Abstract:Thoughtfully planned professional development (PD) that fosters teacher agency has the potential to impact student agency in the literacy classroom. Drawing on a body of research with 82 teachers across multiple schools and clinical settings, this article first presents findings from a variety of PD contexts that are synthesized to highlight four guiding principles for designing professional learning that encourages both teacher and student agency. Then, the article illustrates one vignette of agentive literacy teaching, which was subsequently facilitative of students' agentic engagement with vocabulary learning. Throughout, the case is made that intentional and embedded opportunities for co-construction of knowledge and reciprocity between PD providers and teachers, teachers and leadership, and teachers and students are important ingredients for an agentic learning experience. Finally, conclusions are drawn emphasizing that teacher and student agency are forces of empowerment, critical to student and teacher well-being.

Abstract:This multi-phase mixed-methods study explores provider and recipient perceptions of the current state of early childhood professional development in a southeastern area of the United States. Professional development for the early childhood workforce has been shown to positively influence the quality of early childhood classrooms. This study examines 320 providers and 1022 recipients (including childcare teachers, Head Start teachers and 4k teachers in public school districts) who completed surveys examining the types of professional development opportunities they experienced over the previous year. Findings from these surveys were used to determine a subsample of providers (n = 20) and recipients (n = 27) who were interviewed to gain a deeper understanding of these experiences. Findings from this study indicate overall dissatisfaction with the quality and purpose of current professional development opportunities. Participants describe a lack of access to high-quality experiences and suggest that professional development requirements should be restructured to be based on recipient needs rather than focus on a prescribed set of topics. In addition, data suggest that follow-up support or evaluation of professional development experiences rarely occurs in these settings. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Abstract:Project Achieve is a professional development (PD) project that utilizes teacher leaders (TLs), former teachers who have been reassigned to provide school‐based mentoring, instruction, lesson plan assistance and modelling of lessons for urban middle school teachers. A primary goal of Project Achieve is to evaluate the extent to which TLs were able to increase teaching skill to such an extent that it positively impacted student learning. The results of this comparative case study reveal that Project Achieve was successful in improving teaching performance and increasing student achievement.

Abstract:Using data from a 2-year empirical project in an urban school within the United States, this article describes how educators of preschool, transitional-kindergarten and kindergarten (PreK-TK-K) altered perceptions and practices as a result of participating in a purposefully crafted professional learning community using collaborative enquiry. Emergent thematic findings highlight shifts in educator understanding and application of interactive reading practice and alignment across classrooms of young learners. This vertical professional learning community provided space and time where educators constructed meaning through collaborative enquiry, video observations and reflection, which informed educator thinking and enriched student interaction for literacy learning.

Emerging Pathways: A Teacher/Researcher's Reflexive Journey Implementing Literacy-Based Science Interventions With Adolescent English Language Learners

Abstract:This study explored the impact of instructional interventions with four Middle School English Language Learners in Science. The initial focus was to determine the impact of explicit academic vocabulary instruction, including cognates, and small-group guided discussions in order to facilitate the acquisition of cognates, academic vocabulary, and comprehension of scientific concepts. To accomplish this, various methods were implemented to gather data: observational and reflective field notes, a cognate-circling task, along with group and individual interviews. Upon the initial data analysis, an emerging question surfaced which added an additional dimension to the research, and shed light on the complexity of the teacher/research role. Thus, data analyzed and reflected both original and emerging questions, uncovering various patterns that impacted students’ learning. It also provided insight into how a researcher’s roles can affect the types and quality of data. Implications are provided for researchers, classroom teachers, bilingual teachers, professional development providers, and university programs developing new teachers.

Abstract:This study examined the effectiveness of a professional development (PD) experience on preschool teachers' instructional strategy development. Focusing on supporting young children's peer social competence as a common interest, preschool teachers were guided to design the specific contents of the PD workshops and were offered an on-site facilitation opportunity, delineating teacher-driven and job-embedded approaches, respectively. Findings from this study suggest that teacher-driven PD workshops significantly increased teachers' perceived feasibility of implementing instructional strategies, and their actual use of those strategies was significantly influenced by job-embedded facilitations. In addition, preschool teachers considered physical classroom environment and children's language to be the most challenging factors in their instructional strategy implementation. Implications and directions for an effective PD model for preschool teachers are discussed.

Abstract:Technology has reshaped conceptions of professional development by increasing access to information, enabling sustained follow-up efforts, and fostering teacher reflection and collaboration. Drawing on theoretical models of parent involvement and an ethic of caring, this study examined the perceptions and attitudes of educators toward collaborating with parents of children with disabilities. This inquiry utilized a digital documentary and online curriculum for inservice K-12 special education and general education teachers' professional development in a rural school district. Results indicate that teachers who participated in the online professional development showed increased recognition of the importance of collaborating with families. Limitations and implications for future research and practice are addressed in the article.

Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities

Abstract:Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities, Ahead of Print. This study investigates the impact of in-person professional development (PD) with ongoing emailed practice-based feedback (EPF) on teacher correct implementation of a multicomponent shared reading intervention for students with extensive support needs (ESN) embedded within general education (GE) instruction within three multiple baseline across skills designs. Skills within the shared reading intervention included (a) student engagement, reinforcement, and redirection, (b) planned questioning with wait time and error correction, and (c) in the moment data collection. A functional relation between PD with EPF package and teacher correct implementation of the multicomponent shared reading intervention was established for all three teachers. Teachers reported the experience was positive and felt comfortable delivering the small group shared reading intervention. No negative impact on student comprehension occurred. Findings show general and special educators can embed individualized shared reading using modified grade-level books and collect data on literacy skills for students with ESN in GE instruction with fidelity. This successfully implemented specialized instruction and data collection on the individualized educational goals of students with ESN provides more evidence that GE settings are an effective location for individualized service delivery and progress monitoring. Further implications for research and practice are shared.

Using Dialogic Reading as Professional Development to Improve Students’ English and Spanish Vocabulary

Abstract:Professional development was conducted to assess the effects of dialogic reading (DR) on child outcomes related to vocabulary development in English and Spanish. Six teachers and 72 children enrolled in a state-funded public universal prekindergarten program, partnering with higher education, participated in the study. The content of the professional development consisted of research-based DR strategies and vocabulary for English-only, bilingual, and Spanish-dominant speakers. The format included in-service training workshops, consultations, and reflections within community of practice meetings. The results showed that the intervention led to an increase in vocabulary over time within and across language groups. Regardless of teacher experience and educational training, vocabulary for all prekindergarten children improved. Suggestions are offered for replicating DR techniques in early care and development settings. Findings add to the importance of providing instruction in vocabulary for low socioeconomic status prekindergarten programs as well as the role higher education can serve in partnering with public schools.

Abstract:Abstract Reading, at its core, is a basic yet critical way to undertake learning and growth. This paper shares a professional learning and development initiative for science educators, which was underpinned by the popularity and premise of the reading group. In moving from simply being a vehicle for targeted discussion, the reading group facilitators sought to support the participants in taking a deeper dive into their practice with the impact ultimately being changes to their personal pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) for science. This small-scale qualitative study was informed by the voices of three science educators at different stages and career trajectories, who participated in interviews. The data revealed that their participation in the reading group informed the development of their personal and collective PCK by (a) creating conditions that encouraged meaningful links to be made between theory and practice, (b) encouraging the adoption of an inquiry stance as a means for engaging purposively with professional knowledge, and (c) initiating a transformation in their contemporary understandings of science and science education. By drawing on the participants’ narratives, this study brings to the fore both the simplicity and depth of complexity that can be achieved through a reading group focused on professional learning and development. The implications of this research are wide reaching as the reading group as a concept can be applied to a variety of contexts and shaped to reach a variety of educational needs.

Abstract:The present study examined outcomes of using culturally responsive shared reading in a group counseling setting to promote academic and social-emotional development with a group of seven Latina third graders. Through conducting a mixed methods case study that included quantitative behavioral observation data and qualitative content analysis, participants demonstrated improvement in academic engagement and social-emotional learning (SEL), including respect for others, effective communication and problem solving, self-management, self-awareness, and self-confidence. Implications for employing shared reading as a culturally responsive counseling intervention are described.

Abstract:In the Philippines, the recent curriculum reform has impelled the attention of various education sectors for teacher professional development (PD). The purpose of this qualitative this study is to assess the impact of a year-long research-based collaborative PD of 30 elementary school science teachers with university science education researchers. The PD activity followed the lesson study model which features collaboration and reflection. Data were obtained from audio and video-taped transcripts and formal interview. The constant comparison method was used to analyze and formulate themes from the data transcripts.Reliability of codes was ensured using the Cohen inter-rater reliability analysis with an acceptable value of 0.734. Results revealthat a change in the teachers’ professional culture was the main impact of study which encompasses collaboration, teachers’ practices focused on student learning, continuous teacher learning and reflective practice. Promoting early literacy through the professional development of preschool teachers

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a professional learning program on the emergent literacy skills of preschool children. Building Blocks for Literacy® is a program consisting of training supported by mentoring designed to teach early childcare providers how to promote the development of early literacy skills. A previous investigation found positive effects of the program on the pre-literacy skills of children in Vermont. The current study extended their work by replicating the training for Head Start teachers (n = 27) in another state. Teachers were divided into three groups. One group received the training and live mentoring; a second group received training and distance mentoring; and a third group of teachers served as controls. The results indicate that children (n = 97) served by teachers who received the training (n = 18) made higher gains on a measure of early literacy skills than those children (n = 36) served by control teachers. The gains made by children in the treatment groups were consistent for teachers who received either live or distance mentoring. Implications for practice are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Research on the impact of place-based education (PBE), in which educational experiences are situated in the local environment (Smith, 2002), consistently suggests academic, social, and affective benefits across demographics. Traditionally, professional development supporting PBE has been designed to support large-scale initiatives. In this study, a bottom-up approach for expanding the reach of place-based art education (PBAE) was implemented with teachers (n=11) from a school district in the southeastern United States through two sequential professional development workshops. We examined the extent to which this minimal intervention impacted teachers’ understanding, buy-in, and creation of PBAE curricula. Results suggest that this organic approach, with teachers positioned as agents of change, can build upon pre-existing teacher interest and equip teachers to expand PBAE into their teaching contexts.

Abstract:In a climate where teachers feel deprofessionalized at the hands of regulations, testing, and politics, it is vital that teachers become empowered both in their own teaching and as agents of change. This physics education research study investigates the Streamline to Mastery professional development program, in which the teachers design professional development opportunities for themselves and for fellow teachers. The research reported here describes the process of teacher professional growth through changes in roles and identities. Videos, emails, and interviews were analyzed to glean insight into practice and participation shifts as these physical science teachers formed a community and engaged in their own classroom research. Implications for the role of PER in teacher professional development and teacher preparation will be discussed.

Abstract:As the pre-kindergarten teacher workforce continues to grow in the United States, the promise of early childhood education depends in large part on in-service professional development. Given mounting evidence that the quality of teacher-child interactions is a fundamental ingredient for young children's learning in classrooms, the challenge becomes how to develop and test models of teacher education that facilitate teachers' development of these instructional interaction skills. In this paper, we describe how an innovative program, MyTeachingPartner (MTP), addresses the challenge of providing an enduring, classroom-focused, and scalable professional development experience that focuses on facilitating high quality teacher-child interactions. Feasibility and usability results from two years of MTP implementation suggest high levels of teacher engagement, buy-in and satisfaction, as well as some challenges related to sustaining these levels over time. Implications for scalable implementation of interaction-focused professional development in early childhood are discussed.

Abstract:As a student working towards a Master's Degree in ESL, I often ponder the career choices that will be available to me upon completion of the program. Having made the commitment to professional development implicit in my decision to return to university, I hope to find a postion in an EFL setting that will nurture my desire for continued growth as a teacher. But how realistic is that prospect? My experience has shown me that many of the private language schools abroad are indifferent to teacher development; in fact, they often hire teachers with no qualifications. Profit, rather than the quality of teaching guides their decision-making. As long as their students continue to accept unqualified (and thus low-paid) teachers, they will have no motivation to hire professionals who will demand higher salaries. The Promise of Teacher Inquiry and Reflection: Early Childhood Teachers as Change Agents

Abstract:In this article, a preschool teacher and an early childhood teacher educator describe and analyze their work co-creating and co-facilitating an early childhood inquiry group over seven years. The group consisted of veteran lead teachers, assistant teachers, instructional coaches, and an outside teacher educator at an urban, public preschool in San Francisco, California. Using the framework of narrative inquiry and portraiture, the article tells the story of the group’s formation, its structure, and its benefits for the participants’ personal and professional growth. The authors argue that an inquiry group is a highly viable, home-grown form of professional growth that relies on the group as a forum for self-study and reflection. The inquiry group provided the teachers with an increased understanding of child development and instructional strategies, a trusting public forum for sharing and validating their inquiry and teaching, and a communal opportunity to make visible the voices of teachers, children, and families.

Abstract:Effective professional development (PD) interventions that promote high quality teacher-child interactions are important mechanisms to support social-emotional and cognitive development in early childhood. One PD intervention that has shown to be effective is MyTeachingPartner (MTP); however, previous research has suggested that both teacher and contextual factors may moderate the effectiveness of PD interventions like MTP. In the current study, we used a self-determination theoretical (SDT) framework to identify subgroups of teachers (N = 401) through latent class analysis based on the fulfillment of their three basic needs: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. We found three latent classes of teachers: 1) Unconfident and Unsupported; 2) Unconfident but Supported; 3) Confident and Supported. We tested the effect of MTP, latent class membership, and the MTP by latent class interaction on the quality of teacher emotional and instructional support to identify which teachers benefitted most from the MTP intervention. While MTP benefitted teachers on emotional support similarly across classes, MTP was most effective for instructional support for teachers from the Confident and Supported class. As these were the only teachers who had all their basic needs met our results suggest teacher and contextual factors in concert are important in optimizing the effectiveness of PD.
