Abstract:We prove that arbitrary simplicial manifolds satisfy Kan conditions in a suitable local sense. This allows us to expand a technique for differentiating higher Lie groupoids worked out in current research to the setting of general simplicial manifolds. Consequently, we derive a method to differentiate simplicial manifolds into higher Lie algebroids.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of an effective Kan fibration, a new mathematical structure that can be used to study simplicial homotopy theory. Our main motivation is to make simplicial homotopy theory suitable for homotopy type theory. Effective Kan fibrations are maps of simplicial sets equipped with a structured collection of chosen lifts that satisfy certain non-trivial properties. This contrasts with the ordinary, unstructured notion of a Kan fibration. We show that fundamental properties of Kan fibrations can be extended to explicit constructions on effective Kan fibrations. In particular, we give a constructive (explicit) proof showing that effective Kan fibrations are stable under push forward, or fibred exponentials. This is known to be impossible for ordinary Kan fibrations. We further show that effective Kan fibrations are local, or completely determined by their fibres above representables. We also give an (ineffective) proof saying that the maps which can be equipped with the structure of an effective Kan fibration are precisely the ordinary Kan fibrations. Hence implicitly, both notions still describe the same homotopy theory. By showing that the effective Kan fibrations combine all these properties, we solve an open problem in homotopy type theory. In this way our work provides a first step in giving a constructive account of Voevodsky's model of univalent type theory in simplicial sets.

Abstract:We distinguish between faint, weak, strong and strict localizations of categories at morphism families and show that this framework captures the different types of derived functors that are considered in the literature. More precisely, we show that Kan and faint derived functors coincide when we use the classical Kan homotopy category, and when we use the Quillen homotopy category, Kan and strong derived functors coincide. Our comparison results are based on the fact that the Kan homotopy category is a weak localization and that the Quillen homotopy category is a strict localization.

Abstract:We give a fully constructive proof that there is a proper cartesian $\omega$-combinatorial model structure on the category of simplicial sets, whose generating cofibrations and trivial cofibrations are the usual boundary inclusion and horn inclusion. The main difference with classical mathematics is that constructively not all monomorphisms are cofibrations (only those satisfying some decidability conditions) and not every object is cofibrant. The proof relies on three main ingredients: First, our construction of a weak model categories on simplicial sets, then the interplay with the semi-simplicial versions of this weak model structure and finally, the use of Kan Ex$^{\infty}$-functor, and more precisely of S.Moss' direct proof that the natural map $X \rightarrow $ Ex$^{\infty} X$ is an anodyne morphism, which we show is constructive when $X$ is cofibrant.

Abstract:We study simplicial action of groups on one vertex Kan complexes. We show that every semi-direct product of the fundamental group of an one vertex Kan complex with a finite group can be simplicially realized. We also calculate the cohomology of the fixed point set of a finite $p-$group action on an one vertex aspherical Kan complex.

Abstract:Abstract One way of interpreting a left Kan extension is as taking a kind of “partial colimit”, whereby one replaces parts of a diagram by their colimits. We make this intuition precise by means of the partial evaluations sitting in the so-called bar construction of monads. The (pseudo)monads of interest for forming colimits are the monad of diagrams and the monad of small presheaves, both on the (huge) category CAT of locally small categories. Throughout, particular care is taken to handle size issues, which are notoriously delicate in the context of free cocompletion. We spell out, with all 2-dimensional details, the structure maps of these pseudomonads. Then, based on a detailed general proof of how the restriction-of-scalars construction of monads extends to the case of pseudoalgebras over pseudomonads, we consider a morphism of monads between them, which we call image . This morphism allows in particular to generalize the idea of confinal functors , i.e. of functors which leave colimits invariant in an absolute way. This generalization includes the concept of absolute colimit as a special case. The main result of this paper spells out how a pointwise left Kan extension of a diagram corresponds precisely to a partial evaluation of its colimit. This categorical result is analogous to what happens in the case of probability monads, where a conditional expectation of a random variable corresponds to a partial evaluation of its center of mass.

Abstract:We will show make two contributions to the theory of effective Kan fibrations, which are a more explicit version of the notion of a Kan fibration, a notion which plays a fundamental role in simplicial homotopy theory. We will show that simplicial Malcev algebras are effective Kan complexes and that the effective Kan fibrations can be seen as the right class in an algebraic weak factorisation system. In addition, we will introduce two strengthenings of the notion of an effective Kan fibration, the symmetric effective and degenerate-preferring Kan fibrations, and show that the previous results holds for these strengthenings as well.

Pointwise Kan extensions along 2-fibrations and the 2-category of elements

Abstract:We study the 2-category of elements from an abstract point of view. We generalize to dimension 2 the well-known result that the category of elements can be captured by a comma object that also exhibits a pointwise left Kan extension. For this, we propose an original definition of pointwise Kan extension along a discrete 2-opfibration in the lax 3-category of 2-categories, 2-functors, lax natural transformations and modifications. Such definition uses cartesian-marked lax limits, which are an alternative to weighted 2-limits. We show that a pointwise Kan extension along a discrete 2-opfibration is always a weak one as well. The proof is based on an original generalization of the parametrized Yoneda lemma which is as lax as it can be.

Abstract:Axiomatic Cohesion proposes that the contrast between cohesion and non-cohesion may be expressed by means of a geometric morphism $p :\mathcal{E} \to \mathcal {S}$ (between toposes) with certain special properties that allow to effectively use the intuition that the objects of $\mathcal{E}$ are `spaces' and those of $\mathcal{S}$ are `sets'. Such geometric morphisms are called (pre-)cohesive. We may also say that $\mathcal{E}$ is pre-cohesive (over $\mathcal{S}$). In this case, the topos $\mathcal{E}$ determines an $\mathcal{S}$-enriched `homotopy' category. The purpose of the present paper is to study certain aspects of this homotopy theory. We introduce weakly Kan objects in a pre-cohesive topos, which are analogous to Kan complexes in the topos of simplicial sets. Also, given a geometric morphism $g:\mathcal{F} \to\mathcal{E}$ between pre-cohesive toposes $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{E}$ (over the same base), we define what it means for $g$ to preserve pieces. We prove that if $g$ preserves pieces then it induces an adjunction between the homotopy categories determined by $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{E}$, and that the direct image $g_*:\mathcal{F}\to \mathcal{E}$ preserves weakly Kan objects. These and other results support the intuition that the inverse image of $g$ is `geometric realization'. In particular, since Kan complexes are weakly Kan in the pre-cohesive topos of simplicial sets, the result relating $g$ and weakly Kan objects is analogous to the fact that the singular complex of a space is a Kan complex.

Abstract:In this mainly expository note, we state a criterion for when a left Kan extension of a lax monoidal functor along a strong monoidal functor can itself be equipped with a lax monoidal structure, in a way that results in a left Kan extension in MonCat. This belongs to the general theory of algebraic Kan extensions, as developed by Melli\`es-Tabareau, Koudenburg and Weber, and is very close to an instance of a theorem of Koudenburg. We find this special case particularly important due to its connections with the theory of graded monads.
Higher vector bundles over Lie groupoids

Abstract:We introduce higher analogs for cleavages and flatness within the context of (Kan) simplicial fibrations, and apply them to provide geometric models for Lie groupoid representations up to homotopy. Concretely, we establish a functorial equivalence between representations up to homotopy of a Lie groupoid and simplicial vector bundles over its nerve endowed with a cleavage. Our result extends earlier work of Gracia-Saz and Mehta, it can be seen as a relative version of the Dold-Kan correspondence, and also as a higher smooth generalization of the Grothendieck correspondence between pseudo-functors and fibered categories.

Abstract:For a connected reductive group G and an affine smooth G-variety X over the complex numbers, the localization functor takes g-modules to D-X-modules. We extend this construction to an equivariant and derived setting using the formalism of h-complexes due to Beilinson-Ginzburg, and show that the localizations of Harish-Chandra (g, K)-modules onto X = H\G have regular holonomic cohomologies when H, K subset of G are both spherical reductive subgroups. The relative Lie algebra homologies and Ext-branching spaces for (g, K)-modules are interpreted geometrically in terms of equivariant derived localizations. As direct consequences, we show that they are finite-dimensional under the same assumptions, and relate Euler-Poincare characteristics to local index theorem; this recovers parts of the recent results of M. Kitagawa. Examples and discussions on the relation to Schwartz homologies are also included.
Sheaves of Higher Categories on Generalised Spaces

Abstract:We study the homotopy right Kan extension of homotopy sheaves on a category to its free cocompletion, i.e. to its category of presheaves. Any pretopology on the original category induces a canonical pretopology of generalised coverings on the free cocompletion. We show that with respect to these pretopologies the homotopy right Kan extension along the Yoneda embedding preserves homotopy sheaves valued in (sufficiently nice) simplicial model categories. Moreover, we show that this induces an equivalence between sheaves of spaces on the original category and colimit-preserving sheaves of spaces on its free cocompletion. We present three applications in geometry and topology: first, we prove that diffeological vector bundles descend along subductions of diffeological spaces. Second, we deduce that various flavours of bundle gerbes with connection satisfy $(\infty,2)$-categorical descent. Finally, we investigate smooth diffeomorphism actions in smooth bordism-type field theories on a manifold. We show how these smooth actions allow us to extract the values of a field theory on any object coherently from its values on generating objects of the bordism category.

Abstract:An algebraic left Kan extension is a left Kan extension which interacts well with the algebraic structure present in the given situation, and these appear in various subjects such as the homotopy theory of operads and in the study of conformal field theories. In the most interesting examples, the functor along which we left Kan extend goes between categories that enjoy universal properties which express the meaning of the calculation we are trying to understand. These universal properties say that the categories in question are universal examples of some categorical structure possessing some kind of internal structure, and so fall within the theory of internal algebra classifiers described in earlier work of the author. In this article conditions of a monad-theoretic nature are identified which give rise to morphisms between such universal objects, which satisfy the key condition of Guitart-exactness, which guarantees the algebraicness of left Kan extending along them. The resulting setting explains the algebraicness of the left Kan extensions arising in operad theory, for instance from the theory of Feynman categories of Kaufmann and Ward, generalisations thereof, and also includes the situations considered by Batanin and Berger in their work on the homotopy theory of algebras of polynomial monads.

Abstract:We extend the nonabelian Dold-Kan decomposition for simplicial groups of Carrasco and Cegarra in two ways. First, we show that the total order of the subgroups in their decomposition belongs to a family of total orders all giving rise to Dold-Kan decompositions. We exhibit a particular partial order such that the family is characterized as consisting of all total orders extending the partial order. Second, we consider symmetric-simplicial groups and show that, by using a specially chosen presentation of the category of symmetric-simplicial operators, new Dold-Kan decompositions exist which are algebraically much simpler than those of Carrasco and Cegarra in the sense that the commutator of two component subgroups lies in a single component subgroup.
