Abstract:Amid a time of social protest against systemic racism, the author recalls an experience of her own racism as a white literacy researcher and ELA educator. She acknowledges and describes her racism as both a means to redesign teaching practice and an invitation to other ELA educators to allow the discomfort that can come with reflection. Drawing on Bettina Love’s articulation of abolitionist teaching, as well as scholars in critical English pedagogy and critical literacies, the author focuses on the problem of segregated knowledge flows and shares ways in which she is disrupting this systematic tendency.

Abstract:<span>Educational innovations such as 'no-excuses' charter schools have emerged as a discipline-focused approach to schooling as they are predicated on communicating high-expectations and personal responsibility. As 'no-excuses' charters are replicated across the United States as part of a neoliberal education reform policy, there continues to be prevailing stereotypes about the Black and Latinx populations in these spaces by teachers, the majority of whom are White. Yet not every White teacher within this context espouses the academic and behavioural socialisation associated with 'no-excuses' contexts. The findings of this phenomenological study suggest that White educators can become allies of Black and Latinx students but fail to create consistent affirming spaces due to an unrelenting implicit organisational pressure that we identify as 'no-excuses pressure,' that works against educators becoming full resistors and works against Black and Latinx students' full humanity. The paper concludes with implications on how to build critical resistance for all teachers, especially those within a 'no-excuses' context.</span>

Abstract:This article explores the relationship between teachers' emotions and possibilities for their activism. Using the lens of emotion labor and grounded in a discursive approach to emotions, it examines English language teachers' responses to institutional power. High-stakes literacy testing is used as an example of top-down institutional policies that may conflict with English language teachers' training and/or pedagogical preferences thereby producing emotion labor. However, rather than viewing emotion labor as a psychological impediment, the article proposes that it be honored, in the service of teacher activism. Suggestions for recruiting emotion labor for transformational purposes are offered.

Abstract:This essay examines critical performative pedagogy within the context of a language course for immigrants and refugees. I adapt Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed practice as the framework for a critical performative English as a Second Language course. I use exemplars from the course to suggest implications for the theory and practice of critical performative pedagogy. These include the challenges of: negotiating educational contexts that normalize instructional ideology; describing and adapting performance practices that critique students’ and teachers’ ideological bodies while activating their performing bodies; and articulating social efficacy in relation to a given pedagogical practice.

Abstract:Journal of Early Childhood Literacy, Ahead of Print. This article is written for educators who serve as teachers, administrators, policy-makers in childcare settings, schools, classrooms, teacher preparation programs, programs that prepare educational researchers, and universities. Its purpose is to provide background, rationale, and support for individuals within those institutions to address the need to identify and counter anti-Black racist structures, policies, and practice within and beyond educational spaces. While the focus is on spaces connected to early literacy education, the content of this article will also be useful for educators and educational researchers in other areas of education. After providing a framework in Critical Race and Black Critical theories and addressing attempts to interrupt and take down any teaching about racial histories or contemporary issues, the authors provide extensive lists of questions that can be used for educational stakeholders to root out anti-Blackness in their institutions. A few of the elements of institutions addressed in this article include: early literacy and teacher preparation curriculum; decisions about academic futures and disciplinary measures based on biased assessments, testing, attitudes, and perceptions; hiring and retaining Black faculty and administration; and much more. Written with love and a sense of urgency and joy in the process of change, this article will provide impetus but also explicit guidance for educators to examine and analyze elements of their own institutions and use findings to engage in change that centers the excellence, joy, resistance, and resilience of Black people.

Abstract:While there has been an increasing interest in English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ research engagement and researcher identity construction, scant attention has been paid to tensions caused by the issue of power relations in their research practice. This study draws on data from semi-structured interviews complemented with data from narrative frames and document analysis to examine the influence of power relations on the research practice of six EFL academics and their coping strategies at a Chinese university. The data analysis reveals that for the participants in the study, even though they were driven to be engaged in research practice by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, they found that their research endeavors were undermined by the marginalized status of EFL researchers from non-elite universities, as imposed by the Chinese academic circle. Nevertheless, in the face of potential bias against their peripheral academic status, they exerted their agency with micropolitical literacy and tried to seek a way out of the unfavorable academic culture. As EFL teachers at regular universities are increasingly expected to be more research-active and research-productive, more attention and support are needed to facilitate their professional development and researcher identity construction.

Abstract:This study seeks to define a “space” where otherwise marginalized students might participate more centrally in classroom literacy events. Drawing on Lave and Wenger, the study is concerned with the differential effects of a classroom literacy event on the academic identities of two students in a group of four, both of whom felt insecure as writers. Drawing on the work of Kenneth Burke and de Certeau, the study regards rhetorical maneuvers as resistance to the social designs of others. From this theoretical vantage point, using a range of methods for analyzing language as social action (derived mainly from the work of Erving Goffman), the study shows how one student's rhetorical maneuvers performed her resistance to a more dominant peer and, simultaneously, her understanding of written text; nevertheless, her authorial rights were expropriated by her peers. An adult observer (the author) did not recognize and did nothing to arbitrate the student's marginalization. The analysis identifies implicit meta-textual issues from the students' talk and suggests that a sufficiently powerful (explanatory) theory of text could help to mediate more equitable negotiations of what counts as text in classroom literacy activities.

Where Do We Go from Here? Toward a Critical Race English Education

Abstract:In this article, I propose Critical Race English Education (CREE) as a theoretical and pedagogical construct that tackles white supremacy and anti-black racism within English education and ELA classrooms. I employ autoethnography and counterstorytelling as methods that center my multiple identities and lived realities as I document my racialized and gendered experiences in relation to my journey to Ferguson, MO and my experiences as a secondary ELA teacher. The research questions guiding this study are the following: (1) As a Black male English educator and language and literacy scholar, how am I implicated in the struggle for racial justice and what does it mean for me to teach literacy in our present-day justice movement?; (2) How are Black lives mattering in ELA classrooms?; and, (3) How are we using Black youth life histories and experiences to inform our mindset, curriculum, and pedagogical practices in the classroom?This article explicates findings from three interconnected stories that work to show how CREE can be operationalized to better understand the #BlackLivesMatter movement in its historical and contemporary dimensions. The data analyzed stem from my autobiographical narratives,observations, social media artifacts, and images. I aim to expand English education to be more synergistically attuned to racial justice issues dealing with police brutality, the mass incarceration of Black people, and legacies of grassroots activism. This analysis suggests implications that aim to move the pedagogical practices around the intersections of anti-blackness and literacy from the margins to the center of discussion and praxis in ELA contexts.

Critical, contextualized, content-rich: revisiting the call for humanizing pedagogies in literacy methods instruction

Abstract:Purpose In this study, the authors draw upon 10 years of collaborative teaching and research as two, White, women literacy teacher educators to theorize the role of humanizing pedagogies within literacy teacher education and share explicit examples of how these pedagogies might be operationalized in actual classroom settings. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on 10 years of qualitative, teacher inquiry research on authors’ shared practice as literacy teacher educators and has included focus groups with students, the collection of student work and extensive field notes on class sessions. Findings Contextualized within decades-old calls for humanizing teacher education practices, this study puts forward a framework for teaching literacy methods that centers critical, locally contextualized, content-rich approaches and provides detailed examples of how this study implemented this framework in two contrastive teacher education settings comprising different institutional barriers, regional student populations and program mandates. Originality/value The proposed framework of critical, locally contextualized and content-rich literacy methods offers one possibility for reconciling the divergent debates that perpetually shape literacy teaching and learning. As teachers are prepared to enter classrooms, the authors model concrete approaches and strategies for teaching reading within and against a sociopolitical landscape imbued with White supremacist ideals and racial bias.

In this essay, a teacher educator reflects on these conflicts in relation to her own practice and how she has made curricular changes to engage her students in this work.

Abstract:This article is a reflection on the recent report from the National Academy of Sciences, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children. This report, typical of many recent discussions of early reading instruction, centers on psycholinguistic aspects of reading having to do with phonological awareness, decoding, word recognition, and literal comprehension. I seek to reframe the report from the perspective of the New Literacy Studies, an interdisciplinary effort that takes a sociocultural approach to language and literacy. My approach is to stress tensions internal to the report itself as pressure points around which one could imagine a different sort of report being written, one more in the spirit of the New Literacy Studies. I take up issues such as whether or not there is a consensus in the reading field; the nature of the “literacy crisis”; relationships among reading, poverty, racism, and culture; whether or not technology leads to higher literacy demands; learning to read as against learning content; and the connections among phonological awareness, early language abilities, and the use of specific genres and registers in school.

Abstract:Increasing evidence of the re-segregation of students of color within special education suggests that the constructivist-explicit instruction debate may still be relevant for urban educators. While inclusive educators advocate learner-centered constructivist methods for supporting students with disabilities, mainstream special educators equally promote explicit instructional processes. This article describes the literacy instruction of two teachers who drew on both explicit pedagogy and constructivist approaches to student learning. They reconciled these oppositional frameworks through their focus on “real” reading outcomes for their students. I argue that the teachers’ deeper commitments rendered their eclectic approach a form of inclusive pedagogy.

Developing teacher feedback literacy through self-study: Exploring written commentary in a critical language writing curriculum

Abstract:Responding to student writing is complex, as many choices teachers make about the content, delivery, and purpose of feedback often remain beneath the surface of awareness. Incongruencies between teachers' feedback philosophies and practices are therefore common. Here, I analyze my own feedback practices, making a case for self-study as a method to promote teacher feedback literacy. Drawing upon classroom-data from a university developmental English writing context in the Northeastern US, I investigate my feedback practices alongside the implementation of a critical language awareness (CLA) curriculum. Deductively analyzing 301 comments provided to 27 students, I consider commentary's alignment to CLA principles. From this data, I selected five students' writing samples for further analysis, considering their writing development in interaction with CLA commentary. Results indicate some incongruencies between my philosophies and practices, as more than half of commentary showed weaker alignment to CLA principles, and it overwhelmingly addressed essay content (rather than organization or form). Commentary appeared to support the expansion of students' academic writing practices, especially in description, figurative language, argumentation, codemeshing, and source integration. I conclude reflecting on challenges associated with theoretically informed feedback and discuss the study's significance in expanding Lee's (2021) framework for writing teacher feedback literacy.

Constituting Identities That Challenge the Contemporary Discourse: Power, Discourse, Experience, and Emotion

Abstract:In this article, we use a narrative methodology to understand the work of three teachers who have constituted identities that have allowed them to challenge the contemporary discourse of science education. We describe how teachers’ evolving identities have been constituted through their responses to the discourses and situations of their work and their emotional response to these experiences. A Foucauldian analysis of the data indicates three important conclusions. The first is the need for, or development of, an environment that immerses teachers in discourse that allows, and actively supports, classroom practices that challenge the contemporary discourse. A key component of such discourse is an awareness of the emotional aspects of teaching. The second conclusion is the potential power of the mandated curriculum to legitimize, for teachers, discourses that challenge the contemporary discourse. Third, individual teachers may lack the power necessary to establish discourse environments that fully capitalize on their potential influence within the infrastructure of pedagogical science. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An Analysis of Preservice Teacher Responses to Participation in a Literacy Program for New Immigrant Children

Abstract:This qualitative examination of preservice teachers’ experiences as they volunteered for a literacy program for immigrant students was compiled over the 2010–2011 academic year. The data sources for this project consisted of 90 written journal reflections analyzed by both researchers to develop thematic categories of the participants’ comments and experiences that were reflected in the journals. Qualitative results generated from the university preservice teacher volunteers centered on four themes. These themes focused on (1) frustrations in working with ELL students, (2) pleasant experiences that confirmed their decision to enter the teaching profession, (3) recognizing that they are currently not well-prepared to work with diverse and/or low-income populations, and (4) surprises that language barriers were not as debilitating as what they had anticipated. Implications for preservice teacher education training are discussed.

Following the Child, Socioanalysis, and Threats to Community: Teacher Response to Children's Texts

Abstract:I brought two conceptions of teacher response to my teaching and research in a third-grade writing workshop. The first, drawn from workshop literature, emphasized following and supporting children's choices of topic and purpose for writing. Such a conception, however, ignored the problem of children pursuing questionable intentions and material in their texts, such as when children's texts affirm—even if unintentionally—gender, race, and social class stereotypes and boundaries. I developed a second conception of response—response as socioanalysis—from work by Habermas and Freire. Children's texts were conceived of as artifacts of an oppressive U.S. society (similar to how, in psychoanalysis, patients' stories are viewed as artifacts of Oedipal conflicts). The core of the paper is a detailed analysis of a particularly difficult occasion for teacher response. In this case, a popular child wanted to publish a fictional narrative that I read as an attack on an unpopular classmate. I examine how my interpretation of Maya's text, “The Zit Fit: The Lovers in the School,” depended on my knowledge of informal peer hierarchies and gender arrangements in the workshop and how my writing conferences with Maya were caught up in classroom norms and routines, as well as larger theoretical debates on the status of texts in the world and authors' responsibility for them. The case dramatizes the inadequacies of both following the child and socioanalysis as conceptions of response. I propose a revised conception of teacher response, and I argue that response must pay attention to the rhetorical play of children's texts in the classroom, and be aimed at encouraging and sustaining an engaged, pluralistic classroom community.

“I’m Not a Writer”: Shaping the Literacy-Related Attitudes and Beliefs of Students and Teachers in STEM Disciplines

Abstract:In this chapter I claim that many STEM students have developed negative attitudes and beliefs towards writing in science, often arising from earlier school experiences entailing their lack of self-efficacy as writers. These negative perceptions may be partly due to teacher attitudes but can also be traced to international and national curricular documents that tend to minimise the role of writing in developing and demonstrating science literacy. I argue that changes to STEM student literacy-related attitudes and beliefs need to emerge from within the STEM educational community in terms of how science education is defined.
Learner Resistance to English-medium Instruction Practices: a Qualitative Case Study

Abstract:The internationalization of higher education has resulted in the growth of English-medium instruction (EMI) practices and research. The existing EMI research has documented learners’ favorable attitudes toward EMI but not necessarily its practices. Learners’ dissatisfaction has not been viewed as a form of resistance. Through the notion of learner resistance that underscores agency in defiance, this study examined the occurrences of learner resistance and the reasons for it by investigating Chinese learners’ experiences in an undergraduate business English-taught program in Taiwan. Multiple sources of data, including interviews, stories, and class observations, were gathered for analysis. The findings showed that most Chinese learners resisted an unhelpful curriculum, pedagogy, and context. Their resistance may be related not simply to academic disciplines but more importantly to a Confucian Heritage Culture of learning. Such findings highlight learner agency in resisting actions and call for further investigation into potential learner resistance in EMI practices.

Abstract:Among inequities faced by multilingual learners, engagement in science education is one of the most persistent. Research suggests leveraging students' full multilingual repertoires in science education can help address this gap. However, pervasive monolingual norms in schooling may impede multilingual engagement, impacting students' multilingual identities and self-perceptions as science learners. Using observations and classroom artifacts from four seventh-grade life science classes in a linguistically diverse school district in the Southeastern United States, we documented one teacher's attempts to engage students' multilingual repertoires in science education during a four-week instructional unit. Our findings indicated student hesitancy to participate multilingually in science discourse. Using critical language awareness (CLA) as a lens, we draw connections between this reluctance and monolingual schooling norms that impact students' multilingual identities and present challenges to implementing linguistically sustaining pedagogies in English-medium instructional environments. By focusing on engaging students' multilingual repertoires in science education, these findings have the potential to advance research on teacher CLA—including its affordances and contextual limitations—in science education and beyond.

Abstract:Language teachers should not only facilitate learners to learn the language but also facilitate them to realize that every day’s discourses, including language and education, are socially constructed. This is where critical literacy (CL) plays its role as a frame through which teachers can actively and autonomously participate in the world around them and facilitate learners to be able to do so through learning instructions. CL functions as a universal tool, like bricoleur, one can use to see numerous social phenomena from a critical stance. It is a different way, lens, or teaching framework, believing that one should question every day’s discourses instead of just accepting them as they are, with the ultimate goal of promoting social justice. Hence, this paper explains the importance of CL in empowering both teachers and learners, how it works to serve this purpose, and some practical strategies of its implementation in a language class.
