Abstract:By using nanoindentation techniques combined with transmission electron microscope, wide-/small-angle X-ray scattering, and three-dimensional atom probe tomography, the sub-nanometer- to nanometer-length-scale structural heterogeneity due to the precipitation of Co(Fe)-rich clusters was observed in [(Co0.7Fe0.3)(0.68)B0.219Si0.051Nb0.05](100-x)Cu-x (x = 0.5) metallic glasses. Such short-range ordered structure promotes energy dissipation during deformation via regulating intrinsic elastic constants and hardness at the mesoscale, which contributes to the improved compressive plasticity of Cu-doped (Fe, Co)-based metallic glasses. Our work provides new evidence on atomic-scale heterogeneity in Cu-doped metallic glasses from the aspects of topological orders and microscopic mechanical responses. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Formation and optical properties of copper nanoclusters in a silicate glass

Abstract:In this letter, copper nanoclusters formation was observed in Cu-doped silicate glasses after UV-light irradiation followed by thermal annealing. After heating at 460°C for 45min, the Cu nanoclusters formed only in the UV-light irradiated glass, but not appeared in the un-irradiated sample. The critical temperature around at 460°C was found in the irradiated sample to form Cu nanoclusters. Thermal annealing at the temperature above this critical point would form Cu nanoclusters both in the irradiated and un-irradiated glasses. Compared to the un-irradiated sample, the UV-light irradiated glass usually had more free electrons, and then more Cu+ could trap electrons to form atoms.

Abstract:We reported a series of phosphosilicate glasses containing different Cu species (Cu-0, Cu+ and Cu2+). With X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron telescope (TEM), and absorption spectra (UV-Vis), Cu0 NPs and Cu+ were identified in the glasses with low Cu concentrations (0.02; 0.04; 0.1 mol%), and Cu+ and Cu2+ were identified in the glasses with high Cu concentrations (0.2; 0.4; 0.6 mol%). Raman spectra gave a clue that the quantity of non-bridged oxygens were related with the oxidation of Cu+ -> Cu2+ at high Cu concentration. With photoluminescence spectra(PL) and time resolved decay spectra, different Cu+ sites were discovered with octahedral coordination predominantly with different tetragonal distortions, and ETs from Cu+ to Cu2+ were also revealed with proposed mechanisms. The study in understanding the structural effect of Cu-doped glass on luminescence would be an important step towards the rational design of transition metal doped luminescent glasses for various applications. Fabrication and Visible Emissions of ZnO Nanocrystal Doped Transparent Zinc Silicate Glass-Ceramics

Abstract:ZnO nanocrystals doped transparent glass and glass-ceramics with visible emissions were successfully synthesized through melt-quenching method. Structures and defect-related photoluminescence of quenched glasses and glass-ceramics were significantly dependent on ZnO content in precursor and post heat treatment time. Nano-sized ZnO crystals could generate in quenched glass before heat treatment with a particular precursor composition (44SiO(2)-11Al(2)O(3)-40ZnO-10K(2)O, mol%), and this quenched glass emitted strong green emission. For glass-ceramics, short time (5 min) heat treatment was conducive to intensive green or yellow emission depending on the excitation energy. Further extending of heat treatment resulted in yellow emission as the dominant one, together with a decline of intensity due to reduced defects. Moreover, the emission peaks shifted towards longer wavelength, from violet, blue, to green and yellow, with an increase of heat treatment time, which can be ascribed to different defect states along with crystal growth during heat treatment. Green light corresponded to oxygen vacancies (V-0), the main defect of ZnO before heat treatment, whereas yellow light was associated with the transition from zinc interstitials (Zn-i) to oxygen interstitials (O-i) produced with the structure transformation during heat treatment. Yellow emission can emit with both above- and below-bandgap excitation, and preferentially excited by energy (395 nm, similar to 3.14 eV) below the bandgap, near Zn-i level. Green emission was only efficient under the excitation larger than bandgap. Defect-based mechanisms of visible emissions with different initial states were proposed. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Scintillators are essential for high-energy radiation detection in a variety of potential applications. However, due to complex fabrication processes and nanocrystal homogeneity, conventional scintillators are challenging to meet the need for cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and flexible X-ray detection. Here, monodisperse nanocrystals (NCs) with small grain size and colloidal stability are obtained by adjusting the doping concentration of Zn2+ ions and controlling the morphology uniformity of Cs3Cu2I5 NCs. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for the optimal doping concentration is as high as 92.8%, which is a 28.5% improvement compared to nondoped NCs. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Zn2+ dopant inclines to occupy Cu sites and the I-rich condition suppresses the formation of I vacancy, enriching the excited electron density at the band-edge to enhance the self-trapped exciton emission. Moreover, high luminescence performance and flexible X-ray scintillator films are prepared using Zn2+-doped Cs3Cu2I5 NCs, with a spatial resolution of up to 15.7 lp mm(-1). This work provides an effective strategy for the development of environmentally friendly, low-cost, and efficient blue-emitting 0D all-inorganic metal halides, as well as shows their great potential for high-performance flexible lead-free and low-toxicity X-ray detector applications.
From Phase Separation to Nanocrystallization in Fluorosilicate Glasses: Structural Design of Highly Luminescent Glass-Ceramics

Abstract:Tremendous enhancement of optical emission efficiency was achieved in fluorosilicate glasses by growing lanthanide doped fluoride nanocrystals embedded in oxide glass matrix. The formation mechanism of the microstructure was elucidated by combining solid-state NMR, scanning TEM, EDX map, and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the growth of fluoride nanocrystals in fluorosilicate glass was originated from fluoride phase separation. Atomic level structures of phase separation of fluoride-rich regions in oxyfluoride glasses matrix were observed from both EDX maps and MD simulations, and it was found that, while silicon exclusively coordinated by oxygen and alkali earth ions and lanthanide mainly coordinated by fluorine, aluminum played the role of linking the two fluoride glass and oxide glass regions by bonding to both oxygen and fluoride ions.

Abstract:An ionic‐covalent hybrid glass network is designed to fabricate transparent and stable glass ceramic scintillator with high crystallinity of BaCl2: Eu nanocrystals, which exhibits strong radioluminescence characterized by a light yield 132% of Bi4Ge3O14 single crystal. Besides, the transparent glass ceramic scintillator can be applied as X‐ray imaging application with a high spatial resolution of 20 lp mm−1. Metal halide crystals are bright but hygroscopic scintillator materials that are widely used in X‐ray imaging and detectors. Precipitating them in situ in glass to form glass ceramics (GCs) scintillator offers an efficient avenue for large‐scale preparation, high spatial resolution, and excellent stability. However, precipitating a high fraction of metal halide nanocrystals in glass to maintain high light yield remains a challenge. Herein, an ionic‐covalent hybrid network strategy for constructing GCs scintillator with high crystallinity (up to ≈37%) of BaCl2: Eu2+ nanocrystals is presented. Experimental data and simulations of glass structure reveal that the Ba2+‐Cl− clustering promotes the high crystallization of BaCl2 nanocrystals. The ultralow phonon energy (≈200 cm−1) of BaCl2 nanocrystals and good Eu reduction effect enable high photoluminescence inter quantum efficiency (≈80.41%) in GC. GCs with varied crystallinity of BaCl2: Eu2+ nanocrystals demonstrate efficient radioluminescence and tunable scintillator performance. They either outperform Bi4Ge3O14 single crystal by over 132% steady‐state light yield or provide impressive X‐ray imaging resolutions of 20 lp mm−1. These findings provide a new design strategy for developing bright transparent GCs scintillators with a high fraction of metal halide nanocrystals for X‐ray high‐resolution imaging applications.

Abstract:Structures and optical properties of embedded copper clusters have been studied by EXAFS and optical absorption. The experiments demonstrate that (1) the interatomic distances contract and mean coordination number decreases as the cluster size decreases. (2) Optical resonances are greatly enhanced at visible region. These may be due to quantum size effect of the clusters themselves and the influence by its surrounding medium.

Abstract:In this letter, copper nanoclusters formation was observed in Cu-doped silicate glasses after UV-light irradiation followed by thermal annealing. Spectroscopic data indicated that Cu+ transferred to Cu atoms after irradiation. The aggregation of Cu atoms appeared after heating at 500°C for 30min, resulting in an absorption band at about 560nm, due to the surface plasmon resonance of Cu nanoclusters in glass. The band intensity of the absorption peak increases with heating time at 500°C. The mean nanocluster size estimated based on Mie theory was ∼2.3nm after heated at 500°C for 120min. The Cu nanoclusters only formed in the irradiated area of the glass.

Abstract:Unlike conventional amorphous materials without grain boundaries and dislocations, nanoglasses consist of amorphous nanoparticles and glass-glass interfaces, which results in unique properties. In this work, we have developed a ZrO2-Cu composite nanoglass by multi-target magnetron co-sputtering, and its microstructure, optical and electrical properties have been studied by using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope, spectroscopic ellipsometry, UV-Visible spectrophotometer and Hall measurements. It is found that Cu is enriched into the amorphous interfacial region. The ZrO2-Cu composite nanoglass shows high visible light transmittance (over 70%), high refractive index (1.98-2.08) and large optical band gap (5.0-5.7 eV). As the Cu content increases, the electrical properties are also improved. The enrichment of Cu at the interface further provides a new route for the preparation of 2D nano-conducting networks.

Abstract:The direct laser writing (DLW) of photoluminescent metal clusters is inspiring intensive research in functional glasses. However, understanding the influence of the host structure on cluster formation and visualizing DLW-induced clusters at the atomic scale remains challenging. In this work, we develop a highly photosensitive fluorophosphate glass through fluorine incorporation. The addition of fluorine establishes a conducive environment for Ag+ ions before DLW and enhances the availability of reducing agents and diffusion pathways during DLW. These advantages facilitate the formation of Ag clusters under low-energy single-pulsed DLW. Increasing laser energy results in a combination of Ag clusters and glasses defect, forming a dot + ring photoluminescent pattern. Atom probe tomography (APT), a technique capable of mapping the elemental spatial distribution and identifying clustering, is employed to gain more information on laser-induced clusters. Comparison of APT results between samples without and with DLW reveals the formation of Ag clusters after laser writing. The design concept and characterization enrich the understanding of Ag cluster behavior in glasses. This knowledge opens the possibility of rational design of clusters confined in glasses and inspires their synthesis for various applications.

Abstract:We report a method for the selective introduction of fluorescent Ag nanoclusters in glass. Extinction and photoluminescence spectra show that a fraction of the Ag atoms are generated through femtosecond laser induced multiphoton reduction and then aggregate to form Ag nanoclusters after heat treatment. Red luminescence from the irradiated region is observed under blue or green laser excitation. The fluorescence can be attributed to interband transitions within Ag nanoclusters. This method provides a novel route to fabricate fluorescent nanomaterials in 3D transparent materials.

APT results demonstrated that DLW effectively halves the distance between adjacent Ag+ ions, leading to a significant increase in the abundance of Ag QCs with various aggregations, as well as a 31-fold increase in cluster density. The design concept and characterization enrich our understanding of Ag QCs behavior in glasses. This new knowledge opens up possibilities for the rational design of clusters confined in glasses and inspires their directed synthesis and various applications.

Abstract:We report density fluctuations spanning from nano-to micrometer scale in the three-dimensional (3D) space in metallic glasses (MGs) detected with synchrotron X-ray nano-computed tomography, which decouple with the chemical homogeneity. The MG quenched from fragile supercooled liquid exhibits a more heterogeneous microstructure with a gradient density fluctuation. Severe inhomogeneous deformation rejuvenates the microstructure of the MG with the creation of a large amount of low-density regions, which percolate into shear-band-like layers. Ramified 2.5-dimensional fractal low-density regions exist in all the MGs with the correlation length increasing with microstructural heterogeneity. The formation of the density fluctuations with fractal order in the MGs is discussed based on the percolation of low-density regions and shear transformation zones during the glass transition and deformation processes. Our results directly demonstrate the existence of fractal low-density entropic droplets in MGs affected by fragilities and thermomechanical histories, which could be significant for understanding and controlling the disordered structure of amorphous solids.

Abstract:The structure of Cu64Zr36 metallic glasses is investigated on the scale of nanometers using local shear strain marking in molecular dynamics simulation. Densely packed clusters with sizes ranging from 1.5 to 2.5nm are unambiguously shown comparable to the size of the reported medium range order, surrounded by loosely packed interconnecting regions with a low density. The clusters are mainly composed of full and defective icosahedra, while no dominant short-ordered motifs are identified in the surroundings. High resolution transmission electron microscopy reproduces the observation of simulations.

Abstract:A colorless transparent, blue green emission material was fabricated by sintering porous glass impregnated with copper ions. The emission spectral profile obtained from Cu+ -doped high silica glass (HSG) by 267-mn monochromatic light excitation matches that obtained by pumping with an 800-nm femtosecond laser, indicating that the emissions in both cases come from an identical origin. The upconversion emission excited by 800-nm femtosecond laser is considered to be a three-photon excitation process. A tentative scheme of upconverted emission from Cu+ -doped HSG was also proposed. The glass materials presented herein are expected to find application in lamps, high density optical storage, and three-dimensional color displays.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite materials exhibit excellent scintillation performance,which,however,suffer from serious stability and toxicity problems.In contrast,the heavy metal-free anti-perovskite materials[MX 4 ]XA 3 （A=alkali metal;M=transition metal;X=Cl,Br,I）,a class of electron-inverted perovskite derivatives,exhibit robust structural and photophysical stability.Here,we design and prepare a lead-free[MnBr 4 ]BrCs 3 anti-perovskite nanocrystal（NC）-embedded glass for efficient X-ray-excited luminescence with high-resolution X-ray imaging with a spatial resolution of 19.1 Ip mm -1 .Due to the unique crystal structure and the protection of the glass matrix,the Cs 3 MnBr 5 NC-embedded glass exhibits excellent X-ray irradiation stability,thermal stability,and water resistance.These merits enable the demonstration of real-time and durable X-ray radiography based on the developed glassy composite.This work could stimulate the research and development of novel metal halide anti-perovskite materials and open a new path for future development in the field of high-resolution and ultrastable X-ray imaging.
Large-scale synthesis, mechanism, and application of a luminescent copper hydride nanocluster

Abstract:Elucidating the structure-property relationships of ultra-small metal nanocluster with basic nuclear is of great significance for understanding the evolution mechanism in both the structures and properties of polynuclear metal nanoclusters. In this study, an ultra-small copper hydride (CuH for short) nanocluster was simply synthesized with high yield, and the large-scale preparation was also achieved. Single crystal X-ray diffractometer (SC-XRD) analysis shows that this copper NC contains a tetrahedral Cu4 core co-capped by four PPh2Py ligands and two Cl in which the existence of the central H atom in tetrahedron was further identified experimentally and theoretically. This CuH nanocluster exhibits bright yellow emission, which is proved to be the mixture of phosphorescence and fluorescence by the sensitivity of both emission intensity and lifetime to O2. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent emission spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the luminescence of CuH mainly originates from the metal-to-ligand charge transfer and cluster-centered triplet excited states. This work offers new insights into understanding the structure-property relationship of basic nuclear CuH nanocluster.
