Abstract:This paper concentrates on the performance stability of sapphire fiber thermometer probe and the development of an alumina fiber cladding durable under high temperature and of high transparency. Analysis was made on the performance stability of sapphire fiber probe under high temperature when using different kinds of protective tube. It is found that direct contacting of the fiber with protective tube is the most important factor that result in performance deterioration and the dirtying of evaporating substance is another important factor. Then it is applicable to design a suitable protective tube to assure the performance stability. An alumina cladding is being developed by means of sol-gel method. It uses a chelated aluminum but-oxide as the sol. This sol is also combined with a small fraction of MgNO3 . 6H(2)O. It is found that the cladding layer by this means has higher transparency than the common used sol-gel method. Sintering under special air condition is also very important to assure the transparency. The cladding will still keep transparent even if worked under 1600 degrees C. By now, thickness up to I um has been made with good transparency and a refractive index of about 1.35.

Abstract:Surface fogging reduces light transmission of optically clear materials and causes various problems in daily life. Transparent photothermal materials have recently emerged as an eco-friendly and sustainable solution to surface fogging. However, most reported photothermal materials only exploited the broadband spectrum of solar energy, and the spectral feature has yet to be tuned to optimize the visibility and photothermal effect simultaneously. Here, we develop a highly transparent, photothermally selective coating, based on solution-processed cesium-doped tungsten trioxide nanoparticles. The transparent selective photothermal coating provides a visible transmittance up to 82% and a high absorption of ultraviolet and near-infrared light >90%, and achieves a temperature increase by 38 degrees C under 1-sun illumination, resulting in remarkable antifogging and defogging abilities under extremely frigid or humid conditions. Large-scale complex surfaces with photothermal coatings are deployed in field antifogging tests as well as long-term durability tests, showing their great potential in antifogging applications.

Abstract:Flexible and lightweight thermal insulation materials with hierarchical microstructures are ubiquitous in thermal management and protection systems. Ceramic aerogels promise high-temperature thermal insulation but lack mechanical robustness, while the fibrous materials with excellent mechanical elasticity display modest thermal insulation. Here we describe flexible hierarchical superhydrophobic ceramic insulation nanocomposites through the densified architectured hierarchical nanostructures, radiative insulation coating, and interfacial cross-linking among composites. The lightweight flexible ceramic nanocomposites exhibit a density of 0.13 g/cm3, high-temperature fire resistance with thermal conductivity of 0.024 W/(m·K), and super-hydrophobicity with the water contact angle of 152°. The mechanical robustness and high-temperature thermal insulation of ceramic nanocomposites, together with its soundproof performance, shed light on the low-cost flexible insulation materials manufacturing with scalability for high-temperature thermal insulation applications under high mechanical loading conditions.

Abstract:High temperature resistant composite materials and thermal insulation functional materials are widely used in high-speed aircraft load shields due to their excellent comprehensive performance. This paper analyzes and compares the advantages, disadvantages and application scope of ceramic based, resin based high temperature resistant materials and thermal insulation functional materials from the perspective of high temperature resistant materials and thermal insulation functional material systems for radomes. This paper focuses on the integrated design and preparation technology of a high temperature and heat insulation wave transmitting radome, and tests the heat insulation performance and wave transmission performance of the radome products. The test results are consistent with the theoretical simulation results and it meets the performance requirements of the radome.

Abstract:As hypersonic aircraft reach higher speeds, the aerodynamic heating they generate becomes increasingly severe, presenting a challenge for thermal protection materials. While ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) can meet the requirements of high-temperature resistance as thermal protection materials, their high thermal conductivity poses a challenge to resist the propagation of heat generated by aerodynamic heating from the surface of the fuselage to the interior. Therefore, in order to ensure the operating temperature of electronic components inside the fuselage, research on thermal insulation UHTCs is necessary. This paper proposes two methods to reduce the thermal conductivity of UHTCs based on their heat transfer mechanism. The first method is to form high-entropy solid solution ceramics, while the second method is to prepare porous ceramics. These methods have the potential to reduce the thermal conductivity of UHTCs and meet the application requirements of ultra-high temperature thermal insulation.

Abstract:With the continuous exploration of uncharted and extreme environments,enhanced temperature robustness of passive devices has become particularly important.In this study,a ceramic-based meta-material absorber with exceptional temperature stability is developed using a fusion design approach that combines rare metal-based tungsten bronze structural ceramics and meta-materials.Specifically,the absorbance of the meta-material array based on Mie resonance exceeds 49.0%in both waveguides and free space,approaching the theoretical limit.According to impedance analysis,the absorption performance can be distinctly correlated with the dielectric loss （Q_f）.Notably,the high-temperature robustness is verified to still be effective at 400℃.These advancements in our design allow for the use of monolithic materials in fabricating temperature-stable perfect absorbers,providing greater freedom in the dielectric performance and expanding their potential applications,including in space exploration and 5G millimeter-wave scenarios.

Abstract:The structure and properties of low-temperature co-fired ceramics systems such as BiNbO4,MO-TiO2 (M= Mg,Zn,Ba),AB2O6 (A=Ba,Mg,Zn,B=Nb,Ta),MO-SiO2 (M=Ca,Mg,Zn),CaO-Li2O-Nb2O5-TiO2,and BaO-Ln2O3-TiO2 (Ln=Sm,Nd) are reviewed. The method,mechanism and existent problems of decreasing the sintering temperature of microwave dielectric ceramics are discussed. The properties of low-temperature co-fired ceramics are analyzed. The recent progress on chip multilayer microwave components such as filters,antenna and resonators is introduced. The future prospects of low-temperature co-fired ceramic microwave dielectric ceramics and their components are provided.

Abstract:Abstract Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are generally referred to the carbides, nitrides, and borides of the transition metals, with the Group IVB compounds (Zr & Hf) and TaC as the main focus. The UHTCs are endowed with ultra-high melting points, excellent mechanical properties, and ablation resistance at elevated temperatures. These unique combinations of properties make them promising materials for extremely environmental structural applications in rocket and hypersonic vehicles, particularly nozzles, leading edges, and engine components, etc. In addition to bulk UHTCs, UHTC coatings and fiber reinforced UHTC composites are extensively developed and applied to avoid the intrinsic brittleness and poor thermal shock resistance of bulk ceramics. Recently, highentropy UHTCs are developed rapidly and attract a lot of attention as an emerging direction for ultra-high temperature materials. This review presents the state of the art of processing approaches, microstructure design and properties of UHTCs from bulk materials to composites and coatings, as well as the future directions.

Abstract:With the development of aerospace industry, higher requirements have been presented on heat protective materials and structures for aerospace vehicles. Some novel heat protective materials with higher service temperature, lower density, and higher heat-insulating performance and mechanical properties must be developed to meet the requirements, among which high temperature porous ceramics are one kind of candidates. This paper gives a brief review of the recent research progress on lightweight, high strength and heat-insulating porous ceramics by the author's group, including some new preparation techniques and adjusting methods of porous structure, thermal and mechanical properties. Finally, a simple prediction is given on future development trend in heat-protective materials.

Abstract:The increase of the efficiency for gas turbines leads to the increasing combustion-chambertemperatures. Abstract:Nanostructures tend to be unstable at high temperatures due to large capillary energies, and therefore nanotechnology has not yet found many high-temperature applications at 1000 °C and above. By taking advantage of the high-temperature stability of refractory ceramics, here we develop a new approach of making hollow nano-grained materials to achieve thermal superinsulation across a wide temperature range, where the gaseous voids are mostly isolated within individual grain, with size comparable to the mean free path of air molecules to lower the thermal conduction by Knudsen effect. We have proved this general concept with hollow-grained La2Zr2O7 ceramic, and demonstrated exceptionally low thermal conductivity (0.016 W/(m⋅K)), the lowest ever reported for hard materials at or above room temperature. The centimeter-scale samples also have ultrahigh compressive strength (251 MPa), tensile strength in bending up to 100 MPa, and excellent thermal stability up to 1400 °C in air, due to monodispersity of pores that delays coarsening.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of research of cordierite ceramics; within its composition, a part of components is introduced using relatively low-melting MABS glass. After firing at a temperature of 1375 °C, densely sintered materials with low values of LCTE (17.7–18.5) × 10–7 deg–1 were obtained, which predetermine their high thermal stability (not lower than 900 °C). The only crystalline phase of experimental ceramics is α-cordierite, which forms its structural matrix. Crystals of α-cordierite of 1–2 μm in size are tightly interconnected via thin layers of the residual glass phase. Cordierite ceramics is characterized by zero values of water absorption and open porosity, as well as high values of mechanical compressive strength. In addition, the dense microstructure allows achieving consistently high dielectric values (ε = 4.9; tan δ = 0.0014) in an ultra-high-frequency electromagnetic field (1010 Hz). The synthesized ceramics can be successively used as radio-transparent materials, including structural ones.

Abstract:Oxide glass is an industrial material with advantages such as optical transparency and shaping ability of the melt, but at the same time, it is a bad conductor of heat due to its disordered structures. Therefore, heat dissipation in glass components often becomes a problem and its applications to the thermal management has been limited to use as a heat insulator. To break this mold and to apply it to fields, e.g., transparent sealing materials, for which low thermal conductive glasses and organic polymers have been conventionally used, we fabricated an MgO-dispersed glass-ceramics in our previous work. It comprises MgO crystal and glass matrix and their reflective indices are matched, leading to optical transparency and improvement in thermal conductivity. Here we investigate the atomic-scale structures in the MgO-dispersed glass-ceramics by nuclear magnetic resonance, etc. and attempt to further improve the thermal conductivity and the transparency. As a result, we show an MgO-dispersed glass-ceramic with a thermal conductivity of 3.3 W (m-1 K-1), corresponding to 300% of that of the glass matrix, high optical transparency, and glass transition. This report highlights that our strategies pave the way for development of novel transparent, functional glass-ceramics.
Investigation on Microstructure, Wave Absorbing Properties and High Temperature Stability for (Mg0.2Ni0.2Co0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2)O High-entropy Ceramics

Abstract:In this work, high entropy (Mg 0.2 Ni 0.2 Co 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )O ceramics were fabricated with three different precursors by conventional sintering method. SEM and XRD analyses revealed the microstructure is related to the precursors while the phase composition is independent with the precursors. Compared with S1 and S2 samples, the S3 samples show well distributed small pores located inside the grain or at the grain boundary. While all the samples exhibit a single rock salt phase. The RL values could reach to -30.5 dB (S3) at 6.8 GHz under the thickness of 4.0 mm, the excellent microwave absorbing properties stem from the bonding interface defects, the micro-pores and many grain boundaries. The (Mg 0.2 Ni 0.2 Co 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )O ceramics keep stable under 1200 o C for S3. The results demonstrate that (Mg 0.2 Ni 0.2 Co 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )O ceramics may be a promising candidate for microwave absorption materials at high temperature.
