Abstract:String theory is a candidate theory in particle physics for reconciling quantum mechanics and general relativity, i.e. quantum gravity. Moreover, it’s also a candidate of TOE (“theory of everything”), describing all the known fundamental forces and matters in our universe in a mathematically complete system. In conventional theories, elementary particles are mathematical points, whereas, the fundamental objects in string theory are 1-dimensional oscillating lines or loops.

Abstract:These lectures discuss some of the general issues in developing a phenomenology for Superstring Theory/M Theory. The focus is on the question: how might one obtain robust, generic predictions. For example, does the theory predict low energy supersymmetry breaking? In the course of these explorations, basics of supersymmetry and supersymmetry breaking, string moduli, cosmological issues, and other questions are addressed. The notion of approximate moduli and their possible role plays a central role in the discussion.

Abstract:While M- and F-theory compactifications describe a much larger class of vacua than perturbative string compactifications, they typically need singularities to generate non-abelian gauge fields and charged matter. The physical explanation involves M2-branes wrapped on vanishing cycles. Here we seek an alternative explanation that could address outstanding issues such as the description of nilpotent branches, stability walls, frozen singularities and so forth. To this end we use a model in which the three-form is related to the Chern-Simons form of a bundle. The model has a one-form non-abelian gauge symmetry which normally eliminates all the degrees of freedom associated to the bundle. However by restricting the transformations to preserve the bundle along the vanishing cycles, we may get new degrees of freedom associated to singularities, without appealing to wrapped M2-branes. The analysis can be simplified by gauge-fixing the one-form symmetry using higher-dimensional instanton equations. We explain how this mechanism leads to the natural emergence of phenomena such as enhanced ADE gauge symmetries, nilpotent branches, charged matter fields and their holomorphic couplings.

Abstract:I present a point of view about what M Theory is and how it is related to the real world, which departs in certain crucial respects from conventional wisdom. I argue against the possibility of a background independent formulation of the theory, or of a Poincare invariant, Supersymmetry violating vacuum state. A fundamental assumption is black hole dominance of high energy physics. Much of this paper is a compilation of things I have said elsewhere. I review a crude argument for the critical exponent connecting the gravitino mass and the cosmological constant, and propose a framework for finding a quantum theory of de Sitter space.

Abstract:In the Berkooz-Douglas matrix model of M theory in the presence of longitudinal $M5$-brane, we investigate the effective dynamics of the system by considering the longitudinal $M5$-brane as the background and the spherical $M5$-brane related with the other space dimensions as the probe brane. Due to there exists the background field strength provided by the source of the longitudinal $M5$-brane, an open membrane should be ended on the spherical $M5$-brane based on the topological reason. The formation of the bound brane configuration for the open membrane ending on the 5-branes in the background of longitudinal 5-brane can be used to model the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The description of the excitations of the quantum Hall soliton brane configuration is established by investigating the fluctuations of $D0$-branes living on the bound brane around their classical solution derived by the transformations of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the open membrane. We find that this effective field theory for the fluctuations is an SO(4) non-commutative Chern-Simons field theory. The matrix regularized version of this effective field theory is given in order to allow the finite $D0$-branes to live on the bound brane. We also discuss some possible applications of our results to the related topics in M-theory and to the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system.

Abstract:5-brane configurations describing 5d field theories are promoted to an M theory description a la Witten in terms of polynomials in two complex variables. The coefficients of the polynomials are the Coulomb branch. This picture resolves apparent singularities at vertices and reveals exponentially small corrections. These corrections ask to be compared to world line instanton corrections. From a different perspective this procedure may be used to define a diagrammatic representation of polynomials in two variables.

Abstract:We investigate supervised learning in neural networks. We consider a multi-layered feed-forward network with back propagation. We find that the network of small-world connectivity reduces the learning error and learning time when compared to the networks of regular or random connectivity. Our study has potential applications in the domain of data-mining, image processing, speech recognition, and pattern recognition.

Abstract:A unified physical theory called U theory, that is different from M theory, is defined and characterized. U theory, which includes spinor and twistor theory, loop quantum gravity, causal dynamical triangulations, E-infinity unification theory, and Clifford-Finslerian unifications, is based on physical tradition and experimental foundations. In contrast, M theory pays more attention to mathematical forms. While M theory is characterized by supersymmetry string theory, U theory is characterized by non-supersymmetry unified field theory.

Abstract:We study and extend the duality web unifying different decoupling limits of type II superstring theories and M theory. We systematically build connections to different corners, such as matrix theories, nonrelativistic string and M theory, tensionless (and ambitwistor) string theory, Carrollian string theory, and spin matrix limits of AdS/CFT. Abstract:We review some recent developments in the study of M-theory compactifications via Matrix theory. In particular we highlight the appearance of IIA strings and their interactions, and explain the unifying role of the M-theory five-brane for describing the spectrum of the T^5 compactification and its duality symmetries. The 5+1-dimensional micro-string theory that lives on the fivebrane world-volume takes a central place in this presentation.

Type IIA String Theory and tmf with Level Structure

Abstract:We look at a new string$^h$ tangential structure first introduced by Devalapurkar and relate it to the $W_7=0$ condition of Diaconescu-Moore-Witten for type IIA string theory and M-theory. We show that a string$^h$ structure on the target space automatically satisfies the $W_7=0$ condition and we also explain when the $W_7=0$ condition gives rise to a string$^h$ structure. Devalapurkar initially constructed $MString^h$ in such a way that it orients $tmf_1(3)$, we extend Devalapurkar's orientation and show that $MString^h$ orients $tmf_1(n)$. We compute the homotopy groups of $MString^h$ in the dimensions relevant for physical applications, and apply them to anomaly cancellation applications for compactifications of type IIA string theory.

Abstract:We discuss systematic approaches to the classification of string/M theory vacua, and physical questions this might help us resolve. To this end, we initiate the study of ensembles of effective Lagrangians, which can be used to precisely study the predictive power of string theory, and in simple examples can lead to universality results. Using these ideas, we outline an approach to estimating the number of vacua of string/M theory which can realize the Standard Model.

Abstract:In the quest for mathematical foundations of M-theory, the "Hypothesis H" that fluxes are quantized in Cohomotopy theory, implies, on flat but possibly singular spacetimes, that M-brane charges locally organize into equivariant homotopy groups of spheres. Here we show how this leads to a correspondence between phenomena conjectured in M-theory and fundamental mathematical concepts/results in stable homotopy, generalized cohomology and Cobordism theory Mf: Stems of homotopy groups correspond to charges of probe p-branes near black b-branes; stabilization within a stem is the boundary-bulk transition; the Adams d-invariant measures G4-flux; trivialization of the d-invariant corresponds to H3-flux; refined Toda brackets measure H3-flux; the refined Adams e-invariant sees the H3-charge lattice; vanishing Adams e-invariant implies consistent global C3-fields; Conner-Floyd's e-invariant is H3-flux seen in the Green-Schwarz mechanism; the Hopf invariant is the M2-brane Page charge (G7-flux); the Pontrjagin-Thom theorem associates the polarized brane worldvolumes sourcing all these charges. Cobordism in the third stable stem witnesses spontaneous KK-compactification on K3-surfaces; the order of the third stable stem implies 24 NS5/D7-branes in M/F-theory on K3. Quaternionic orientations correspond to unit H3-fluxes near M2-branes; complex orientations lift these unit H3-fluxes to heterotic M-theory with heterotic line bundles. In fact, we find quaternionic/complex Ravenel-orientations bounded in dimension; and we find the bound to be 10, as befits spacetime dimension 10+1.

Abstract:This thesis delves into the $AdS_4/CFT_3$ correspondence (M-theory on $AdS_4 \times S^7 / \mathbb{Z}_k$ $\leftrightarrow$ ABJM theory) in a comprehensive and detailed manner. The ABJM theory i.e. $\mathcal{N} = 6$ $U(N)_k \times U(N)_{-k}$ Chern-Simons matter theory, is presented in $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superspace, with explicit demonstration of R-symmetry invariance. The associated brane configuration in type IIB string theory is examined, and the low-energy effective field content is shown to align with that of the ABJM theory, by considering string modes and boundary conditions in a new intuitive perspective on brane intersection boundaries and staged compactification. The consequent lift to M-theory, along with the resulting geometry and its Killing spinors in 11D supergravity, is thoroughly analyzed. The $AdS_4/CFT_3$ statement is then articulated, and its implications are explored, with a focus on the computational machinery of Witten diagrams, first in position space and subsequently in the more convenient Mellin space. The thesis culminates with the computation of the four-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet superconformal primary, incorporating contributions from additional short multiplets involving Spin-3 and Spin-4 exchanges not previously considered in the literature. These computations hold significant practical implications for the M-theory S-matrix. As an overall remark, the streamlined nature of this comprehensive work also aims to inspire fresh insights from $AdS_4/CFT_3$, a duality that probes the non-perturbative aspects of M-theory; a theory that, if it exists, is a promising candidate for the theory of everything, yet remains shrouded in Mystery with much still unknown.

We introduce a set of generators of canonical transformations to exhibit the target space symmetries such as the general coordinate transformation and the gauge transformation of antisymmetric tensor field. Similar results are derived for type IIB string with manifestly S-duality-invariant worldsheet action.

Abstract:The $\mathcal{A}$-theory takes U-duality symmetry as a guiding principle, with the SL(5) U-duality symmetry being described as the world-volume theory of a 5-brane. Furthermore, by unifying the 6-dimensional world-volume Lorentz symmetry with the SL(5) spacetime symmetry, it extends to SL(6) U-duality symmetry. The SL(5) spacetime vielbein fields and the 5-brane world-volume vielbein fields are mixed under the SL(6) U-duality transformation. We demonstrate that consistent sectionings of the SL(6) $\mathcal{A}$5-brane world-volume Lagrangian yield Lagrangians of the $\mathcal{T}$-string with O(D,D) T-duality symmetry, the conventional string, the ${\cal M}$5-brane with GL(4) duality symmetry, and the non-perturbative M2-brane in supergravity theory. The GL(4) covariant Lagrangian of the ${\cal M}$5-brane derived in this manner is a new, perturbatively quantizable theory.

Abstract:Some physicists hope to use string/M-theory to construct a comprehensive underlying theory of our physical world a "final theory". Can such a theory be tested? A quantum theory of gravity must be formulated in 10 dimensions, so obviously testing it experimentally requires projecting it onto our 4D world (called "compactification"). Most string theorists study theories, including aspects such as AdS/CFT, not phenomena, and are not much interested in testing theories beyond the Standard Model about our world. Compactified theories generically have many realistic features whose necessary presence provides some tests, such as gravity, Yang-Mills forces like the Standard Model ones, chiral fermions that lead to parity violation, softly broken supersymmetry, Higgs physics, families, hierarchical fermion masses and more. All tests of theories in physics have always depended on assumptions and approximate calculations, and tests of compactified string/M-theories do too. String phenomenologists have also formulated some explicit tests for compactified theories. In particular, I give examples of tests from compactified M-theory (involving Higgs physics, predictions for superpartners at LHC, electric dipole moments, and more). It is clear that compactified theories exist that can describe worlds like ours, and it is clear that even if a multiverse were real it does not prevent us from finding comprehensive compactified theories like one that might describe our world. I also discuss what we might mean by a final theory, what we might want it to explain, and comment briefly on multiverse issues from the point of view of finding a theory that describes our world.
