Abstract:In studies of CO2 immobilization in recycled fine powder, a method called dry carbonation, in which samples are carbonated in air at controlled relative humidity, has been considered. It has been reported that calcium carbonate, which is synthesized by dry carbonation of hardened cement containing calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), gradually decomposes from low temperatures around 480℃ in Thermogravimeter-Differential Thermal Analyzer (TG-DTA). The calcium carbonate synthesized by dry carbonation of the synthesized C-S-H also gradually decomposes from around 480℃. On the other hand, calcium carbonate is known to decompose from around 650℃. Therefore, the thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate from low temperatures around 480℃ is inconsistent with the behavior of the thermal decomposition of the general calcium carbonate. In this study, the difference in behavior of thermal decomposition between calcium carbonate generated from dry carbonation of synthesized C-S-H and single phase of calcium carbonate synthesized by solution reaction was clarified by TG-DTA. To investigate the cause of this difference, the behavior of the thermal decomposition of synthesized C-S-H after dry carbonation was analyzed. As a result, it was clarified that the mechanism of thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate from low temperature can be explained by the chemical reaction between calcium carbonate and silica gel.
