Abstract:Rectal cancer (RC), a disease in which a malignant tumor is formed in the digestive system, is currently among the top 5 cancers in terms of morbidity and mortality rates. [ 1 , 2 ] In nearly 70% of rectal cancer cases, the tumor occurs in the low part of the anal verge, [ 3 , 4 ] and maximizing the protection of the patient's physiological functions while treating the disease is a challenge for surgeons. [ 5 , 6 ] The implementation of total mesenteric resection and preoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy significantly reduces the local recurrence rate of the disease and improves the survival rate of rectal cancer patients. [ 7 ] However, the prognosis was not significantly improved in patients with ultralow rectal cancer compared to patients with middle and upper rectal cancers. [ 8 ]
