Abstract:Recent development of pulsed fiber lasers was greatly promoted by their significant applications in various fields. Nanostructured materials show unique physicochemical properties that are different from their bulk counterparts and have attracted much interest due to their promising applications in many areas such as the generation of pulsed fiber lasers. Herein, preparation and pulsed fiber laser applications of emerging nanostructured materials are reviewed. First, preparation methods of the emerging nanostructured materials are summarized. In the following, common characterization techniques of the emerging nanostructured materials are introduced. Then, the state of the art applications of the nanostructured materials as saturable absorbers in pulsed fiber lasers are provided. Finally, a summary and outlook regarding preparation and pulsed fiber laser applications of emerging nanostructured materials are considered.

Abstract:Mode-locking and ultrashort pulse synchronous pumping arc the main ways to obtain ultrashort pulses from Raman fiber lasers. In the mode-locked Raman fiber lasers, high performance output can be achieved in the structure with equivalent saturable absorbers, but the limitation caused by the long gain fiber remains. The method of synchronous pumping can overcome this problem effectively and achieve excellent ultrafast Raman laser output. There is a great potential for the ultrafast Raman fiber laser technology, and future research will focus on further improving the overall performance of various ultrafast Raman fiber lasers and investigating new phenomena observed in these laser systems.

Abstract:Ultrafast lasers, characterized by femtosecond and picosecond pulse durations, have revolutionized material processing due to their high energy density and minimal thermal diffusion, and have played a transformative role in precision manufacturing. This review first traces the progression from early ruby lasers to modern titanium–sapphire lasers, highlighting breakthroughs like Kerr-lens mode-locking and chirped pulse amplification. It also examines the interaction mechanisms between ultrafast pulses and various materials, including metals, dielectrics, and semiconductors. Applications of ultrafast lasers in microstructure processing techniques are detailed, such as drilling, cutting, surface ablation, and nano welding, demonstrating the versatility and precision of the technology. Additionally, it covers femtosecond laser direct writing for optical waveguides and the significant advancements in imaging and precision measurement. This review concludes by discussing potential future advancements and industrial applications of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:With the advancement of micro/nanotechnology, precise control of the interaction between light and matter at the micro/nanoscale is crucial for successful material processing and surface functionalization. Ultrafast lasers with ultra-short pulses have gained attention due to their high spatial resolution and low thermal damage, enabling extremely smooth and precise machining on various metal surfaces. At the same time, shorter pulse nanosecond lasers, which have a wider application range, strike a balance between achieving high-precision microfabrication and mitigating adverse thermal effects caused by millisecond lasers. By adjusting laser processing parameters, it is possible to create large-scale micro/nanostructures with complex shapes, delicate textures, and special functionalities, applicable in fields such as optics, electronics, and biomedicine. Short/ultrafast pulse laser fabrication technology opens up more possibilities and prospects for the realization of diverse functional micro/nanostructures. This comprehensive review provides an overview of the interaction mechanisms between short/ultra-short-pulse laser micro/nanoprocessing and materials. By integrating theoretical models such as the two-temperature model and the Drude–Lorentz model, along with comprehensive numerical simulation methods, a brief summary of the ablation behavior of metal surfaces under short/ultra-short-pulse lasers is provided. Furthermore, we delve into the controllability of microstructures, laser-induced periodic surface structures at the nanoscale, and other types of nanostructures under different processing conditions. Thorough analysis and discussion are conducted from multiple perspectives, including surface topography and functional impacts. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the functionalization of metal surfaces with micro/nanostructures, and an in-depth investigation and review are conducted in areas such as surface wettability, bio-inspired surfaces, optical diffraction, and advanced biomedicine. Finally, the advantages and limitations of laser texturing processing techniques are discussed, and the future development of functionalized metal surfaces is anticipated.

Abstract:The mechanisms of ultrashort-pulse laser ablation of materials are discussed, and the differences to that of long laser pulses are emphasized. Ultrashort laser pulses offer both high laser intensity and precise laser-induced breakdown threshold with reduced laser fluence. The ablation of materials with ultrashort pulses has a very limited heat-affected volume. The advantages of ultrashort laser pulses are applied in precision micromachining of various materials. Some femtosecond laser pulse micromachining results, including comparison with long pulses, are presented. Ultrashort-pulse laser micromachining may have a wide range of applications where micrometer and submicrometer feature sizes are required.

Abstract:With wide applicability and low-cost processing advantages, laser processing, as a mature and versatile tool, is forming an alternative to conventional processing technologies. In recent years, the global laser market ushered in a broad new demand since the gradual increase in the penetration rate of laser processing in consumer electronics, automotive processing, aerospace, medical and other fields. Ultrafast laser and continuous wave (CW) laser are the representatives of high-quality and high-efficiency in laser processing, respectively, but it is a huge challenge to achieve high-quality and high-efficiency laser processing at the same time in the true sense, which has been the goal of the joint efforts of scientific researchers in recent decades. In this context, combined pulse laser (CPL), one of the hybrid laser processing technologies, has proven to be a reliable tool for the high-quality and high-efficiency processing through the processing advantages of different types of lasers and controlling the laser-matter interaction. In this review, the basic principles and characteristics of the CPL processing method are systematically introduced. Also, how the CPL method is for precisely and efficiently ablating, drilling, welding and structuring and their recent advancements are analyzed. Finally, a summary and outlook of the CPL technology is highlighted.

Abstract:Ultra-short pulse lasers, generating coherent light pulses with pulse durations in the picosecond and femtosecond range, are becoming popular in precision laser microfabrication. They are benefiting not only from well-predicted laser ablation with the suppressed heat-affected zone but also by opening new processing opportunities, especially in transparent materials, due to enhanced non-linear interaction with the material. In this review, the evolution of various kinds of mode-locked lasers from a scientific toy to a robust industrial tool is reviewed. The utilization benefits of high-average-power, high-pulse-repetition-rate ultra-short pulse laser are closely related to beam shaping and manipulation techniques. Fast beam scanning with galvanometric and polygon scanners as well as multi-beam parallel processing methods were developed. Some hot applications areas are briefly described. The efficient use of photons from ultra-short pulse lasers pushed the development of optimization methods in the ablation process. Efforts toward upscaling the process by increasing the average power of mode-locked lasers made feedback to laser developers, and burst regime became a necessity as well as high-speed beam scanning devices. Unique opportunities of ultra-short pulses are successfully exploited in machining transparent materials, with glass separation being the leading application.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser technology is one of the most active research frontiers in lasers, physics and information science. It is widely applied in industrial processing, biomedicine, lidar and other fields. Because of their unique physical structure and excellent photoelectric properties, two-dimensional materials have a wide operating band, controllable modulation depth and short recovery time when they are employed as saturable absorbers in ultrafast lasers. Among them, transition metal dichalcogenides have become a focus of research because their band-gap is continuously adjustable. In this paper, we introduce the characteristics of transition metal dichalcogenides and the fabrication methods of saturable absorber devices. The research progress of ultrafast lasers based on emerging transition metal dichalcogenides is reviewed, and the development trend is highlighted.

Our recent studies of the physicochemical processes and mechanisms for pulsed laser ablation of metal oxides were briefly reviewed. A novel thermal-controlling mechanism was proposed for the pulsed laser ablation of metal oxides when the laser fluence was not very high.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) micro/nano structures are significant in many applications because of their novel multi-functions and potential in high integration. As is known, the traditional methods for the processing of 3D micro/nano structures exhibit disadvantages in mass production and machining precision. Alternatively, ultrafast laser machining, as a rapid and high-power-density processing method, exhibits advantages in 3D micro/nano structuring due to its characteristics of extremely high peak power and ultra-short pulse. With the development of ultrafast laser processing for fine and complex structures, it is attracting significant interest and showing great potential in the manufacture of 3D micro/nano structures. In this review, we introduce the optimization mechanism of ultrafast laser machining in detail, such as the optimization of the repetition rate and pulse energy of the laser. Furthermore, the specific applications of 3D micro/nano structures by laser processing in the optical, electrochemical and biomedical fields are elaborated, and a valuable summary and perspective of 3D micro/nano manufacturing in these fields are provided.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser technology has moved from ultrafast to ultra-strong due to the development of chirped pulse amplification technology. Ultrafast laser technology, such as femtosecond lasers and picosecond lasers, has quickly become a flexible tool for processing brittle and hard materials and complex micro-components, which are widely used in and developed for medical, aerospace, semiconductor applications and so on. However, the mechanisms of the interaction between an ultrafast laser and brittle and hard materials are still unclear. Meanwhile, the ultrafast laser processing of these materials is still a challenge. Additionally, highly efficient and high-precision manufacturing using ultrafast lasers needs to be developed. This review is focused on the common challenges and current status of the ultrafast laser processing of brittle and hard materials, such as nickel-based superalloys, thermal barrier ceramics, diamond, silicon dioxide, and silicon carbide composites. Firstly, different materials are distinguished according to their bandgap width, thermal conductivity and other characteristics in order to reveal the absorption mechanism of the laser energy during the ultrafast laser processing of brittle and hard materials. Secondly, the mechanism of laser energy transfer and transformation is investigated by analyzing the interaction between the photons and the electrons and ions in laser-induced plasma, as well as the interaction with the continuum of the materials. Thirdly, the relationship between key parameters and ultrafast laser processing quality is discussed. Finally, the methods for achieving highly efficient and high-precision manufacturing of complex three-dimensional micro-components are explored in detail.

Abstract:The global energy crisis is increasing the demand for innovative materials with high purity and functionality for the development of clean energy production and storage. The development of novel photo- and electrocatalysts significantly depends on synthetic techniques that facilitate the production of tailored advanced nanomaterials. The emerging use of pulsed laser in liquid synthesis has attracted immense interest as an effective synthetic technology with several advantages over conventional chemical and physical synthetic routes, including the fine-tuning of size, composition, surface, and crystalline structures, and defect densities and is associated with the catalytic, electronic, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties of the produced nanomaterials. Herein, we present an overview of the fundamental understanding and importance of the pulsed laser process, namely various roles and mechanisms involved in the production of various types of nanomaterials, such as metal nanoparticles, oxides, non-oxides, and carbon-based materials. We mainly cover the advancement of photo- and electrocatalytic nanomaterials via pulsed laser-assisted technologies with detailed mechanistic insights and structural optimization along with effective catalytic performances in various energy and environmental remediation processes. Finally, the future directions and challenges of pulsed laser techniques are briefly underlined. This review can exert practical guidance for the future design and fabrication of innovative pulsed laser-induced nanomaterials with fascinating properties for advanced catalysis applications.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing of metals by employing continuous wave and short pulse lasers completely changes the way of modern industrial production. But the ultrafast laser has the superiority to short pulse laser and continuous wave laser in additive manufacturing. It has higher peak power, small thermal effect, high machining accuracy and low damage threshold. It can effectively perform additive manufacturing for special materials and improve the mechanical properties of parts. This article reviews the mechanism of the interaction between ultrafast laser and metal materials to rule the manufacturing processes. The current application of ultrafast laser on forming and manufacturing special materials, including refractory metals, transparent materials, composite materials and high thermal conductivity materials are also discussed. Among the review, the shortcomings and challenges of the current experimental methods are discussed as well. Finally, suggestions are provided for the industrial application of ultrashort pulse laser in the field of additive manufacturing in the future.

Abstract:Pulsed fiber lasers, with high peak power and narrow pulse widths, have been proven to be an important tool for a variety of fields of application. In this work, frontier and hot topics in pulsed fiber lasers were analyzed with 11,064 articles. Benefitting from the scientometric analysis capabilities of CiteSpace, the analysis found that passively mode-locked fiber lasers with saturable absorbers (SAs) based on two-dimensional (2D) materials have become a hot research topic in the field of pulsed fiber lasers due to the advantages of self-starting operation, high stability, and good compatibility. The excellent nonlinear optical properties exhibited by 2D materials at nanometer-scale thicknesses have become a particularly popular research topic; the research has paved the way for exploring its wider applications. We summarize the performance of several typical 2D materials in ultrafast fiber lasers, such as graphene, topological insulators (TIs), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and black phosphorus (BP). Meanwhile, we review and analyze the direction of the development of 2D SAs for ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:Thermal effect remains a thorny issue for femtosecond-laser surface engineering and nanostructuring on metallic targets with high pulse energies or high repetition rates, which needs to be paid adequate attentions. Herein, we have experimentally investigated the heat diffusion and accumulations during single-shot and multi-shot femtosecond laser ablation on metallic surfaces. We have for the first time observed a novel phenomenon that the thermal effect was intensified abruptly when the laser-pulse number goes over a threshold (approximately between 10 and 20 for aluminum alloy with laser fluence of 6 J cm-2), accompanied with a dramatic reduction of ablated depth and complicated plasma dynamics. Based on both optical and thermodynamic analysis, we introduced a defocusing-dominated plasma-assistant model for this abnormal thermal effect. This work explored the critical experimental parameters for femtosecond-laser surface modification and processing in micro-scale engineering applications.

Abstract:In recent years, with the gradual deepening of researches on the field of micro-nano integration such as microfluidies, micromachines, and microelectronics, joining among different kinds of materials has become a bottleneck in the related fields. Due to the characteristics of controllable thermal effect and high precision, ultrashort pulsed laser welding has become a hotspot in the welding of non-metallic materials. In this review article, applications and concrete cases of the welding of non-metallic materials such as glasses, ceramics, semiconductor monocrystalline materials, and organic polymers arc introduced. In addition, the future trends of ultrashort pulsed laser welding arc also prospected.
