Abstract:This thesis is concerned with the theory and the phenomenology of rapidity gap processes. We perform perturbative calculations of energy flow observables in jet-gap-jet processes, which consist of resummed primary emission calculations specific to the soft gluon geometry at HERA and an estimate of non-global (secondary emission) effects in clustered energy flow observables. The resulting predictions agree well with H1 data. We also study hard diffraction and use a factorised model, with a Monte Carlo event generator, to make detailed predictions for gap-jet-gap events at the Tevatron. We find that we can describe the data in a natural way by using HERA parton densities and a gap surivial factor consistent with theoretical estimates.

Abstract:We discuss an application of dynamical multi-parton interaction model, tuned to measurements of underlying event topology, for a description of destroying rapidity gaps in the jet-gap-jet processes at the LHC. We concentrate on the dynamical origin of the mechanism of destroying the rapidity gap. The cross section for jet-gap-jet is calculated within LL BFKL approximation. We discuss the topology of final states without and with the MPI effects. We discuss some examples of selected kinematical situations (fixed jet rapidities and transverse momenta) as distributions averaged over the dynamics of the jet-gap-jet scattering. The color-singlet ladder exchange amplitude for the partonic subprocess is implemented into the \textsc{Pythia 8} generator, which is then used for hadronisation and for the simulation of the MPI effects. Several differential distributions are shown and discussed. We present the ratio of cross section calculated with and without MPI effects as a function of rapidity gap in between the jets.

Abstract:We present the first study of rapidity gaps in e+eannihilations, using 2’ decays collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. Our measured rapidity gap spectra fall exponentially with . increasing gap size over five decades, and we observe no anomalous class of events containing large gaps. This supports the interpretation of the large-gap events measured in pH and ep collisions in terms of exchange of color-singlet objects. The presence of heavy flavors or additional jets does not affect these conclusions. Since the initial observation of hadronic jets rapidity has been used to characterize the momentum of particles in jets in a frame-invariant manner. The rapidity distribution has been studied in e+eannihilation, ep and hadron-hadron collisions, and fixed-target experiments, and is a characteristic of strong interactions that is well described by perturbative QCD combined with iterative models of jet fragmentation [l]. Hard scattering of quarks or gluons can be modeled by color fields between the outgoing partons that fragment into the observed final-state particles, typically populating the whole rapidity range. Recently, exchange of color-singlet objects in hard diffractive hadron-hadron scattering processes characterized by events containing large gaps in the particle rapidity spectrum has been discussed [2]. Subsequent studies of pp collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider found that roughly 1% of events comprising at least two hightransverse-energy (ET) jets contain a large rapidity region between the two highest-& jets with no particle activity [3, 4, 51. Th ese events have been interpreted in terms of color-singlet exchange between the interacting partons. Exchange of electroweak bosons is estimated to contribute only a small fraction of the observed rate of gap events and a model incorporating pomeron exchange is in agreement with the data [4, 51. Large rapidity gaps have also been observed in roughly 10% of all photoproduced dijet events in deep-inelastic scattering at the HERA ep collider [6, 71 and have also been interpreted in terms of color-singlet exchange. Models involving either vector meson dominance of the exchanged virtual photon or hard diffractive scattering via pomerons describe the data [6, 71. Color exchange processes account successfully for the properties of the majority of dijet events and may give rise to large rapidity gaps due to random fluctuations. In both the ep and pp cases the interpretation of rapidity-gap events in terms of color-singlet exchange depends upon an understanding of this color-exchange background. In the pp experiments this was estimated by extrapolation of fits to the particle multiplicity distribution in rapidity intervals into the zero-particle, or rapidity gap, region [4,5]. In

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the survival probability for exclusive central diffractive production of a colorless small size system at the LHC. This process has a clear signature of two large rapidity gaps. Using the eikonal approach for the description of soft interactions, we predict the value of the survival probability to be about 5~6% for single channel models, while for a two channel model the survival probability is about 3%. The dependence of the survival probability factor (damping factor) on the transverse momenta of the recoiled protons is discussed, and we suggest it be measured at the Tevatron so as to minimize the possible ambiguity in the calculation of survival probability at the LHC.

Abstract:We study the semi-inclusive limit of the deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan (DY) processes in soft collinear effective theory. In this regime so-called threshold logarithms must be resummed to render perturbation theory well behaved. Part of this resummation occurs via the Dokshitzer, Gribov, Lipatov, Altarelli, Parisi (DGLAP) equation, which at threshold contains a large logarithm that calls into question the convergence of the anomalous dimension. We demonstrate here that the problematic logarithm is related to rapidity divergences, and by introducing a rapidity regulator can be tamed. We show that resumming the rapidity logarithms allows us to reproduce the standard DGLAP running at threshold as long as a set of potentially large nonperturbative logarithms are absorbed into the definition of the parton distribution function (PDF). These terms could, in turn, explain the steep falloff of the PDF in the end point. We then go on to show that the resummation of rapidity divergences does not change the standard threshold resummation in DY, nor do our results depend on the rapidity regulator we choose to use.

Abstract:We calculate the probability for rapidity gaps in the parton cascade for different approximations within the perturbative QCD and compare the results with recent measurements. The aim is to find out whether the dual connection between the parton and hadron final states -- observed so far in various inclusive measurements -- holds as well for the extreme kinematic configurations with colour sources separated by large rapidity gaps. A description of the data is possible indeed choosing the parameters of the cascade in the range suggested by recent analyses of the energy spectra (the $k_\perp$ cutoff $Q_0~\gsim$ QCD scale $\Lambda\sim 250$ MeV).

Abstract:The relation between event rapidity gap fluctuation and rapidity correlations is derived. It is shown that the new and interesting parts included in rapidity gap analysis are the generalized two-particle rapidity-correlation moments. The physical meanings of these moments for specific two particles and moment orders are clarified.

Abstract:Clan structure analysis in rapidity intervals is generalized from negative binomial multiplicity distribution to the wide class of compound Poisson distributions. The link of generalized clan structure analysis with correlation functions is also established. These theoretical results are then applied to minimum bias events and evidentiate new interesting features, which can be inspiring and useful in order to discuss data on rapidity gap probability at TEVATRON and HERA.

Abstract:The exchange of electroweak gauginos in the $t-$ or $u-$channel allows squark pair production at hadron colliders without color exchange between the squarks. This can give rise to events where little or no energy is deposited in the detector between the squark decay products. We discuss the potential for detection of such rapidity gap events at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We present an analysis with full event simulation using PYTHIA as well as Herwig++, but without detector simulation. We analyze the transverse energy deposited between the jets from squark decay, as well as the probability of finding a third jet in between the two hardest jets. For the mSUGRA benchmark point SPS1a we find statistically significant evidence for a color singlet exchange contribution.

Abstract:An excess of events with a rapidity gap between jets, over what would be expected from non-diffractive processes, has been observed at HERA. A process based on a perturbative QCD calculation of colour singlet exchange has been added to HERWIG. With this addition, HERWIG is able to describe the number of events with a gap between jets over the number without a gap. This gap fraction is predicted to rise at large rapidity intervals between jets which would only be visible if the detector coverage were increased.

Abstract:Rare events in the first-passage distributions of jump processes are capable of triggering anomalous reactions or series of events. Estimating their probability is particularly important when the jump probabilities have broad-tailed distributions, and rare events are therefore not so rare. We formulate a general approach for estimating the contribution of fast rare events to the exit probabilities in the presence of fat tailed distributions. Using this approach, we study three jump processes that are used to model a wide class of phenomena ranging from biology to transport in disordered systems, ecology and finance: discrete time random-walks, Lévy walks and the Lévy-Lorentz gas. We determine the exact form of the scaling function for the probability distribution of fast rare events, in which the jump process exits from an interval in a very short time at a large distance opposite to the starting point. In particular, we show that events occurring on time scales orders of magnitude smaller than the typical time scale of the process can make a significant contribution to the exit probability. Our results are confirmed by extensive numerical simulations.

Abstract:The requirement of a large pseudo-rapidity gap to select diffractive DIS events at HERA restricts the kinematically accessible region of phase space for a significant range of Q2, β and xp. Consequences of this include a breakdown of xp-factorization in large rapidity gap diffractive samples and an enhancement in the relative contribution of quark-antiquark-gluon processes over dijet processes in the diffractive DIS sample.

Abstract:I examine the phenomenology of particle multiplicity distributions, with special emphasis on the low multiplicities that are a background in the study of rapidity gaps. In particular, I analyze the multiplicity distribution in a rapidity interval between two jets, using the HERWIG QCD simulation with some necessary modifications. The distribution is not of the negative binomial form, and displays an anomalous enhancement at zero multiplicity. Some useful mathematical tools for working with multiplicity distributions are presented. It is demonstrated that ignoring particles with pt<0.2 has theoretical advantages, in addition to being convenient experimentally.

Abstract:We study an interacting random walk system on Z where at time 0 there is an active particle at 0 and one inactive particle on each site $n \ge 1$. Particles become active when hit by another active particle. Once activated, the particle starting at n performs an asymmetric, translation invariant, nearest neighbor random walk with left jump probability $l_n$. We give conditions for global survival, local survival and infinite activation both in the case where all particles are immortal and in the case where particles have geometrically distributed lifespan (with parameter depending on the starting location of the particle). More precisely, once activated, the particle at n survives at each step with probability $p_n \in [0, 1]$. In particular, in the immortal case, we prove a 0-1 law for the probability of local survival when all particles drift to the right. Besides that, we give sufficient conditions for local survival or local extinction when all particles drift to the left. In the mortal case, we provide sufficient conditions for global survival, local survival and local extinction (which apply to the immortal case with mixed drifts as well). Analysis of explicit examples is provided: we describe completely the phase diagram in the cases $1/2-l_n \sim \pm 1/n^\alpha$, $p_n = 1$ and $1_n-1/2 \sim \pm 1/n^\alpha$, $1-p_n \sim 1/n^\beta$ (where $\alpha,\beta > 0$).

Abstract:We discuss the process of colour-singlet parton-parton scattering, which in hadron-hadron collision can lead to production of jet events, where a rapidity gap between the jets is present. The dynamics of the process is calculated within LL BFKL approximation. Using Pythia MC generator, hadronic shapes of jet-gap-jet events are studied, in particular the distributions of the rapidity gap size resulting from the jet formation processes. Using Pythia's modelling of multiple parton interactions, the rescattering effects are simulated. It is shown how these effects influence the gap size distributions. The kinematic dependence of the gap survival probability is discussed.
