Abstract:Parton cascade models have been surprisingly successful in describing heavy-ion reactions at RHIC energies -- surprising because in spite of their QCD bells and whistles, they essentially embody classical many-particle dynamics. The procedure to determine the sequence of the binary parton interactions, however -- an essential aspect of all such models -- is by necessity a phenomenological (and somewhat arbitrary) feature of these codes. This has been recognized early on as a serious drawback of non-covariant cascade models. While in the Poincare-Covariant Parton Cascade code "pcpc" the interaction sequence is determined covariantly and thus is independent of the frame of reference in which the code is run, this alone does not solve the basic causality problems raised by such classical models. We discuss in detail all aspects of (Einstein) causality encountered in such parton cascade models.

Abstract:These lecture notes are a combination of two lectures and a contribution to the celebration of Andrzej Białas' birthday at the LI Cracow School of Theoretical Physics in June 2011. I here discuss the dynamics of particle production in high energy reactions. It includes parton cascades and hadronization in e+e--ann., small x evolution including the Double Leading Log approximation and the BFKL equation, saturation at high densities and the BK equation, and finally the Lund Dipole Cascade model for high energy collisions, which is implemented in the DIPSY MC.

Abstract:Cascade solutions of the Boltzmann equation suffer from causality violation at high densities and/or scattering cross sections. Although the particle subdivision technique can reduce the causality violation, it alters event-by-event correlations and fluctuations and is also computationally expensive. Here we evaluate and then improve the accuracy of the ZPC parton cascade for elastic scatterings inside a box without using parton subdivision. We first test different collision schemes for the collision times and ordering time and find that the default collision scheme does not accurately describe the equilibrium momentum distribution at large opacities. We then find a specific collision scheme that can describe very accurately the equilibrium momentum distribution as well as the time evolution towards equilibrium, even at large opacities. We also calculate the shear viscosity and the η/s ratio of the parton systems and confirm that the new collision scheme is more accurate. In addition, we use a novel parton subdivision method to obtain the “exact” evolution of the system. This subdivision method is valid for such box calculations and is so much more efficient than the standard subdivision method that we use a subdivision factor of 106 in this study.

Abstract:We introduce the parton cascade Alpaca , which evolves parton ensembles corresponding to single events according to the effective kinetic theory of QCD at high temperature formulated by Arnold, Moore and Yaffe by explicitly simulating elastic scattering, splitting and merging. By taking the ensemble average over many events the phase space density (as evolved by the Boltzmann equation) is recovered, but the parton cascade can go beyond the evolution of the mean because it can be turned into a complete event generator that produces fully exclusive final states including fluctuations and correlations. The parton cascade does not require the phase space density as input (except for the initial condition at the starting time). Rather, effective masses and temperature, which are functions of time and are defined as integrals over expressions involving the distribution function, are estimated in each event from just the parton ensemble of that event. We validate the framework by showing that ensembles sampled from a thermal distribution stay in thermal equilibrium even after running the simulation for a long time. This is a non-trivial result, because it requires all parts of the simulation to intertwine correctly.

Parton cascades at DLA: the role of the evolution variable

Abstract:The theoretical treatment of jet quenching lacks a full description of the interplay between vacuum-like emissions, usually formulated in momentum space, and medium induced ones that demand an interface with a space-time picture of the expanding medium and thus must be formulated in position space. In this work we build a toy Monte-Carlo parton shower ordered in formation time, virtual mass, and opening angle, which are equivalent at leading logarithmic accuracy. Aiming to explore a link with jet substructure, we compute the Lund plane distributions for the different ordering prescriptions. Further, we investigate the sensitivity of ordering prescriptions to medium effects by counting the number of events eliminated by a decoherence condition.

Thermalization and isotropization in the AMY parton cascade ALPACA

Abstract:We look at thermalization and isotropization processes in the newly introduced AMY QCD kinetic theory parton cascade ALPACA. For thermalization, we consider the case of overoccupied initial conditions, and study the time evolution of the distribution as it relaxes to thermal equilibrium. We find that the system thermalizes as expected compared to known analytical results. For anisotropic systems, we take a first look at the qualitative behaviour of isotropization for Color Glass Condensate-like initial conditions in a homogeneous box with periodic boundary conditions.

Abstract:We develop a parton and hadron cascade model paciae 3.0 based on pythia 6.428 and the paciae 2.2 program series for nuclear collisions. The original simulation framework composed of the initial partonic state, the partonic rescattering stage, hadronization stage, and the hadronic rescattering stage, is renamed a C-simulation framework for high-energy ( sNN≥3 GeV) nuclear collisions. A B-simulation framework without partonic rescattering is designed for the high-energy nuclear collisions, too. In addition, an A-simulation framework is introduced for the low-energy ( sNN<3 GeV) nuclear collisions, which is developed in the hadronic degree of freedom only. In the C-simulation framework, the parton-parton inelastic-scattering processes are implemented, the single-string structure and multiple-string interaction mechanisms are proposed to investigate the strangeness enhancement, and the phenomenological coalescence hadronization model is modified. With the model, the particle yield, transverse momentum distribution, and rapidity distribution resulted from A-simulation framework well reproduce the data measured at the FOPI and E895 experiments, and the results from B- and C-simulation frameworks are well consistent with the data measured at the energies of the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.108.064909 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:Understanding how momentum anisotropies arise in small collision systems is important for a quantitative understanding of collectivity in terms of QCD dynamics in small and large collision systems. In this letter we present results for small collision systems from the newly developed parton cascade \textsc{Alpaca}, which faithfully encodes the AMY effective kinetic theory. \textsc{Alpaca} reproduces quantitatively previously know results from a calculation in the single-hit approximation for small values of the coupling. We discuss in detail how such a comparison is to be carried out. Particularly at larger coupling a generic differences between the two approaches becomes apparent, namely that in parton cascades particles interact over a finite distance while in direct integrations of the Boltzmann equation the interactions are local. This leads to quantitative differences in the extracted values for the elliptic flow coefficient. These discrepancies appear in situations where the mean free path is not large compared to the interaction time and the applicability of kinetic theory is thus questionable.

Abstract:We introduce ALPACA, a Lorentz invariant parton cascade encoding the AMY effective kinetic theory of QCD at high temperatures. It solves the Boltzmann equation by explicitly simulating the evolution of parton ensembles corresponding to single events. We discuss how the effective masses and temperature entering the elastic collision and splitting/merging rates can be estimated from just a single event. We perform an extensive validation of the framework by showing that it reproduces the expected behaviour in thermal equilibrium.

Abstract:We develop a new 3 + 1 dimensional Monte Carlo cascade solving the kinetic on-shell Boltzmann equations for partons including the inelastic gg <-> ggg pQCD processes. The back reaction channel is treated - for the first time - fully consistently within this scheme. An extended stochastic method is used to solve the collision integral. The frame dependence and convergency are studied for a fixed tube with thermal initial conditions. The detailed numerical analysis shows that the stochastic method is fully covariant and that convergency is achieved more efficiently than within a standard geometrical formulation of the collision term, especially for high gluon interaction rates. The cascade is then applied to simulate parton evolution and to investigate thermalization of gluons for a central Au+Au collision at RHIC energy. For this study the initial conditions are assumed to be generated by independent minijets with p(T)> p(0)=2 GeV. With that choice it is demonstrated that overall kinetic equilibration is driven mainly by the inelastic processes and is achieved on a scale of 1 fm/c. The further evolution of the expanding gluonic matter in the central region then shows almost an ideal hydrodynamical behavior. In addition, full chemical equilibration of the gluons follows on a longer time scale of about 3 fm/c.

Abstract:I show that the parton physics related to correlations of quarks and gluons on the light cone can be studied through the matrix elements of frame-dependent, equal-time correlators in the large momentum limit. This observation allows practical calculations of parton properties on a Euclidean lattice. As an example, I demonstrate how to recover the leading-twist quark distribution by boosting an equal-time correlator to a large momentum.

Abstract:The emergence of parton model from field theory in the context of light-front current algebra and naive canonical manipulations is reviewed. Shortcomings of the naive canonical picture, especially concerning renormalization issues are discussed. To illustrate the novel aspects of the renormalization problem in light-front dynamics, the scaling behavior of different components of currents under the dual power counting is stressed. It is noted that the application of dual power counting to deep inelastic phenomena may provide a simple intuitive understanding of twist. Abstract:Significant efforts have recently been made in order to explain the spontaneous formation of large scale structures in hydrodynamical systems. Most of the theoretical works are based on the idea that instabilities are the source of the phenomenon. We are here interested in situations where structures develop at scales much larger than those of the instability and result from an inverse cascade. Classical examples are the inverse energy cascade in two-dimensional turbulence, which is driven by a negative viscosity (Kraichnan 1967,1976) and the inverse cascade of magnetic helicity in MHD flows, which is driven by the α-effect (Frisch, Léorat, Mazure and Pouquet 1975). A known deterministic example is the two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow (She 1987).

Abstract:Most observables measured at RHIC involve strongly interacting particles from the final hadronic stage. They carry, however, useful information on the properties of the partonic matter produced during the initial stage and its hadronization dynamics. For example, observed large elliptic flow of hadrons and their scaling according to the number of valence quarks in a hadron have provided strong evidence for the formation of an initial partonic matter that is strongly interacting and hadronizes via coalescence or recombination of quarks. In this paper, the relation between hadron anisotropic flow and that of produced partons is illustrated in terms of a multiphase transport model that includes interactions both in initial partonic and final hadronic matters as well as the transition between these two phases of matter.

Abstract:We report recent results from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model on the azimuthal anisotropies of particle momentum distributions in heavy ion collisions at the relativistic heavy ion collider. These include higher-order anisotropic flows and their scaling, the rapidity dependence of anisotropic flows and the elliptic flow of charm quarks.

Abstract:Within a pQCD inspired kinetic parton cascade we simulate the space time evolution of gluons which are produced initially in a heavy ion collision at RHIC energy. The inelastic gluonic interactions gg ↔ ggg do play an important role: For various initial conditions it is found that thermalization and the close to ideal fluid dynamical behaviour sets in at very early times. Special emphasis is put on color glass condensate initial conditions and the `bottom up thermalization' scenario. Off-equilibrium 3→ 2 processes make up the very beginning of the evolution leading to an initial decrease in gluon number and a temporary avalanche of the gluon momentum distribution to higher transversal momenta.

Abstract:We present a Poincaré covariant cascade algorithm based on the constrained Hamiltonian dynamics in an $8N$-dimensional phase space to simulate the Boltzmann-type two-body collision term. We compare this covariant cascade algorithm with traditional $6N$-dimensional phase-space cascade algorithms. To validate the covariant cascade algorithm, we perform box calculations. We examine the frame dependence of the algorithm in a one-dimensionally expanding system as well as the compression stages of colliding two nuclei. We confirm that our covariant cascade method is reliable to simulate high-energy nuclear collisions. Furthermore, we present Lorentz-covariant equations of motion for the $N$-body system interacting via potentials, which can be efficiently solved numerically.
