Abstract:Spinal anesthesia (SA), a form of central neuraxial blockade, involves the temporary interruption of nerve conduction by introducing a local anesthetic agent into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the subarachnoid space. The inception of SA dates back to 1898 when Bier administered a cocaine injection. Anesthesiologists commonly favor SA for lower extremity surgeries, particularly in orthopedic procedures involving the lower extremities where tourniquets are frequently employed. Recent research has indicated an elevation in intracranial pressure subsequent to SA, tourniquet inflation, and deflation during total knee replacement surgeries. [ 1 ]
