Abstract:We report our findings of a 1/f power spectrum for the total amount of sand in directed and undirected Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld models confined to narrow stripes and driven locally. The underlying mechanism for the 1/f noise in these systems is an exponentially long configuration memory giving rise to a very broad distribution of time scales. Both models are solved analytically with the help of an operator algebra to explicitly show the appearance of the long configuration memory.

Abstract:We study the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) and quantum anti-Zeno effect (QAZE) in a two-level system (TLS) interacting with an environment that has 1/f noise. Using a numerically exact method based on the thermofield dynamics theory and the matrix product states, we obtain exact evolutions of the TLS and bath (environment) under repetitive measurements at both zero and finite temperatures. At zero temperature, we observe a transition from a pure QZE in the short time scale to a QZE-QAZE crossover in the long time scale by considering the measurement-induced non-Markovian effect. At finite temperature, we exploit that the thermal fluctuation suppresses the decay of the survival probability in the short time scale, whereas it enhances the decay in the long time scale.

Abstract:We present a simple stochastic mechanism which generates pulse trains exhibiting a power law distribution of the pulse intervals and a $1/f^\alpha$ power spectrum over several decades at low frequencies with $\alpha$ close to one. The essential ingredient of our model is a fluctuating threshold which performs a Brownian motion. Whenever an increasing potential $V(t)$ hits the threshold, $V(t)$ is reset to the origin and a pulse is emitted. We show that if $V(t)$ increases linearly in time, the pulse intervals can be approximated by a random walk with multiplicative noise. Our model agrees with recent experiments in neurobiology and explains the high interpulse interval variability and the occurrence of $1/f^\alpha$ noise observed in cortical neurons and earthquake data.

Abstract:Using the well-known Olami-Feder-Christensen model as our paradigm, we show how to modify uniform driven self-organized critical models to generate $1/f^\alpha$ noise. Our model can reproduce all the main features of $1/f^\alpha$ noise: (1) $\alpha$ is close to one and does not depend on the dimension of the system. (2) The $1/f^\alpha$ behavior is found for very low frequencies. (3) The spatial correlations do not obey a power law. That proves that spatially extended systems based on activation-deactivation processes do not have to be point-driven to produce $1/f^\alpha$ noise. The essential ingredient is a local memory of the activation-deactivation process.

Abstract:We propose that memory effects in the conductivity of metallic systems can be produced by the same two levels systems that are responsible for the 1/f noise. Memory effects are extremely long-lived responses of the conductivity to changes in external parameters such as density or magnetic field. Using the quantum transport theory, we derive a universal relationship between the memory effect and the 1/f noise. Finally, we propose a magnetic memory effect, where the magneto-resistance is sensitive to the history of the applied magnetic field.

Abstract:We show that 1f noise of charge fluctuation at disordered surfaces follows naturally from random hopping of electrons among localized states. Computer models are proposed with hopping mechanisms simplified, and the occurrence of 1fα power spectrum is robust. The lifetime distribution of electrons is found to be D(τ) = τ−β and a connection between the lifetime distribution and the power spectrum is derived. It is shown that the 1f noise comes from random superposition of oscillatory spectra. We also define an generalized random walk model to act as the underlying mechanism of 1f noise in disordered systems.

Abstract:The problem of 1/f noise has been with us for about a century. Because it is so often framed in Fourier spectral language, the most famous solutions have tended to be the stationary long range dependent (LRD) models such as Mandelbrot's fractional Gaussian noise. In view of the increasing importance to physics of non-ergodic fractional renewal models, I present preliminary results of my research into the history of Mandelbrot's very little known work in that area from 1963-67. I speculate about how the lack of awareness of this work in the physics and statistics communities may have affected the development of complexity science, and I discuss the differences between the Hurst effect, 1/f noise and LRD, concepts which are often treated as equivalent.

Abstract:With the original Bak-Tang-Wisenefeld (BTW) sandpile we uncover the $1/\varphi$ noise in the mechanism maintaining self-organized criticality (SOC) - the question raised together with the concept of SOC. We posit that the dynamics of stress in the BTW sandpile follows quasi-cycles of graduate stress accumulation that end up with an abrupt stress-release and the drop of the system to subcritical state. In thermodynamic limit, the intra-cycle dynamics exhibits the $1/\varphi$ spectrum that extends infinitely and corresponds to the stress-release within the critical state.

Abstract:We provide evidence that for some values of the parameters a simple agent based model, describing herding behavior, yields signals with 1/f power spectral density. We derive a non-linear stochastic differential equation for the ratio of number of agents and show, that it has the form proposed earlier for modeling of 1/f^beta noise with different exponents beta. The non-linear terms in the transition probabilities, quantifying the herding behavior, are crucial to the appearance of 1/f noise. Thus, the herding dynamics can be seen as a microscopic explanation of the proposed non-linear stochastic differential equations generating signals with 1/f^beta spectrum. We also consider the possible feedback of macroscopic state on microscopic transition probabilities strengthening the non-linearity of equations and providing more opportunities in the modeling of processes exhibiting power-law statistics.

Abstract:Studying interacting fermions in one dimension at high energy, we find a hierarchy in the spectral weights of the excitations theoretically, and we observe evidence for second-level excitations experimentally. Diagonalizing a model of fermions (without spin), we show that levels of the hierarchy are separated by powers of R-2/L-2, where R is a length scale related to interactions and L is the system length. The first-level (strongest) excitations form a mode with parabolic dispersion, like that of a renormalized single particle. The second-level excitations produce a singular power-law line shape to the first-level mode and multiple power laws at the spectral edge. We measure momentum-resolved tunneling of electrons (fermions with spin) from or to a wire formed within a GaAs heterostructure, which shows parabolic dispersion of the first-level mode and well-resolved spin-charge separation at low energy with appreciable interaction strength. We find structure resembling the second-level excitations, which dies away quite rapidly at high momentum.

Abstract:Quantum Ising models in transverse magnetic fields are studied for a class of one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices (the generalized Fibonacci lattices). A unified trace map is obtained, which can be used to determine the energy spectra of quantum Ising models on generalized Fibonacci lattices. It is shown that the energy spectra are Cantor-like and the critical lines for the quasiperiodic Ising models are obtained.

Abstract:Using a simple cellular automaton model of data packets transport in the Internet, the travel times of data packets and transport rates of routers along a fixed path are studied. In this model the additive increasing of transport rates, extraneous random interferences and finite capacity of router are considered. Changing the mean injecting rate of data packets, numerical simulation results show that there exists free flow and congested phase characterized by the different power spectrum of the travel times and the transport rates. While the power spectrum of both the travel times and the transport rates show 1/f noise (power law) in the free flow, the power spectrum of the travel times is approximately characterized by 1/f noise at low frequencies and white noise at high frequencies, and that of transport rates of routers only by white noise in the congested phase. These results are in agreement with previous experimental data.

Abstract:In this paper, we review the 1/f-type noise properties of nanoelectronic devices focusing on three demonstrative platforms: resistive switching memories, graphene nanogaps and single-molecule nanowires. The functionality of such ultrasmall devices is confined to an extremely small volume, where bulk considerations on the noise lose their validity: the relative contribution of a fluctuator heavily depends on its distance from the device bottleneck, and the noise characteristics are sensitive to the nanometer-scale device geometry and details of the mostly non-classical transport mechanism. All these are reflected by a highly system-specific dependence of the noise properties on the active device volume (and the related device resistance), the frequency, or the applied voltage. Accordingly, 1/f-type noise measurements serve as a rich fingerprint of the relevant transport and noise-generating mechanisms in the studied nanoelectronic systems. Finally, we demonstrate that not only the fundamental understanding and the targeted noise suppression is fueled by the 1/f-type noise analysis, but novel probabilistic computing hardware platforms heavily seek well tailorable nanoelectric noise sources.

We find a signature of the 1 / f α noise for the local force with a nontrivial value of the spectral exponent 0 < α < 2 . We also examine temporal fluctuations in the position of the extremal site and a local activity signal. We present results for different local interaction rules of the model.

Abstract:We study the Bak-Sneppen evolution model on a regular hypercubic lattice in high dimensions. Recent work [ Phys. Rev. E 108 , 044109 (2023)] showed the emergence of the 1/fα noise for the fitness observable with α≈1.2 in one-dimension (1D) and α≈2 for the random neighbor (mean-field) version of the model. We examine the temporal correlation of fitness in 2, 3, 4, and 5 dimensions. As obtained by finite-size scaling, the spectral exponent tends to take the mean-field value at the upper critical dimension Du=4 , which is consistent with previous studies. Our approach provides an alternative way to understand the upper critical dimension of the model. Interacting Two-Level Systems as a Source of 1/f Charge Noise in Quantum Dot Qubits

Abstract:Charge noise in semiconducting quantum dots has been observed to have a 1/f spectrum. We propose a model in which a pair of quantum dots are coupled to a 2D bath of fluctuating two level systems (TLS) that have electric dipole moments and that interact with each other, i.e., with the other fluctuators. These interactions are primarily via the elastic strain field. We use a 2D nearest-neighbor Ising spin glass to represent these elastic interactions and to simulate the dynamics of the bath of electric dipole fluctuators in the presence of a ground plane representing metal gates above the oxide layer containing the fluctuators. The interactions between the TLS cause the energy splitting of individual fluctuators to change with time. We calculate the resulting fluctuations in the electric potential at the two quantum dots that lie below the oxide layer. We find that 1/f electric potential noise spectra at the quantum dots and cross correlation in the noise between the two quantum dots are in qualitative agreement with experiment. Our simulations find that the cross correlations decrease exponentially with increasing quantum dot separation.

Abstract:Complex dynamical systems which are governed by anomalous diffusion often can be described by Langevin equations driven by Lévy stable noise. In this article we generalize nonlinear stochastic differential equations driven by Gaussian noise and generating signals with 1/f power spectral density by replacing the Gaussian noise with a more general Lévy stable noise. The equations with the Gaussian noise arise as a special case when the index of stability alpha=2. We expect that this generalization may be useful for describing 1/f fluctuations in the systems subjected to Lévy stable noise.
