Abstract:We show that for certain hyperbolic 3-manifolds, all boundary slopes are slopes of immersed incompressible surfaces, covered by incompressible embeddings in some finite cover. The manifolds include hyperbolic punctured torus bundles and hyperbolic two-bridge knots.

Abstract:This paper presents some finiteness results for the number of boundary slopes of immersed essential surfaces of given genus g in a compact 3-manifold with torus boundary. In the case of hyperbolic 3-manifolds we obtain uniform quadratic bounds in g for the number of possible slopes, independent of the 3-manifold. We also look at some related quantities, such as how many times the slopes of two such surfaces of specified genus can intersect.

Abstract:In this note, we extend the Bridgeman-Kahn identity to all finite-volume orientable hyperbolic $n$-manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. In the compact case, Bridgeman and Kahn are able to express the manifold's volume as the sum of a function over only the orthospectrum. For manifolds with non-compact boundary, our extension adds terms corresponding to intrinsic invariants of boundary cusps.

Abstract:In complex dynamics, the boundaries of higher dimensional hyperbolic components in holomorphic families of polynomials or rational maps are mysterious objects, whose topological and analytic properties are fundamental problems. In this paper, we show that in some typical families of polynomials (i.e. algebraic varieties defined by periodic critical relations), the boundary of a capture hyperbolic component ℋ is homeomorphic to the sphere S^2_ℂ(ℋ)-1. Furthermore, we establish an unexpected identity for the Hausdorff dimension of ∂ℋ: H.dim(∂ℋ) = 2 _ℂ(ℋ)-2+max_f∈∂ℋH.dim(∂ A^J(f)), where A^J(f) is the union of the bounded attracting Fatou components of f associated with the free critical points in the Julia set J(f). In the proof, some new results with independent interests are discovered.

Abstract:We report site testing results obtained in night-time during the polar autumn and winter at Dome C. These results were collected during the first Concordia winterover by A. Agabi. They are based upon seeing and isoplanatic angle monitoring, as well as in-situ balloon measurements 2 of the refractive index structure constant profiles Cn (h). Atmosphere is divided into two regions: (i) a 36 m high surface layer responsible of 87% of the turbulence and (ii) a very stable free atmosphere above with a median seeing of 0.36+-0.19 arcsec at an elevation of h = 30 m. The median seeing measured with a DIMM placed on top of a 8.5 m high tower is 1.3+-0.8 arcsec.

Boundary slopes (nearly) bound exceptional slopes

Abstract:For a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$, Dehn surgery along slope $r \in \Q \cup \{\frac10\}$ is {\em exceptional} if it results in a non-hyperbolic manifold. We say meridional surgery, $r = \frac10$, is {\em trivial} as it recovers the manifold $S^3$. We provide evidence in support of two conjectures. The first (inspired by a question of Professor Motegi) states that there are boundary slopes $b_1 < b_2$ such that all non-trivial exceptional surgeries occur, as rational numbers, in the interval $[b_1,b_2]$. We say a boundary slope is {\em NIT} if it is non-integral or toroidal. Second, when there are non-trivial exceptional surgeries, we conjecture there are NIT boundary slopes $b_1 \leq b_2$ so that the exceptional surgeries lie in $[\floor{b_1},\ceil{b_2}]$. Moreover, if $\ceil{b_1} \leq \floor{b_2}$, the integers in the interval $[ \ceil{b_1}, \floor{b_2} ]$ are all exceptional surgeries.

Abstract:A slope $p/q$ is a characterising slope for a knot $K$ in $S^3$ if the oriented homeomorphism type of $p/q$-surgery on $K$ determines $K$ uniquely. We show that when $K$ is a hyperbolic knot its set of characterising slopes contains all but finitely many slopes $p/q$ with $q \geq 3$. We prove stronger results for hyperbolic $L$-space knots, showing that all but finitely many non-integer slopes are characterising. The proof is obtained by combining Lackenby's proof that for a hyperbolic knot any slope $p/q$ with $q$ sufficiently large is characterising with genus bounds derived from Heegaard Floer homology.

Totally Geodesic Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds: Algorithms and Examples

Abstract:Finding a totally geodesic surface, an embedded surface where the geodesics in the surface are also geodesics in the surrounding manifold, has been a problem of interest in the study of 3-manifolds. This has especially been of interest in hyperbolic 3-manifolds and knot complements, complements of piecewise-linearly embedded circles in the 3-sphere. This is due to Menasco-Reid's conjecture stating that hyperbolic knot complements do not contain such surfaces. Here, we present an algorithm that determines whether a given surface is totally geodesic and an algorithm that checks whether a given 3-manifold contains a totally geodesic surface. We applied our algorithm on over 150,000 3-manifolds and discovered nine 3-manifolds with totally geodesic surfaces. Additionally, we verified Menasco-Reid's conjecture for knots up to 12 crossings.

Abstract:We consider the problem of when a closed orientable hyperbolic surface admits a totally geodesic embedding into a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold; given a finite isometric group action on the surface, we consider in particular equivariant versions of such an embedding. We prove that an equivariant embedding exists for all finite irreducible group actions on surfaces; such surfaces are known also as quasiplatonic surfaces; in particular, all quasiplatonic surfaces embed geodesically. In the last section, we discuss some cases of more general finite group actions on surfaces.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a proper essential immersed surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with boundary disjoint from a torus boundary component $T$ of $M$. Let $\alpha$ be the set of coannular slopes of $F$ on $T$. The main theorem of the paper shows that there is a constant $K$ and a finite set of slopes $\Lambda$ on $T$, such that if $\beta$ is a slope on $T$ with $\Delta(\beta, \alpha_i) > K$ for all $\alpha_i$ in $\alpha$, and $\beta$ is not in $\Lambda$, then $F$ remains incompressible after Dehn filling on $T$ along the slope $\beta$. In certain sense, this means that $F$ survives most Dehn fillings. The proof uses minimal surface theory, integral of differential forms, and properties of geometrically finite groups. As a consequence of our method, it will also be shown that Freedman tubings of immersed geometrically finite surfaces are essential if the tubes are long enough.

Abstract:We prove hyperbolic 3-manifolds are geometrically inflexible: a unit quasiconformal deformation of a Kleinian group extends to an equivariant bi-Lipschitz diffeomorphism between quotients whose pointwise bi-Lipschitz constant decays exponentially in the distance form the boundary of the convex core for points in the thick part. Estimates at points in the thin part are controlled by similar estimates on the complex lengths of short curves. We use this inflexibility to give a new proof of the convergence of pseudo-Anosov double-iteration on the quasi-Fuchsian space of a closed surface, and the resulting hyperbolization theorem for closed 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle with pseudo-Anosov monodromy.

Abstract:<p>For a compact, orientable, irreducible, ∂-irreducible, and an-annular 3-manifold, it is shown there are only finitely many boundary slopes for incompressible and ∂-incompressible surfaces of a bounded Euler characteristic. We use normal surface theory and the inverse relationship of crushing a triangulation along a normal surface <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#br0080">[8]</a> and that of inflating an ideal triangulation <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#br0120">[12]</a> to introduce and study boundary-efficient triangulations and end-efficient ideal triangulations. It is shown for a compact 3-manifold with boundary, satisfying these topological conditions, any triangulation can be modified to a boundary-efficient triangulation; furthermore, it can be decided if a triangulation of such a manifold is boundary-efficient.</p>

Abstract:The paper introduces the spirality character of the almost fiber part for a closed essentially immersed subsurface of a closed orientable aspherical 3-manifold, which generalizes an invariant due to Rubinstein and Wang. The subsurface is virtually embedded if and only if the almost fiber part is aspiral, and in this case, the subsurface is virtually a leaf of a taut foliation. Besides other consequences, examples are exhibited that non-geometric 3-manifolds with no Seifert fibered pieces may contain essentially immersed but not virtually embedded closed subsurfaces.

Abstract:A slope $p/q$ is characterising for a knot $K \subset \mathbb{S}^3$ if the orientation-preserving homeomorphism type of the manifold $\mathbb{S}^3_K(p/q)$ obtained by performing Dehn surgery of slope $p/q$ along $K$ uniquely determines the knot $K$. We combine new applications of results from hyperbolic geometry with previous individual work of the authors to determine, for any given knot $K$, an explicit bound $\mathcal{C}(K)$ such that $|q| > \mathcal{C}(K)$ implies that $p/q$ is a characterising slope for $K$.

Abstract:I construct infinite families of knots and links with totally geodesic spanning surfaces, which we call TGS knots and TGS links, in various 3-manifolds. These 3-manifolds include thickened orientable surfaces, the sphere cross the circle, lens spaces, and the solid torus. The totally geodesic spanning surfaces of knots embedded in thickened orientable surfaces are the first examples of totally geodesic spanning surfaces of virtual knots.

Abstract:Among other things, we prove the following two topological statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positive integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, pi(1)-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented connected compact pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In, we exploit techniques developed by Kahn and Markovic but we only distill geometric and topological ingredients from those papers, so no hard analysis is involved in this article.
