order to resolve this problem.

Abstract:We introduce a framework for internal topological symmetries in quantum field theory, including "noninvertible symmetries" and "categorical symmetries". This leads to a calculus of topological defects which takes full advantage of well-developed theorems and techniques in topological field theory. Our discussion focuses on finite symmetries, and we give indications for a generalization to other symmetries. We treat quotients and quotient defects (often called "gauging" and "condensation defects"), finite electromagnetic duality, and duality defects, among other topics. We include an appendix on finite homotopy theories, which are often used to encode finite symmetries and for which computations can be carried out using methods of algebraic topology. Throughout we emphasize exposition and examples over a detailed technical treatment.

Abstract:We establish a noncommutative analogue of the first fundamental theorem of classical invariant theory. For each quantum group associated with a classical Lie algebra, we construct a noncommutative associative algebra whose underlying vector space forms a module for the quantum group and whose algebraic structure is preserved by the quantum group action. The subspace of invariants is shown to form a subalgebra, which is finitely generated. We determine generators of this subalgebra of invariants and determine their commutation relations. In each case considered, the noncommutative modules we construct are flat deformations of their classical commutative analogues. Our results are therefore noncommutative generalisations of the first fundamental theorem of classical invariant theory, which follows from our results by taking the limit as q -> 1. Our method similarly leads to a definition of quantum spheres, which is a noncommutative generalisation of the classical case with orthogonal quantum group symmetry.
