Abstract:Pulsed-laser dry printing of noble-metal microrings with a tunable internal porous structure, which can be revealed via an ion-beam etching post-procedure, was demonstrated. Abundance and average size of the pores inside the microrings were shown to be tuned in a wide range by varying incident pulse energy and a nitrogen doping level controlled in the process of magnetron deposition of the gold film in the appropriate gaseous environment. The fabricated porous microrings were shown to provide many-fold near-field enhancement of incident electromagnetic fields, which was confirmed by mapping of the characteristic Raman band of a nanometer-thick covering layer of Rhodamine 6G dye molecules and supporting finite-difference time-domain calculations. The proposed laser printing/ion-beam etching approach is demonstrated to be a unique tool aimed at designing and fabricating multifunctional plasmonic structures and metasurfaces for spectroscopic bioidentification based on surface-enhanced infrared absorption, Raman scattering and photoluminescence detection schemes.

Abstract:A simple and convenient nanofabrication method is proposed to achieve nanopillar arrays by the pattern transfer of an anodic aluminum oxide membrane, profiting from the rapid and efficient preparation process and regular hexagonal lattice patterns of the anodic aluminum oxide template. The taper angle of the nanopillar is affected by the distribution of the vapor particles during the deposition process, which is highly dependent on the material and deposition power. Based on this method, a novel scheme employing aluminum nanopillar arrays is demonstrated to realize the color tuning feature by simply varying the thickness of the top dielectric layer within a large range. The nanopillar arrays are completely covered by the thick dielectric layer atop due to the great conformality of the atomic layer deposition method that is used for the dielectric deposition. In addition, the color devices present good angular insensitivity up to 45°, resulting from the excited localized surface plasmon resonance within the metallic patches. The simple fabrication method is of great advantage to produce periodic nanostructures over large areas, which are widely used in designs and verifications of optical metasurfaces for various applications, including optical communication, imaging, sensing, and so forth.

Abstract:A novel and convenient color-tuning method by filling the porous alumina membrane (PAM) based on metal-dielectric-metal structure is proposed. The pore sizes of PAM as well as the thickness of TiO2 films, deposited by atomic layer deposition, causes various reflection colors due to multilayer interference effects. Overlapping films on top and within the PAM structure can be observed with a scanning electron microscope and will be used to show the change of the effective refractive index of the PAM composite layer. The color-tuning method resulting in changing the dynamics of the PAM layer can be widely applied in fields such as micro-optics, microstructures, nanomaterials, and micro/nanotechnology. Abstract:We report on three different methods to prepare nanostructured materials using highly ordered porous alumina membranes as templates: (1) firstly, a new and simple method, termed as the paired cell method, was developed for the preparation of inorganic nanowires. Several kinds of inorganic nanowires were synthesized using this method. The structure and composition of these nanowires were determined by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. (2) Secondly, highly ordered platinum nanowire arrays were prepared by electrochemical method with the help of porous alumina membrane templates. The structure and composition of these nanowire arrays were also characterized by various experimental techniques. The electrochemically active surface area of the nanowire arrays was determined by cyclic voltammetry based on hydrogen adsorption. Results showed that the platinum nanowire arrays exhibited a large surface area. (3) Finally, we also present a simple and reliable procedure for the preparation of highly ordered metal nanohole and nanopillar arrays, based on the anodic oxidation of aluminum and vacuum evaporation technology. The field emission scanning electron microscopic images revealed that these metal nanostructure arrays were highly ordered over a large area. The nanoimprinting of aluminum surfaces using the as-prepared chromium nanopillar arrays was demonstrated, resulting in periodic indentation on the aluminum surface.

Abstract:Ultra-thin anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes are efficient templates for the fabrication of patterned nanostructures. Herein, a three-step etching method to control the morphology of AAO is described. The morphological evolution of the AAO during phosphoric acid etching is systematically investigated and a nonlinear growth mechanism during unsteady-state anodization is revealed. The thickness of the AAO can be quantitatively controlled from ∼100 nm to several micrometers while maintaining the tunablity of the pore diameter. The AAO membranes are robust and readily transferable to different types of substrates to prepare patterned plasmonic nanoarrays such as nanoislands, nanoclusters, ultra-small nanodots, and core-satellite superstructures. The localized surface plasmon resonance from these nanostructures can be easily tuned by adjusting the morphology of the AAO template. The custom AAO template provides a platform for the fabrication of low-cost and large-scale functional nanoarrays suitable for fundamental studies as well as applications including biochemical sensing, imaging, photocatalysis, and photovoltaics.

Abstract:Alumina nanowire arrays standing on the surface of a porous anodic alumina membrane have been achieved by first forming a porous anodic alumina membrane with parallel Y-branched nanochannels by reducing the applied anodizing voltage by a factor of in the anodization process of high-purity Al foil, and then chemically etching the Y-branched nanochannel alumina membrane in an aqueous phosphoric acid solution. The novel nanostructures may be used for two-dimensional photonic bandgap structural materials.

Abstract:The capability to realize 2D-3D controllable metallic micro/nanostructures is of key importance for various fields such as plasmonics, electronics, bioscience, and chemistry due to unique properties such as electromagnetic field enhancement, catalysis, photoemission, and conductivity. However, most of the present techniques are limited to low-dimension (1D-2D), small area, or single function. Here we report the assembly of self-organized three-dimensional (3D) porous metal micro/nanocages arrays on nickel surface by ethanol-assisted femtosecond laser irradiation. The underlying formation mechanism was investigated by a series of femtosecond laser irradiation under exposure time from 5 to 30 ms. We also demonstrate the ability to control the size of micro/nanocage arrays from 0.8 to 2 μm by different laser pulse energy. This method features rapidness (∼10 min), simplicity (one-step process), and ease of large-area (4 cm(2) or more) fabrication. The 3D cagelike micro/nanostructures exhibit not only improved antireflection from 80% to 7% but also enhanced hydrophobicity from 98.5° to 142° without surface modification. This simple technique for 3D large-area controllable metal microstructures will find great potential applications in optoelectronics, physics, and chemistry.

Abstract:Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) has attracted significant intension for decades owing to its extensive applications in nanoscale science and technology. Novel structures, like nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanowires, etc., have been developed based on AAO templates and widely applied in optics, micro/nano electronics and microfluidic systems, etc. In this work, three approaches have been developed to control and modify the parameters and arrangement of nanopores in anodized alumina, including the change of electrochemical conditions, guiding the growth of nanopores by highly aligned line structure, and further modification of nanopores by physical vapor deposition. Moreover, highly oriented line structures used to guide the channel growth have been fabricated under optimal conditions and could be utilized as templates to form wrinkled membranes, nanowires, etc. We conclude that electrochemical anodization should be a very promising technique for the fabrication of various nanoscale structures leading to potential applications in optics, solar systems and micro/nano electronics.

Abstract:In this paper, a new method for preparing a nanohole surface based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is proposed. In the proposed method, a layer of gold film is sputtered onto the upper and lower surfaces of porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) by ion sputtering to obtain the composite structure of Au/AAO/Au (Metal-Media-Metal, MIM) periodic hole array. The periodic plasma excitation conditions and coupling of the nanohole array are deduced using Maxwell's equations to obtain the locally enhanced surface plasma wave. Afterward, the composite structure is irradiated with a nanosecond laser with a working wavelength of 532 nm to excite the surface plasmon. Simulation results show that Au/AAO/Au (MIM) can excite the surface plasmon under laser induction, and the preparation of nanoholes is realized through experiments. The nanohole array produced by surface plasmon can be used to increase the specific surface area. For some biosensors with special properties, such as microcantilever, enzyme, and other biosensors, a large surface area is required without changing their chemical stability and mechanical strength to increase the detection sensitivity.

Abstract:With more and more attention given to the plasmonic nanostructures enhancing light trapping of solar cells, the fabrication of metal nanostructures becomes more and more important. In this work, we fabricated porous anodic alumina on SiO2/GaAs substrate and obtained periodic Ag nanodots with hemispherical shape by electron beam evaporation. During the experiments, it was found that the properties of barrier layers of porous anodic alumina fabricated on SiO2/GaAs and SiO2/Si substrates after pore-widening are different. The through-hole porous anodic alumina film on SiO2/GaAs substrate cannot be obtained after a long pore-widening process. The additional Ar ion bombardment against the samples was needed in our experiments to get the through-hole porous anodic alumina films on SiO2/GaAs substrate.

Abstract:Most fabrication methods of metallic nanostructures are time-consuming with multi-steps, which are difficult to achieve low-cost batch processing. In this study, joint laser process of laser shock polishing & imprinting (LSPI) is proposed to efficiently fabricate large-area nanostructures on the surface of cheap industrial aluminum foil without any pre-processing step. LSPI tailors the laser parameters of single laser manufacturing equipment to apply laser shock polishing (LSP) to polish the aluminum foil, and then laser shock imprinting (LSI) to obtain nanostructures with high accuracy, integrity and uniformity. This unique characteristic of proposed LSPI is enabled by pre-taking LSP process to improve the yield of following LSI process through significantly decreasing the surface roughness of aluminum foil. LSPI also reduces the aluminum residue inside the silicon mold, which improves the integrity of resultant nanostructure and facilitates the reuse of the mold. The working mechanism of LSPI are also investigated to reveal its fundamental fabrication principle, which may inspire other low-cost and efficient batch fabrication method for metallic nanostructures manufacturing in the future.

Abstract:A reliable, scalable, and inexpensive technology for the fabrication of ordered arrays of metal nanoparticles with large areal coverage on various substrates is presented. The nanoparticle arrays were formed on aluminum substrates using a two-step anodization process. By varying the anodization potential, the pore diameter, inter-pore spacing, and pore ordering in the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template were tuned. Following a chemical etch, the height of the pores in the AAO membrane were reduced to create a dimpled membrane surface. Periodic arrays of metal nanoparticles were subsequently created by evaporating metal on to the dimpled surface, allowing for individual nanoparticles to form within the dimples by a solid state de-wetting process induced by annealing. The ordered nanoparticle array could then be transferred to a substrate of choice using a polymer lift-off method. Following optimization of the experimental parameters, it was possible to obtain cm2 coverage of metal nanoparticles, like gold and indium, on silicon, quartz and sapphire substrates, with average sizes in the range of 50–90 nm. The de-wetting process was investigated for a specific geometry of the dimpled surface and the results explained for two different film thicknesses. Using a simple model, the experimental results were interpreted and supported by numerical estimations.

Wafer-Scale Fabrication of Metal Nanoring and Nanocrescent Arrays from Nanoimprinted Nanopillar Arrays

Abstract:An approach was presented to fabricate wafer-scale nanoring structures based on nanopillar array templates fabricated by nanoimprint lithography. This fabrication method combined UV-curing nanolithography technology, metal deposition, and an etching process, which made it possible to tune the geometric properties of nanorings: height, diameter, and linewidth for various materials, such as Au and Ni. Nanoring arrays showed potential applications in many fields, including memory storage, biosensing, and optical devices. The optical measurement of Au nanorings (d = 380 nm) showed its strong transmission resonances at the wavelength of 2.1 mu m. A modified version of this fabrication method by depositing Ni in a controlled angle as a sacrificial layer was also utilized to create nanocrescent arrays. This modified method could easily tune the width of crescents through the nickel deposition angles and nanopillar template heights. The large-area gold nanocrescent arrays showed strong polarization-dependent transmission bands. Plasmonic crescent structures were expected to apply in infrared metamaterial and chemical sensing. Abstract:We demonstrate a new approach for forming hybrid metal/carbonaceous nanostructures in a controlled direct laser planting process. Au-Ag nanoclusters in amorphous or crystalline carbonaceous matrices are formed with different morphology: nanoparticles, nanoflakes, and nanoflowers. In contrast to other generation techniques our approach is simple, involving only a single laser-induced process transforming supramolecular complexes dissolved in solvent such as acetone, acetophenone, or dichloroethane into hybrid nanostructures in the laser-affected area of the substrate. The morphology of the hybrid nanostructures can be steered by controlling the deposition parameters, the composition of the liquid phase and the type of substrate, amorphous or crystalline. The carbonaceous phase of the hybrid nanostructures consists of hydrogenated amorphous carbon in the case of nanoparticles and of crystalline orthorhombic graphite of nanoscale thickness in the case of flakes and flowers. To the best of our knowledge this is the first demonstration of the fabrication of orthorhombic graphite with metal nano inclusions. The remarkable quality and regularity of the micron-sized nanoscale thickness single crystal flakes allows for cutting high resolution nano scale structures, which in combination with the metallic nano inclusions offer much design freedom for creating novel devices for nano photonic applications. The encouraging properties of the nanomaterials with different composition, size and shape stimulate the development of efficient synthesis strategies aimed at fine-tuning the functionality.
Fabrication of Sub-20 Nm Nanopore Arrays in Membranes with Embedded Metal Electrodes at Wafer Scales

Abstract:We introduce a method to fabricate solid-state nanopores with sub-20 nm diameter in membranes with embedded metal electrodes across a 200 mm wafer using CMOS compatible semiconductor processes. Multi-layer (metal-dielectric) structures embedded in membranes were demonstrated to have high uniformity (± 0.5 nm) across the wafer. Arrays of nanopores were fabricated with an average size of 18 ± 2 nm in diameter using a Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) method in lieu of TEM drilling. Shorts between the membrane-embedded metals were occasionally created after pore formation, but the RIE based pores had a much better yield (99%) of unshorted electrodes compared to TEM drilled pores (<10%). A double-stranded DNA of length 1 kbp was translocated through the multi-layer structure RIE-based nanopore demonstrating that the pores were open. The ionic current through the pore can be modulated with a gain of 3 using embedded electrodes functioning as a gate in 0.1 mM KCl aqueous solution. This fabrication approach can potentially pave the way to manufacturable nanopore arrays with the ability to electrically control the movement of single or double-stranded DNA inside the pore with embedded electrodes.

Abstract:Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) or anodic alumina template containing hexagonally ordered nanopores has been widely used over the last decade for the development of numerous functional nanostructures such as nanoscale sensors, computing networks and memories. The long range pore order requires the starting aluminum surface to be extremely smooth. Electropolishing is the most commonly used method for surface planarization prior to anodization. While prevalent, this method has several limitations in terms of throughput, polishing area and requirement of special experimental setups, which introduce additional speed bottlenecks in the intrinsically slow AAO-based nanofabrication process. In this work we report a new generation of the so-called "chemical polishing" approach which circumvents these stumbling blocks in the pretreatment phase and offers a viable, simpler, safer and faster alternative to electropolishing. These benefits are obtained without sacrificing the quality of the final AAO template. In this work we have (a) identified the optimum parameter regime for chemical polishing and (b) determined process conditions for which a novel parallel nanoridge configuration self-assembles and extends over a distance of several microns. Such patterns can be used as a mask for fabricating nanocrossbars, which are the main structural components in myriad nanoscale memories and crosspoint architectures.

Abstract:A facile and reproducible one-step pathway has been developed for preparing ordered arrays of mesoporous carbon nanostructures within the pores of anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) membranes, through the confined self-assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resol and amphiphilic copolymer templates. The morphology of the mesoporous carbon nanostructures can be controlled by varying the copolymer surfactant, the quantity of the resol–surfactant precursor sol used and the amount of phenol–formaldehyde resol introduced into the resol–surfactant sol. One-dimensional (1-D) carbon nanostructures, such as carbon fibres with a core–shell structure and carbon ribbons with circular mesopores running parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ribbons, have been successfully prepared. More importantly, the orientation of the mesoporous channels within these 1-D carbon nanostructures can be tuned by changing the mean pore diameter of the AAO membranes and the surfactants used in their preparation. The conductive properties of these vertically aligned mesoporous carbon nanofibres within the AAO membranes have been characterised by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM).

Abstract:A novel nanostructured sandwich PAA/Al/PAA (PAA: porous anodic alumina) was successfully designed and fabricated by anodic oxidation on both sides of an At foil. The pore size of the PAA membranes was controlled by choosing appropriate voltage, length of anodic oxidization time, temperature and electrolytes. The thickness of the central At layer was varied by changing the anodic oxidization time. We show that the nanostructured sandwich PAA/Al/PAA can be used as a template in fabricating homogeneous or heterogeneous nanostructured sandwiches by depositing the same kind of material or different materials into the PAA membranes of the sandwich. We also show that it can be used to prepare nanowires and bipolar electrodes. In addition, Al nanosheets or Al nanowalls were produced by removing the PAA films completely or partially. Nanogaps between the PAA films were also formed by etching away the centre At layer of the sandwich structures. The thickness of these nanosheets, nanowalls and nanogaps was controlled by choosing appropriate electrolytes and electrochemical parameters during the anodic oxidation of At. All these nanostructures offer novel opportunities for both fundamental research and technological applications of low dimensional nanostructure systems.
