Abstract:We develop a new 3 + 1 dimensional Monte Carlo cascade solving the kinetic on-shell Boltzmann equations for partons including the inelastic gg <-> ggg pQCD processes. The back reaction channel is treated - for the first time - fully consistently within this scheme. An extended stochastic method is used to solve the collision integral. The frame dependence and convergency are studied for a fixed tube with thermal initial conditions. The detailed numerical analysis shows that the stochastic method is fully covariant and that convergency is achieved more efficiently than within a standard geometrical formulation of the collision term, especially for high gluon interaction rates. The cascade is then applied to simulate parton evolution and to investigate thermalization of gluons for a central Au+Au collision at RHIC energy. For this study the initial conditions are assumed to be generated by independent minijets with p(T)> p(0)=2 GeV. With that choice it is demonstrated that overall kinetic equilibration is driven mainly by the inelastic processes and is achieved on a scale of 1 fm/c. The further evolution of the expanding gluonic matter in the central region then shows almost an ideal hydrodynamical behavior. In addition, full chemical equilibration of the gluons follows on a longer time scale of about 3 fm/c.

Abstract:Within a pQCD inspired kinetic parton cascade we simulate the space time evolution of gluons which are produced initially in a heavy ion collision at RHIC energy. The inelastic gluonic interactions gg ↔ ggg do play an important role: For various initial conditions it is found that thermalization and the close to ideal fluid dynamical behaviour sets in at very early times. Special emphasis is put on color glass condensate initial conditions and the `bottom up thermalization' scenario. Off-equilibrium 3→ 2 processes make up the very beginning of the evolution leading to an initial decrease in gluon number and a temporary avalanche of the gluon momentum distribution to higher transversal momenta.

Abstract:A detailed investigation of the energy loss of gluons that traverse a thermal gluonic medium simulated within the perturbative QCD-based transport model BAMPS (a Boltzmann approach to multiparton scatterings) is presented in the first part of this work. For simplicity the medium response is neglected in these calculations. The energy loss from purely elastic interactions is compared with the case where radiative processes are consistently included based on the matrix element by Gunion and Bertsch. From this comparison, gluon multiplication processes gg -> ggg are found to be the dominant source of energy loss within the approach employed here. The consequences for the quenching of gluons with high transverse momentum in fully dynamic simulations of Au + Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energy of root s = 200A GeV are discussed in the second major part of this work. The results for central collisions as discussed in a previous publication are revisited, and first results on the nuclear modification factor R-AA for noncentral Au + Au collisions are presented. They show a decreased quenching compared to central collisions while retaining the same shape. The investigation of the elliptic flow v(2) is extended up to nonthermal transverse momenta of 10 GeV, exhibiting a maximum v(2) at roughly 4 to 5 GeV and a subsequent decrease. Finally the sensitivity of the aforementioned results on the specific implementation of the effective modeling of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect via a formation-time-based cutoff is explored.

Abstract:The space-time propagation of heavy quarks in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions is studied within the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach of MultiParton Scatterings (BAMPS). In this model heavy quarks interact with the partonic medium via binary scatterings. The cross sections for these interactions are calculated with leading order perturbative QCD, but feature a more precise Debye screening derived within the hard thermal loop approximation and obey the running of the coupling. Within this framework the elliptic flow and the nuclear modification factor of heavy quarks are computed for RHIC and LHC energies and compared to available experimental data. It is found that binary scatterings alone cannot reproduce the data and, therefore, radiative corrections have to be taken into account.

Abstract:QCD jets, produced copiously in heavy-ion collisions at LHC and also at RHIC, serve as probes of the dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Jet fragmentation in the medium is interesting in its own right and, in order to extract pertinent information about the QGP, it has to be well understood. We present a brief overview of the physics involved and argue that jet substructure observables provide new opportunities for understanding the nature of the modifications.

Thermalization of a jet wake in QCD kinetic theory

Abstract:We study the energy deposition of a high-momentum parton traveling through a Quark-Gluon Plasma using QCD kinetic theory. We show that the energy is first transported to the soft sector by collinear cascade and then isotropised by elastic scatterings. Remarkably, we find that the jet wake can be well described by a thermal distribution function with angle-dependent temperature. This could be used for effective phenomenological descriptions of jet thermalization in realistic heavy-ion collision simulations.

Abstract:In high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions, a transient state of thermalized, hot and dense matter governed by Quantum Chromodynamics is produced. Properties of this state are reflected in the bulk low transverse momentum (P_T) hadron production which represent the remnant of the collective medium as well as in modifications of so-called probes which are not part of the thermalized medium, i.e. jets generated in high P_T processes or leptons and photons which do not participate in the strong interaction. Theory effords aim at deducing the properties of QCD thermodynamics and collectivity from such observables.

Abstract:Fast thermalization, a subsequent strong buildup of elliptic flow of QCD matter and jet-quenching as found at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are understood as the consequence of perturbative QCD (pQCD) interactions within the 3+1 dimensional parton cascade BAMPS. The main contributions stem from pQCD inspired bremsstrahlung. Comparisons to Au+Au data of the flow parameter v_2 as a function of participation number as well as the gluonic contribution to the nuclear modification factor R_AA for most central collisions are given. Also the shear viscosity to entropy ratio is dynamically extracted, which lies in the range of 0.08-0.15, depending on the chosen coupling constant.

Abstract:The gluonic contribution to the nuclear modification factor R-AA is investigated for central Au + Au collisions at root s = 200 AGeV employing a perturbative QCD-based parton cascade including radiative processes. A flat quenching pattern is found up to transverse momenta of 30 GeV, which is slightly smaller compared with results from the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev formalism. We demonstrate that the present microscopic transport description provides a challenging means of investigating both jet quenching and a strong buildup of elliptic flow in terms of the same standard perturbative QCD interactions.

Abstract:The quark gluon plasma produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions exhibits remarkable features. It behaves like a nearly perfect liquid with a small shear viscosity to entropy density ratio and leads to the quenching of highly energetic particles. We show that both effects can be understood for the first time within one common framework. Employing the parton cascade Boltzmann approach to multiparton scatterings, the microscopic interactions and the space-time evolution of the quark gluon plasma are calculated by solving the relativistic Boltzmann equation. Based on cross sections obtained from perturbative QCD with explicitly taking the running coupling into account, we calculate the nuclear modification factor and elliptic flow in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. With only one single parameter associated with coherence effects of medium-induced gluon radiation, the experimental data of both observables can be understood on a microscopic level. Furthermore, we show that perturbative QCD interactions with a running coupling lead to a sufficiently small shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the quark gluon plasma, which provides a microscopic explanation for the observations stated by hydrodynamic calculations.

Abstract:The phenomenon of jet quenching provides essential information about the properties of hot and dense matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Recent results from experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) show evidence for an unexpectedly similar suppression of both light and heavy flavor jets. Furthermore, the role of radiative energy loss of heavy quarks is still under active discussion within the theoretical community. By employing the parton cascade Boltzmann Approach to Multi-Parton Scatterings(BAMPS), which numerically solves the 3 + 1D Boltzmann equation both for light and heavy flavor partons, we calculate the nuclear modification factor of inclusive and b-tagged reconstructed jets in 0-10% central root s(LHC)= 2.76ATeV Pb + Pb collisions. Based on perturbative QCD cross sections we find a suppression of both light and heavy flavor jets. While the inclusive jets are slightly too strong suppressed within Bamps in comparison with data, both elastic + radiative and only elastic interactions lead to a realistic b-tagged jet suppression. To further investigate light and heavy flavor energy loss we predict the R dependence of inclusive and b-tagged jet suppression. Furthermore, we propose the medium modification of b-tagged jet shapes as an observable for discriminating between different heavy quark energy loss scenarios. (C) 2017 The Authors. Abstract:We consider momentum broadening and energy loss of high momentum partons in a hot non-Abelian plasma due to collisions. We solve the coupled system of Wong-Yang-Mills equations on a lattice in real time, including binary hard elastic collisions among the partons. The collision kernel is constructed such that the total collisional energy loss and momentum broadening are lattice spacing independent. We find that the transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ corresponding to transverse momentum broadening receives sizable contributions from a power-law tail in the $p_\perp$-distribution of high-momentum partons. We establish the scaling of $\hat{q}$ and of $dE/dx$ with density, temperature and energy in the weak-coupling regime. We also estimate the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ due to elastic energy loss of a jet in a classical Yang-Mills field.

Abstract:The angular structure of collisional and radiative energy losses of a hard parton jet propagating through the quark-gluon plasma is analyzed. The possibility to observe the energy losses of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in dense QCD-matter (jet quenching) measuring the characteristics of real hadronic jets in ultra-relativistic collisions of nuclei is investigated. In particular, using calorimetric studies of jet + jet, gamma + jet and Z + jet channels is discussed.

Abstract:Nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC produce high temperature and high energy density matter which exhibits partonic degrees of freedom.We will discuss measurements of nuclear modification factors for light hadrons and non-photonic electrons from heavy quark decays,which reflect the flavor dependence of energy loss of high momentum partons traversing the dense QCD medium.The dense QCD medium responds to energy loss of high momentum partons in a pattern consistent with that expected from a hydrodynamic fluid.The hadronization of bulk partonic matter exhibits collectivity with effective partonic degrees of freedom.Nuclear collisions at RHIC provide an intriguing environment,where many constituent quark ingredients are readily available for possible formation of exotic particles through quark coalescence or recombinations.

Abstract:The main modification to high $p_t$ jets evolving in the quark gluon plasma is the depletion of their energy to the thermal background. Despite the prominent role played by energy loss effects in jet quenching, their theoretical description is still limited, being, to a large extent, driven by phenomenological considerations. As the field moves towards the measurement of multi-scale jet substructure observables, it is necessary to develop new field theoretic techniques to describe energy loss. In this letter, we highlight a formal similarity between energy loss, and the renormalization group based track function formalism for computing jet substructure observables on charged particles. We introduce an energy loss function, $L_i(x)$, tracking the energy fraction $x$ flowing from an initial hard parton $i$ down to the measured hadrons, and show that its renormalization group evolution can be studied in perturbative QCD, and is related to that of the track functions. The features of this new approach are illustrated in the computation of projected energy correlators, opening the window to a better theoretical treatment of these observables in heavy ion collisions.

Abstract:We look at thermalization and isotropization processes in the newly introduced AMY QCD kinetic theory parton cascade ALPACA. For thermalization, we consider the case of overoccupied initial conditions, and study the time evolution of the distribution as it relaxes to thermal equilibrium. We find that the system thermalizes as expected compared to known analytical results. For anisotropic systems, we take a first look at the qualitative behaviour of isotropization for Color Glass Condensate-like initial conditions in a homogeneous box with periodic boundary conditions.
