Abstract:Optical remote sensing is applied in the identification, classification, and quantification of weathered oil spills. The automatic detection of oil spills through optical imaging is yet a challenge because various oils under different sunglint reflections have complex optical image characteristics. Generally, there are two types of weathered oil spills, namely, non-emulsified oil slicks (NEOS) and oil emulsions (OE), which show different image characteristics under various sunglint reflections. The Coastal Zone Imager (CZI) onboard China’s HaiYang-1C/D (HY-1C/D) satellites can provide multispectral images with high spatial resolution and wide coverage for operational monitoring of oil spills. In this study, we applied an adaptive dynamic detector incorporating a built-in oil–water mixture distribution classifier, specifically for different sunglint reflections, to automatically extract oil spills from CZI images. The spatial heterogeneity distribution of various oil spills could be quantified using a novel separability index, and then, the optimal oil–water segmentation proportion and scale could be obtained. Oil spills are discriminated and extracted under different sunglint reflections, with the variable scale detector implemented by tiling sliding windows of classifiers on detection images, from which respective volumes are derived with lower uncertainties. This approach also uses spatial and spectral ancillary information to improve weathered oil extraction confidence. The results show stable variable-scale extraction accuracies of approximately 90% and 80% for NEOS and EO, respectively. Therefore, the spatio–spectral–distribution comprehensive feature provides a new approach for the automatic extraction of oil spills from optical remote sensing images.

Abstract:Marine oil spills can cause severe damage to the marine environment and biological resources. Using satellite remote sensing technology is one of the best ways to monitor the sea surface in near real-time to obtain oil spill information. The existing methods in the literature either use deep convolutional neural networks in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images to directly identify oil spills or use traditional methods based on artificial features sequentially to distinguish oil spills from sea surface. However, both approaches currently only use image information and ignore some valuable auxiliary information, such as marine weather conditions, distances from oil spill candidates to oil spill sources, etc. In this study, we proposed a novel method to help detect marine oil spills by constructing a multi-source knowledge graph, which was the first one specifically designed for oil spill detection in the remote sensing field. Our method can rationally organize and utilize various oil spill-related information obtained from multiple data sources, such as remote sensing images, vectors, texts, and atmosphere-ocean model data, which can be stored in a graph database for user-friendly query and management. In order to identify oil spills more effectively, we also proposed 13 new dark spot features and then used a feature selection technique to create a feature subset that was favorable to oil spill detection. Furthermore, we proposed a knowledge graph-based oil spill reasoning method that combines rule inference and graph neural network technology, which pre-inferred and eliminated most non-oil spills using statistical rules to alleviate the problem of imbalanced data categories (oil slick and non-oil slick). Entity recognition is ultimately performed on the remaining oil spill candidates using a graph neural network algorithm. To verify the effectiveness of our knowledge graph approach, we collected 35 large SAR images to construct a new dataset, for which the training set contained 110 oil slicks and 66264 non-oil slicks from 18 SAR images, the validation set contained 35 oil slicks and 69005 non-oil slicks from 10 SAR images, and the testing set contained 36 oil slicks and 36281 non-oil slicks from the remaining 7 SAR images. The results showed that some traditional oil spill detection methods and deep learning models failed when the dataset suffered a severe imbalance, while our proposed method identified oil spills with a sensitivity of 0.8428, specificity of 0.9985, and precision of 0.2781 under those same conditions. The knowledge graph method we proposed using multi-source data can not only help solve the problem of information island in oil spill detection, but serve as a guide for construction of remote sensing knowledge graphs in many other applications as well. Abstract:Monitoring oil drift by integrating multi-source satellite imagery has been a relatively underexplored practice due to the limited time-sampling of datasets. However, this limitation has been mitigated by the emergence of new satellite constellations equipped with both Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical sensors. In this manuscript, we take advantage of multi-temporal and multi-source satellite imagery, incorporating SAR (Sentinel-1 and ICEYE-X) and optical data (Sentinel-2/3 and Landsat-8/9), to provide insights into the spatio-temporal variations of oil spills. We also analyze the impact of met–ocean conditions on oil drift, focusing on two specific scenarios: marine floating oil slicks off the coast of Qatar and oil spills resulting from a shipwreck off the coast of Mauritius. By overlaying oils detected from various sources, we observe their short-term and long-term evolution. Our analysis highlights the finding that changes in oil structure and size are influenced by strong surface winds, while surface currents predominantly affect the spread of oil spills. Moreover, to detect oil slicks across different datasets, we propose an innovative unsupervised algorithm that combines a Bayesian approach used to detect oil and look-alike objects with an oil contours approach distinguishing oil from look-alikes. This algorithm can be applied to both SAR and optical data, and the results demonstrate its ability to accurately identify oil slicks, even in the presence of oil look-alikes and under varying met–ocean conditions.

Abstract:Marine oil spills can cause serious damage to marine ecosystems and biological species, and the pollution is difficult to repair in the short term. Accurate oil type identification and oil thickness quantification are of great significance for marine oil spill emergency response and damage assessment. In recent years, hyperspectral remote sensing technology has become an effective means to monitor marine oil spills. The spectral and spatial features of oil spill images at different levels are different. To accurately identify oil spill types and quantify oil film thickness, and perform better extraction of spectral and spatial features, a multilevel spatial and spectral feature extraction network is proposed in this study. First, the graph convolutional neural network and graph attentional neural network models were used to extract spectral and spatial features in non-Euclidean space, respectively, and then the designed modules based on 2D expansion convolution, depth convolution, and point convolution were applied to extract feature information in Euclidean space; after that, a multilevel feature fusion method was developed to fuse the obtained spatial and spectral features in Euclidean space in a complementary way to obtain multilevel features. Finally, the multilevel features were fused at the feature level to obtain the oil spill information. The experimental results show that compared with CGCNN, SSRN, and A2S2KResNet algorithms, the accuracy of oil type identification and oil film thickness classification of the proposed method in this paper is improved by 12.82%, 0.06%, and 0.08% and 2.23%, 0.69%, and 0.47%, respectively, which proves that the method in this paper can effectively extract oil spill information and identify different oil spill types and different oil film thicknesses.

Abstract:With increasing demand and consumption of crude oils,oil spill accidents during production and transportation have become increasingly serious.Precisely determining the sources of spilled oils can provide scientific evidence for the investigation and handling of oil spill accidents.Based on enormous research data published at home and abroad,this paper reviews organic geochemical methods and indices which characterize the composition and variation of spilled oils during the whole spilling process from the original source to the final samples.The study revealed that some organic geochemical theories can reliably be used in the process of identifying spilled oil sources.In combination with the developing trend of organic geochemistry,it is advanced in this paper that quantification of oil fingerprints on a molecular level(including digitalization of oil fingerprints,molecular diagnostic indicators,quantitative identification of mixed sources and multivariate statistical analysis of analytical results,etc.) is a developing trend of future study on the identification of oil spill sources.

Abstract:The types of marine oil spill pollution are closely related to source tracing and pollution disposal, which is an important basis for oil spill pollution punishment. The types of marine oil spill pollution generally include different types of oil products as well as crude oil and its emulsions in different states. This paper designed and implemented two outdoor oil spill simulation experiments, obtained the hyperspectral and thermal infrared remote sensing data of different oil spill pollution types, constructed a hyperspectral recognition algorithm of oil spill pollution type based on classical machine learning, ensemble learning and deep learning models, and explored to improve the identification ability of hyperspectral oil spill pollution type by adding thermal infrared features. The research shows that hyperspectral combined with thermal infrared remote sensing can effectively improve the recognition accuracy of different oils, but thermal infrared remote sensing cannot be used to distinguish crude oil and high concentration water-in-oil emulsion. On this basis, the recognition ability of hyperspectral combined with thermal infrared for different oil film thicknesses is also discussed. The combination of hyperspectral and thermal infrared remote sensing can provide important technical support for emergency response to maritime emergencies and oil spill monitoring business of relevant departments.

A Multitemporal Change Detection Solution to Oil Spill Monitoring.

Abstract:This paper develops a novel oil spill detection approach by using the multitemporal optical remote sensing images. Differently from the traditional oil spill detection methods that mainly carried out on a monotemporal image, the proposed approach opens a new perspective to solve the considered oil spill detection problem in a multitemporal domain by investigating the potential capability of change detection (CD) techniques. A coarse to fine multitemporal change analysis is defined to analyze the spectral-temporal variation of change targets that present in the oil spill scenario. Suspected oil spills and non-relevant changes are identified and discriminated according to a multiple-change detection in the proposed technique. The proposed approach provides a quick, yet effective oil spill detection solution in an unsupervised way, which is valuable and important in practical oil spill detection applications. Experimental results obtained on real HJ-1 satellite images presenting the oil spill event in northern Gulf of Mexico in 2010 confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Oil spills cause serious harm to aquatic ecosystems, so rapid and accurate monitoring is needed to take timely action. Traditional methods usually use satellite remote sensing, buoy sensors, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Satellite remote sensing is affected by resolution, transit time, and weather conditions, so it is impossible to monitor oil spills in small-scale and inclement weather conditions continuously and accurately. Buoy monitoring is a point-based measurement, unable to obtain the oil spill distribution, UAVs are limited by endurance time, and cannot conduct long-term monitoring. Here shore-based hyperspectral scanning image technology is proposed, which combines hyperspectral image and remote sensing technology with high resolution and spectral extraction capabilities. This method provides long-term, high-frequency, and real-time monitoring, forecasting, and early warning. A shore-based hyperspectral imaging device was developed to complete the actual field data acquisition and model verification in Three Gorges of China. The results show the precision of oil spill recognition is 84%, and the oil spill recall rate is 89% using the developed weighted CatBoost oil spill classification. The water recognition is close to 100%. The recall rate is also near 100%. The average relative error of oil spill thickness based on the multi-scale continuous wavelet transform model is 23.1%, which shows that the method is effective and can be extended in the oil-spill monitoring for ports, factories, and pipelines.

Abstract:Marine oil spills and emulsions are highly detrimental to the ecological environment and human health. Optical and thermal infrared remote sensing technologies provide important approaches for marine oil-spill detection, but accurate cross-spatiotemporal remote sensing detection in complex scenarios is still challenging. In this article, optical and thermal infrared observation experiments on oil spills and emulsions were designed and conducted to analyze the optical and thermal response characteristics and the technical feasibility of remote sensing detection. Then, a detection model coupling the optical and thermal response characteristics is proposed to break through the bottleneck of oil-spill detection across time and space in complex scenes, which can enhance the diversity of samples by exploiting the 3-D spatial-spectral feature (SSF) generation adversarial expansion module constrained by the sun glint intensity index (SGII). Meanwhile, based on the thermal infrared super-resolution enhancement module guided by texture features, the thermal infrared spatial geometric features of oil spills are improved, and the model's ability to resist cloud and fog interference is enhanced. Besides, under the guidance of the optical feature guidance (OFG) module, the SSF information can be extracted based on the SSF convolution deep belief network (SSF-CDBN) to realize the oil-spill remote sensing migration detection both temporally and spatially. The results show that the model can accurately detect oil spills and emulsion type, the overall accuracy (OA) and Kappa are larger than 84.46% and 0.758 in ideal scenarios, 80.11% and 0.745 in complex scenarios, which is expected to provide new technical support for oil-spill accidents.

Abstract:The existing leak detection methods of submarine oil pipelines mainly rely on compositing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite images to detect oil spills on the sea surface or installing underwater cameras to monitor the joints of submarine pipelines manually. The former is poor in timeliness and high in cost, while the latter is inflexible. Aiming at this, this letter studies the underwater image processing method of intelligent oil spill recognition using an underwater camera. Nevertheless, this method is currently faced with challenges, such as poor quality of datasets, unclear goals, and scarce quantity. The U-Net++ algorithm can theoretically reduce the dependence on the number of datasets. However, the pixel feature extraction method used by U-Net++ is difficult to achieve the segmentation effect of oil spill images, so a new network architecture suitable superpixel with texture (SSWT)-UNet++ based on texture superpixel is proposed. In SSWT-UNet++, the input is the oil spill image with texture superpixel division, and the output was changed to the middle layer. In addition, the resolution of each layer and the ratio of up/downsampling were adjusted. This algorithm completes the classification of oil spill texture superpixels and finally realizes oil spill detection according to the minimum bounding rectangle of the classification result of the oil spill region. Experimental verification shows that the final detection effect of the proposed algorithm is higher than that of other algorithms with an average precision (AP) of 0.985.

Abstract:In recent years, the number of marine oil spill accidents has been increasing, which is very harmful. It is urgent to develop an efficient monitoring technology for marine oil spills. This paper summarizes the types of satellite remote sensing that can detect marine oil spills. The advantages and disadvantages of marine oil spill monitoring based on medium resolution MODIS data, spaceborne infrared data, hyperspectral data, multi-source multi-temporal multispectral data, and satellite radar data, and offshore oil spill monitoring systems based on remote sensing data and their research progress are described. The shortage of marine oil spill monitoring is also analyzed. Finally, the prospect is put forward in order to provide technical reference for related research.

Abstract:Oil spill monitoring in optical remote sensing (RS) images is a challenging task due to the complexity of target discrimination in an oil spill scenario. Differently from traditional oil spill detection methods that are mainly carried out in a monotemporal image, in this letter, a novel solution is given in a multitemporal domain by investigating potential capability of change detection (CD) techniques, and it mainly contributes to an unsupervised, semiautomatic, and efficient approach. It opens a new perspective for solving an oil spill detection problem. In particular, a coarse-to-fine multitemporal change analysis procedure is designed to investigate the spectral–temporal variation of change targets present in the scenario. Changes relevant and irrelevant to suspected oil spills are identified and discriminated according to a binary and a multiple CD process, respectively. Abstract:Oil spills have caused serious harm to the marine environment. Remote sensing technology is one of the important tools for marine environment monitoring. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has become an important technology for detecting marine pollution. Identifying dark spots is essential for oil spill detection based on SAR images. Dark spots' detection can be achieved using image segmentation techniques. However, natural phenomena, such as waves and currents, can also cause dark spots, resulting in consistently uneven intensity, high noise, and blurred boundaries in oil spill images. In addition, existing oil spill detection models often perform well for large targets but have poor detection accuracy for small targets. To solve the above problems, the oil spill contextual and boundary-supervised detection network (CBD-Net) is proposed to extract refined oil spill regions by fusing multiscale features. To improve the internal consistency of oil spill regions, the spatial and channel squeeze excitation (scSE) block is introduced. In CBD-Net, boundary details are enhanced with optimized edge supervision. In addition, a manually labeled dataset is proposed, Deep-SAR Oil Spill (SOS) dataset, aiming to solve the problem of insufficient existing oil spill detection dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that CBD-Net outperforms other comparative models and is able to extract robust and accurate oil spill regions from complex SAR images. The highest mIoU of 83.42% and the highest F1 score of 87.87% were achieved on the SOS dataset. The CBD-Net model proposed in this article can play a guiding role in the marine oil spill decision support system.

Remote sensing techniques for oil spill monitoring in offshore oil and gas exploration and exploitation activities: Case study in Bohai Bay

Abstract:Marine oil spill pollution directly damages the marine environment and arouses international dispute.The space borne remote sensing monitoring techniques have advantages of wide area surveillance,multi-temporal resolution,prompt acquisition,and high precision.It has become one of the key marine oil pollution monitoring techniques.This paper takes the oil pollution accident occurred in March 2006 in Bohai Bay as an example.The Envisat ASAR data is used to determine the pollution origin and delineate the polluted marine area.The polluted area is precisely calculated based on the image interpretation and the analysis of the Envisat ASAR images collected on March 23rd,2006.The total polluted marine area is more than 400 km2.This study shows that SAR remote sensing and GIS are important techniques to secure the environment issue during the marine oil exploration and exploitation.It is crucial to set up an emergency response system for the marine oil pollution and environment monitoring.

The Research on Water Information Extraction Based on Multisource Remote Sensing Data

Abstract:Satellite remote sensing technology has been widely used to extract water-body information. However,nowadays a single kind of remotely sensed data is usually used to extract water-body information,but the advantage of the combination of multi-source datum information is ignored. Consequently,the accuracy of water information extraction is often limited to the climate or spatial resolution. In this paper,a new method based on multi-scale and multi-platform remotely sensed data is explored to extract water-body information. The main research includes several steps as follows: first,decision tree classification algorithms based on relationships between spectrum are used to extract the accurate size of water-body on Landsat ETM + image due to its high spatial resolution; second,the method of threshold value is used to extract water-body information on Radarsat SAR image crudely,then more accurate water-body information is obtained by eliminating the shadow influence combined with DEM; finally,the flood extent is obtained by using differential technique of the water-body information extracted from the Landsat ETM + image before flood disaster and Radarsat SAR image during flood disaster. The new method explored in this paper can provide information support for flood disaster monitoring and evaluation.

Characterizing oil spills using deep learning and spectral-spatial-geometrical features of HY-1C/D CZI images

Abstract:Marine oil spills cause pollution to the environment, where timely information on the oil characteristics (i.e., oil types, concentration, thickness) is essential for spill response and post-spill assessment. Existing remote sensing models (including deep-learning or DL) have been applied to both synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical remote sensing images, which are primarily for presence/absence detection. Here, we propose a framework to take advantage of data richness (i.e., multi-band observations under different viewing conditions) of optical sensors to characterize oil spills beyond presence/absence detection. The framework includes a 2-step DL model (F1-score ∼ 0.88) to account for the spectral-spatial-geometrical features of optical images to achieve the presence/absence detection, and a spectral model to characterize oil type and estimate oil quantity. The framework led to a relatively comprehensive "ground truth" dataset ( N = 105 oil spill cases with 1616 oil features of each being at least 3 × 3 pixels) including all possible scenarios to account for various oil types and observing conditions, which can be used in the future for model development. Application of the framework to >25,000 HY-1C/D CZI images between December 2018 and April 2023 revealed substantial oil spills in the marginal seas off China, whose spatial distributions and oil characteristics (e.g., normalized concentration, thickness, and volume) were all quantified. The DL model also appears to be applicable to other Sentinel-1 SAR as well as to other optical sensors such as Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI). The use of multi-sensor data with the proposed approach over an oil spill event in the Gulf of Mexico shows improved temporal coverage as well as better knowledge on where most of the spilled oil can be found.

Abstract:Oil fingerprints have been a powerful tool widely used for determining the source of spilled oil. In most cases, this tool works well. However, it is usually difficult to identify the source if the oil spill accident occurs during offshore petroleum exploration due to the highly similar physiochemical characteristics of suspected oils from the same drilling platform. In this report, a case study from the waters of the South China Sea is presented, and multidimensional scaling analysis (MDS) is introduced to demonstrate how oil fingerprints can be combined with mathematical methods to identify the source of spilled oil from highly similar suspected sources. The results suggest that the MDS calculation based on oil fingerprints and subsequently integrated with specific biomarkers in spilled oils is the most effective method with a great potential for determining the source in terms of highly similar suspected oils.
Monitoring Marine Oil Spills in Hyperspectral and Multispectral Remote Sensing Data by the Spectral Gene Extraction (SGE) Method

Abstract:Oil spill incidents threaten the marine ecological environment. Detecting sea surface oil slicks by remote sensing images provides support for the efficient treatment of oil spills. This is important for sustainable marine development. However, traditional methods based on field analysis are time-consuming. Spectral indices lack applicability. In addition, traditional machine learning methods strictly rely on training and testing samples which are in short supply in oil spill images. Inspired by the spectral DNA encoding method, a spectral gene extraction (SGE) method was proposed to detect oil spills in hyperspectral images (HSI) and multispectral images (MSI). The SGE method contained a parameter and two strategies. The parameter of elimination was designed based on the population genetic frequency. It was used to control the number of spectral genes. The spectral gene extraction strategies, named largest in-class similarity (LIS) strategy and largest inter-class difference (LID) strategy, were proposed to mine the spectral genes by oil spill samples. The oil spills would be determined by calculating the similarity of the extracted spectral genes to the DNA encoded images. In this research, the SGE method was validated by two AVIRIS images of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, one MODIS image of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and one Landsat 8 image of a Persian Gulf oil spill. The oil spills in different remote sensing images could be detected accurately by the proposed method in a small set of samples. Experimental results indicated that the proposed method was suitable for detecting marine oil spills in AVIRIS, MODIS, and Landsat 8 images. In addition, the SGE method with the LIS strategy was more suitable for detecting oil spills in HSI. Its proper elimination rates were 0.8~1.0. The SGE method with the LID strategy was more suitable for detecting oil spills in MSI. Its proper elimination rates were 0.5~0.7.

Abstract:Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) plays an irreplaceable role in the monitoring of marine oil spills. However, due to the limitation of its imaging characteristics, it is difficult to use traditional image processing methods to effectively extract oil spill information from SAR images with coherent speckle noise. In this paper, the convolutional neural network AlexNet model is used to extract the oil spill information from SAR images by taking advantage of its features of local connection, weight sharing, and learning for image representation. The existing remote sensing images of the oil spills in recent years in China are used to build a dataset. These images are enhanced by translation and flip of the dataset, and so on and then sent to the established deep convolutional neural network for training. The prediction model is obtained through optimization methods such as Adam. During the prediction, the predicted image is cut into several blocks, and the error information is removed by corrosion expansion and Gaussian filtering after the image is spliced again. Experiments based on actual oil spill SAR datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the modified AlexNet model compared with other approaches.

Abstract:Oil spill accidents have gradually increased due to the continuous development of marine transportation and petroleum processing industries. Monitoring and managing marine oil spills present important economic, social, and practical implications in preventing offshore oil pollution and maintaining ecological balance. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has become a suitable carrier for low-altitude oil spill detection because of their fast deployment and low cost. Thermal infrared remote sensing images are used as the research object in this study. A method around histogram of gradient (HOG) features combined with a support vector machine (SVM) is proposed for identifying oil spills at sea to improve the accuracy of offshore low-altitude oil spill recognition and realize all-weather monitoring of offshore oil spills in offshore waters. Steps for extracting HOG features and basic principles of the SVM classification are first investigated. Image preprocessing is then performed on collected thermal infrared image data to produce samples. HOG features of samples are extracted, and the radial basis function is selected as the kernel function for training the SVM classifier. HOG features of the infrared image to be tested are calculated and then sent to the classifier for identifying the oil spills. In addition, the proposed method is compared with the back propagation(BP) neural network method and local binary pattern (LBP) combined with the SVM classification method for analysis. The results show that the oil film recognition method based on the HOG feature and SVM has a recognition accuracy of 91.3% in the environment of small infrared oil film samples, which is significantly better than the BP and LBP-SVM recognition methods, and obtains a shorter training time. The method proposed in this study has obvious advantages in terms of small sample size and processing efficiency, can meet the requirements of all-weather inspection of oil film pollutants by UAV in offshore port areas, and has great application potential in the field of maritime supervision informatization in the future.
